Dismantling Pakistan, Quagmire of Imperial Slavery
By Talha Mujaddidi in Pakistan. Axis of Logic
July 18, 2009
...Pakistan is now in the midst of a brutal assault led by the U.S./Zionist... global imperialists. Aiding them in their enterprise are CIA, RAW (Indian Intel), Mossad, and MI6. They are targeting the complete destabilization of Pakistan, the destruction and dismantling of Pakistan’s nuclear program, control of oil, gas, and mineral rich, strategically-located Baluchistan, and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan. The Indians are in it for their old Bharatmata (Greater India) plan of making Pakistan their satellite state.

Death Squads, Divisions and Supporting Terrorism
The complex power game that is going on right now in NWFP is based on some key methods and objectives:
Assassination: The CIA is using the same tactics that Negroponte used earlier in Honduras and Nicaragua, and then later in Iraq. These include the creation of local death squads and militias who kill one another and those listed for assassination by the CIA. (refer to Jeremy Scahill’s bestseller. 'Blackwater’).

Dividing to conquer: Different tribes and sub-tribes in Tribal areas of Pakistan are being set against one another and against the Pakistan Army. General McChrystal (former JSOC commander) has taken over command in Afghanistan, where Negroponte’s methods are being used again but they will not succeed as they did in Iraq. The Soviets have failed, using such tactics before when they were trying to suppress the mujahedeen.

Supporting Rogue Militants: The recent "surge" operation in South of Afghanistan (in Helmand) is aimed at making sure that rogue militants regroup deep inside Pakistan’s Baluchistan, to stage a large insurgency against Islamabad. Mossad, CIA, RAW and MI6 sponsored BLA and supported Jundullah, which will also be used to create trouble inside Iran. Of course Al-Qaeda will keep "resurfacing" as long as it seems necessary to entertain the late evening news watcher.

While the Pakistan Army was busy dealing with the Indian threat after Mumbai terrorist attacks, the TTP under the leadership of Baitullah Mehsud was regrouping and gaining control of Swat Valley and its adjoining areas. Musharraf had given a wild card to CIA which resulted in the CIA's penetration of Tribal Areas of Pakistan, their buying loyalties of rogue elements and militants better known as freelance terrorists (e.g. Chechens and Uzbeks, who have no home to which to return).

At stake for the CIA in Tribal areas and Pakistan’s North
"It's admitted by the CIA that these attacks serve to provoke more attacks by forces in Pakistan. Michael Hayden for example said: 'We use military operations to excite the enemy, prompting him to respond. In that response we learn so much'. These attacks will continue because they hasten the larger US plan for the region: To destroy Pakistan to aid India, the main opposition to China in the region....

Of greatest importance to Langley at this time is the land link between Pakistan and China. Washington wants this link to be cut to allow greater control by NATO troops of the region near China's border. Remember 1984, when India moved into Siachen glacier, the military objective was to take control of Pakistan-China Karakorum Highway. If the land link between China and Pakistan is cut off, the US would be willing to mediate between India and Pakistan in the Kashmir dispute. The Indian government will oblige if the U.S. guarantees that Pakistan is de-nuclearized and made a proxy of India.

The U.S. wants NATO troops in Kashmir to provide for communication posts deep inside Kashmir right next to China, and also for control of the vital Ladakh airfield.
In the imperial scheme, the predominantly Pushtoon population of NWFP would be either made part of Afghanistan or put under direct control of US troops. This is also part of the plan to balkanize Pakistan.[...]

'Democratic nation building': Destruction & Reconstruction to serve U.S. geostrategic global interests
BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan — A sweeping United States military review calls for overhauling the troubled American-run prison here... an ominous symbol for Afghans where harsh [AKA TORTURE] interrogation methods and sleep deprivation [SIC] were used routinely ... Mr. Obama decided in May not to make the photographs public, warning that the images could ignite a deadly backlash against American troops.... as well as the entire Afghan jail and judicial systems, a reaction to worries that abuses and militant recruiting within the prisons are helping to strengthen the Taliban [SIC] ... Under the new approach, the United States would help build and finance a new Afghan-run prison for the hard-core extremists who are now using the poorly run Afghan corrections system as a camp to train petty thieves and other common criminals to be deadly militants, the American officials said. The remaining inmates would be taught vocational skills and offered other classes, and they would be taught about moderate Islam with the aim of reintegrating them into society, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity... The Defense and Justice Departments are leading two government task forces studying those issues and are scheduled to deliver reports to the president on Tuesday.
But administration officials said that the task forces — grappling with questions like whether terrorism suspects should be turned over to other countries and how to deal with detainees who are thought to be dangerous but who cannot be brought to trial — were likely to seek extensions on some contentious issues....

