9/1/Ethnic Cleansing Redux: "They have a barcode bracelet--we have a list where they need to go" Obama's Black Cindarella Role

Police state terror raids against suspected convention demonstrators suppressed by DNC and mainstream media...the same ones who bombarded us daily with allegations of Chinese state repression against protesters:
Massive police raids on suspected protestors in Minneapolis
Glen Greenwald
[updated below (with video) - Update II - Update III - Update IV]

Protesters here in Minneapolis have been targeted by a series of highly intimidating, sweeping police raids across the city, involving teams of 25-30 officers in riot gear, with semi-automatic weapons drawn, entering homes of those suspected of planning protests, handcuffing and forcing them to lay on the floor, while law enforcement officers searched the homes, seizing computers, journals, and political pamphlets. Last night, members of the St. Paul police department and the Ramsey County sheriff's department handcuffed, photographed and detained dozens of people meeting at a public venue to plan a demonstration, charging them with no crime other than "fire code violations," and early this morning, the Sheriff's department sent teams of officers into at least four Minneapolis area homes where suspected protesters were staying.

ABC Reporter Arrested in Denver Taking Pictures of Senators, Big Donors on Public Sidewalk
DENVER -- Police in Denver arrested an ABC News producer today as he and a camera crew were attempting to take pictures on a public sidewalk of Democratic senators and VIP donors leaving a private meeting at the Brown Palace Hotel. Asa Eslocker was investigating the role of lobbyists and top donors at the DNC.
More Photos. Police on the scene refused to tell ABC lawyers the charges against the producer, (Click here to watch video of the arrest.)
A cigar-smoking Denver police sergeant, accompanied by a team of five other officers, first put his hands around Eslocker's neck, then twisted the producer's arm behind him to put on handcuffs. The sheriff's officer is seen telling Eslocker the sidewalk is owned by the hotel. Later ...seen pushing Eslocker off the sidewalk into oncoming traffic, forcing him to the other side of the street...two hours later when Denver police arrived to place Eslocker under arrest, apparently based on a complaint from the Brown Palace Hotel, a central location for Democratic officials.During the arrest, one of the officers can be heard saying to Eslocker, "You're lucky I didn't knock the f..k out of you. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/Conventions/story?id=5668622

"...the Army Corps of Engineers "is not nearly done with levee work that was supposed to have been done..."
31 Aug 2008 Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal warned state residents that coastal Louisiana, including low-lying New Orleans, could be under as much as 12 feet of water when Hurricane Gustav rumbles ashore on Monday, thanks in part to still inadequate levee systems. That would mean, he said, "overtopping of levees" across much of southern Louisiana, leaving areas like Plaquemines, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes inundated by the Gulf of Mexico.
Making the situation worse, he said, is that the Army Corps of Engineers "is not nearly done with levee work that was supposed to have been done. Tremendous areas are not protected.http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122021182515986733.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

floodgates have been constructed at the end of city drainage canals leading to Lake Pontchartrain... Still, there is no such arrangement on the Industrial Canal, the surge from which destroyed the still-empty Lower Ninth Ward... Maj. Timothy J. He acknowledged, however, that the defenses that the corps has been designing and putting into place to withstand what is known as 100-year flooding are under construction and are only 20 percent complete...some $2 billion has been spent so far to patch and upgrade the system, the $13 billion construction program that is designed to bring the city full protection... is not scheduled to be complete until 2011....http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/31/us/31orleans.html?_r=1&th=&oref=slogin&emc=th&pagewanted=print

martial law
Soldiers and policemen seemed omnipresent in the city's empty streets Sunday. Nearly 2,000 guardsmen based at the New Orleans Convention Center blocked streets in a two-block radius around that facility. Soldiers toting assault rifles blocked intersections with armored vehicles. On Sunday morning, patrol cars across the city guarded intersections with lights flashing to make passersby aware of their presence. The Louisiana governor said all 64 parishes had now declared a state of emergency and that 50,000 National Guard troops had been activated and are available for efforts along the coast. "There are 1,800 additional troops from other states headed to Louisiana," Jindal said. "We've requested 16,000 extra National Guard troops who will arrive in the next 24 to 48 hours for response, rescue and recovery." Jindal said several states are sending aircraft to help..."Once the curfew [from dusk to dawn] kicks in, anyone who is on the street will be arrested," Nagin said....http://www.wapt.com/news/17353364/detail.html

The Northwest Arkansas chapter of the Red Cross has already deployed about a dozen trained volunteers to Louisiana to assist with shelters and the possible recovery in that area. The organization says those workers are prepared to meet the needs of the thousands of evacuees.

