6/25 True Definition of Terrorist, Greenwald; Military as Socialist Model for US, Kristof; Social Media Integral Part of DoD

There are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.
Obama, inaugural address, 1/20/09

America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire. The United States has been one of the greatest sources of progress the world has ever known. We were born out of revolution against an empire. We were founded upon the ideal that all are created equal, and we have shed blood and struggled for centuries to give meaning to those words - within our borders, and around the world. New Face Of War: "the spread of counter - terrorism"
By Conn Hallinan, http://www.fpif.org/articles/the_new_face_of_war
The assassination of Osama bin Laden formalized the new kind of warfare, where sovereignty is irrelevant, armies tangential, and decisions are secret...requires a vast intelligence apparatus... now almost a fourth arm of government most Americans are unaware of. According to The Washington Post, this murky world includes 1,271 government agencies and 1,931 private companies in more than 10,000 locations across the country..that blurs the traditional borders between civilian and military forces.. at the core of the “new warfare”...The Spread of Counter-Terrorism... The principle behind counter-terrorism is eliminating people you don’t like... no patina of “hearts and minds,” ... no effort to practice the subterfuge of “plausible deniability” that deflected the ire of target countries in the past.... “Petraeus’s appointment to head CIA is an important indication of U.S. fusing intelligence and military operations.”...

Demoralize the enemy from within by surprise, terror, sabotage, assassination. This is the war of the future.

U.S. 'secret war' expands globally as Special Operations forces take larger role
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/03/AR201006...
Beneath commitment to soft diplomacy and beyond the combat zones of Afghanistan and Iraq, the Obama administration has significantly expanded a largely secret U.S. war against [ed: SUSPECTED] al-Qaeda and other radicals... Special Operations forces are deployed in 75 countries, compared with about 60 at the beginning of last year. In addition to units that have spent years in the Philippines and Colombia, teams are operating in Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia....The Special Operations capabilities requested by the WH go beyond unilateral strikes and include the training of local counterterrorism forces and joint operations with them. In Yemen, for example, "we are doing all three," the official said. Officials who spoke about the increased operations were not authorized to discuss them on the record.
The clearest public description of the secret-war aspects of the doctrine came from White House counterterrorism director John O. Brennan. He said last week the United States "will not merely respond after the fact" of a terrorist attack but will "take the fight to al-Qaeda and its extremist affiliates whether they plot and train in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and beyond... not much different than Bush's pledge to "take the battle to the enemy...and confront them before they emerge."
Gen. David H. Petraeus at CENTOCM and others were ordered by the Joint Staff under Bush to develop plans to use Special Operations forces for intelligence collection and other counterterrorism efforts, and were given the authority to issue direct orders to them. But those orders were formalized only last year, including in a CENTCOM directive outlining operations throughout South Asia, the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. The order includes intelligence collection in Iran... The elite Special Operations units, drawn from all four branches of the armed forces, became a frontline counterterrorism weapon for the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks...the other side of the national security doctrine of global engagement and domestic values President Obama released last week... But Obama has made such forces a far more integrated part of his global security strategy...the administration... has based its lethal operations on the authority Congress gave the president in 2001 to use "all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons" he determines "planned, authorized, committed, or aided" the Sept. 11 attacks...most currently being targeted... "particularly in places outside Afghanistan," had nothing to do with the 2001 attacks.

U.S. state terror war in at least 75 countries

As the Obama administration officially discarded the Bush-era name, it expanded the war and the forces to fight it in places like Somalia. U.S. special operations forces now pursue war-on-terror tasks in at least 75 countries and who knows how many CIA and other intelligence agents [and ops] are involved....wars that increasingly integrate civilian branches of the government like the State Department, CIA, the regular Army, Marines, and Air Force, ever-growing drone air power (military + CIA, officially a civilian intelligence agency), and a combined secret military force [ed: plus 'Special Forces', and contractors by the hundreds of thousands]...Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Libya.6/15/11Tom Engelhardt, http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28342.htm

U.S. neoliberal national socialism

The Military as Socialist Model for America: NYT Columnist Nicholas Kristof
http://inteldaily.com/2011/06/new-york-times-columnist-nicholas-kristof-...
By David Theroux
In his latest column for the New York Times, “Our Lefty Military,”the iconic “liberal” commentator Nicholas D. Kristof has now come clean on the reality of his own collectivist views that military means and organization embody the “liberal ethos” (“progressivism”), an admission that liberals rarely face up to. While numerous liberal and conservative pundits have long mistakenly supported military Keynesianism (see here andhere) as necessary for national defense and economic prosperity, Kristof has now taken this view far further to claim that the military provides the all-inclusive socialist model for all of society. According to Kristof:
The business sector is dazzlingly productive, but it also periodically blows up our financial system. Yet if we seek another model, one that emphasizes universal health care and educational opportunity, one that seeks to curb income inequality, we don’t have to turn to Sweden. Rather, look to the United States military. You see, when our armed forces are not firing missiles, they live by an astonishingly liberal ethos — and it works. The military helped lead the way in racial desegregation, and even today it does more to provide equal opportunity to working-class families — especially to blacks — than just about any social program. It has been an escalator of social mobility in American society because it invests in soldiers and gives them skills and opportunities...
Kristof approvingly quotes General Wesley Clark, who ran for the 2004 Democratic Party nomination for president, on the nature of military organization:
It’s the purest application of socialism there is . . . It’s a really fair system, and a lot of thought has been put into it, and people respond to it really well [...].

The true definition of "Terrorist"
6/23/11 http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/
Glenn Greenwald
In late May, two Iraqi nationals, who were in the U.S. legally, were arrested in Kentucky and indicted on a variety of Terrorism crimes...But look at what they're actually accused of doing. Those above-linked news reports as well as the unsealed indictment make clear there are two separate categories of acts forming the basis for these allegations. The first, that one of the men, Waad Ramadan Alwan, admitted to working with the "Iraqi insurgency" to attack American troops during the first three years of the war....
The second set of acts involves a plot apparently concocted by the FBI then presented to Alwan through the use of an informant, to ship weapons and money to "Al Qaeda in Iraq."... Indeed, the FBI -- in touting the plot they created and induced Alwan to become part of -- acknowledged that the plot was devoted exclusively to attacking U.S. troops in Iraq, not civilians: (...)
There is no suggestion in any of these reports or documents, not even a hint, that either of the accused ever tried to stage any attacks in the U.S. or target civilians either in the U.S. or Iraq. Leaving aside the fact that this seems to be *yet another case where the FBI manufacturers its own plots in which they entrap people into joining, then praises itself for stopping them, the alleged crimes here are confined entirely to past attacks on U.S. invading forces in their country and current efforts to aid those waging such attacks now....

