Providence Boys Volleyball Falls to Rio Hondo Prep in Three Sets
Providence boys volleyball dropped a Liberty League match to Rio Hondo Prep 25-23, 25-15, 25-22, falling to 2-2 in league play this season.
Providence boys volleyball dropped a three-set Liberty League match to Rio Hondo Prep on Friday night, falling 25-23, 25-15, 25-22 at the Fritz B. Burns Activity Center. The Pioneers came in with a scouting report. They knew what they were walking into.
Head coach Steven Tozlian said his team understood Rio Hondo brought serious offensive firepower. “Rio Hondo has a lot of fire power, so we went in knowing we had to get some blocks,” Tozlian said. “I think we did a good job getting touches and slowing down Rio’s big hitters. I want to compliment the Rio Hondo setter and their offense in general.”
Still, knowing something and stopping it are two different problems.
The Kares came in at 16-4 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Liberty League play. That record tells you everything about the gap between these two programs right now. Providence sits at 10-5 on the season and 2-2 in league, squarely in the middle of the pack.
Set one opened with Providence winning the first five points. Junior Jacob Pniowsky put down a block to push the lead to 5-0. Rio Hondo Prep answered immediately, rattling off five straight to tie it, including an ace from freshman setter William Wu. The rest of the set stayed tight. Junior Jaden Casal’s push gave Providence an 8-5 edge, and a Pniowsky spike pushed it to 11-7. A kill from freshman Joseph Sepilian made it 14-11. Junior Joshua Estrada’s ace gave Providence a 16-11 cushion and sent Rio Hondo to a timeout.
The Kares didn’t stay down. Rio Hondo Prep junior outside hitter Rainn Pollock helped swing momentum, and sophomore Nate Riley’s tapper made it 22-19 for the visitors before they closed out the set 25-23.
Set two wasn’t particularly close. Rio Hondo won it 25-15 and that margin is blunt.
Set three is the one that will stick with Providence players for a while. The Pioneers traded blows with the Kares through the early points. Pniowsky’s kill tied it at 3-3, sophomore Connor Wang’s push evened it at 5-5. Junior Daniel Reyes sliced the deficit to 8-5 with a kill, then put Providence ahead 12-11 with an ace. Pniowsky’s service winner made it 14-12 in favor of the Pioneers.
Then a mishit from sophomore Cruz Camacho handed the Kares a lead they didn’t give back. Not for long, anyway.
Reyes answered at 18-18 with a kill. Pniowsky’s kill knotted the set again at 20-20. Reyes dropped an ace to put Providence up 22-20. The crowd at the Burns Activity Center had a fourth game nearly in sight.
Pollock had other ideas. The Rio Hondo junior outside hitter scored four straight points to flip the lead from 22-20 Providence to 23-22 Rio Hondo. His spike that made it 23-22 pushed Providence to call timeout. When sophomore Jacob Pniowsky’s push hit the net, it was over. Match to the Kares.
Fifteen total points separated the two teams across all three sets. That’s not a blowout. That’s a close match that broke the wrong way at the worst possible moment for the home side.
Boys volleyball in California’s high school system is a spring sport that tends to fly under the radar compared to basketball or baseball, but matches like this one at the Burns Activity Center draw genuine crowds and produce the kind of late-set drama that reminds you why the sport has built such a loyal following in Southern California.
Pniowsky and Sepilian both played well for Providence on the night, according to reporting from MyBurbank. Pollock was the difference-maker for Rio Hondo, as he has been throughout that team’s unbeaten league run.
Providence can’t afford many more league losses if the Pioneers want to stay in contention for a postseason spot. The margin for error at 2-2 in league is thin. Tozlian’s group showed enough in set three to believe they can compete with the better teams in the Liberty League. The question now is whether they can stay disciplined through those final few points when the set is on the line.
The next match will tell us something. Friday night told us they’re close but not quite there yet.