Leaky New Orleans levee alarms experts
May 2008
NEW ORLEANS -- Despite more than $22 million in repairs, a levee that broke with catastrophic effect during Hurricane Katrina is leaking again because of the mushy ground on which New Orleans was built, raising serious questions about the reliability of the city's flood defenses. Outside engineering experts who have studied the project told The Associated Press that the type of seepage spotted at the 17th Street Canal in the Lakeview neighborhood afflicts other New Orleans levees, too, and could cause some of them to collapse during a storm. The Army Corps of Engineers has spent about $4 billion so far of the $14 billion set aside by Congress to repair and upgrade the metropolitan area's hundreds of miles of levees by 2011. Some outside experts said the leak could mean that billions more will be needed and that some of the work already completed may need to be redone. Seepage was reported at the 17th Street Canal before Katrina. The Army Corps denies that caused the collapse....the corps contends the floodwall flexed and finally cracked under the force of water piled against it by the storm. .... http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1110ap_new_orleans_levees.html

Officials said those whom the city and state evacuate...would not have a choice in where they went [including other states...again]...“Because they don’t have the means, they have to use my process, so they don’t have a choice,” said emergency preparedness director Jerry Sneed....

no such honest critical analyses from u.s. mainstream media
The Disneyfication of New Orleans
By Anna Hartnell
Three years after Hurricane Katrina, a more glamorous image of black America is presenting itself to the world in the person of Barack Obama. Meanwhile, in New Orleans, America's story of black urban poverty is still unfolding, largely beneath the radar of the global media.

In August and September 2005, areas like the largely black Lower Ninth ward, almost entirely invisible to the hordes of tourists who flock to New Orleans every year, attracted worldwide sympathy as the levees broke. Now they have been all but forgotten. While tourists long ago repopulated the French Quarter, 57% of New Orleans' black population – against 36% of whites – have yet to return to the city. Many never will. This is because since Katrina, developers have clubbed together with the authorities to complete New Orleans' makeover into a playground for wealthy tourists. As house prices soar and homelessness rises, the authorities are quietly doing away with the city's remaining stocks of affordable housing in moves that the UN has recently claimed constitute human rights violations. The fact that these demolitions will overwhelmingly affect black people has led some to call this ethnic cleansing.

Looking back, these developments should come as no surprise. The sympathy that met Katrina's immediate aftermath was short-lived. In August 2005 it was poor African-American residents, statistically the least likely to have the means to evacuate the stricken city, who bore the brunt of the storm damage. Viewers all round the world watched in horrified fascination as conditions in the convention centre and Superbowl deteriorated. News reports did focus on the government's apparent abandonment of its own people, but a hysterical and arguably racist undercurrent was almost compulsively drawn to rumours of rape and murder – nearly all of which turned out to be untrue.

As residents evacuated the city, and before the floodwaters had even receded, the future of New Orleans and its residents was being spoken about in no uncertain terms. "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans", declared Republican congressman Richard Baker soon after the storm. "We couldn't do it. But God did." Alphonso Jackson, the then US secretary of housing and urban development, made the racial implications of the gentrification process perfectly clear when he predicted that the reconstructed New Orleans would be a whiter city.
In the three years since, race and class stereotypes have paved the way for New Orleans' so-called "revitalisation". "We don't need soap opera-watchers right now", claimed the city council president, Oliver Thomas – perpetuating the view that New Orleans' high unemployment rate can be tracked to individual laziness as opposed to the systemic discrimination affecting most of America's inner cities. At the same time, those same forces that demonise poor and particularly black families – for their apparent "dysfunction" – are actively preventing the regrouping of some of the most close-knit black communities in the US.
The city is now in the process of phasing out the low-cost housing, public transportation system, and public health facilities that have supported the existence of low-income residents in New Orleans for decades. The US department of housing and urban development and the housing authority of New Orleans say that they wish to de-concentrate poverty in areas that were previously hotbeds for crime and drug abuse. Currently though, there are only plans to replace one-third of the units available for low-income renters. And as Audrey Stewart of the Loyola Law Clinic explains, the result is: " ... thousands and thousands of homeless people camping out, under bridges, we have folks staying with relatives and friends – I see that all over my neighbourhood, five, six, seven, eight people living in these tiny houses. We have people getting kicked out of Fema [Federal Emergency Management Agency] trailers with nowhere to go."
Many displaced New Orleans residents, black and white, are now calling for the "right of return" – and are in the process creating a dynamic grassroots movement that threatens to disrupt the relative calm that has eased the passage of the city's controversial reconstruction programme.... This time last year, Obama expressed concern that New Orleans would once again become the scene of the nation's broken promises, and told residents, "I can promise you this: I will be a president who wakes up every morning and goes to bed every night with the future of this city on my mind." He said: "... racial discord, poverty, the old divisions of black and white, rich and poor, it's time to leave that to yesterday." But as the presidential campaign intensifies, Obama is increasingly under pressure to "transcend race"....Three years on from the storm, during an election year that has focused attention on a spectacular symbol of African American success... once again, no one is looking in the direction of a black America that has experienced only the rough end of the American dream. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article20650.htm Anna Hartnell is lecturer in American literature & culture at the University of Birmingham, a.hartnell@bham.ac.uk