"Terrorism" for a citizen of a country to fight against foreign invading troops by attacking purely military targets? This is hardly the first case where we have condemned as Terrorists citizens of countries we invaded for fighting back against invading American troops. The U.S. shipped numerous people to Guantanamo, branded them Terrorists, and put them in cages for years without charges for doing exactly that (indeed, the Obama administration prosecuted at Guantanamo the first child soldier tried for war crimes, Omar Khadr, for throwing a grenade at U.S. troops in Afghanistan)....
Terrorism is the most meaningless, thus most manipulated, term in American political discourse...while it lacks any objective meaning, it does have a functional one. It means: anyone -- especially of the Muslim religion and/or Arab nationality -- who fights against the United States and its allies or tries to impede their will. That's what "Terrorism" is; that's all it means. And it's just extraordinary we've created "law" intended to do nothing other than justify all acts of American violence while delegitimizing, criminalizing, and converting into Terrorism any acts of resistance to that violence.
Just consider: in American political discourse, it's not remotely criminal that the U.S. attacked Iraq, spent 7 years destroying the country, and left at least 100,000 people dead. To even suggest that American officials responsible for that attack should be held criminally liable is to marginalize oneself as a fringe and unSerious radical. It's not an idea that's even heard, let alone accepted. After all, all Good Patriotic Americans were horrified that an Iraqi citizen would so much as throw a shoe at George Bush; what did he do to deserve such treatment? The U.S. is endowed with the inalienable right to commit violence against anyone it wants without any consequences of any kind.
By contrast, any Iraqi who fights back against the U.S. invasion -- even by fighting against exclusively military targets -- is not only a criminal, but a Terrorist: one who should be shipped to Guantanamo. And this notion is so engrained that no media account discussing this case would dare question the application of the "Terrorism" label to what they've done, even though it applies in no conceivable way.
One sees the same manipulative dynamic at play in how the U.S. freely tries to kill foreign leaders of countries it attacks. The U.S. repeatedly tried to kill Saddam at the start of the Iraq War, and -- contrary to Obama's pledges -- has done the same to Gadaffi in Libya. NATO has explicitly declared Gadaffi to be a "legitimate target." But just imagine if an Iraqi came to the U.S. and attempted to bomb the White House or kill George Bush, or if a Libyan (or Afghan, Pakistani, or Yemeni) did the same to Obama. Would anyone in American political circles be allowed to suggest this was a legitimate act of war? Of course not: screaming "Terrorism!" would be the only acceptable reaction....
UPDATE: Bolstering the definition of Terrorism I provided above, Jonathan Schwarz several years ago documented how establishment political and media circles in the U.S. routinely referred to the 1983 bombing of a Marine barracks in Lebanon as "Terrorism." As Schwarz wrote:
Whatever else you might say about those bombings, they weren't terrorism, at least if words have any meaning. They were attacks on military targets. But this goes really, really deep in U.S. political culture. The basic idea is: we are allowed to send our military anywhere on earth to do anything to anyone. And if someone tries to fight back—even by targeting our military when it's stationed in their country and killing them—that is fundamentally AGAINST THE RULES.
Propping up that warped mindset is the central purpose of the term Terrorism.

FBI thwarts more of its own 'homegrown' state terrorist plots: timely boost for expanding 'national security'

Suspects in Seattle terrorist plot had troubled pasts, detailed attack plans
U.S. Justice Department says two men have been arrested in a plot to attack a military recruit processing station in Seattle with machine guns and grenades...Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, also known as Joseph Anthony Davis, 33, of SeaTac, and Walli Mujahidh, aka Frederick Domingue Jr., 32, of Los Angeles, appeared in U.S. District Court in Seattle on Thursday on charges alleging they purchased machine guns and grenades from a paid police informant earlier this week as they moved into the final stages of planning an attack they hoped would inspire an uprising among radical Muslims in the United States...The informant a five-time felon paid for his efforts predicted, according to the complaint, that the case would make the news....As a result, many of the conversations and actions of the men over the past four weeks were recorded, according to the charges...June 14 the informant showed Abdul-Latif several weapons provided by federal agents for a "show and tell." The men were arrested after the informant delivered three automatic rifles and several grenades — all secretly rendered inoperable — to the men Tuesday night at a warehouse in Seattle. According to charges, Abdul-Latif was recorded saying his anger over the United States military's real or perceived activities in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen motivated the planned attack. The men face up to life in prison if convicted. Details in the complaint and gleaned from other court documents and interviews show the men to be "self-radicalized," with no known affiliation to al-Qaida or other terrorist organizations...FBI agents seized a number of DVDs and other materials from Abdul-Latif's home. "There was a lot of mujahedeen stuff. A lot of radical literature," the source said. "Driven by a violent, extreme ideology, these two young Americans are charged with plotting to murder men and women who were enlisting in the armed forces to serve and protect our country," said Todd Hinnen, acting assistant attorney general for national security, adding that this "is one of a number of recent plots targeting our military here at home." http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2015404971_terrorplot24m...

December 2010: A 21-year-old U.S. citizen, who used the name Muhammad Hussain after converting to Islam, accused of attempting to blow up the Armed Forces Career Center near Baltimore. The explosive device he used was a fake, supplied to him by undercover FBI agents.
November 2010: Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, of Corvallis, Ore., was arrested after FBI sting operation in a plot to set off a bomb at the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in downtown Portland's Pioneer Square.
October 2010: Farooque Ahmed, a 34-year-old Virginia man originally from Pakistan, charged in a plot to coordinate a series of bombings in Washington, D.C., subway stations believed he was working with al-Qaida operatives to plan the attacks, but the men were actually undercover FBI agents.
May 2010: A Pakistan-born U.S. citizen, Faisal Shahzad, 30, arrested for botched attempt to detonate a car bomb in New York's Times Square attempting to flee the country on a Dubai-bound airplane about to take off from Kennedy Airport.
September 2009: Hosam Smadi, a 19-year-old Jordanian man, was arrested after an FBI sting in which he attempted to detonate a car bomb that he parked beneath a 60-story Dallas skyscraper. The bomb was a fake supplied by FBI agents.
September 2009: Michael Finton, 30, a former fry cook from Illinois who converted to Islam while in prison, attempted to destroy the Paul Findley Federal Building in Springfield, Ill. Finton used a van he thought was packed with explosives supplied to him by undercover FBI agents.

FBI protected their informant for years 'Whitey' Bulger for years.
He and his partner lived openly for 15 yrs. as Charles & Carol Gasko at the same address in Sta. Monica, CA
For 16 years, the FBI pursued James “Whitey” Bulger, on the lam since 1995, chasing the elusive Boston mobster across five continents. Tuesday agents tried a new approach: They blasted photos of Bulger’s longtime girlfriend, Catherine Elizabeth Greig, across television screens and Twitter....“Although there were those who have doubted our resolve . . . it has never wavered,’’ said Richard DesLauriers, special agent in charge of the Boston division of the FBI, which put Bulger on its “Ten Most Wanted” list in 1999. “We followed every lead, we explored every possibility, and when those leads ran out we did not sit back and wait for the phone to ring.’...The investigation of Bulger’s crime ring has ensnared dozens of former associates, friends and family members... Bulger ratted out rivals in the Italian Mafia as a government informant, and had political connections. His brother, William M. Climate of Fear: Jim Risen v. Obama administration
http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/
Glenn Greenwald
The Obama DOJ's effort to force New York Times investigative journalist Jim Risen to testify in a whistleblower prosecution and reveal his source is really remarkable and revealing in several ways; it should be receiving much more attention than it is. On its own, the whistleblower prosecution and accompanying targeting of Risen are pernicious, but more importantly, it underscores the menacing attempt by the Obama administration -- as Risen yesterday pointed out -- to threaten and intimidate whistleblowers, journalists and activists who meaningfully challenge what the government does in secret.

