Heartbleed is about to get worse, and will slow the Internet to a crawl
4/14/14 http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2014/04/14/heartbleed-...
Last Friday, CloudFlare web service issued an open challenge to hackers to see if Heartbleed could be used to do something really dangerous — steal the security certificates that prove Google, for instance, is really Google....what was thought to be impossible turns out to be doable... Changing passwords will not protect you if you unwittingly give them to a hacker pretending to be your ISP mail provider...many Web sites raced to update their systems... fixes plugged the immediate hole... But in light of this latest discovery, many sites still appear to be vulnerable; attackers may have used Heartbleed to steal sites' valid security keys before it patched its systems...The next step, experts say, is for all 500,000 affected sites — from mom-and-pop to big conglomerates — to revoke their security certificates and issue new ones. But as necessary as that process is, it could have dramatic consequences for Web users’ everyday experiences....the good news is that many of the most critical Web sites — banks and government — were not vulnerable to Heartbleed in the first place, so they will not have to reissue their certificates

U.S. Launches Spy Operation Using Fake Online Identities
3/17/11 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/17/online-persona-management_n_837...
US Military purchased software designed to create and control false online personas to use on social media and other websites to counter anti-U.S. messaging. According to the contract between US Central Command (Centcom) and California company *Ntrepid, the software would let each user control 10 personas, each "replete with background, history, supporting details, and cyber presences technically, culturally and geographically consistent.".. be able to make personas "appear to originate in nearly any part of the world" and interact through "conventional online services and social media platforms," while using a static IP address for each persona to maintain a consistent online identity. These "sock puppets", would seem like real people entering online discussion through blogs, message boards, chats, and more. With a false persona, a user could discredit opponents, or create the semblance of consensus.

Facebook, Google, Drones and the NSA
http://columbusfreepress.com/article/facebook-google-drones-and-nsa
While Facebook drones provide social networking and connectivity to the developing world they will also provide a backdoor to the NSA. The NSA has recently been castigated for the wholesale collection of internet traffic through direct access to the internet backbone in the United States and its allies. Now publicly exposed, controversial and expensive, wholesale collection in the developing world can be a more easily kept secret.
The worlds largest spy satellite, USA-232, is hovering over Sumatra in geostationary orbit. A companion satellite, USA-202, is in a geostationary orbit over a point just off the Southern coast of Somalia. Both satellites are the latest iteration of the Orion class of spy satellites, known under the code name MENTOR. The exact capabilities, specifications and even manufacturers of these satellites is highly classified. They are part of a program called Integrated Overhead Sigint Architecture (IOSA), codenamed INTRUDER, which seeks to combine two of the functions of signals intelligence (sigint), Electronic Signals Intelligence (Elint, intelligence about the characteristics of radar and other tracking systems) and Communications Intelligence (Comint), into a single satellite system. The INTRUDER program's satellites are well placed to intercept all internet traffic between Facebook's drones and their subscribers, the drones and one another, and the drones and base stations or communication satellites. From the two positions they are in, the satellites can slurp up nearly all the traffic in Africa, the Middle East, the Indian sub-continent, Southern China, Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Australia. Facebook's drones can provide most of the global South with a level of surveillance that first world nations have come to expect and our governments hope to force us to accept.
Google's Project Loon plan for connectivity in the rural developing world relies on high altitude balloons rather than solar-powered aircraft...has been tested in New Zealand and plans to incorporate parts of Australia, Argentina and Chile when next expanded....The current string is perfectly situated to be overheard from one of the largest listening posts in the world at Pine Gap Australia. The facility is operated jointly by the NSA and Australian defense ministry is also used to connect to spy satellites in geostationary orbit, including the new flagships of the INTRUDER program. Between Facebook and Google, internet connectivity without permanent infrastructure can be provided to a large part of the Earth's surface without reasonable expectation of privacy.
Ascenta, Facebook's newly purchased drone manufacturer is no stranger to the defense and intelligence community...recently with a hospitality suite at the 2013 Special Operations Forces Industry conference in Tampa in close proximity to MacDill Air Force Base... headquarters of both US CENTCOM and US Special Operations Command...
Like Ascenta, which originally marketed its high altitude drones for surveillance, Google's Project Loon contractor for its balloons, Raven Aerostar... produces surveillance balloons for use by the US military in Afghanistan...for border/port security, reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, surveillance and other military applications according to the company's website....
Under the pretext of providing internet access to the developing world, Facebook and Google... provide the US security state military and intelligence access...acting through this access, it is better positioned to thwart attempts by people in the developing world to seize and demand access to basic human rights.

