4/12/8 Carrying a Torch: U.S. Keeps Up Olympic Tradition Around the World

SPORTING POLITICS

The Olympic Charter ... introduced after American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave the Black Power salute on the podium at the 1968 Games in Mexico City.... bans any kind of “demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda” in any Olympic venue or area. This includes the opening and closing ceremonies, the medal podiums and the Athletes’ Village. But there are still many grey areas and concerns among human rights campaigners that athletes’ right to free speech will be curtailed to avoid embarrassing their Chinese hosts.

digest note: the Olympics are political, a showcase for some rabid, racist unsporting nationalism, led by the U.S. Politics also drives the protests and rules regarding protests: anti-imperialist-zionist politics or reactionary like the made-in-usa anti-China campaign. The official censorship rules are led by the U.S. "Grey areas" allow them latitude to dictate what is verbotten. NO GREY AREAS RE: ANTI-U.S. PROTESTS ... EVER.
— Tommie Smith and John Carlos, gold and bronze medalists in the 200 metres, gave the Black Power salute during the American National Anthem in Mexico, 1968, to demonstrate against racial discrimination in their home country. They were expelled from the Games
— The silver medallist in the 200 metres, Peter Norman of Australia, who was white, wore an “Olympic Project for Human Rights” badge in support of Smith and Carlos’s protest. When he died, in 2006, Smith and Carlos were his lead pallbearer

4/10/8 REAL 'HOMELAND' HEROES

Remembering Paul Robeson, (1898-1976)
a Jazz & Justice Tribute by Dr. Jared Ball
Paul Robeson was the son of an escaped slave, who became an all-American athlete, and one of the first three black graduates of Columbia University Law School. After discovering that he would only be allowed to research the cases white lawyers presented, he began a career as an actor on stage and movies, a singer, and political activist. Robeson wrote and spoke more than a dozen languages fluently, and sang in ten more. While earning six and seven figures a year in the Depression as an artist, he began openly raising money for political causes, and by the late 1940s he was a full time fighter for the rights of black and all oppressed people. Robeson was severely punished for his activism, but remained defiant and unrepentant to the end of his days.

British Warn US commander is beating the drum for Iran strikes
By Damien McElroy
Foreign Affairs Correspondent
04/04/08 "The Telegraph" -- -- British officials gave warning yesterday that America's commander in Iraq will declare that Iran is waging war against the US-backed Baghdad government. A strong statement from General David Petraeus about Iran's intervention in Iraq could set the stage for a US attack on Iranian military facilities, according to a Whitehall assessment. In closely watched testimony in Washington next week, Gen Petraeus will state that the Iranian threat has risen as Tehran has supplied and directed attacks by militia fighters against the Iraqi state and its US allies.
The outbreak of Iraq's worst violence in 18 months last week with fighting in Basra and the daily bombardment of the Green Zone diplomatic enclave, demonstrated that although the Sunni Muslim insurgency is dramatically diminished, Shia forces remain in a strong position to destabilise the country.
"Petraeus is going to go very hard on Iran as the source of attacks on the American effort in Iraq," a British official said. "Iran is waging a war in Iraq. The idea that America can't fight a war on two fronts is wrong, there can be airstrikes and other moves," he said. "Petraeus has put emphasis on America having to fight the battle on behalf of Iraq. In his report he can frame it in terms of our soldiers killed and diplomats dead in attacks on the Green Zone."...

The March 20, 2008 US Declaration of War on Iran
By John McGlynn
As of Thursday, March 20 the US is at war with Iran.
...So who made it official?
A unit within the US Treasury Department, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), which issued a March 20 advisory to the world's financial institutions under the title: "Guidance to Financial Institutions on the Continuing Money Laundering Threat Involving Illicit Iranian Activity."
FinCEN, though part of the chain of command, is better known to bankers and lawyers than to students of US foreign policy. Nevertheless, when the history of this newly declared war is someday written (assuming the war is allowed to proceed) FinCEN's role will be as important as that played by US Central Command (Centcom) in directing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq....

What it really means is that the US, again through FinCEN, has declared two acts of war: one against Iran's banks and one against any financial institution anywhere in the world that tries to do business with an Iranian bank...

3/19/08 Obama's Message: Whose Cheering?

PATRIOT'S MESSAGE FOR THE "HOMELAND": HAVE HOPE & TURN THE OTHER CHEEK & HOPE...GET TOUGHER ON "TERRORISTS"

Obama's eloquent speech was just what his masters need: a Black man down with the folks, connected to Black nationalism 'transcending' a radical vision to unite all under the white supremacist american flag's expanding empire. Movingly he spoke of the effects of national oppression and its ideological engine, racism ... using historical facts to lie about the truth, the source of the horrors, to ensnare people especially Blacks and 'progressive' whites in the deadly trap of capitalist electoral politics, to misdirect them from the only real solution, systemic, revolutionary change.