PENTAGON/NATO - THE ULTIMATE TRANSFORMER
"...NATO is no more than the weaponized European arm of the Pentagon..."
http://atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/MF21Ak01.html http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28381.htm
by By Pepe Escobar
...The war on Libya started as the Pentagon's Africom first African war - remember Odyssey Dawn? - then merged into NATO's first Mediterranean and also first African war. NATO's overt agenda is to rule the Mediterranean - Ancient Rome's mare nostrum - as a NATO lake. That explains the current Pentagon/NATO 'Sea Breeze 2011' naval exercise in the Black Sea, off the coast of Ukraine and quite close to the Sebastopol-based Russian Black Sea fleet. The Pentagon, joined by the United Kingdom, Azerbaijan, Algeria, Belgium, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Macedonia, Moldova, Sweden, Turkey and Ukraine...all except Algeria and Moldova... Troop Contributing Nations for NATO's war in Afghanistan.
'Sea breeze ' is not a pop song; it is overt intimidation directly related to Syria. Russia's Black Sea fleet has a base in Syria - that is, in the Mediterranean. The Pentagon/NATO want it gone. Thus the categorical imperative of regime change in Syria.
So Libya is just the beginning. Russian ambassador to NATO Dmitri Rogozin has been quick to point out, "the war in Libya means ... the beginning of [NATO's] expansion south." Transformer NATO - global Robocop - is on a roll from Southeastern Europe to the Eastern Mediterranean; from the Persian Gulf to South and Central Asia. All hail the One Model Army....

Rules of Transition to the New World Order
8/28/06 http://www.paktribune.com/news/print.php?id=152528
by Anwaar Hussain, eagleeye@emirates.net.ae
It is no more a secret that a select group of powerful men of a certain Western Judeo-Christian strain (Anglo-U$raeli henceforth), and their regional touts, are indeed busy carving a new world for us all, a world where we all will be ‘equal’ at last.
It is also a fact that all world orders, from the olden to the present ones, have always been shaped and reshaped from the Middle East. Earlier, it was done in the name of God by kings and Crusaders where adding huge chunks of real estate to the Empire was their actual aim. Now, it is being done in the name of liberty by ruling charlatans for the left over riches in the innards of the earth. While the convenient banner of divinity has been replaced by the equally expedient flag of freedom, we the underdogs, force-fed with the illusory diet of religion and patriotism, continue as ever to remain the fodder, fuel and engine for the schema of the devil.
That we cannot learn not to be their tools remains yet another unfortunate fact. History repeats itself and we are its unlucky medium. Therefore, for a smooth transition from the present to the future, there are rules that need to be learned:
Rule # 1. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, the war is being fought against a stateless, invisible enemy called a ‘terrorist’. As the enemy is unseen and unquantifiable, so too shall be the end of the war. This is an endless war.
Rule # 2. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, for the sake of liberty and freedom, all rules of fair play, standards of justice and canons of human rights etc etc. shall stand null and void for the duration of war (see rule # 1 for the duration of war).
Rule # 3. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, none shall resist the onslaught. It is a ‘war on terror’ and any one resisting it shall be ‘terrorist’.
Rule # 4. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, when the ‘liberators’ help each other, it shall be called ‘helping friends’ but when the victims do the same, it shall be called ‘abetting terrorists’.
Rule # 5. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, the ‘liberators’ may kill hundreds of thousands of human beings. This is called ‘War on Terror’ and there is neither any limit on human casualties in such wars nor is there a need to prove guilt by trial. A single ‘liberator’ being killed in retaliation, however, shall be viewed as an ‘act of unmitigated terror’ inviting an overwhelming rejoinder.
Rule # 6. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, the ‘liberators’ may capture, imprison and torture thousands at will. The victims doing the same, even in limited numbers like one or two, shall be called ‘kidnapping’ and a pure act of ‘terror’ and a ‘dis/proportionate’ response shall be immediately proffered.
Rule # 7. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, as a general guideline to the media pundits, it shall always be the Arabs that attack first and the Anglo-U$raelis who defend themselves. This shall be called ‘retaliation’. Likewise, a single Anglo-U$raeli being killed shall be called ‘terrorism’ and the Anglo-U$raelis killing the Arabs et al, an act of ‘self-defense’, or ‘collateral damage’, as the need may be.
Rule # 8. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, as a further guideline for the media pundits, when Anglo-U$raelis kill too many civilians, the world must call for ‘restraint’ and the needless uproar be termed as ‘reaction of the International Community’. On the other hand, the world community must be ‘outraged’ over the act of a single killing on the Anglo-U$raeli side and must ask the international public to condemn the ‘evil doers’.
Rule # 9. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, plots after ‘terror plots’ shall be discovered ‘just in time’ as and when the need arises. If the world citizenry does not act spooked enough, this activity of discovering terror plots ‘just in time’ shall be ceased forthwith. From then on, as a collective punishment, such terror plots shall be allowed to be carried through to their logical ends.
Rule # 10. In this Anglo-U$raeli campaign for New World Order, the solitary role of the United Nations Organization shall be that of a debris sweeper after the Anglo-U$raelis conduct their operations. In between these operations, however, the organization may be used, whenever deemed necessary, to impose sanctions to soften the next targets for future operations...
Note : While there shall be no abrogation in the Rules of Transition for the duration of ‘War on Terror’ (see rule # 1 for the duration of war), further additions, as the need arises, may be made from time to time. General public be warned:
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

U.S. defeat is 'victory', 'transition' to 'reconciliation' with unbeatable national resistance:

White House shifts Afghanistan strategy towards talks with Taliban
7/19/2010 http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/
"There is a change of mindset in DC," a senior official said...a power-sharing agreement in Afghanistan.."There is no military solution...The US laid down basic conditions for any group seeking negotiations: end violence, and accept the Afghan constitution. Peter Bergen, an Afghanistan specialist told US Institute of Peace seminar last week there were a host of problems with such a strategy, not least, why the Taliban should enter negotiations "when they think they are winning".

Taliban: Won’t Negotiate With Terrorists
http://c4ss.org/content/7008
Whatever one thinks about them.. no amount of death or imperial diplomacy will persuade Taliban to “come into the political process” imposed by the US.

When Americans serving in your country at great cost in terms of our lives and treasures, hear themselves compared with occupiers, told that they are only here to advance their own narrow interests and likened to the brutal enemies of the Afghan people, my people in turn are filled with confusion and they grow weary of our effort here. Mothers and fathers of fallen soldiers, spouses of soldiers who have lost arms and legs, children of those who lost their lives in your country — they ask themselves about the meaning of their loved one’s sacrifices."
U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, 6/18/11

Because of the gains made in Afghanistan and in the intervening months, I believe it was from a position of strength that the president was able to lay out the next phase of our Afghan strategy... If you really stop and think about it, we have met our major goals in Afghanistan as articulated by the president. We have come to the point where this mission can transition.
John Kerry

The aim of our civilian surge was to give Afghans a stake in their country's future and provide credible alternatives to extremism and insurgency... Measured against these goals, and considering the obstacles we face, we are and should be encouraged by how much has been accomplished... the United States will not abandon our values or support a political process that undoes the social progress made in the past decade. But we believe a political solution that meets these conditions is possible.