'Taliban' / 'al qaeda': all national resistance to U.S. state terror war
Afghanistan Civilians View Taliban as Liberators
Andrew Moran
...In a published report that was released on Monday, many civilians in Afghanistan look to the Taliban for aid and in some regions within Afghanistan many of the populace view the Taliban as liberators rather than oppressors. In an Associated Press report, "Afghans across the country complain bitterly about the country’s police, whose junior ranks earn only about $150 a month. Police pad their salaries by demanding bribes at checkpoints or kickbacks to investigate complaints, and police in opium poppy-growing regions turn a blind eye to drug smuggling for a cut of the profits, many Afghans complain. The report continued, "A 2007 International Crisis Group report entitled 'Reforming Afghanistan’s Police’ found that Afghans often view the police 'more as a source of fear than of security.’ It said ending corruption was critical if police were to provide a 'professional, consistent service to citizens." .. http://www.uruknet.de/?p=56030

Civilians said killed, wounded in south Afghanistan
'The airstrike killed six civilians and wounded 14 others,' he said, adding that women and children were among the victims.
By Ismail Sameem, Reuters
The U.S. military said on Thursday it was investigating an incident in southern Afghanistan in which residents said some civilians were killed and up to 16 wounded in a possible air strike. Civilian casualties, often caused by air strikes, have been a source of great tension between U.S. and NATO-led troops...The issue has led to a rift between President Hamid Karzai's government and its Western backers, with Karzai saying foreign air strikes have caused nothing but the deaths of civilians...

Private contractors replacing troops in Iraq, Afghanistan
July 15, 2009
While troops are being pulled out, a Pentagon report says that the number of contractors working for the US Defense Department has increased dramatically. This figure has now swollen to 250,000 outsource personnel working for companies such as Blackwater and Triple Canopy. President Obama has been replacing soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan with private contractors—some 250,000 are currently deployed overseas—including Blackwater...25% of all the troops in Iraq are private contractors, the number in Afghanistan is practically 30%. Contractors are not subject to the same guidelines as soldiers...Despite all the scandals, Blackwater is still operating in Iraq under different names, and recently Washington signed a new multimillion contract with Xe company (formerly Blackwater).... http://www.examiner.com/x-6665-Liberal-Examiner~y2009m7d15-Private-contr...

Obama Covers Up A Dozen My Lais: Were 3,000 Afghans Murdered As U.S. Troops Stood By?
Ted Rall
"I've asked my national security team to...collect the facts," President Obama told CNN. Then, he said, "we'll probably make a decision in terms of how to approach it once we have all the facts together." Probably. Such was Obama's tepid reaction to a New York Times cover story about an alleged "mass killing of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Taliban prisoners of war by the forces of an American-backed warlord during the 2001 in vasion of Afghanistan." Obama sounds so reasonable. Doesn't he always? But his reaction to the massacre in the Dasht-i-Leili desert is nothing more than the latest case of his administration refusing to investigate a Bush-era war crime. There are two things Obama doesn't want you to know about Dasht-i-Leili. First, the political class and U.S. state-controlled media have sat on this story for six to seven years. Second, U.S. troops are accused of participating in the atrocities, which involved 12 times as many murders as My Lai... Doran's documentary about these events, "Afghan Massacre: The Convoy of Death," was shown in 50 countries but couldn't get a U.S. release by a media wallowing in the amped-up pseudo-patriotism that marked 2002. Doran's film broke the story. (watch it online here http://www.uruknet.de/?p=56069 )

Afghan Resistance Statement: Khanjar or the Last Nail in the Coffin of Obama Strategy [excerpt]
July 16, 2009
US, NATO and the stooge Kabul regime have launched a joint operation in Helmand province, with a force of 12,000 troops. This vast operation has been continuing for the past two weeks against the patriotic land of Helmand and its heroic and gallant people...
It is an organized war in the true sense of the word. From another angle, it is significant as it is conducted after the assumption of power by Obama in the White House and after the announcement of his new strategy. If we read the results and look at the achievements of the operation, we see this so-called organized war...The Khangjar, sword, failed in the vast deserts of Helmand...
Observer believe that the dashing defeat of Britain and America in Helmand; their tremendous casualties and the failure of the armed-to-teeth army prove that Afghans never submit to might , arrogance and domineering but still the sole super power of the time resorts to old tactics of shock and awe, and bestiality, hoping this will break the Afghans. They should understand that all Afghan are not like the power that be in Kabul who are void of conscience and compunction....patriotic and gallant Afghans who can sacrifice all their families but are not ready to trade on their Islam, the Holy prophet (peace be upon him) the noble Afghan traditions. Nor they are ready to live a life of debasement and humiliation.
Obama, the organizers, planners and executers of his strategy should read the extent of bravery, heroism of the Afghans in Helmand that how a few defenseless Afghans pushed the Americans and other 46 countries of the world to the wall. Talib, Mujahid, farmers, old men, women, children and the climate have fused into one, dealing a dashing blow at the enemy, giving them exemplary lesson. .
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reminds them of the statement of Amir-ul-Momineeen some eights years ago when he addressed them on the voice of Shariat Radio, saying "Your cutting-edge weapons have the power to kill but have no power to protect you from death. Do not be overconfident about your weapons."

