4/27/8 Killing Hunger

Digest commentary:
Super-exploitation, savage state terrorist oppression, war, starvation, illness and genocidal slaughter is the bedrock of amerika and its bloody empire. Racism is the ideology driving and justifying its war against oppressed nations and peoples worldwide, and here in the ghettos and barrios of the beast.

So-called "developing" countries, oppressed nations, are plundered and pillaged by capitalist development, investment and "humanitarian aid". Imperialist "solutions" to the crises it creates are pretexts for intensifying and expanding capital domination. Last week it discovered a "new food crisis", caused by "high prices" calling for more "free trade" and other killer U.S.. UN, WB, IMF etc. interventions. Maximizing capital accumulation requiring the elimination of rivals and resistance is systemic necessity, not electoral policy, necessary and relentless because capital is insatiable, it must expand ... or die. Dehumanizing and eradicating "collateral", billions of "unproductive" "surplus" human beings is the part of its "business model".

But in its exceptionally racist arrogance what capital's henchmen cannot deal with is the subversive, revolutionary potential of the debasement and impoverishment it creates...the fact that capitalism ultimately produces its own gravediggers as Marx put it.

“The fact that an act is undertaken to prevent a threatened terrorist attack, rather than for the purpose of humiliation or abuse, would be relevant to a reasonable observer in measuring the outrageousness of the act ...
“to rise to the level of an outrage” and thus be prohibited under the Geneva Conventions, conduct “must be so deplorable that the reasonable observer would recognize it as something that should be universally condemned”

HUNGER & DEATH In the bloodsuckers own words...
"...depopulation should be the highest priority of U.S. foreign policy towards the Third World."
Henry Kissinger, National Security Memo 200, dated April 24, 1974

“…There are only two possible ways in which a world of 10 billion people can be averted. Either the current birth rates must come down more quickly. Or the current death rates must go up. There is no other way. There are, of course, many ways in which the death rates can go up. In a thermonuclear age, war can accomplish it very quickly and decisively. Famine and disease are nature’s ancient checks on population growth, and neither one has disappeared from the scene …
To put it simply: Excessive population growth is the greatest single obstacle to the economic and social advancement of most of the societies in the developing world.”
Speech to the Club of Rome by Robert McNamara, Oct. 2, 1979

“Overpopulation and rapid demographic growth of Mexico is already today one of the major threats to the national security of the United States. Unless the U.S.-Mexico border is sealed, we will be up to our necks in Mexicans for whom we cannot find jobs.”

A New Deal for Global Food Policy: We can ease the burden of high food prices on the most vulnerable people
Robert B. Zoellick, president of the World Bank

The Lords of Capital Decree Mass Death by Starvation
Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
Having crushed the planet's peasants and converted food into just another commodity for global manipulation, the Lord's of Capital have unleashed upon humanity the threat - no, certainty - of mass starvation. The criminal mega-enterprise is centered in the United States, the former "breadbasket of the planet" whose massive conversion to biofuels has caused staple crop prices to skyrocket beyond the reach of hundreds of millions of the world's poor. The death of millions translates into profits in the trillions for the Lords of Capital, killers on a mass scale whose only talents lie in "the production of overlapping calamities, each more lethal than the last." http://www.blackagendareport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&...

...the challenge of the food crisis affords a win-win opportunity: to collectively agree to policies that promote trade and efficiency while also boosting agricultural production and reducing the vulnerability of the poorest around the world. The challenge for world leaders is to seize that opportunity.

How Hunger Could Topple Regimes
Robert Zoellick noted last week that world food prices had risen 80% over the past three years, and warned that at least 33 countries face social unrest as a result.... the growing army of the hungry, brittle regimes around the world have plenty of reason for anxiety....hunger has historically been an instigator of revolutions and civil wars, it is not a sufficient condition for such violence. For a mass outpouring of rage spurred by hunger to translate into a credible challenge to an established order requires an organized political leadership ready to harness that anger against the state. It may not be all that surprising, then, that Haiti has been one of the major flashpoints of the new wave of hunger-generated political crises; the outpouring of rage there has been channeled into preexisting furrows of political discontent. And that's why there may be greater reason for concern in Egypt, where the bread crisis comes on top of a mounting challenge to the regime's legitimacy by a range of opposition groups. http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20080414/wl_time/howhungercouldtoppleregime...

China the culprit of course...
"Millions of people are becoming wealthy, and when 100 million Chinese start drinking milk then that's going to have an impact on food prices...Those rising global food prices have nothing to do biofuels.''
Merkel said today in Freiberg, eastern Germany, during a visit to a biofuel plant run by Choren Industries GmbH.