U.S. proves again: military power cannot defeat national resistance

6/24/11 Hundreds Support Gadhafi at Tripoli rally
Supporters of Moammar Gadhafi rallied Thursday in Tripoli after the Libyan leader lashed out at NATO over civilian casualties, calling the alliance "murderers"...Libya says 19 people, including at least three children and other civilians, were killed in a strike near the town of Surman, some 40 miles (60 kilometers) west of Tripoli...a day after NATO acknowledged one of its airstrikes may have slammed into a civilian neighborhood in Tripoli. Libyan officials said nine civilians were killed in that strike...
Reports of civilian deaths in NATO strikes have provoked intense anger... Some women at the demonstration, armed, vowed to fight to defend their country and its leader. "Everyone is training since high school for a day like today," said dentist Hanin Khalil, 30, an aging Beretta submachine gun slung over her shoulder. "Not only (I) have a weapon. All people have weapons to protect themselves from NATO."....Gadhafi blasted the alliance for that strike, calling NATO "criminals" and "savages" and asking rhetorically: "Is this house a military target?...Gadhafi warned the alliance its more than three-month mission in Libya is a "crusader's campaign" that could come back to haunt the West. "What you are doing will rebound against you and against the world with destruction, desolation and terrorism. You are launching a second crusader war that might extend to Africa, Europe and America," he said in an audio address first aired on Libyan state television late Wednesday. "Go on and attack us for two years, three years or even 10 years. But in the end, the aggressor is the one who will lose...". Meanwhile the International Criminal Court in The Hague will rule Monday whether to order the arrest of Gadhafi for allegedly orchestrating deadly attacks on civilians....http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2015403325_apmllibya.html

UPCOMING U.S. SPONSORED KINETIC ACTIONS

Turkish Actions Designed To Trigger NATO Confrontation With Syria?
by Rick Rozoff June 21, 2011
Betrayed by NATO after Israel’s high seas attack on the Mavi Marmara just over one year ago, Turkey may be on its way to becoming a military launch pad for the Alliance’s operations against its erstwhile ally, Syria. Rick Rozoff fleshes out Turkey’s sinister role in the US-led counter revolutionary charge in the Middle East.
http://www.voltairenet.org/Turkish-Actions-Designed-To
In 2003 the U.S. ambassador to NATO at the time, Nicholas Burns, stated in testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee:
"NATO needs to pivot from its inward focus on Europe - which was necessary and appropriate during the Cold War - to an outward focus on the arc of countries where most of the threats are today - in Central and South Asia, and in the Middle East. NATO's mandate is still to defend Europe and North America. But we don't believe we can do that by sitting in Western Europe, or Central Europe, or North America. We have to deploy our conceptual attention and our military forces east and south. NATO's future, we believe, is east, and is south. It's in the Greater Middle East."
Last week, a feature by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton excoriating the political leadership of Syria appeared in the London-based Arabic-language daily Asharq Al-Awsat. Saudi-supported and printed in twelve locations...her comments (in English and Arabic) were intended to signal to Arab readers and the world at large that the American position toward Damascus is becoming more stringent and confrontational, evoking Clinton’s statements toward the leadership of Ivory Coast and Libya earlier in the year. Her characteristically imperious, contemptuous and inflammatory comments, indeed threats, included:
“In his May 19 speech, President Obama echoed demonstrators’ basic and legitimate demands...President Assad, he said, could either lead that transition or get out of the way.
“It is increasingly clear that President Assad has made his choice.” “...President Assad is showing his true colors by embracing the repressive tactics of his ally Iran and putting Syria onto the path of a pariah state. “By following Iran’s lead, President Assad is placing himself and his regime on the wrong side of history...If President Assad believes he can act with impunity because the international community hopes for his cooperation on other issues, he is wrong about this as well. He and his regime are certainly not indispensable."
The Wall Street Journal reported June 18 that the Washington administration is preparing a case against Syrian President Bashar Assad and other government officials at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. The same newspaper feature added that "The U.S. is also exploring ways to more directly target Syria's oil and gas revenue..."...
"Turkey said 'yes' to three tasks within NATO: the takeover of Benghazi airport for the delivery of humanitarian aid, control of the air corridor and the involvement of Turkish naval forces in the corridor between Benghazi and Crete."...

Massive Pro-Govt/Anti-U.S. Demonstrations in Syria
http://www.voltairenet.org/21-June-massive-demonstrations-in
Several million Syrians throughout the country took to the streets 21 June 2011 to express their support for... President Bashar Al-Assad.The crowds were particularly dense and impressive in Damascus Alep, Tartous and Homs. The scale of the demonstrations, unprecedented in the history of Syria, are a token of the huge popular support enjoyed by the «regime», so widely demonized by Western media and political leaders. For the sake of comparison, at the peak of the anti-government rallies of the past three months, the overall number of protesters in the entire country was between 150 000 and 200 000. Syrians living in the country and whose children are serving in the army don’t swallow the disinformation dished out...what they do know is that their country is prey to a destabilization plot at the hands of armed groups piloted from abroad, a prelude to a possible NATO aggression.

The military operation to destabilize Syria and the propaganda campaign that came with it have been orchestrated by a coalition of states under US coordination, in exactly the same way that NATO coordinates its member and non-member states to bombard and stigmatize Libya....the Obama administration may decide to revive the 2003 Syrian Accountability Act allowing it to freeze Syrian assets independently of a UN resolution or Congress approval. Recent history has shown, especially as regards Cuba and Iran, that Washington can easily convince its European partners to endorse sanctions that it applies unilaterally. Thus, the stakes have shifted from the battle field towards the media. Public opinion will allow the wool to be pulled over its eyes all the more given its ignorance of Syria and its blind faith in the new technologies. At first, the propaganda campaign focused the public’s attention on the crimes allegedly committed by the "regime" so as to avert any questions regarding the nature of the new opposition....since, the anti-Bashar propaganda has been based on reality-reversal..."Gay Girl in Damascus", created 21 February 2011 edited in English by 25 year-old Amina, the website became a source of reference for Western media...the plight of a young lesbian under Bashar’s dictatorship and the day-to-day unfolding of the terrible repression unleashed against the revolution. As a gay woman, she garnered the protective empathy of Western web surfers who mobilized as soon as her arrest by the secret services of the "regime" was announced. Amina was a fiction. Betrayed by his IP address, a US 40 year-old "student"...participated in a pro-Western opposition conference held in Turkey, urging NATO intervention....
Reality reversal is a principle being applied on a large scale...recall UN reports on the humanitarian crisis in Libya alleging that tens of thousands of immigrant workers were fleeing the country to escape from violence. The conclusion drawn and spewed by the Western media was that the Gaddafi "regime" had to be toppled in favor of the Benghazi rebels. And yet, it was not the government of Tripoli responsible for this tragedy, but the so-called revolutionaries in Cyrenaica hunting down black Africans. Stirred by a racist ideology, they accused them of being at the service of Colonel Gaddafi and lynched whoever they could get their hands on.
In Syria, the images of armed groups perched on the rooftops and firing at random into the crowd or on police forces were broadcast on national television networks. Yet, these same images were relayed and used by Western and Saudi television channels to attribute these crimes to the government of Damascus. At the end of the day, the plan to destabilize Syria is not working all that well. It succeeded in persuading public opinion that the country is in the grips of a brutal dictatorship, but it also welded the vast majority of the Syrian population firmly behind its government.

US arms Taiwan against most feared rival China to salvage US doomed global supremacy:

Taiwan Develops Advanced Missiles

China and Taiwan is a delicate balance, so the sale of U.S. weapons to Taiwan has always been ultra-sensitive.Although they have sold arms to Taiwan for decades, U.S. officials risk upsetting the uneasy strategic and economic relationship with China with new weapon sales. In January 2010 Beijing suspended military exchanges after Washington approved a $6.4 billion arms package to Taiwan. A spokesman for the island’s National Ministry of Defense...stopped short of saying the United States, its main arms supplier, is too slow in processing the island’s requests for U.S.-made weapons. Taipei is urging Washington to approve as many as 66 F-16 more fighter jets

Iran: "30 arrested in American spy ring"
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2015399126_iranspies23...
CAIRO — Iran's Press TV announced Wednesday the government of the Islamic Republic arrested 30 people in May on suspicion of spying for the United States. The report quoted Haida Moslehi, the director of Iranian intelligence saying an additional 42 people had been identified as CIA operatives in various countries working in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Malaysia, among others, to make contact with Iranians who could provide important information on everything from key infrastructure elements to the oil and gas industry to the nuclear program, it said. The alleged espionage operation used various companies, including a job-finding center, for its work, said the English-language report. It suggested there were double agents involved, and at least one of those arrested already had been convicted. The report identified Jamshid Sadegh Hosseini as a "convicted U.S. nuclear spy" who had handed over "valuable information" about the nuclear program. Hosseini was quoted as saying he had been called by a recruitment agency, asked to come to a meeting and then enticed to report on activities with promises of more education abroad, as well as a foreign bank account. The Press TV report said Hosseini was directed on where to collect his money from Google Earth, the mapping service that has provoked Iran and elsewhere because political opposition groups have used it to help pinpoint areas of police operations during protests....