Uighur vs Afghan: A Study in Contrasts
Eric Walberg
http://informationclearinghouse.info/article23061.htm
...Chinese colonialism pales in comparison to the US/ British variant in nearby Afghanistan -- We came, destroy, and murder in the name of freedom. It is galling for Western media to take such delight in exposing China's dirty linen, as it slavishly hails US neo-imperial ventures in Iraq and Afghanistan. As Uighurs riot, US drones massacre hundreds of innocent Afghans and Pakistanis, and Obama sends thousands more troops to Afghanistan... With huge new bases in Afghanistan and 90,000 troops, the death toll on both sides is skyrocketing as Afghans prepare to "elect" the hated -- by both Afghans and Americans -- Hamid Karzai on 20 August. The new US strategy is designed to reduce civilian casualties, according to General Stanley McChrystal, the new commander of NATO forces in the country, though "a price worth paying", he assures us.
But civilian deaths are increasing. 22 Afghans were killed in the central Ghazni province in an air strike last week. And crime knows no borders, as 59 "militants" were killed just last week in neighbouring South Waziristan by US drones, just days after a US missile strike there killed 16. The airstrikes are said to be aimed at militants, but Pakistani media say only one in six have target Taliban insurgents in the country. More than five hundred Pakistanis -- most of them civilians -- have been killed over the past year in the US drone strikes. In any case, the terms civilian and militant are meaningless, as most so-called militants are local boys fighting the infidel invader, as they have every right to do. It would be more accurate to call them resistance heroes or martyrs....
China and the US... justify their respective crimes by blaming them on Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, bogeyman created by the US itself during its earlier anti-communist phase, who many commentators argue is still an extension of US covert operations....Afghanistan's unending torment is very useful to the US, bringing Europe and Russia into line, as Obama's triumphal summit in Moscow revealed. Initially after 2001, all of Central Asia and Russia were in thrall to America's "Operation Enduring Freedom" though there have been snags. Under Obama, things are back on track. Now even isolationist Turkmenistan has agreed to allow US military to use its airbases. With its new lease to the US of Manas airport, Kyrgyzstan is back on board the US gravy train to Afghanistan....all this part of a Great Game, this time directed not against Russia, but even using Russia as part of a long-term strategy to contain the rising powerhouse China? The Chinese point the finger for the recent unrest at the WUC, Washington-based Rebiya Kadeer and the spread of rumours over the internet to incite and coordinate riots. President George W Bush lauded Kadeer more than once as an "apostle of freedom". Whatever its claims to be supporting the cause of freedom etc, the US clearly assists the expatriates to foment unrest and destabilise China. This was and is being openly done in the case of Iraq and Iran... covertly to incite civil war...
Perhaps the Chinese and Russians are tolerating US meddling in Central Asia in line with the age-old strategy of playing off your enemies against each other... Taliban. This strategy was used by the US in the 1930s, building up both the fascists and communists to fight each other in Europe. Recall Truman's famous quip: "If we see that Germany is winning we ought to help Russia and if Russia is winning we ought to help Germany and that way let them kill as many as possible, although I don't want to see Hitler victorious under any circumstances."...

Judge allows delay in release of 'disturbing' CIA torture report
Daniel Tencer
A 2004 internal CIA report into the agency's torture practices must see the light of day by August 24, a federal judge has ordered, essentially granting an Obama administration request for a delay in making the document public. The document, which details torture practices and evidently questions the usefulness of "enhanced interrogation," is considered so "disturbing" it may have been what prompted Attorney-General Eric Holder to mull a special prosecutor for alleged torture-related crimes during the Bush administration... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=56032

Unreality Check: Amnesiac Controversy Ignores CIA's Real Death Squads
Chris Floyd
...For more than half a decade, it has been an open, easily established, easily confirmable fact that the White House used the CIA as a death squad to kill people that it "suspected" of being terrorists. (The use of such death squads was not limited to the CIA, of course. For example, in January 2003, the Pentagon's Special Operations Command was given the power "to kill and capture al Qaeda operatives and other terrorists," as the Washingto n Times reported. Stanley McChrystal, the man appointed by Barack Obama to command the war in Afghanistan, was the commander of these Special Ops forces in Iraq for several years.) And yet here we are, in July 2009, wringing our hands over the alleged existence of "unrealized" plans to perhaps set up some kind of CIA death squad on the orders of Dick Cheney! And even this hallucination is riddled with unreality of its own: witness the emphasis on Cheney's involvement when even the new stories make clear that Cheney was acting on the authority of a presidential directive. George W. Bush is being written out of the picture...http://www.uruknet.de/?p=56022

Making Their Bones: The American Elite's Bi-Partisan Murder Racket
Chris Floyd
Yesterday we wrote about the sudden-onset amnesia of our media-political class concerning the officially confirmed operations of American death squads. As we noted, official Washington is in a minor flutter at the moment over reports that Dick Cheney ordered and then concealed the existence of a planned program of targeted assassinations -- a program which was supposedly never implemented and was then supposedly cancelled by Obama CIA chief Leo n Panetta. We merely pointed out the well-known fact -- supported by copious reportage in mainstream journals in the past eight years, not to mention proud public admissions by top government officials, including the president -- that the CIA (and other agents of the United States government) had indeed been murdering people in "extrajudicial assassinations" throughout the Bush Administration. I concentrated on state murder during the Bush years because that is the ostensible focus of the current, manufactured controversy over the alleged existence of one allegedly non-operational program. However, as Jeremy Scahill points out, the Bush-Cheney murder racket was not created ex nihilo, but was a continuation and refinement of murder programs initiated by Bill Clinton... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=56050