Zuckerberg Announces Facebook Drones
http://nypost.com/2014/03/27/facebook-drones-lasers-to-bring-internet-ev...
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said it is hiring “key members of the team” from Ascenta, a U.K. company whose founders created early versions of the world’s longest-flying solar powered drone. Zuckerberg also unveiled the Facebook Connectivity Lab. The operation will employ Ascenta as well as hires from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and *Ames Research Center.
The Lab’s goal is to bolster Internet.org, the Facebook project to connect the more than 70 percent of the world’s 7 billion people not yet online....The announcement comes days after Facebook announced a $2 billion deal to buy virtual reality startup Oculus maker of Virtual Reality goggles...Zuckerberg said the startup will continue to focus on gaming technology for the near-term, but“gaming is just the start.”..Facebook hopes to help it quickly move toward practical applications such as shopping, visiting a doctor or friends.“Imagine enjoying court-side seats at a game … or going shopping in a virtual store … just by putting on goggles in your own home,” Zuckerberg said. The $2 billion deal comes one month after Facebook plopped down $19 billion to buy texting application Whats-App.

Other applications may interest the NASA-Google-USRA collaboration....

Pentagon to use drones to create remote hotspots
4 April 2014 Last updated at 10:22 ET http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27019389
DARPA's move is reminiscent of Mark Zuckerberg's recent announcement he plans to connect the two-thirds of the world that has no net access, using drones, satellites and lasers... Getting access to a secure, stable and fast internet connection would be easier for remote US troops if the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) latest wi-fi hotspot programme successfully launches. DARPA completed the first of three test phases, which saw the development of key technologies to be integrated into a complete system. Dick Ridgway, DARPA programme manager said "These successes - and the novel networking approaches needed to maintain these high-capacity links - are key to providing forward deployed units with the high-capacity connectivity we enjoy over our 4G cell-phone networks."...

DARPA Creating Drone Hotspots
http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/15/5618314/darpa-creating-drone-hotspots
Google and Facebook aren't the only ones trying to beam down connectivity from the sky: DARPA...recently completed an initial testing and development phase on the program working toward of the goal creating hotspot communication speeds rival those of a 4G cell network, allowing the drones to easily extend connectivity into remote locations where the military may be otherwise unable to access intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance data. The hotspot program began back in 2012..it started phase two last month, which will begin to integrate the wireless radios onto ground vehicles. In the third and final phase the hotspots will be tested on a multiple drone network... how the hotspots are currently communicating is not stated, but in 2012 DARPA stated it expects to take advantage of commercial technologies... compatible with military protocols...

A really efficient totalitarian state would be one in which the all-powerful executive of political bosses and their army of managers control a population of slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude. To make them love it is the task assigned, in present-day totalitarian states, to ministries of propaganda, newspaper editors and schoolteachers."

Between Two Ages : America’s Role in the Technetronic Era
Zbigniew Brzezinski 1970, author of The Grand Chessboard : American Primacy and Its Geostrategic Imperatives 1971
The post-industrial society is becoming a “technetronic” society shaped culturally, psychologically, socially, and economically by the impact of technology and electronics—particularly in the area of computers and communications...Knowledge is a tool of power and the effective mobilization of talent an important way to acquire power. [5]... the United States has been most active in the promotion of a global communications system by means of satellites, and pioneering development a world-wide information grid... basis for an international educational system...In addition, it may be possible—and tempting—to exploit for strategic-political purposes the fruits of research on the brain and on human behavior. Gordon J. F. MacDonald, a geophysicist specializing in problems of warfare, has written that accurately timed, artificially excited electronic strokes “could lead to a pattern of oscillations that produce relatively high power levels over certain regions of the earth...In this way, one could develop a system that would seriously impair the brain performance of very large populations in selected regions over an extended period... No matter how deeply disturbing the thought of using the environment to manipulate behavior for national advantages to some, the technology permitting such use will very probably develop within the next few decades....The traditionally democratic American society could... become an extremely controlled society

Army information technology strategic plan
Army CIO/G-6 Campaign Plan, 2008-2015 Published October 2007
http://www.cfr.org/publication/14780/army_ciog6_campaign_plan_20082015.h...
The document's introduction states "Our Army faces an ever-changing and evolving enemy and we must be able to respond rapidly to defeat emerging threats. The current operating environment and projections of persistent conflict dictate the need to rapidly develop capabilities for both the current and future forces. Further, the rapid pace of Information Technology (IT) change will create opportunities necessitating transformation of our development and procurement process to exploit these opportunities and effectively integrate them into the force. This transformation must include the ways and means to identify and mitigate risks associated with procurement and acquisition in the global IT market space.
The Global Information Grid (GIG) is the DOD approach to information and decision superiority- a key to the National Military Strategy for continued information dominance. This decision superiority is based on shared information across the Army and with Joint, Interagency, and Multi-National coalitions and allies. LandWarNet, as the the Army's portion of the GIG, is therefore key to Army's decision superiority, described as the Army's Battle Command and GIG-derived, orders-based, capabilities focused system of systems, train as you fight, and enhanced orders process. LandWarNet enables information-based Joint, Interagency, multi-national, civil defense, war fighting and support operations, regardless of Joint Operational Phase, operational urgency, or battle space circumstances of its authorized users."