Google Ideas think tank gathering former extremists to battle radicalization

Allen McDuffee writes The Washington Post’s Think Tanked blog. Follow him on Twitter here.
Technology giant Google, having conquered the Internet and the world around it, is taking on a new challenge: violent extremism through its eight-month-old think tank, Google Ideas... paying for 80 former Muslim extremists, neo-Nazis, U.S. gang members and other former radicals to gather in Dublin this weekend to explore how technology can play a role in de-radicalization efforts around the globe. The “formers,” as they have been dubbed by Google, will be surrounded by 120 thinkers, activists, philanthropists and business leaders. And the hope is that together they will dissect the question of what draws some people, especially young people, to extremist movements and why some of them leave.
“We are trying to reframe issues like radicalization and see how we can apply technology to it,” said Jared Cohen, the 29-year-old former State Department official who agreed to head Google Ideas with the understanding he would host such a conference. “Technology is part of every challenge in the world, and a part of every solution.”
In forming Google Ideas, company officials said, they were eager to move beyond the traditional think tank model of conducting studies and publishing books, saying their “think/do tank” would make action a central part of its mission...is also proving to be provocative, as Google steps into an arena traditionally left to governments...

Head of the Pentagon's missile defense system says Israel's Iron Dome and Arrow systems will be integrated into a regional defense
system General Patrick O'reilly, head of the Pentagon Missile Defense Agency, said Monday. In an interview published in the American Defense News journal... the Israeli missile batteries may also protect Arab countries who are allies of the U.S. but with which Israel has no diplomatic ties....Israel is the only country today employing operational missile systems that are capable of intercepting rockets and missiles of different sizes and ranges. The Arrow and Iron Dome systems were developed with American aid and in cooperation with American security companies. A large part of the systems' trials were conducted in the U.S.
Iron Dome is also the only system in the world that has succeeded in intercepting rockets in a real-time theater, by shooting down eight Grad rockets launched from the Gaza Strip two months ago. This week, the Israeli Air Force is conducting its largest interception exercise to date, deploying missile batteries on the ground and preparing for rocket launched from Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and Iran.

“Third Palestinian Intifada” Apple App Removed
http://www.imemc.org/article/61534
Apple removed an application called "The Third Palestinian Intifada" for purchase for Mac, and iPhone users after Yuli-Yoel Edelstein, Israeli Minister for Public Affairs and Immigrant Absorption, mailed a letter to the Apple Corporation requesting the "immediate removal" of the application.Tuesday, Mac officials had decided to keep the app running despite Israeli pressures to take it down. However, CNN reported today that Mac corporations have removed the application for future purchase. Edelstein wrote that the app was "anti-Israel and anti-Zionist" and calls for an immediate Palestinian uprising against the state of Israel. The Arabic language app was developed in Dubai to update users on upcoming Palestinian protests and news articles critical of the Israeli regime. "The Third Palestinian Intifada" was released June 15 and was free for download from App Store until Wednesday, June 22, 2011. The app was removed for "being offensive to large groups of people," an Apple spokesman told Haaretz. In May, United States attorney Larry Klayman sued Mark Zuckerburg, founder of Facebook, for over one billion dollars for not removing the Facebook group "The Third Palestinian Intifada" soon enough.

Withdrawal from Afghanistan is warmongers symbolic step

Obama and his war mongers want to deceive their nation and with this announcement...It comes as America simultaneously builds permanent bases in Afghanistan under the title of 'Strategic Agreement’ by forcing its stooge regime to sign and approve it while at the same time busying its invading forces in killing and persecuting the Afghan people in all corners of Afghanistan...It must be clarified that the assertion of American leaders about making headway in Afghanistan and Obama’s proclamation of them being in a stronger position are nothing more than baseless claims and propaganda. They have not gained progress in the battle field nor can they bring forth any proofs of this progress. The increase in troop levels since last year has only increased the loss in life and equipment on their side. And in this way, the increased blind bombings of villages, genocide, persecution of people and the destruction of people’s homes and farms to protect themselves cannot be called victory or progress by any sound mind...Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan again wants to make it clear that the solution for the Afghan crisis lies in the full withdrawal of all foreign troops immediately and until this does not happen, our armed struggle will increase from day to day. In Afghanistan, region, American and the rest of the world, hatred will only increase against all invading troops and will end up in the disgraceful defeat of the invading troops...

U.S. FROM BEGINNING TO END: NOW DOWN FOR THE COUNT:

Zbigniew Brzezinski: How the US provoked the Soviet Union into invading Afghanistan
Interview of Zbigniew Brzezinski, Le Nouvel Observateur (France), Jan 15-21, 1998
!!15 October 2001http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/BRZ110A.html
(Interview translated from the French by William Blum, former State Dept. employee, later the author of several books including Killing Hope: U.S. Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II and Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower.
Robert Gates, former director of the CIA, stated in his memoirs From the Shadows, that American intelligence services began to aid the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan six months before the Soviet intervention...you were national security adviser to President Carter therefore played a role in this affair. Is that correct?
Brzezinski: Yes. According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979. But the reality, closely guarded until now, is completely otherwise: Indeed July 3, 1979 President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him my opinion that this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention.
Q: Despite this risk, you were an advocate of this covert action. But perhaps you yourself desired this Soviet entry into war and looked to provoke it?
Brzezinski: It isn't quite that. We didn't push the Russians to intervene, but we knowingly increased the probability that they would.
Q: When the Soviets justified their intervention by asserting they intended to fight against secret involvement of the US in Afghanistan, people didn't believe them. However, there was a basis of truth. You don't regret anything today?
Brzezinski: Regret what? That secret operation was an excellent idea....drawing the Russians into the Afghan trap and you want me to regret it? The day the Soviets officially crossed the border, I wrote President Carter, in substance: We now have the opportunity of giving to the USSR its Vietnam war. Indeed, for almost 10 years, Moscow had to carry on a war unsupportable by the government, a conflict that brought about the demoralization and finally the breakup of the Soviet empire.
Q: And neither do you regret having supported the Islamic fundamentalists, having given arms and advice to future terrorists?
Brzezinski: What is most important to the history of the world? The Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet empire? Some stirred-up Moslems or the liberation of Central Europe and the end of the cold war?
Q: Some stirred-up Moslems? But it is said and repeated: Islamic fundamentalism represents a world menace today.
Brzezinski: Nonsense...That is stupid. There isn't a global Islam. Look at Islam in a rational manner and without demagoguery or emotion. It is the leading religion of the world with 1.5 billion followers...what is there in common among Saudi Arabian fundamentalism, moderate Morocco, Pakistan militarism, Egyptian pro-Western or Central Asian secularism? Nothing more than what unites Christian countries.