Democrats' Selective Amnesia on Assassination: Clinton Did It and Obama Does It Too
By Jeremy Scahill
Members of Congress have expressed outrage over the "secret" CIA assassination program that former vice president Dick Cheney allegedly ordered concealed from Congress. But this program—and the media descriptions of it—sounds a lot like the assassination policy implemented by President Bill Clinton, particularly during his second term in office. Partisan politics often require selective amnesia. Over the past decade, we have seen this amnesia take hold when it comes to many of President Bush’s most vile policies. And we are now seeing a pretty severe case overtake several leading Democrats. It makes for good speechifying to act as though all criminality began with Bush and—particularly these days—Cheney, but that is extreme intellectual dishonesty. The fact is that many of Bush’s worst policies (now being highlighted by leading Democrats) were based in some form or another in a Clinton-initiated policy or were supported by the Democrats in Congress with their votes. To name a few: the USA PATRIOT Act, the invasion of Iraq, the attack against Afghanistan, the CIA’s extraordinary rendition program, the widespread use of mercenaries and other private contractors in US war zones and warrant-less wire-tapping...

Florida: Caught on camera 40 prison guards kick and punch handcuffed juvenile inmates
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1200163/Caught-camera-...
In shocking CCTV footage prison guards kicked and punched young inmates already in handcuffs. Chaotic scenes were captured by surveillance video at the Juvenile Detention Centre in Jacksonville, Florida. Mayhem broke out when an inmate broke the sprinkler system, causing a dorm to flood.Minutes later, about 40 guards - some wearing riot gear - stormed the room. Most inmates can be seen putting their hands in the air and dropping to the floor, lying face down... as the footage shows, one juvenile, who sits on a bed alone without resisting, is slammed onto the floor by a warden. One inmate is kicked as he lies on the ground and another is punched in the head after being handcuffed. Two more inmates are kneed as they're walked out, despite already having been restrained. The young prisoners are thrown to the floor and kneed in the back, despite showing no resistance to the guards... After the chaos subsided, the inmates were seen lying motionless on the floor of another room. Each is handcuffed and some have their trousers around their knees. Despite this, one officer is seen kicking an inmate, while another appears to step on his groin area. Four prison guards were fired after the Sheriff found that they had used 'unnecessary force'

CIA Claims of Cancelled Campaign are Hogwash
By Eric Margolis
Toronto Sun
CIA director Leon Panetta just told Congress he cancelled a secret operation to assassinate al-Qaida leaders. The CIA campaign, authorized in 2001, had not yet become operational, claimed Panetta... The U.S. has been trying to kill al-Qaida personnel (real and imagined) since the Clinton administration. These efforts continue under President Barack Obama. Claims by Congress it was never informed are hogwash.

The CIA and Pentagon have been in the assassination business since the early 1950s, using American hit teams or third parties. For example, a CIA-organized attempt to assassinate Lebanon's leading Shia cleric, Muhammad Fadlallah, using a truck bomb, failed, but killed 83 civilians and wounded 240.
In 1975, I was approached to join the Church Committee of the U.S. Congress investigating CIA's attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro, Congo's Patrice Lumumba, Vietnam's Ngo Dinh Diem, and Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser. Add to America's hit list Saddam Hussein, Afghanistan's Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Indonesia's Sukarno, Chile's Marxist leaders and, very likely, Yasser Arafat.
Libya's Moammar Khadaffy led me by the hand through the ruins of his private quarters, showing me where a 2,000-pound U.S. bomb hit his bedroom, killing his infant daughter. Most Pakistanis believe, rightly or wrongly, the U.S. played a role in the assassination of President Zia ul-Haq...

Assassination was outlawed in the U.S. in 1976, but that did not stop attempts by its last three administrations to emulate Israel's Mossad in the "targeted killing" of enemies. The George W. Bush administration, and now the Obama White House, sidestepped American law by saying the U.S. was at war, and thus legally killing "enemy combatants." ... U.S. assassins are still at work. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, U.S. drones are killing tribesmen almost daily. Over 90% are civilians. Americans have a curious notion that killing people from the air is not murder or even a crime, but somehow clean.
U.S. Predator attacks are illegal and violate U.S. and international law. Pakistan's government, against which no war has been declared, is not even asked permission or warned of the attacks. Dropping 2,000-pound bombs on apartment buildings in Gaza or Predator raids on Pakistan's tribal territory are as much murder as exploding car bombs or suicide bombers. But Congress never declared war. http://informationclearinghouse.info/article23103.htm

Report: Iran advances nuclear program
Iran is blocking U.N. nuclear-agency attempts to upgrade monitoring of its atomic program while advancing those activities to the stage that the country would have the means to test a weapon within six months, diplomats [SIC] said Friday. The diplomats emphasized that there were no indications of plans for such a nuclear test, saying it was highly unlikely Iran would risk heightened confrontation with the West — and chances of Israeli attack — by embarking on such a course... Iran is still considered years away from developing a reliable nuclear-warhead delivery system. So tipping its hand with a nuclear test, should it want to own such weapons, would make little sense. "We are talking here not of intent but capability," said one of two western diplomats accredited to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Like his colleague from another country, this diplomat — who has access to intelligence on Iran's nuclear program — demanded anonymity in exchange for discussions of the highly confidential issue....