9/11, Katrina, and the Future of Interagency Disaster Response
Admiral Thad W. Allen, Commandant, United States Coast Guard
Foreign Policy Studies, The Brookings Institutio
A recent article on our guest speaker in U.S. News and World Report was entitled "Always Ready for the Storm," and that about says it all about Admiral Thad Allen. He is the 23rd Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, and he's going to lead us today in a discussion of disaster response interagency operations.... a discussion of what the role is for the Coast Guard in the 21st century because it's really those issues that he's touching on right now....they might involve issues of homeland defense, in other cases, disaster management, in other instances, immigration control or, in other cases, counter-narcotics operations.... Admiral Allen has first-hand experience with the challenges of interagency collaboration. In 2001, he led the Coast Guard Atlantic Area operations in response to the 9/11 attacks, and in 2005, he was the principal federal official for Hurricane Katrina response...

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff On "Confronting The Threats To Our Homeland"
April 7, 2008
Yale University
I've laid out what some of you may think is a grim scenario about what we face in the world. On the one hand, the Cold War is gone; we don't have to worry about a Soviet Union with whom we are eyeball-to-eyeball, poised with weapons of mass destruction. [OOPS] ...On the other hand, we have a much more disorderly set of threats, much more networked, much more widely distributed, much more difficult to deter and, unfortunately, much better enabled to carry out acts of violence because of what modern technology affords in terms of weapons, in terms of the ability to operate over the Internet, and in terms of the means of travel around the globe and communication around the globe, literally in real time or less...beyond immediate tactical measures that will make us better able to assure that we can regulate who exploits global tools in order to carry out acts of violence or destruction, we have to engage at the level of the ideology itself.
We have to enable those who struggle against dangerous ideologies to have a voice. We have to encourage the communities that are communities of moderation and belief in the rule of law to get out there and get into the battlefield of ideas, because if we cede the battlefield of ideas only to those who are extremists, then we are giving them the most powerful weapon to recruit the next generation of terrorists...Some of what we can do is send our people abroad, and send our aid abroad. Secretary Gates has observed that one of most powerful weapons we have in fighting against terrorism is our foreign aid. And when we go into Africa and we fight against malaria or HIV/AIDS, we're actually striking a positive blow for the kind of ideology that we believe in, in the West, which is an ideology of toleration, which is an ideology that values human life and values human freedom.

The U.S. fears the next September 11-style attack on America could be launched by Muslims from Britain or Europe who feel like "second-class citizens" alienated by a "colonial legacy", according to US Homeland Security chief. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Michael Chertoff...said the US was determined to build extra defences against so-called "clean skin" terrorists from Europe... "The fear has always been the so-called 'clean skin' --- a person whose documents are completely legitimate, are not forged." America is "unquestionably safer and more secure" than it was on September 11 2001 but there was a danger of complacency because it had not been attacked for more than five years. "Where you find some softness is in some elements of the media or in some elements of the intellectual class who convince themselves that this is our fault, or that there's an easier way to avoid the problem if we can just figure what price we have to pay. That is a plea to the sensibility of exhaustion and history has shown that's a very damaging and very destructive impulse." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1547645/Britain-%27could-stage...

Bush, Cheney Will Not Attend GOP Convention Due to Hurricane
...After a briefing Sunday from FEMA officials, Bush urged residents to heed local officials’ order to evacuate.“Do not put yourselves in harm’s way or make rescue workers take unnecessary risks...And know that the American people stand with you. We’ll face this emergency together.” Bush said he had been assured New Orleans’ levees are “stronger than they have ever been,” but there is a “serious risk of significant flooding” across the Gulf Coast, especially in that city. Bush pre-emptively declared states of emergency for Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Alabama. The declaration clears the way for federal aid to supplement state and local efforts and formalizes coordination. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and FEMA chief David Paulison visited the region to monitor developments; Chertoff was returning there Sunday.... In a telephone call to New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, Bush said he was “checking in and getting ready to go through this again with him,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. Nagin told Bush the forecast did not look good, but that he was pleased so far with the coordination with the federal government.Nagin also told Bush that residents were heeding the evacuation notice...

