4/17 US Escalates War on Iran

WAR OF WORDS, ESCALATING MILITARY THREAT

IRAN'S REFUSAL TO SUBMIT IS CRITICAL PROBLEM FOR U.S. GLOBAL AGENDA: 'NUCLEAR WEAPONS' ISSUE IS PRETEXT
Geopolitics has moved from the regional to the global dimension, with preponderance over the entire Eurasian continent serving as the central basis for global primacy. The United States, a non-Eurasian power, now enjoys international primacy, with its power directly deployed on three peripheries of the Eurasian continent […]. But it is on the globe’s most important playing field – Eurasia – that a potential rival to America might at some point arise...
Potentially, the most dangerous scenario would be a grand coalition of China,Russia, and perhaps Iran, an 'anti-hegemonic' coalition united not by ideology but by complementary grievances. It would be reminiscent in scale and scope of the challenge posed by the Sino-Soviet bloc, though this time China would likely be the leader and Russia the follower. Averting this contingency... will require a display of U.S.geostrategic skill on the western, eastern, and southern perimeters of Eurasia simultaneously.’

Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, was quoted by state television as saying the two-day meeting – dubbed Nuclear Energy For All, Nuclear Weapons For No One – will start in Tehran on 17 April, days after a US-hosted summit on nuclear security. "Iran, as a country supporting global disarmament, invites the world to disarm and prevent proliferation," Jalili said...

4/10 U.S. LONG WAR Long in the Making: Political Smoking Guns, part 3

"this administration prefers to avoid using the term 'Long War' or 'Global War on Terror' [GWOT]. Please use 'Overseas Contingency Operation

GWOT/ Long War / Overseas Contingency Operation

"When we refer to the long war, that is the war against terrorist extremists and the ideology that feeds it, and that is something that we see going on for decades."
America's Long War
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2006/feb/15/politics.usa1/print
Last week US defence chiefs unveiled their plan for battling global Islamist extremism. They envisage a conflict fought in dozens of countries and for decades to come.
The message from General Peter Pace, the chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, was apocalyptic. "We are at a critical time in the history of this great country and find ourselves challenged in ways we did not expect. We face a ruthless enemy intent on destroying our way of life and an uncertain future."
Gen Pace was endorsing the Pentagon's four-yearly strategy review, presented to Congress last week. The report sets out a plan for prosecuting what the the Pentagon describes in the preface as "The Long War", which replaces the "war on terror". The long war represents more than just a linguistic shift: it reflects the ongoing development of US strategic thinking since the September 11 attacks.
Looking beyond Iraq and Afghan battlefields, US commanders envisage a war unlimited in time and space against global Islamist extremism. "The struggle ... may well be fought in dozens of other countries simultaneously and for many years to come," the report says. The emphasis switches from large-scale, conventional military operations, such as the 2003 invasion of Iraq, towards a rapid deployment of highly mobile, often covert, counter-terrorist forces.

The air strikes targeted what Israel said were weapons manufacturing and storage sites. Palestinians said the sites struck included workshops and a factory.
No one was killed... though three children were wounded in the Israeli strike.

(There has been a certain amount of grumbling around the United Nations about tight control by the State Department over the donor conference, with a senior European diplomat calling it “The Bill and Hillary Show.”) United Nations diplomats said that in private the Obama administration and Haitian officials were still wrangling over the degree of involvement of Haitian government ministries in the reconstruction. “Préval has been saying, ‘Wait, why should we build this parallel structure here,’ ” said a United Nations diplomat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the delicate nature of the discussions. He said that the United States was pushing for the commission as a quicker, faster way to rebuild. The Preval administration has presented a draft law to parliament that would allow him to create such an agency by presidential decree.

digest:
Like every other attack by capital 'healthcare reform', also in the name of the people, is part of the bipartisan ruling class manipulation of their crisis to serve finance capital's global agenda on the backs and blood of working and oppressed peoples worldwide, including in the 'homeland' with a brew of hard and soft state power. The great electoral scam promotes the bipartisan strategic agenda, feigning 'opposition' and 'choice' by creating a media circus painting the opposition - that polls showed was a majority - as only far-right-racist-republicans: the 'progressive by default' trick.

PFLP: Meet occupation's settlement crimes in Jerusalem with popular revolt
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
March 16, 2010 The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine called to confront the occupation's campaign of settlement and Judaization of Jerusalem with a popular uprising that can pave the way for an alternative strategy and a unified national leadership. Only a mass popular mobilization can fully meet the challenges imposed by the occupation's aggressive expansionist offensive against the land, people and holy sites of Palestine!...

PFLP: US position on settlements and negotiations is a cover for the crimes of the occupation
March 14, 2010
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine condemned negotiations of any shape or form with the occupier, saying that what is needed for the Palestinian people is action, not words with the occupier. On March 13, 2010, the PFLP issued a press statement saying that the US is a fundamental strategic partner of the Zionist regime....The Front reiterated its utter refusal to bow to the dictates of the U.S. administration or accept it as a reference, saying that its false promises and deceptive initiatives are completely rejected. It demanded the Palestinian Authority presidency immediately rescind its willingness to participate in so-called "indirect negotiations" in blatant violation of the decision of the PLO Central Council and the will of the Palestinian people.
Comrade Khalida Jarrar, member of the Political Bureau of the PFLP, said that the Palestinian leadership must be held accountable for any return to so-called "indirect" or "direct" negotiations, saying that any such return is a violation of the Palestinian Central Council decisions and the will of the Palestinian people. The Front affirmed that it would introduce a measure for such accountability in the next meeting of the Central Council.

Netanyahu 'surprised' by U.S. condemnation over East Jerusalem plan
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1156095.html
Netanyahu earlier Saturday said he was surprised by the U.S. administration's public condemnation of his government over the building plan in East Jerusalem. Sources in the Prime Minister's Office said the crisis appeared to be orchestrated by the U.S. administration, as Netanyahu apologized to U.S. Vice President Biden and believed the crisis was behind the two allies... "In all negotiations conducted up until now, Israel has clarified for the Palestinians and the U.S. that these neighborhoods are part of the Jerusalem bloc that will remain in Israeli hands in any final-status agreement."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes that despite the crisis with the United States over the plan for new housing in East Jerusalem and the protests by the Palestinian Authority and Arab world, indirect talks with the PA will continue as planned early next week. "The crisis is behind us," sources in the Prime Minister's Bureau said Thursday. They said proof was the invitation to Netanyahu by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to meet in Washington in 10 days while Netanyahu visits a meeting of the AIPAC lobby group... Senior Israeli sources say that the prime minister expressed confidence that the so-called proximity talks will go ahead as planned. Netanyahu also welcomed two issues in the vice president's Tel Aviv University speech Thursday. The first was the need to move as quickly as possible to direct negotiations. The second was the need to discuss all core issues and not begin with borders, which is what the Palestinians want...