U.S. Secret Connections with the Muslim Brotherhood
Ian Johnson
http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2011/mar/10/our-secret-connecti...
.... Since the 1950s, the United States has secretly struck up alliances with the Brotherhood or its offshoots on issues as diverse as fighting communism and calming tensions among European Muslims. And if we look to history, we can see a familiar pattern: each time, US leaders have decided that the Brotherhood could be useful and tried to bend it to America’s goals, and each time, maybe not surprisingly, the only party that clearly has benefited has been the Brotherhood. How can Americans be unaware of this history? Credit a mixture of wishful thinking and a national obsession with secrecy, which has shrouded the US government’s extensive dealings with the Brotherhood.
Consider President Eisenhower. In 1953, the year before the Brotherhood was outlawed by Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser, a covert US propaganda program headed by the US Information Agency brought over three dozen Islamic scholars and civic leaders mostly from Muslim countries for what officially was an academic conference at Princeton University. The real reason behind the meeting was an effort to impress the visitors with America’s spiritual and moral strength, since it was thought that they could influence Muslims’ popular opinion better than their ossified rulers. The ultimate goal was to promote an anti-Communist agenda in these newly independent countries, many of which had Muslim majorities....starting in 2005, the State Department, taking account of the Brotherhood’s rising power in Egypt and elsewhere, launched an effort to woo the Brotherhood... All of this was backed by CIA analyses, one from 2006 saying the Brotherhood featured “impressive internal dynamism, organization, and media savvy.”... the CIA pushed for cooperation. As for the Obama administration, it carried over some of the people on the Bush team who had helped devise this strategy....

Where's our $17bn? Iraq demands return of oil money 'stolen by U.S...

In a letter to the UN sent last month the Iraqi parliament asked for help finding and recovering the money, which disappeared from the Development Fund of Iraq. The Integrity Committee called it a 'financial crime' but said UN Security Council resolutions prevent Iraq from making a claim against the United States...
U.S. led forces invaded Iraq in March 2003, over fears that its leader, Saddam Hussein, was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction. The same year, the CPA issued an order granting immunity to U.S. personnel and institutions working in Iraq. After the invasion, the U.S.led Iraq Survey Group concluded Iraq had ended its nuclear, chemical, and biological programs in 1991.

Over 50 years ago: then as now, US charges resistance with its own imperialist domination agenda and crimes:'communism', then, now, all-inclusive resistance called 'terrorism':

Senator John F. Kennedy, American Legion Convention, Miami Beach, FL October 18, 1960
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=74095
American strength relative to that of the Soviet Union has been slipping, and communism has been advancing steadily in every area of the world, until the Iron Curtain now rests on the island of Cuba, only 90 miles away. The implacable Communist drive for world domination, which now penetrates every continent and every section of the world, takes many forms; and the battle against communism is fought on many fronts. I would like to talk for a few minutes about one of those fronts, the front of military power. For it is here that the Communist advance, and relative American decline, can be most sharply seen; and it is here that the immediate danger to our survival is the greatest....every objective expert, every study commission, official or unofficial, Republican or Democrat, came to the same conclusion: We have been slipping and we are in danger. The Gaither Committee report, prepared in 1957 at the request of President Eisenhower, has been best summed up as portraying this country as a "nation moving in frightening course to the status of a second-class power."The Rockefeller Brothers report in 1958 said: "The United States is rapidly losing its lead over the U.S.S.R. in the military race."... I say that what we need are not reassurances, but strength, not words but weapons, and I intend to see that we get them....
But it is also clear that an increased military effort is not enough. More and better weapons are not enough. A reorganized Defense Department is not enough. For the harsh fact of the matter is that in the past 8 years not a single Soviet fighting man has crossed the frontier of the free world - not a single Soviet missile has been fired at the United States - not a single Soviet bomb has dropped on our cities or the cities of our allies.
Yet in those same 8 years Cuba has been lost to the Communists. Laos has begun to slip behind the Iron Curtain. Ghana and Guinea have moved toward the Soviet bloc. A revolution in Iraq virtually destroyed our Middle Eastern Baghdad Pact. The Communists have captured control of one of the key factions in the fight for the Congo. And Communist influence - propaganda and subversive activities - has grown and prospered in Latin America, in Asia, in Africa, and in the Middle East.In short, freedom has been on the defensive all over the globe and the Communists have made enormous gains without firing a single shot. For although military power gives stability and prestige to Communist activities, although it increases their prestige and perhaps their daring, military power is not the ultimate Communist weapon in the struggle for world domination.
Communists seek to undermine freedom, to achieve the triumph of communism by exploiting chaos and discontent in every corner of the world, by taking advantage of our weak spots, our failures to build the strong and stable governments which are the only guarantee of freedom. The Communists have a strategy for world conquest and that strategy rests in the future, as it has in the past, on the use of every weapon of economic and ideological conflict to win the allegiance of the uncommitted nations of the world and increase their dependence on the support of the Soviet Union, on the use of local Communist revolutionaries to subvert and destroy free government and on their belief that the United States lacks the will and the endurance to engage in a prolonged and difficult struggle for the protection of freedom. And I believe that their great successes of the past 8 years have encouraged them in this belief.I want Mr. Khrushchev to understand another thing: If the Democratic Party wins this election he will confront in the sixties an America which is not only militarily strong but which is waging the offensive for freedom on all the many fronts of the cold war....
We will restore the vitality of the American economy, increasing our rate of economic growth and caring for the needs of our own people so that the uncommitted peoples of the world will look once again to America and not to Moscow or Peiping for guidance and leadership in their own fight for economic progress. We will rebuild our diplomatic corps so that we can send skilled and compassionate men to represent us all over the world, men who know the problems and concerns of the areas in which they are stationed, who can represent the cause of freedom with credit, men who are selected for their ability and not the size of their campaign contributions. We will step up our efforts to educate the future leaders of Africa and Asia and Latin America. The youth of these areas are desperately in need of the training which will enable them to man the governments and run the economies of their developing nations. If we do not give them this training they will look for it behind the Iron Curtain where their misunderstanding of America will increase under Communist indoctrination. We will increase our Voice of America programs and all our other information services in order to carry the message of America to the world.