Racist Genocide in New Orleans Continues: "Like 911 But Add Water"
by liz burbank
[edited version, original published 9/3/05 "A Catastrophic Success": A Holocaust Shaped by Race]

Katrina was no accident, no surprise, no act of 'mother nature', the 'gods' , or the result of 'bureaucratic incompetence' and 'poor communication'. The human and environmental impact on New Orleans of a hurricane of this magnitude had been scientifically calculated. Rescue and recovery were deliberately withheld, working class Black people militarily imprisoned, forcibly dispersed and murdered by the armed state's violence.

National oppression and its ideological engine racism, are the lynchpin of u.s. capitalism, created and grown by genocide and slavery. Katrina is a major intensification of America's historical genocide, a premeditated physical and psychological attack on the Black Nation, part of a strategy to destroy its strength, pride, cultural cohesion that has led in revolutionary resistance against this system in its deepest crisis..

A renaissance of Black resistance and leadership, historically the leading edge of revolutionary resistance in the U.S., is what the postmodern slavemasters fear could derail their imperialist terror war, giving rise to a movement here in the 'homeland', in solidarity with international resistance, that could defeat its global "new world order" agenda . Thus Katrina and its brutal aftermath was engineered to serve the capitalist agenda in two interrelated ways: by uprooting, dispersing and destroying the Black Nation, while simultaneously inflaming always dependable american racism and support for the consolidation of fascist state capitalism -- under the pretext of "rescue, relief and recovery” from a "major casualty-producing event" called a “natural disaster.” [...]

Eugenics and the Nazis -- the U.S. Connection
Edwin Black
November 9, 2003
Hitler and his henchmen victimized an entire continent and exterminated millions in his quest for a so-called Master Race. But the concept of a white, blond-haired, blue-eyed master Nordic race didn't originate with Hitler. The idea was created in the United States, and cultivated in California, decades before Hitler came to power...(with) extensive financing by corporate philanthropies, specifically the Carnegie Institution, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Harriman railroad fortune... in league with some of America's most respected scientists from such prestigious universities as Stanford, Yale, Harvard and Princeton. These academicians espoused race theory and race science, and then faked and twisted data to serve eugenics' racist aims.
Stanford President David Starr Jordan originated the notion of "race and blood" in his 1902 racial epistle "Blood of a Nation," in which the university scholar declared that human qualities and conditions such as talent and poverty were passed through the blood.
In 1904, the Carnegie Institution established a laboratory complex at Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island that stockpiled millions of index cards on ordinary Americans, as researchers carefully plotted the removal of families, bloodlines and whole peoples. From Cold Spring Harbor, eugenics advocates agitated in the legislatures of America, as well as the nation's social service agencies and associations.
The Harriman railroad fortune paid local charities, such as the New York Bureau of Industries and Immigration, to seek out Jewish, Italian and other immigrants in New York and other crowded cities and subject them to deportation, confinement or forced sterilization.
The Rockefeller Foundation helped found the German eugenics program and even funded the program that Josef Mengele worked in before he went to Auschwitz. [...]

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything." --

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union.

Barack Obama and the “End” of Racism
Juan Santos
... we stay silent, as a rule, on the job. We stay silent as a rule, in the white world. Barack Obama is the living symbol of our silence. He is our silence writ large. With respect to Black interests, Obama would be a silenced Black ruler: A muzzled Black emperor. A Black man at the head of the White Amerikkkan State – one who’s unwilling to speak truth to power, but more than willing, like a Condi Rice or a Colin Powell, to become that power and to launch wars of aggression against other people of color...

And that’s the Obama equation. Keep your Black/ Brown mouth shut and you can “succeed.” And you can still feel “clean.” Here we have the real story behind Obama’s portrayal of his squeaky clean-ness. Yes, Black man, yes, Black woman, you can have power in this killer-racist system and stay “clean.” In Obama’s carefully constructed image lies a symbolic resolution of a profound inner conflict that all people of color in the US face in their daily lives.

Obama plays the role of a Black Cinderella. He does for Black folks what Cinderella does for girls. He shows that oppression and silence can be good for you – at least if you are the one the prince chooses, or if you are the one who gets to be the prince. It’s total fantasy. It’s a glass slipper that will break at the arch and be turned on us like a broken beer bottle or a jagged-edged knife; the same knife Obama has threatened to turn on the people of Iran and Pakistan...