"...an activist in exile, becoming a valuable asset for Western intelligence agencies and analysts..."
Repression has a familiar face
By Borzou Daragahi, Los Angeles Times
BERLIN —
For most people around the globe, the images of club-wielding men on motorcycles beating demonstrators on the streets of Iran was just another case of brutality in a far-off land.
But as he watched the violence of recent weeks unfold on television and YouTube, Amir Farshad Ebrahimi, an exiled Iranian, realized he recognized some of the attackers.
They were once good friends. His life, encapsulating the betrayals and disappointments that followed Iran's tumultuous revolution 30 years ago, as well as the hopes and fears of Iranians now living abroad, had come full circle.Once a lonely young man in exile, a rejuvenated Ebrahimi is now using his experience as an insider within Iran's hard-line militias to "out" members of the group. On his well-regarded Persian-language blog, he has listed the names and phone numbers of about a dozen militia members whom he has spotted in photos and in broadcast footage of the demonstrations over his homeland's disputed presidential election...
Ebrahimi embraced the life of an activist in exile, becoming a valuable asset for Western intelligence agencies and analysts seeking insight on the ways of the Islamic Republic. He was in regular contact with Western officials and a circle of neoconservative activists. He and other Iranian and Western activists enticed Iranian officials to defect to the West. The group played a key role in the defection of Brig. Gen. Ali Reza Asgari, a former Iranian deputy defense minister who left via Turkey, taking a trove of secrets about Iran's weaponry and technology with him....Ebrahimi spends his time writing his blog and working on a memoir he hopes to sell to Western publishers [...]

State Department Grant for News Website Targeting Iran
Jeremy Hammond
http://hammond.foreignpolicyjournal.com/2009/07/03/state-department-gran...
Wikileaks has obtained a Department of State document laying out the terms of a grant in part for the purpose of helping to import new media technology into Iran for the creation of a website to “promote democracy”.
This file provides budgetary information regarding a specific covert new media initiative funded by the US State Department that targets Iran. This document was leaked because the man in charge of the initiative has strong ties to Israeli Intelligence and subcontracts portions of the work to Israeli intel fronts such as MEMRI [Middle East Media Research Institute] using US tax dollars. It is currently not known if this project is still being funded by the US State Department.

The document states, “Action Award Number S-NEAP1-07-CA-217 supports the work of ICG, LLC. (herein referred to as Recipient) entitled, “Peyman Online: News in Motion” as described in the attached Statement of Work.”
Most of the document, dated April 25, 2007, details the terms of the grant. But under a section entitled “AUTHORIZATION”, the document states:

Most financial and other transactions in or involving Iran by persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction are prohibited unless licensed by the U.S. Department of Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), NEA [State Department Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs] and its awardees (together with NEA, the “Licensees”) are authorized under OFAC License No. IA-7421-a issued to NEA to engage in all transactions necessary to advance democracy and human rights as defined in and authorized in this and other similar NEA grant or cooperative agreements, including the exportation or re-exportation by the awardees to Iran of goods, technology or software that are neither listed on the Commerce Control List under the Export Administration Regulations, 15 C.F.R. parts 730 et seg. (”CCL items”), nor listed on the United States Munitions List established under section 38 of the Arms Export Control Act (22 U.S.C. 2778) (”USML items”)...

MEPI is providing funding to ICG to implement a project entitled Peyman Online: News in Motion. The Statement of Work below represents the complete description of the work to be undertaken and associated requirements of the award.

A) PROJECT DESIGN
1. Project context
This project is intended to contribute to the following NEA strategic goals:

* Support an expanded public space where democratic voices can be heard in the political process
The “Intended Outcome” is “Sustainable independent online media source informs and connects citizens to global communities”, and the “Objective” is “To develop independent and credible multi-media news with interactive sources”. The document then gives more details showing that the intention is to create a news website, listing the money budgeted for various expenses associated with it, such as payments to freelance writers, including from inside Iran, and TV production.

The grants officer was Anna Mary Portz at the NEA Partnership Initiative (NEA/PI) and the project officer was David Denehy (listed with phone contact at (202) 647-2519 and email denemyDM@state.gov).
Denehy headed up the Office of Iranian Affairs (OIA), the State Department’s “regime change” office under the Bush administration, and was a specialist at the International Republican Institute (IRI). The OIA was responsible for dishing out cash to various groups to “promote democracy” in Iran. The IRI has been a recipient of National Endowment for Democracy (NED) funds, including for activities in Venezuela at the time of the attempted coup against President Hugo Chavez in 2002.