6/2008 RETOOLING U.S. PUBLIC DIPLOMACY AS A STRATEGIC INSTRUMENT OF FOREIGN POLICY
http://74.125.155.132/scholar?q=cache:gslIoyPd48kJ:scholar.google.com/+N...
"17 Apr 2011 – 21 ...www.scribd.com/doc/53168536/National-Security-Policy-and-Strategy-Volume-II-Pub1005
Joseph Nye’s introduction of the concept of “soft power” as an essential complement to “hardpower” captures the essence of public diplomacy. Nye wrote of the “soft power of attraction”essential “to draw target publics into the U.S. web of influence.”4 The achievement of U.S. foreign policy goals is greatly facilitated when more friends and allies share our interests and contribute totheir accomplishment. In the case of the War on Terror, victory is directly related to prevailing in a battle of ideas, which public diplomacy tools seek to shape. The 9/11 Commission called for action “to compete as vigorously on the ideological battle field as we do on the military and intelligence fronts.”5 The Department of State (DOS) Advisory Groupon Public Diplomacy, the General Accounting Office, the Heritage Foundation, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the 9/11 Commission have all issued reports stating that a greater emphasis is needed by the U.S. Government on public diplomacy. This chapter takes the position that current approaches to public diplomacy are flawed and must be reconsidered and appropriately funded in order to acquire the public diplomacy capabilities needed to win the War on Terror. Furthermore, public diplomacy must be integrated into the policymaking process in the form of a comprehensive and coherent strategy.
The areas of public diplomacy used to influence foreign target audiences are international information programs, educational and cultural exchange programs, and international nonmilitary broadcasting.11 Often included in a canvas of public diplomacy programs is the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), which operates at arm’s length from the Department of State, but whichDOS principally funds. NED’s mission is to assist democratic movements worldwide by leveragingits status as a private, non-profit entity primarily in the area of foreign elections.12The primary agencies involved in these areas are the State Dept, the International Broadcasting Bureau and the National Endowment for Democracy.13 Within the Department of State, the Office of International Information Programs (IIP) and the Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) focus on strategic communications and international exchanges respectively. In addition, the bipartisan Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) administers the Voice of America (VOA)and numerous surrogate entities such as Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and RadioMarti (broadcast to Cuba).14 Several new initiatives launched since 9/11 include Radio Sawa and a24 hour news channel, Alhurra (the free one), broadcast to the Middle East. The newest State Dept. entry aimed at “Telling America’s Story” is a web site for foreign audiences, http://www.america.gov.15
The National Security Strategy of the United States of America (NSS), published in March 2006,establishes two inseparable priorities: “fighting and winning the war on terror and promoting freedom as the alternative to tyranny and despair.”18
The NSS posits further: From the beginning, the War on Terror has been both a battle of arms and a battle of ideas – a fight against the terrorists and against their murderous ideology…. In the long run, winning the war on terror means winning the battle of ideas, for it is ideas that can turn the disenchanted into murderers willing to kill innocent victims.19 The diplomatic instrument of power is a critical component in the NSS’s objective to advance freedom and human dignity through democracy as the long-term antidote for transnational terrorism. Essential to this end is the continued reorientation of the Department of State toward transformational diplomacy.20 A key component of transformational diplomacy is the strengthening of public diplomacy in order to: advocate the policies and values of the United States in a clear, accurate, and persuasive way to a watching and listening world. This includes actively engaging foreign audiences, expanding educational opportunities for Americans to learn about foreign languages and cultures and for foreign students and scholars to study inthe United States; empowering the voices of our citizen ambassadors as well as those foreigners who share our commitment to a safer, more compassionate world; enlisting the support of the private sector; increasing our channels for dialogue with Muslim leaders and citizens; and confronting propaganda quickly, before myths and distortions have time to take root in the hearts and minds of people across the world.21 Since 9/11 there has been an increased focus on departments and agencies across the government contributing to the mission of improving America’s image. Besides the NED mentioned above, other U.S. Government agencies involved in de facto public diplomacy include the Peace Corps and USAID. Both involve people-to-people communication in U.S. Government funded programs in pursuit of U.S. policy interests, and as such both perform a strategic public relations function.22USAID, in particular, is charged with publicizing U.S. humanitarian assistance.23 Additionally, the Department of Defense (DOD) has embarked on initiatives to aggressively conduct foreign communications. The much maligned Office of Strategic Influence was a short-lived effort that came on the scene in the fall of 2001 and was later replaced by the Office of Strategic Communication, which has the mission of coordinating and disseminating combat information. The DOD funded contracts worth $300 million over five years to create media products aimed at improving the publicimage of the United States abroad. The Joint Psychological Operations Support Element of the U.S. Special Operations Command has been coordinating these efforts.24...
Majority support for the U.S.-led War on Terror can be found in only two of the fifteen countries surveyed, India and Russia, both of which have significant problems with domestic terrorists. However, in the case of India, America’s favorability rating dropped 15 points in one year.45Unfavorable attitudes persist in predominantly Muslim countries. By all accounts public diplomacy efforts in the Middle East are a failure. For example, in Egypt, a country that has received more U.S. aid in the past 20 years than any Muslim country by far, only 15 percent of Egyptians have a favorable opinion of the U.S.46 In the 2006 Pew survey the percentage of Egyptians supporting the U.S.-led war on terror remained at 10 percent, where it has hovered since 2002.47A 2006 GAO audit evaluating the effectiveness of the State Department’s public diplomacy programs focused on a continued inability to engage Muslim audiences. While some resources have been shifted to the Muslim world ranging from a 25 percent increase in the Near East to a 39 percent plus up in South Asia, the number of authorized overseas positions in regional bureaus held steady. Furthermore, the report concluded that human capital challenges, such as poor language proficiency and short tours of duty, are compounded by security concerns at most posts in the Muslim world. Consequently, public diplomacy officers in the Muslim world spent less time communicating with local audiences than their positions require.48The current mix of information programs, media programs, and cultural and educational exchanges should be reconsidered with greater emphasis placed on cultural and educational exchanges. Objective reports assessing the effectiveness of U.S. public diplomacy cited the cultural and educational exchange programs as the most effective. The media programs have been perceived as less effective due to the U.S. credibility problem in the target populations. While these perceptions persist, the U.S. will benefit from investing in local moderate media operations and those of our allies with common interests, but without the credibility stigma of the U.S. in the Middle East. Finally, an underdeveloped aspect of the information programs is translating more English language texts into Arabic. In the past century, only 10,000 English language books have been translated into Arabic.49The current trends in the effectiveness of U.S. public diplomacy are poor. In sum, the promise of America’s public diplomacy has not been realized due to a lack of political will, the absence of an overall strategy, a deficit of trained professionals, cultural constraints, structural shortcomings, and a scarcity of resources. Money alone will not solve the problem. Strong leadership and imaginative thinking, planning, and coordination are critical.50 Policymakers are beginning to understand that the Cold War public diplomacy structure must be retooled and appropriately resourced to make a more effective contribution to U.S. national security interests. At a minimum, the conceptualization and execution of public diplomacy programs mustreach its full potential. The goal of spreading freedom and democracy throughout the globe is unrealizable “unless America has a more coordinated, cooperative mechanism tailored for public outreach.”51...
Many challenges face the U.S. as it seeks to reverse a steady decline in the world’s regard for its image and policies. The beginning of a new presidential Administration in 2009 is a critical window of opportunity to take concrete steps to regain America’s “soft power,” the power to attract the world to U.S. values and culture. Public diplomacy should be regarded as a strategic instrument of foreign policy and given resources and leadership commensurate with that role. Success in the War on Terror will remain elusive absent such action

Stronger Net Security System Deployed
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/25/science/25trust.html
A small group of Internet security specialists gathered in Singapore this week to start up a global system to make e-mail and e-commerce more secure“It won’t matter where you are in the world or who you are in the world, you’re going to be able to authenticate everyone and everything,” said Dan Kaminsky, an independent network security researcher who is one of the engineers involved in the project...The Singapore event included an elaborate technical ceremony to create and then securely store numerical keys that will be kept in three hardened data centers there, in Zurich and in San Jose, Calif. The keys and data centers are working parts of a technology known as Secure DNS, or DNSSEC. DNS refers to the Domain Name System, which is a directory that connects names to numerical Internet addresses. Preliminary work on the security system had been going on for more than a year, but this was the first time the system went into operation, even though it is not quite complete. The three centers are fortresses made up of five layers of physical, electronic and cryptographic security, making it virtually impossible to tamper with the system. Four layers are active now. The fifth, a physical barrier, is being built inside the data center....Internet security specialists said the new security protocol would initially affect Web traffic and e-mail. Most users should be mostly protected by the end of the year, but the effectiveness for a user depends on the participation of the government, Internet providers and organizations and businesses visited online. Eventually the system is expected to have a broad effect on all kinds of communications, including voice calls that travel over the Internet, known as voice-over-Internet protocol....The deployment of Secure DNS will significantly lower the cost of adding a layer of security, making it more likely that services built on the technology will be widely available, according to computer network security specialists. It will also potentially serve as a foundation technology for an ambitious United States government effort begun this spring to create a system to ensure “trusted identities” in cyberspace ['identity ecosystem' below]