We can ease the burden of high food prices on the most vulnerable people
Robert B. Zoellick, president of the World Bank Group, Soundoff guest columnist:
A New Deal for Global Food Policy, which should focus not only on hunger and malnutrition, access to food and its supply but also the interconnections with energy, yields, climate change and the marginalization of women.... Since 2005, the prices of staple foods have jumped 80 percent. Painful as the price increases are to the U.S. consumer, they strike an even more devastating blow to the world's poorest people -- children, as young as 4 or 5, forced to flee the safety of their rural communities to fight for food in teeming cities; mothers deprived of nutrition for healthy babies. For those families, food comprises from half to three-quarters of consumption; there is no margin for survival.
To help those who will be hit the hardest, the World Bank Group is calling for a New Deal for Global Food Policy. This New Deal should focus not only on hunger and malnutrition, access to food and its supply, but also the interconnections with energy, yields, climate change, investment, the marginalization of women and others, and economic resiliency and growth...
We will work with countries, especially in Africa, and partner institutions, to seize an opportunity from the higher demand for food. We can help create a "Green Revolution" for sub-Saharan Africa by assisting countries to boost productivity throughout the agricultural value chain and help small-holder farmers to break the cycle of poverty. We will almost double our own lending for agriculture in Africa, from $450 million to $800 million, and can help countries and farmers manage systemic risks such as drought. We can offer access to technology and science to boost yields. Through the International Finance Corporation, the World Bank's private sector arm, we will scale up investment and advisory support to agribusiness operations in Africa and elsewhere.
To be most successful, we will need to integrate and mobilize a diverse range of partners including the Gates Foundation, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Program, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development; other Multilateral Development Banks; agricultural research institutes; developing countries with great agricultural experience; and the private sector.

We have to put a stop to this," ... one day starving people could rise up against their persecutors. The New Face Of Hunger UN Cuts Childrens' Meals
By Jeremy Lovell in London
A "SILENT tsunami" unleashed by costlier food is threatening 100 million people, the United Nations has warned, revealing that its World Food Program has begun cutting the provision of school meals to some of the world's poorest children as the global food-price crisis worsens... Riots in poor Asian and African countries have followed steep rises in food prices caused by many factors: rising demand from consumers in developing countries such as China and India, the effect of climate change on food production, dearer fuel and the conversion of land to grow crops for biofuel....A program providing meals for 450,000 Cambodian children has been suspended and Ms Sheeran said a similar program in Kenya, serving 1.2 million children, was facing cuts of nearly 50per cent. "the world has been consuming more than it has been producing for the past three years, so stocks have been drawn down"

"solution", more U.S.plunder ...
It's not the price that causes hunger
By Robert Paarlberg
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
International prices of rice, wheat and corn have risen sharply, setting off violent urban protests in roughly a dozen countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. But is this a "world food crisis? It is certainly a troubling instance of price instability in international commodity markets, leading to social unrest among urban food-buyers. But we must be careful not to equate high crop prices with hunger around the world. Most of the world's hungry people do not use international food markets, and most of those who use these markets are not hungry....
Data on the actual incidence of malnutrition reveal that the regions of the world where people are most hungry, in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, are those that depend least on imports from the world market. Hunger is caused in these countries not by high international food prices, but by local conditions, especially rural poverty linked to low productivity in farming.
The long-term solution to such problems is not lower international prices or more food aid, but larger investments in the productivity of farmers in Africa. African governments essentially stopped making these investments 25 years ago, when the international donor community pulled back from supporting agricultural modernization in the developing world. Over the past two decades the U.S. Agency for International Development has cut its support for agricultural science in Africa by 75 percent. World Bank lending for agriculture has dropped from 30 percent of bank lending in 1978 to just 8 percent. In 2005, the World Bank president at the time, Paul Wolfowitz, told a business forum: "My institution has largely gotten out of the business of agriculture." This may be changing, and if high world food prices help speed the change, so much the better. In a recent interview, the new World Bank president, Robert Zoellick, said he planned to raise agricultural lending to Africa next year from $450 million to $800 million. Since 2006, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has also begun to focus more of its grant-making on the needs of poor smallholder farmers in Africa through an Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) chaired by Kofi Annan. These are encouraging initiatives, because the productivity of farms in Africa - not food prices on the world market - should be the long-term focus. http://www.iht.com/bin/printfriendly.php?id=12230340

Placing the Terrorist Threat to the Food Supply in Perspective
www.stratfor.com
Since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, there have been many reports issued by various government and civilian sources warning of the possibility that terrorists could target the U.S. food supply. At the most basic level, threats to a country’s food supply can come in two general forms: attacks designed to create famine and attacks designed to directly poison people....In the end, the most probable attack against the food supply is unlikely to create a significant death toll, but the panic such an attack may evoke can cause repercussions that are far greater than the death toll itself.