Was it an accident his grievances and promises omitted particulars of the 'hope' he sells for U.S. imperialism, its genocidal genesis and history up to this moment in Iraq, Palestine, Africa, Central and Latin America? Did he forget the fascist oppression, unjust imprisonment, degradation, deprivation, criminalization and police murder called 'justifiable homicide, the state terror behind the criminal justice system, the systematic elimination of the BPP and others who dared fight for real change? The fascist witchhunt and terror against peoples of color and immigrants, especially Arabs and Muslims? The fascist Patriot Act and its endless spawns enmeshing us in total surveillance, 'intelligence' databases and state propaganda called 'news'? No, Obama did not forget. His message was a calculated effort to divide potential believers from those who dare to know they have nothing left to lose and dare to resist, dare to give their lives rather than crawl on their knees before the oppressor... the 'suspected terrorists' who stand in the way of amerika's dream.

Obama betrays everything the Black liberation and the working class struggles have fought for and stand for ... with the winning charm of the snake oil salesman.

3/17/08 Tibet Supporters Beg Bush Help for Peace and Cultural Respect Midpoint in Iraq? U.S. Military Police Tell New

Breaking news:
PROTEST today's decision by the Georgia Supreme Court to let the death sentence stand in the racist frame-up of Troy Anthony Davis which paves the way for the state of Georgia to execute another innocent man. Troy Davis was convicted of the murder of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail in 1991. No murder weapon was found and no physical evidence linked Davis to the crime. Since his conviction, seven out of nine original witnesses have either recanted or changed their testimony.

Demand the Board of Pardons and Paroles [BPP] commute this unjust death sentence:

"...Because of the Anti-Terrorism Bill, the blatant racism and bias in the U.S. Court System, I remain on death row in spite of a compelling case of my innocence. Finally I have a private law firm trying to help save my life in the court system, but it is like no one wants to admit the system made another grave mistake. Am I to be made an example of to save face? Does anyone care about my family who has been victimized by this death sentence for over 16 years? Does anyone care that my family has the fate of knowing the time and manner by which I may be killed by the state of Georgia?"

3/13/08 Two Bedrock Questions

" The propaganda system allows U.S. leadership to commit crimes without limit, with no suggestion of misbehavior or criminality; in fact, major war criminals like Henry Kissinger appear regularly on TV to comment on the crimes of their derivative butchers. "
Edward S. Herman, political economist, activist and author

One bedrock question to determine friends & enemies: whose freedom & democracy is served by the global war of terror and how?
U.S. Human Rights Report : U.S. State Department annual report on human rights conditions around the world.
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jUibE1eFMFEMsksD_GW4lps4p53AD8VBH3J80

digest commentary: The U.S., the world's worst terrorist state issued this psywar propaganda as a pretext for further aggression. All those resisting or interfering with U.S.-Israeli domination are, unsurprisingly, accused of crimes that have been the very marrow and bone of amerikan white supremacist manifest destiny from its genocidal beginning: Syria was added this year, with China, Russia, Iran, Cuba, North Korea.

Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, nations subjected to imperialist invasion, mass slaughter, torture, degradation and destruction, under U.S. proxy rule, and U.S. engineered divide -to- conquer 'sectarian warfare' denounced for human rights violations by 'insurgents' and 'extremists' is beyond hypocrisy,
it is psychological terrorism.

Sudan, Kenya and Rwanda, subject to decades of U.S. Israeli domination whose crimes against humanity dwarf its nazi friends, accuse those who rebel and fight against their oppressor as it implements AFRICOM to secure the continent for its fascist empire...in the name of 'humanitarian aid'.

In Nepal the Maoist revolutionaries who've led a decades-long heroic battle against U.S. backed terrorists are blamed for death and violence.
In Lebanon too, those resisting U.S.-israeli imperialism are accused.

3/8/8 International Womens Day Messages

The Road to Women's Liberation Runs Through the Anti-Imperialist Struggle!

In honor of the global struggle of women for equality, justice and freedom, everyday should be women's day. The struggle to gender, class and race equality has been a tortuous one, marked by victories and set-backs but consistently moving forward toward the day when women can say at last that we have achieved liberation on all fronts and all aspects of human existence. As a sister organization of GABRIELA Philippines, we abhor the fact that we commemorate International Women's Day at a time when 2,500 US troops are in the Philippines, rampaging through Palawan Island and spying on its oil reserves. We foresee the war and pillage that will accompany the theft of these resources by multinational corporations. We foresee Filipinos and Filipinas bereft of their property and means of livelihood; their environment polluted, their very lives forfeit and their children enslaved. Filipinas will end up, as they have ended up in the last 30 years, as commodity in the international labor and sex markets. All this destruction and suffering in exchange for $35 million in US aid.

We also abhor the incalculable suffering visited upon the women of the Middle East, particularly Iraq, by US imperialism. The unspeakable conditions of war and occupation in Iraq compel the country's women to endure the unendurable: death and carnage, starvation, total disruption of existence, raids, arrests, imprisonment and execution. In the desperation of their situation, some women in Iraq are forced into prostitution as a means of survival. We abhor the fact that there remain men and women unmoved by this situation who continue to collaborate with US imperialism.