In the face of all the documented evidence of U.S. 'soft power strategic non-violence' destabilzation forces at work, the pretense by faux anti-imperialists ---- echoing official U.S. propaganda ---- that it's a genuine revolutionary mass uprising against Iran's reactionary capitalist theocracy --- serves U.S. imperialism, and is not an innocent mistake:

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi is among thousands of election protesters expected to attend a prayer service at Tehran University Friday.
A self-described "party girl," 28-year-old Ameneh Saeedi has spent the past few days brushing up on her prayers, which she hasn't performed since she was forced to in high school.
On Friday morning, Saeedi, a secretary, will skip her daily makeup routine and don an all-covering black hijab to attend the weekly prayer sermon by Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani that could herald a new stage in the high-stakes political drama that has followed the disputed June 12 re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad...

surprise! 'prediction' comes to pass
Rafsanjani's sermon reignites Iran protest
... Rafsanjani's speech, as well as pitched clashes between security forces and ... crowds filled with young men and women brandishing eye-catching ribbons in green, the color of the opposition movement. Some women defiantly wore all-covering chadors in bright green....supporters of opposition figure Mir-Hossein Mousavi ... suggested the political firestorm unleashed by the marred vote would continue and that the movement it had inspired remained strong... At times during the prayer service.. as hard-liners repeated cries of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," Mousavi supporters overwhelmed them with chants of "Death to Russia" and "Death to China," referring to the two U.N. Security Council members that have shielded Iran from much tougher sanctions over its nuclear program. Asked about the day's developments, U.S. State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters that Iran's government needed to address a crisis of confidence. "And until it does, it's going to be very hard for that government to gain legitimacy in the eyes of its people"...

Massive police raids on suspected protestors in Minneapolis
Glen Greenwald
[updated below (with video) - Update II - Update III - Update IV]
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/30/police_raids/index.htm...
Protesters here in Minneapolis have been targeted by a series of highly intimidating, sweeping police raids across the city, involving teams of 25-30 officers in riot gear, with semi-automatic weapons drawn, entering homes of those suspected of planning protests, handcuffing and forcing them to lay on the floor, while law enforcement officers searched the homes, seizing computers, journals, and political pamphlets. Last night, members of the St. Paul police department and the Ramsey County sheriff's department handcuffed, photographed and detained dozens of people meeting at a public venue to plan a demonstration, charging them with no crime other than "fire code violations," and early this morning, the Sheriff's department sent teams of officers into at least four Minneapolis area homes where suspected protesters were staying.

ABC Reporter Arrested in Denver Taking Pictures of Senators, Big Donors on Public Sidewalk
DENVER -- Police in Denver arrested an ABC News producer today as he and a camera crew were attempting to take pictures on a public sidewalk of Democratic senators and VIP donors leaving a private meeting at the Brown Palace Hotel. Asa Eslocker was investigating the role of lobbyists and top donors at the DNC.
More Photos. Police on the scene refused to tell ABC lawyers the charges against the producer, (Click here to watch video of the arrest.)
A cigar-smoking Denver police sergeant, accompanied by a team of five other officers, first put his hands around Eslocker's neck, then twisted the producer's arm behind him to put on handcuffs. The sheriff's officer is seen telling Eslocker the sidewalk is owned by the hotel. Later ...seen pushing Eslocker off the sidewalk into oncoming traffic, forcing him to the other side of the street...two hours later when Denver police arrived to place Eslocker under arrest, apparently based on a complaint from the Brown Palace Hotel, a central location for Democratic officials.During the arrest, one of the officers can be heard saying to Eslocker, "You're lucky I didn't knock the f..k out of you. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/Conventions/story?id=5668622

Pentagon launches foreign news websites
http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/2008-04-30-sites_N.htm
WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is setting up a global network of foreign-language news websites, including an Arabic site for Iraqis, and hiring local journalists to write current events stories and other content that promote U.S. interests and counter insurgent messages.... Content for the news sites is written by local journalists hired to write stories that fit the Pentagon's goals for the sites, such as promoting democracy, security, good government and the rule of law. Military personnel or contractors review the stories to ensure they are consistent with those goals. Reporters are paid only for work that is posted to the sites.
The news sites are part of a Pentagon initiative to expand "Information Operations" on the Internet. Neither the initiative nor the Iraqi site, www.Mawtani.com, has been disclosed publicly.
At first glance, Mawtani.com looks like a conventional news website. Only the "about" link at the bottom of the site takes readers to a page that discloses the Pentagon sponsorship. The site, which has operated since October, is modeled on two long-established Pentagon-sponsored sites that offer native-language news for people in the Balkans and North Africa.... The new websites follow the Pentagon's launch last year of a "Trans Regional Web Initiative" expected to lead to "a minimum of six" news sites run by military commands around the globe, according to a Special Operations Command notice for contractors interested in running the sites.

The initiative has its roots in the Balkans, where U.S. commanders set up a website in 1999 to rebut then-Yugoslavian president Slobodan Milosevic's nationalist rhetoric in the Kosovo conflict. In 2002, it became a news site
Journalism groups say the sites are deceptive and easily could be mistaken for independent news....

