8/30 US Proxy Provides "Proof" Isolated US Needs on the Road to Tehran

DAMASCUS IS THE ROAD TO IRAN
The CIA, Qatar, and the creation of Jabhat al Nusra,
5/17/13, Phil Greaves, http://notthemsmdotcom.wordpress.com
.A fully fledged, malleable proxy promoting subversion, sectarian division, and chaos to gain the US objective of the destruction of the Syrian state, removing a key ally of Iran and resistance to western hegemony in the Middle East. When extremism and brutality are too exposed to allow overt support, US designates them “terrorists”, then a change of clothes, they become the “FSA”.

US has basically licensed all Syrian armed groups to engage in war crimes...all an armed group has to do... is fly the flag of al Nusrah. That is all it takes. So an armed group belonging to the Free Syrian Army umbrella can engage in war crime, then next day issue a condemnation. It is an unlimited license for war crimes."

May 15, 2013, Hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, http://blogs.cfr.org/zenko/2013/05/17/you-might-have-missed-congress-cia...
...If Iran made a decision to acquire a nuclear weapon and they have not yet made that decision,..it would be part of a broader projection of power and assertion of Iranian authority and point of view, not only in Iran but in the region, and ultimately in the world....we believe the sanctions and pain being put on the Iranian regime is having an effect, perhaps not yet enough to change the calculus of the supreme leader, but on its way potentially to doing so… the fall of the Assad regime will have a profound impact. It will either make them feel more or less secure....think you are quite right that they will look for a way to maintain a presence even after Assad falls, because Assad will most decidedly fall at some point in this process. And they will look for a way to recover, because they need that position in the region. I think there are other actions that could be taken and other agreements made...an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority for peace in the Middle East may change the calculus of many players in the world; where we are in Afghanistan. What happens to DPRK’s program is watched by Iran.

Israeli intelligence ties Syrian gas attack to Assad

Israeli intelligence tied the recent gas attack against Syrian rebels to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, the German publication FOCUS magazine reports 24 August 2013
“According to the findings of Israeli intelligence, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is responsible for the gas attack in Damascus,” reports the publication.According to FOCUS, the Israel Defense Forces Unit 8200, the IDF’s signals intelligence unit, intercepted communications of the Syrian army during the attack.“A former Mossad officer told FOCUS the analysis has clearly shown that the bombardment with poison gas missiles was made by Syrian government forces,” reports the publication. As of 2010, Unit 8200 was estimated to be the largest unit in the IDF.U.S. Naval War College Professor John Schindler tweeted the story, adding that Israel shared the information with the U.S. and other allies. Clear inference is Unit 8200 SIGINT findings re: Assad regime & chem attack were quickly shared with USG and close allies, including Germany....

One crucial piece of the emerging case came from Israeli spy services, which provided the Central Intelligence Agency with intelligence from inside an elite special Syrian unit that oversees Mr. Assad's chemical weapons, Arab diplomats said. In a CNN interview recorded Thursday, Mr. Obama highlighted the dangers of intervening with force in Syria without U.N. Security Council approval. By Saturday night, the administration set a different course, if the U.S. chose to strike, it would do so with allies and without the U.N., to sidestep expected Russian and Chinese vetos. For a White House that has tried to differentiate itself from its predecessor's war in Iraq, the bar for using intelligence to justify a military operation is high... US officials said Mr. Kerry told Mr. Moallem that rebel forces could ensure the safety of the U.N. investigators... That day, U.N. Intercepted Calls Prove Syrian Army Used Nerve Gas, U.S. Spies Say
8/27 http://thecable.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/08/27/exclusive_us_spies_sa...
...In the days after the attacks, there was a great deal of public discussion about which side in Syria's horrific civil war actually launched the strike. Allies of the Assad regime, like Iran and Russia, pointed the finger at the opposition. The intercepted communications told a different story -- one in which the Syrian government was clearly to blame...US intelligence analysts are certain chemical weapons were used on Aug. 21 - the captured phone calls, combined with local doctors' accounts and video documentation - are considered proof positive. That is why the U.S. government, from the president on down, has been unequivocal in its declarations that the Syrian military gassed thousands of civilians in the East Ghouta region. ...ongoing debate within the Obama administration about whether to strike Assad immediately - or whether to allow UN inspectors to try and collect proof before the bombing begins. Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney called that team's work "redundant ... because it is clearly established already that chemical weapons have been used on a significant scale."...there were questions about whether or not a chemical agent was to blame for the massacre. But when weapons experts and U.S. intelligence analysts began reviewing the dozens of activist videos and pictures allegedly taken from the scene of the attacks, they quickly concluded a nerve gas, such as sarin, had been used there...

