12/19/12 Some "Soul Searching" on 'gun Violence'

“There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, producing dictatorship without tears... producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it...distracted from desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods..."

Deaths In Other Nations Since WW II Due To US Interventions
4/24/07 By James A. Lucas, http://www.countercurrents.org/lucas240407.htm
This study reveals that U.S. military forces were directly responsible for about 10 to 15 million deaths during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and the two Iraq Wars. The Korean War also includes Chinese deaths while the Vietnam War also includes fatalities in Cambodia and Laos. The American public probably is not aware of these numbers and knows even less about the proxy wars which the United States is also responsible for... between nine and 14 million deaths in Afghanistan, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, East Timor, Guatemala, Indonesia, Pakistan and Sudan.... The remaining deaths in smaller smaller constitute over half the total number... Virtually all parts of the world have been the target of U.S. intervention. The overall conclusion reached is that the United States, since WWII has most likely been responsible for the deaths of between 20 and 30 million people in wars and conflicts around the world. To the families and friends of these victims it makes little difference whether the causes were U.S. military action, proxy military forces, U.S. provision of military supplies or advisors, or other ways, such as economic pressures...

The Weapons Continuum
12/19/12 http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/18/the-weapons-continuum/
No one can logically claim that everyone should be able to possess nuclear weapons. Thus everyone must agree to the concept of weapons control somewhere on the continuum... Nuclear weapons can cause widespread death and destruction, so we ban them. Why do we allow such wide access to guns?...people should first depend upon law enforcement to protect themselves. What stands behind this provision is very important: the real good of having a social structure in which individuals give up certain individual liberties in order to become citizens of a society. .. If one is unhappy with the current state of affairs, the legitimate venue is the ballot box and not a rifle or some other weapon. The rule of law dictates that within a society we rely upon our police and legal system to make us secure....The inclination to resort to gun ownership to ensure safety is really a form of vigilantism.
Michael Boylan, professor and chairperson of philosophy at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., was a fellow at The Center for American Progress in Washington, from 2007 to 2009. His most recent book is “Morality and Global Justice: Justifications and Applications” (2011).

How many nukes does it take to be safe?
12/17/12 Walter Pincus, http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/how-many-nukes-doe...
We are rightly mourning the horrific killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn. and discussing the threats posed by semiautomatic rifles...A new Presidential Policy Directive (PPD) is due to be presented to the military shortly, in which Obama will set nuclear force planning for the rest of his administration...the US is moving ahead...with no serious public discussion ...on a plan to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on....modernization of its nuclear weapons complex, and development of a new generation of delivery systems — new strategic submarines, bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles that will be operating more than 50 years from now. Start with the Navy’s plan for 12 new SSBN-X strategic submarines to replace the 14 Ohio-class subs now in service. A Congressional Research Service (CRS) report on the program, released Dec. 10, asks whether the Navy can stay within the cost targets for their procurement ($4.9 billion each) and whether each sub should carry 16 or 20 missiles...at least four or five warheads on each of the 16 ICBMs carried on each of the new subs. Their destructive power will be eight to more than 20 times the atomic bomb that all but destroyed Hiroshima in 1945...its 12.5 kiloton explosive power [equal to 12,500 tons of TNT], its heat effects and radiationkilled 45,000 men, women and children instantly. Another 19,000 died in the next four months, according to the study by1946 the Manhattan Engineer District, which built the bomb. Today’s nuclear weapons are 100 kilotons and above...By the end of the decade, the deployed U.S. force may be 400 single-warhead, land-based ICBMs; 240 submarine-launched ballistic missiles with three to five warheads each; and 60 strategic bombers, which each count for only one warhead though they carry more than one bomb. Beyond that, there are to be some 1,600 stockpiled warheads or bombs...Why do we need that size of a nuclear arsenal for the next 50 years?...