Pentagon officials say the sites are a legitimate and necessary way to promote U.S. policy goals and counter the messages of political and religious extremists. They also note that the United States and its allies have been outgunned in the battle to get information to audiences in Iraq and elsewhere. "It's important to … engage these foreign audiences and inform," says Michael Vickers, the assistant secretary of Defense in charge of special operations and stabilization efforts. "Our adversaries use the Internet to great advantage, so we have the responsibility of countering (their messages) with accurate, truthful information, and these websites are a good vehicle."
The Mawtani site is named for the Iraqi national anthem and means "my homeland." It is available in Arabic, Farsi and Urdu — but not in English — and is supervised by the Pentagon's Iraq command.
The U.S. Southern Command is building a similar site for Latin American audiences. The Pacific Command, which covers Asia, is interested in setting up a news site, says Navy Lt. Cmdr. Amy Derrick-Frost, a spokeswoman....

For decades, influencing foreign audiences has been the purview of Voice of America, the U.S. radio and TV service. VOA is under the Broadcasting Board of Governors, an eight-member, presidentially appointed board that oversees all U.S. foreign-language broadcasts, including Radio Sawa and Al Hurra television in the Middle East.
Previous Pentagon information efforts have attracted controversy. In 2005, members of Congress chastised the Pentagon over a program that paid for the placement of favorable stories in the Iraqi press. The practice could "erode the independence of Iraqi media," said Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who then chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee. The Pentagon stopped the program.
Last month, The New York Times reported how the Pentagon was giving secret briefings and guidance to former Defense officials who are paid by television news outlets for independent analysis....The websites suggest [SIC] a pattern of Pentagon efforts to promote its agenda by disseminating information through what appear to be independent outlets, says Marvin Kalb, a fellow at Harvard University's Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.

Pentagon launches new propaganda network
" ... intended to allow small media outlets in the United States and elsewhere to bypass what the Pentagon views as an increasingly combative press corps."
Associated Press, 3/2004
The U.S. military will launch its own news service in Iraq and Afghanistan to send military video, text and photos directly to the Internet or news outlets. The $6.3 million project, expected to begin operating in April, is one of the largest military public affairs projects in recent memory, is intended to allow small media outlets in the United States and elsewhere to bypass what the Pentagon views as an increasingly combative press corps.
U.S. officials have complained that Iraq-based media focuses on catastrophic events like car bombs and soldiers' deaths, while giving short shrift to U.S. rebuilding efforts.
The American public "currently gets a pretty slanted picture," said Army Capt. Randall Baucom, a spokesman for the Kuwait-based U.S.-led Coalition Land Forces Command.
The project, called Digital Video and Imagery Distribution System or DVIDS, will give the Pentagon more control of the coverage when calamities do happen.
Army camera teams will be able to use their access to battle zones or military bases to film the aftermath of rebel attacks on U.S. troops -- or U.S. raids on insurgent targets -- then offer free pictures to news outlets within two hours....

"The Army wants to get their view across and they are using a technique as old as any public relations maneuver ever devised," said Aly Colon, an ethics group leader at the Poynter Institute, the journalism research and education center in St. Petersburg, Fla...."This is the kind of news that people get in countries where the government controls the media. Why would anybody here want to buy into it?" Mac McKerral, president of the Society of Professional Journalists, told The AP...

The military brass was surprised and impressed with the speed and immediacy of the coverage of journalists embedded with U.S. combat units during the war, and wanted to develop the same capabilities, Thomas said. Television crews demonstrated their equipment for Army public affairs teams, and Thomas said his staff compiled a list of equipment needed to cover breaking news. The Army already has dozens of its own reporters in Iraq and Afghanistan writing for internal newsletters and magazines. Thomas said he hopes civilian media can reuse the same stories, or at least the Army's photos and video. The military's reporters will transmit their stories and video to servers at Third Army headquarters in Atlanta, and allow access to them over a password-protected Internet site, Baucom said. Accredited news organizations will be allowed to register for free access... he said the military also plans to use the equipment for internal video, such as beaming pictures from an aircraft's gun camera to a Pentagon briefing.
The DVIDS units will make it easier to get positive stories published, Thomas said. "There are numerous good news stories that aren't told that do provide a better balance on the overall successes we achieved in Iraq," he said. "We'll be able to provide the option for those types of stories. They're no going to lead in a major daily newspaper, but they'll play well in smaller daily papers and especially weekly papers." ... "We think we can give them some more focused copy. We can shoot video of someone from, say, Tupelo, Miss., and they've got what looks like a very good hometown piece."...

DNI sees cyber threats aimed at core U.S. intelligence systems
Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell is focusing U.S. intelligence community resources on countering the threat posed to U.S. information and infrastructure from computer attacks. McConnell told Congress last week that the cyber threat is evolving from passive intelligence collection to the danger of crippling cyber strikes on computer networks and infrastructure. “Threats to our information technology infrastructure are an important focus for this community,” McConnell told the House Intelligence Committee. “We assess, as we have assessed for a long time, nations such as Russia and China long have had the technical capability to target U.S. information infrastructure for intelligence collection, and what I want to emphasize here — intelligence collection.”