Israeli intelligence seen as central to US case against Syria
8/27/13 The Times of Israel, http://www.timesofisrael.com/israeli-intelligence-seen-as-central-to-us-...
While Israel will almost certainly take no direct part in a military strike, Israeli intelligence information is widely believed to have played a central role in enabling the US’s adamant conviction that Assad’s regime fired chemical weapons at civilians outside Damascus last Wednesday, killing hundreds of people and wounding over a thousand, according to Syrian rebel groups.A large delegation of senior Israeli security officials is currently in Washington holding talks with top administration officials led by US National Security Adviser Susan Rice.In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held his second meeting in two days with his security cabinet to discuss the Syria crisis on Tuesday afternoon.“The State of Israel is ready for any scenario”...
The Israeli team in Washington, headed by Netanyahu’s outgoing National Security Adviser Yaakov Amidror, includes senior Defense Ministry official Maj.-Gen. (Res) Amos Gilad, head of the IDF’s Planning Directorate Nimrod Sheffer, and head of the IDF’s Military Intelligence Research Branch Gen. Itai Brun. It was Brun, the IDF’s top intelligence analyst, who in April shocked the international community by declaring the army was quite certain Assad used chemical weapons against rebel forces in Syria in March.
This time again, Israeli military intelligence has reportedly played a key role providing evidence of Assad’s chemical weapons use. Friday, Israel’s Channel 2 reported the weapons were fired by the 155th Brigade of the 4th Armored Division of the Syrian Army, under the command of the Syrian president’s brother, Maher Assad. The nerve gas shells were fired from a military base in a mountain range to the west of Damascus, the TV report said. The report did not state the source of its information. But subsequently, Germany’s Focus magazine reported that an IDF intelligence unit was listening in on senior Syrian officials when they discussed the chemical attack. According to the Focus report Saturday, a squad specializing in wire-tapping within the IDF’s prestigious 8200 intelligence unit intercepted a conversation between high-ranking regime officials regarding the use of chemical agents at the time of the attack. The report, which cited an ex-Mossad official who insisted on remaining anonymous, said the intercepted conversation proved that Assad’s regime was responsible for the use of nonconventional weapons.Giora Inbar, the former head of the IDF’s liaison unit in southern Lebanon, said Tuesday Israeli military intelligence made a priority of intelligence-gathering in Syria, was very well-informed, and was widely trusted. The United States was “aware of” Israel’s intelligence on the doings of the Syrian regime, he said in a Channel 2 interview, “and relies upon it.” On Tuesday The New York Times quoted an Israeli official ...

State Dept Admits It Doesn't Know Who Ordered Syria Chemical Strike

Given that U.N. inspectors with a mandate to investigate chemical weapons use were on the ground when the attack happened, the decision to deploy what appears to have been a nerve agent in a suburb east of Damascus has puzzled many observers. Why would Syria do such a thing when it is fully aware that the mass use of chemical weapons is the one thing that might require the United States to take military action against it? That's a question U.S. intelligence analysts are puzzling over...

Fallujah babies: Under a new kind of siege
1/6/12 by Dahr Jamall, http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2012/01/2012126394859797.html
Not only did the US aid use of chemical weapons by the former Iraqi government, it also used chemical weapons on a large scale during its 1991 and 2003 invasions of Iraq, in the form of depleted-uranium (DU) ammunition and white phosphorous. Doctors and residents blame US weapons for catastrophic levels of birth defects in Fallujah's newborns... thousands of instances of birth defects, cancer and other diseases - "large-scale public health disaster" and the "highest rate of genetic damage in any population ever studied" - suffered by Iraqis in Fallujah and other areas of the country subjected to frequent and intense attacks by US and allied occupation forces. Dr Samira Alani, a paediatric specialist at Fallujah General Hospital, has taken special interest investigating the explosion of congenital abnormalities in the wake of the US sieges since 2005.."There are not even medical terms to describe some of these conditions because we've never seen them until now...so all I can do is describe the physical effects... of photos of babies born with cleft palates, elongated heads, a baby born with one eye in the centre of its face, overgrown limbs, short limbs, and malformed ears, noses and spines, one looked like a fish....cases of "thanatophoric dysplasia", an abnormality in bones and the thoracic cage "renders the newborn incompatible with life".In April 2011, Iraqi lawmakers debated whether US chemical attacks on the city constituted genocide. Resolutions that called for international prosecution went nowhere.