Pentagon Gets Cyberwar Guidelines

Signed more than a month ago, the orders cap a two-year Pentagon effort to draft U.S. rules of the road for cyber warfare weave and cyber capabilities into U.S. war fighting strategy, as the U.S. begins to work with allies on global ground rules... defense officials and cyber security experts told The Associated Press.. some of the cyber capabilities the military may use during peacetime and conflict range from planting a computer virus to using cyberattacks to bring down an enemy's electrical grid or defense network....Military officials have warned repeatedly of cyberattacks and intrusions coming out of China, Russia and Eastern Europe...Incoming Pentagon chief Leon Panetta, the outgoing CIA director, said the U.S. must be aggressive in offensive and defensive countermeasures...the Defense Department has begun sharing classified threat intelligence with a handful of companies to help them identify and block malicious cyber activity on their networks...the program could be a model for Homeland Security as it works with companies that run critical infrastructure such as power plants, the electric grid and financial systems.Congress members are working on a number of bills to address cybersecurity encouraging such public-private partnerships...

"Identity Ecosystem"
...Essentially, the plan is to create an online “identity ecosystem” where users’ identities are authenticated using more secure credentials than a username, password, and your mother’s maiden name. The most likely approach is to confirm your identity based on the device you’re using — such as a keychain fob, a unique identity chip in your computer or a code sent to your mobile phone (something Google started doing for people who opt into its two-step verification security mode for Gmail). Former CIA Officials Admit To Faking Bin Laden Video
5/27/10 http://groups.google.com/group/total_truth_sciences/browse_thread/thread...
Military psy-ops took over the operation after CIA project failed to take off
Two former CIA officials admitted the CIA’s Iraq Operations Group created a fake video in which intelligence officers dressed up as Osama Bin Laden and his cronies in an effort to defame the terrorist leader throughout the middle east. The details are outlined in a Washington Post article by investigative reporter and former Army Intelligence case officer Jeff Stein [http://blog.washingtonpost.com/spy-talk/2010/05/cia_group_had_wacky_i...o_d.html]....
Intelcenter, the U.S. monitoring group that routinely releases Bin Laden video and audio, much of which have been proven to be either rehashed old footage or outright fakes, is an offshoot of IDEFENSE, a web security company that monitors intelligence from the middle east. IDEFENSE is heavily populated by long serving ex military intelligence officials, such as senior military psy-op intelligence officer Jim Melnick, who served 16 years in the US army and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in psychological operations. Melnick has also worked directly for former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Intelcenter notoriously released the “laughing hijackers” tape and claimed it was an Al-Qaeda video, despite the fact that the footage was obtained by a “security agency” at a 2000 Bin Laden speech. IntelCenter was also caught adding its logo to a tape at the same time as Al-Qaeda’s so-called media arm As-Sahab added its logo, proving the two organizations were one and the same.
Could the CIA group of “dark skinned actors” have been behind the infamous December 2001 “Fat nosed” Bin Laden video, that was magically found in a house in Jalalabad after anti-Taliban forces moved in? The tape featured a fat Osama laughing and joking about how he’d carried out 9/11. The video was also mistranslated in order to manipulate viewer opinion and featured “Bin Laden” praising two of the hijackers, only he got their names wrong. This Osama also used the wrong hand to write with and wore gold rings, a practice in opposition to the Muslim faith. Despite the fact that the man in the video looks nothing like Bin Laden, the CIA stood by it and declared it to be the official “9/11 confession video” [ see: JIHAD: The Great CIA Game]

Fake Saddam video plot
http://www.theworld.org/2010/05/fake-saddam-video-plot/
MARCO WERMAN: When it comes to covert CIA operations, there is the high tech, like the remote control drones...then there’s the outlandish, like trying to kill Cuba’s Fidel Castro with an exploding cigar....here’s a more recent outlandish CIA plot. an attempt to discredit Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein on the eve of the Iraq war... produce a fake video of Saddam having sex with a teenage boy. SpyTalk columnist Jeff Stein wrote about this in his Washington Post column SpyTalk...
JEFF STEIN: they were kicking around ideas in the Iraq operations group of what psychological warfare or information operations to do. One idea was to create a video that would look like a secretly recorded video, grainy, black and white kind of thing, of Saddam having sex with a teenage boy.... didn’t fly.
WERMAN: this wasn’t a flash in the pan. Your column mentions another CIA covert idea that involves, again, sex with children. This was a video that actually was made to discredit Osama Bin Laden. What did it show?
STEIN: Right, that was along the same lines. The agency found a contractor to make another video that would show Osama Bin Laden and his cronies sitting around a campfire passing around a bottle of whiskey and talking about having sex with their favorite boys and so on. This one was actually made... it took about six weeks...professional makeup artists. “Darker skinned” CIA employees were recruited to act the part of Osama and his circle. a lot of money was thrown at it and they did do it.... I know someone who participated in it. I’m not going to say exactly who it was, but someone who participated in making this film gave me the details, even voice coaches were provided....It was done in a secret location out in Virginia near Culpepper, Virginia

Obama wants credit for cleaning up ‘big mess’
“We stabilized the financial system,” the president said. “We made sure that we ended one war and started putting another war on a path where we could start bring more troops home. We restored a sense around the world of what American values and ideals were all about. We had to address an auto industry that was on the verge of liquidation. We had to get the economy moving again and we had to get jobs created again.”

US/IMF'WB blames Greece for global crisis: fear hat tens of thousands fighting masses in the streets will be 'contagious'
Greek woes hit world markets
Global markets hit a pocket of turbulence Wednesday as a year-old European bailout for Greece appeared to be unraveling, as further deep austerity cuts trigger protests in Athens threatening to topple the Greek government in a chain of events investors fear will end in a globally destabilizing default on the nation’s debt obligations.
Prime Minister George Papandreou struggled to garner support for a new package of €28 billion ($39.5 billion)more austerity cuts demanded by the International Monetary Fund which granted debt-ridden Greece €110 billion ($155 billion) in bailout loans for severe austerity cuts....
Some forces threaten Greece's default on the original 'bailout' would trigger financial chaos like the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers in Sept. 2008

Oceans on brink of catastrophe: Marine life facing mass extinction 'within one human generation'
http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/oceans-on-brink-of-catas...
The world's oceans are faced with an unprecedented loss of species comparable to the great mass extinctions of prehistory, a major report suggests today. The seas are degenerating far faster than anyone has predicted, the report says, because of the cumulative impact of a number of severe individual stresses, ranging from climate warming and sea-water acidification, to widespread chemical pollution and gross overfishing.
The coming together of these factors is now threatening the marine environment with a catastrophe "unprecedented in human history", according to the report, from a panel of leading marine scientists brought together in Oxford earlier this year by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)... the potential extinction of species, from large fish at one end of the scale to tiny corals at the other, is directly comparable to the five great mass extinctions in the geological record, during each of which much of the world's life died out. They range from the Ordovician-Silurian "event" of 450 million years ago, to the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction of 65 million years ago, which is believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs. The worst of them, the event at the end of the Permian period, 251 million years ago, is thought to have eliminated 70 per cent of species on land and 96 per cent of all species in the sea