Clinton 'aides' advising Honduran coup regime
By Bill Van Auken
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/jul2009/hond-j15.shtml
Ever since the military abducted President Manuel Zelaya at gunpoint on June 28 and expelled him from the country, the Obama administration has cast itself as a steadfast defender of “democracy” in Honduras. The real nature of that defense has become somewhat clearer with the news that key former aides to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have surfaced as top advisers to the illegal regime led by Roberto Micheletti, which was installed by the coup....
The State Department is maintaining the fiction that Arias is acting independently. Department spokesman Ian Kelly told a press conference Monday, “It’s not a process that is being led by the United States of America.” The response of the reporters was general laughter [editor:: while reporting u.s. propaganda as news] As in earlier statements by Clinton and other spokesman, Kelly reiterated the US “support for the restoration of democratic order in Honduras,” without either condemning the coup or calling for the restoration of Zelaya....
Zelaya himself issued an “ultimatum” to the coup regime from neighboring Nicaragua... talking about facing the regime’s “bayonets” and inviting it to shoot him.Such dramatic rhetoric cannot conceal the fact that Zelaya, like Micheletti, is appealing primarily to Washington to come to his aid. Zelaya, a product of the Honduran oligarchy, has no intention of overturning the class system and political establishment in Honduras....

In the final analysis, no section of this ruling elite has any real independence from imperialism. This is also the standpoint of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who last week put in a call to the US State Department and publicly urged Obama to “do something” about Honduras. Chavez referred to the Honduran coup as Obama’s “moment of truth,” urging him, “Demonstrate that you are ready to confront the hawks.” Nothing could more clearly express the bankruptcy of left bourgeois nationalism in Latin America.
Obama is not going to confront any “hawks.” The evolution of US policy in the wake of the coup has demonstrated, once again, that the military and intelligence agencies in the US are asserting their power even more directly than under the Bush administration...

"The Honduran military is effectively a subsidiary of the United States government. Honduras, as a whole, if any Latin American country is fully owned by the United States, it's Honduras. Its economy is wholly based on trade, foreign aid and remittances."
Greg Grandin - professor of history at New York University:

"Unleashed", Rodrigo Acuña
..Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the administration was not formally designating the ouster as a military coup for now, a step that would force a cut-off of most U.S. aid to Honduras. Under U.S. law, no aid -- other than for the promotion of democracy -- may be provided to a country whose elected head of government has been toppled in a military coup...The State Department said it was unable to immediately say how much assistance the United States gives Honduras. The State Department has requested $68.2 million in aid for fiscal year 2010, which begins on October 1, up from $43.2 million. This covers funds for development, Honduran purchases of U.S. arms, military training, counter-narcotics and health care but does not include Defense Department aid, a U.S. official said....
Despite almost universal condemnation, the new Micheletti regime is confident it will hang on to power claiming credits from the US and the European Union will continue to flow into the country.... with a US-trained military, Honduran 'democracy' should be more than safe. http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUKTRE55S5J220090629?sp=true

Obama Administration's Statements Endanger Lives of Honduran
There has not been a single statement from the Obama administration since President Zelaya was overthrown on June 28, condemning the shootings and beatings; arrests, intimidation and deportation of journalists; and the closing of independent radio and TV stations committed by the coup government.

Economy in China Regains Robust Pace of Growth
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/17/business/global/17yuan.html
China’s economy grew by 7.9 percent in the second quarter... The gross domestic product figures, released by the National Bureau of Statistics in Beijing, suggest that the country’s stimulus policies are working and that the government will most likely achieve the 8 percent full-year growth target it set early this year, analysts say. After a sharp slowdown this year, when the pace of growth dipped to 6.1 percent, down from 13 percent in 2007, China’s economy has rebounded.
“This is a stunning recovery,” said Andy Rothman, an economist based in Shanghai at the brokerage firm CLSA. “And it’s also not just the government money fueling the recovery. The private sector is also recovering, and that’s the key.” a surprisingly strong showing during the global economic downturn....“This is probably the only major economy in the world where manufacturing employment is rising,” said Mr. Rothman.
Most analysts are now forecasting strong growth for the second half of this year, at close to 9 percent above a year earlier. But there are risks emerging, too.

Legal immunity set for swine flu vaccine makers:
ATLANTA — The last time the government embarked on a major vaccine campaign against a new swine flu, thousands filed claims contending they suffered side effects from the shots. This time, the government has already taken steps to head that off. Vaccine makers and federal officials will be immune from lawsuits that result from any new swine flu vaccine, under a document signed by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, government health officials said Friday.... Federal officials vaccinated 40 million Americans during a national campaign. A pandemic never materialized, but thousands who got the shots filed injury claims, saying they suffered a paralyzing condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome or other side effects.
"The government paid out quite a bit of money," said Stephen Sugarman, a law professor who specializes in product liability at the University of California at Berkeley.