Laboratories conducting research on lethal pathogens, often suitable for biological warfare, are springing up all over, according to a 2007 U.S. General Accounting Office report. Seattle already houses at least 10 such labs. The exact number is unknown because the law does not require public notice. Operated by universities, private corporations and government, those laboratories are intended to develop defenses against bioterrorism, pandemics such as a humanly transmissible avian flu, incurable diseases such as ebola and new treatments for existing diseases.... the labs, which operate almost entirely without government regulation or public oversight, already have had scores of accidents....The 2007 GAO report indicated that the public safety risk posed by the labs is growing. It further noted "these labs represent a capability that can be misused by terrorists or people with malicious intent." Clearly, continued self-regulation... is simply high-tech Russian roulette. Government Releases Images of Syrian Reactor
By DAVID E. SANGER
WASHINGTON — The Bush administration released detailed photographic images on Thursday to support its assertion that the building in Syria that Israel destroyed in an airstrike last year was a nuclear reactor constructed with years of help from North Korea. The administration said it withheld the pictures for seven months out of fear that Syria could retaliate against Israel and start a broader war in the Middle East. The photographs taken inside the reactor before it was destroyed [BY USISRAEL] in an air raid on Sept. 6 clearly show the rods that control the heat in a nuclear reactor, one of many close engineering similarities to a reactor halfway around the world where North Korea produced the fuel for its nuclear arsenal....but... two senior intelligence officials acknowledged that the evidence had left them with no more than “low confidence” that Syria was preparing to build a nuclear weapon. They said that there was no sign that Syria had built an operation to convert the spent fuel from the plant into weapons-grade plutonium...

A senior administration official, briefing reporters with the help of the two senior intelligence officials, said for the first time that the White House had extensive discussions with Israel before the airstrike in September. The official said the White House had raised the possibility of confronting Syria with a demand that it dismantle the reactor or face the possibility of an attack. But that idea apparently never gained traction with the Israelis or some in the administration, and in the end, the official said, Israel cited satellite evidence to declare that the Syrian reactor constituted “an existential threat” to Israel because it might soon be ready for operation. The senior administration official, who was a central player in Mr. Bush’s deliberations, added that Israel’s attack proceeded “without a green light from us.”

Syrian Nukes: The Phantom Menace
By John W. Farley
Are the wonderful mainstream media, who gave us Saddam's mythical Weapons of Mass Destruction, lying to us again? The answer is yes....
Joseph Cirincione, director of nuclear policy at the Center for American Progress... says there is a small Syrian nuclear research program, which has been around for 40 years and is going nowhere. "It is a basic research program built around a tiny 30 kilowatt reactor that produced a few isotopes and neutrons. It is nowhere near a program for nuclear weapons or nuclear fuel,"... Over a dozen countries have helped Syria develop its nuclear program, including Belgium, Germany, Russia, China and even the United States, by way of training of scientists... he told the BBC that "This appears to be the work of a small group of officials leaking cherry-picked, unvetted 'intelligence' to key reporters in order to promote a preexisting political agenda." The preexisting political agenda may be promoting a war with Syria and/or Iran, or torpedoing negotiations between the US and North Korea. Finally, Cirincione adds ominously "If this sounds like the run-up to the war with Iraq, then it should." http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article19807.htm

Syria Statement on US Nuclear Claim
"The government of the Syrian Arab Republic regrets and denounces the campaign of false allegations that the current United States administration continually launches against Syria claiming the presence of nuclear activity...it also stresses that this campaign aims primarily to misguide the US Congress and international public opinion in order to justify the Israeli raid in September of 2007, which the current US administration may have helped execute... obvious that this maneuver on the part of this administration comes within the framework of the North Korean nuclear negotiations. Syria calls on the US to act responsibly and desist from creating further crises in the Middle East, which already suffers from the results and repercussions of failed American policies in the region. Furthermore, the Syrian government hopes that the international community and the American public, particularly, will be more cautious and aware this time around in facing such unfounded allegations." http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article19802.htm

Soldier Sues Army, Saying His Atheism Led to Threats
Neela Banerjee
Maj. Freddy J. Welborn, began to berate Specialist Hall and another soldier about atheism, Specialist Hall wrote in a sworn statement. “People like you are not holding up the Constitution and are going against what the founding fathers, who were Christians, wanted for America!” Major Welborn said, according to the statement. Major Welborn told the soldiers he might bar them from re-enlistment and bring charges against them, according to the statement.... Last month, Specialist Hall and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, an advocacy group, filed suit in federal court in Kansas, alleging that Specialist Hall’s right to be free from state endorsement of religion under the First Amendment had been violated and that he had faced retaliation for his views. In November, he was sent home early from Iraq because of threats from fellow soldiers....
Specialist Hall said he did not advertise his atheism. But his views became apparent during his second deployment in 2006. At a Thanksgiving meal, someone at his table asked everyone to pray. Specialist Hall did not join in, explaining to a sergeant that he did not believe in God. The sergeant got angry, he said, and told him to go to another table....
After his run-in with Major Welborn, Specialist Hall did not file a complaint with the Army’s Equal Opportunity Office because, he said, he was mistrustful of his superior officers. Instead, he told leaders of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers, who put him in touch with Mr. Weinstein. In November 2007, Specialist Hall was sent home early from Iraq after being repeatedly threatened by other soldiers....Though with a different unit now at Fort Riley, Specialist Hall said the backlash continued. He has a no-contact order with a sergeant who, without provocation, threatened to “bust him in the mouth.” Another sergeant allegedly told Specialist Hall that as an atheist, he was not entitled to religious freedom because he had no religion. Civilian courts in the past have been reluctant to take on military cases, and the Justice Department has yet to respond to Specialist Hall’s lawsuit.