Kerry Makes Case For Syria Military Action
"Some things we do know, we can't talk about publicly."
August 30, 2013
U.N. investigation will not affirm who used these chemical weapons. That is not the mandate of the U.N. investigation. They will only affirm whether such weapons were used. By the definition the U.N. can’t tell us anything we haven’t shared with you this afternoon or that we don’t already know....this morning's release of our government's unclassified estimate of what took place in Syria is important. Its findings are as clear as they are compelling...But in order to protect sources and methods...some things we do know, we can't talk about publicly...in all of these things we know -- all of them -- the American intelligence community has high confidence, high confidence. This is common sense. This is evidence. These are facts. So the primary question is really no longer, what do we know. The question is, what are we -- we collectively -- what are we in the world gonna do about it.... it matters deeply to the credibility and the interests of the United States of America and our allies.... because a lot of other countries, whose policy has challenged international norms, are watching. They are watching. They want to see whether the United States and our friends mean what we say. It is directly related to our credibility and whether countries still believe the United States when it says something. They are watching to see if Syria can get away with it, because then maybe they too can put the world at greater risk...what we choose to do or not do matters in real ways to our own security.. if we choose to live in the world where a thug and a murderer like Bashar al-Assad can gas thousands of his own people with impunity, even after the United States and our allies said no, then the world does nothing about it, there will be no end to the test of our resolve and the dangers that will flow from those others who believe that they can do as they will... beyond Syria’s borders... Our concern with the cause of the defenseless people of Syria is about choices that will directly affect our role in the world and our interests in the world.

Secretary Colin L. Powell, Remarks To The United Nations Security Council
February 5, 200
Just a few weeks ago we intercepted communications between two commanders in Iraq's Second Republican Guard Corps. One commander is giving an instruction to the other.. he wants to make sure the other guy hears clearly to the point of repeating it so it gets written down and completely understood. Listen. Why does he repeat it that way? Why is he so forceful making sure this is understood? And why did he focus on wireless instructions? Because the senior officer is concerned that somebody might be listening. Well, somebody was. "Nerve agents." "Stop talking about it." "They are listening to us" "Don't give any evidence that we have these horrible agents." But we know that they do and this kind of conversation confirms it....The gravity of this moment is matched by the gravity of the threat that Iraq's weapons of mass destruction pose to the world. Let me now turn to those deadly weapons programs and describe why they are real and present dangers to the region and to the world... Less than a teaspoon of dry anthrax, a little bit -- about this amount (holds up a vial)...
People will continue to debate this issue, but there is no doubt in my mind. These illicit procurement efforts show that Saddam Hussein is very much focused on putting in place the key missing piece from his nuclear weapons program, the ability to produce fissile material. He also has been busy trying to maintain the other key parts of his nuclear program, particularly his cadre of key nuclear scientists.. his "nuclear mujaheddin."...Let me talk now about the systems Iraq is developing to deliver its weapons of mass destruction, in particular Iraq's ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs...
Iraq and terrorism go back decades....trains Palestine Liberation Front...uses the Arab Liberation Front to funnel money to families of Palestinian bombers to prolong the Intifadah...But what I want to bring to your attention today is the potentially much more sinister nexus between Iraq and the al-Qaida terrorist network, a nexus that combines classic terrorist organizations and modern methods of murder. Iraq today harbors a deadly terrorist network headed by *Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, associate and collaborator of Usama bin Laden and his al-Qaida lieutenants...Zarqawi, a Palestinian born in Jordan, fought in the Afghan war more than a decade ago (under US/Carter/Brzezinski formed, trained and armed mujahadine to defeat Soviet Union, then US #1 enemy)
Zarqawi's terrorism is not confined to the Middle East..his network has plotted terrorist actions against countries including France, Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany..also active in Georgia, and Chechnya. The plotting to which they are linked is not mere chatter....Saddam was a supporter of terrorism long before these terrorist networks had a name, and this support continues. The nexus of poisons and terror is new. The nexus of Iraq and terror is old. The combination is lethal. With this track record, Iraqi denials of supporting terrorism take their place alongside the other Iraqi denials of weapons of mass destruction. It is all a web of lies.... a regime that harbors ambitions for regional domination, hides weapons of mass destruction, and provides haven and active support for terrorists, we are not confronting the past; we are confronting the present. And unless we act, we are confronting an even more frightening future...We must not shrink from whatever is ahead of us. We must not fail in our duty and our responsibility...