The functioning of this new dynamic of racism is plain to see in Obama’s attitude toward the newest persecuted “Other” in U.S. society – Brown migrants. On one hand, in one of his most impressive moments, he very rightly called attacks on migrants “scapegoating” (although he failed to critique NAFTA or US Imperialism at any level.)...Even more telling is Obama’s refusal to recognize the right of Palestinians to return to the land stolen from them by Israel during the Nakba of 1948– the disaster of the birth of the Israeli regime. Obama supports and promotes the character of Israel as an exclusively Jewish state – in other words, as an Apartheid state, a Jim Crow state that not only keeps Palestinians separate, but which uses its military might to bomb them at will...

He knows how to make white Amerikkka feel good about the status quo, here and abroad.

There’s a reason for that. If he told the truth, if he stood up for justice, and on that basis, authentic healing, he couldn’t be president. Under those circumstances, if he’d attracted any measurable attention, much less the global attention he’s gained today, more likely be dead. Like King. Like Malcolm. Dead, like Steven Biko of the Black Consciousness Movement of Azania / South Africa, or Fred Hampton from Chicago...

What white Amerikkka doesn’t want to know, Obama is not about to tell them. That’s a large part of why they like him; it’s key. Whites don’t want to know, as a rule, the actual conditions of Black America...It’s not after all, that racism is over. It’s that whites imagine that they can now be at peace about it – that the race war in Amerikkka is over as a two-sided affair...In the white imagination, Barack Obama represents, not the “End of Racism” (racism has an experiential, existential meaning for only the barest sliver of the white population), but, he represents, rather, the end of the struggle to end racism.

The “End of Racism,” like the ”End of History” proclaimed by Francis Fukuyama with the fall of the Soviet Union, is meant to signify and hail the end of polarization and struggle, a final assimilative victory in which the antagonist (Communist or Black, respectively) is absorbed into the benevolent embrace of the white capitalist empire – there to disappear as a problem - even as a distinct entity.

Obama, in this context, can be viewed as a kind of Gorbachev, a figure that surrendered the sovereignty and independence of his nation, opened it to overt capitalism, collapse and chaos, and who, in the process, became the darling of the capitalist world; who became, in the West, at least, a figure representing “reconciliation and peace” – not capitulation and betrayal...

The only awareness most whites have of racism comes as a result of the immediate and very short term impact of the struggle of peoples of color upon their consciousness. The silencing of that struggle means only the end of its painful intrusion into white awareness – not the end of racism as an omnipresent, violent burden on the oppressed, not the end of racism as omnipresent oppression and degradation. As noted above, Obama has no plan, and thus, it is fair to say, no intention of ending systemic racism in the US. It’s easier to pretend for popular consumption, that it no longer exists...

It should be more than clear by now that Barack Obama will not save us. But neither is the point to expose the man as an individual, or even as a hypocrite, betrayer or oppressor. The point is to see him in context, within the limits of the system, the matrix, the cultural and political environment in which he arose and in which he operates. It’s not that Barack Obama, per se, is worthless, it’s that none of the dreams in us that he speaks to so deeply in us can be fulfilled under the system of oppression he is an expression of and that his candidacy concentrates in visible form...

Obama doesn’t represent peace – he represents an expansion of war and the power of Empire. He’s even more extreme on this than Bush himself, except in his public rhetoric. He doesn’t represent the real and legitimate needs, desires and hopes of Black people - he refuses to speak openly of the most fundamental issues affecting Black people. He doesn’t represent the “end of racism,” but the perpetuation of oppression in a new guise...

Attaining authentic freedom requires, as its barest starting point, the naming of what keeps us subjugated. What keeps us subjugated is the very system Obama wants to rule. The system, even with Barack Obama as its first Black emperor, is not our hope. It’s our enemy, the enemy of the world, and, because this system is rapidly undermining the ability of the planet to foster and sustain life, it is the enemy of all Life on Earth.

This is exactly the understanding that the Christian fascists like Weyrich and Heubeck wanted to crush out of our awareness, and the lack of such awareness is exactly what Barack Obama depends on if he is to remain a symbol of the impossible dream that the system can be something other than what it is.

1984 Jackson first run for the Democratic Nomination for president -- the 1984 campaign brought in 2 million new voters
1988 Jackson second runs for the Democratic Nomination for president.... millions more

...Our flag is red, white and blue, but our nation is a rainbow - red, yellow, brown, black and white...
We must expand our Party, heal our Party and unify our Party. That is our mission in 1984.My constituency is the desperate, the damned, the disinherited, the disrespected, and the despised. They are restless and seek relief. They've voted in record numbers....What does this large black vote mean? Why do I fight to win second primaries and fight gerrymandering and annexation and at-large elections? Why do we fight over that?
