ESSENTIAL BACKGROUND TO 911 & "WAR ON TERROR": create phony threat, implement state terror war as phony defense
Philip Zelikow, key u.s. strategic theorist & player, explains u.s. 'anti-terrorist' geopolitics for global hegemony

"its (the interrogation program begun in April - May 2002) principal priority for intelligence was not aimed at preempting another terrorist attack on the U.S. but discovering a smoking gun linking Iraq and al Qaeda"
Lawrence Wilkerson, chief of staff for then-Secretary of State Colin Powell in The Washington Note online political journal.

9/11 Commission controversy
NBC News analysis of the 9/11 Commission’s Final Report and interviews with Commission staffers and current and former U.S. intelligence officials.
January 30, 2008
By Robert Windrem and Victor Limjoco
The NBC News analysis shows that more than one quarter of all footnotes in the 9/11 Report refer to CIA interrogations of [ALLEGED] al-Qaida operatives who were subjected to the now-controversial interrogation techniques.... According to both current and former senior U.S. intelligence officials, the operatives cited by the Commission were subjected to the harshest of the CIA’s methods, the "enhanced interrogation techniques." In fact, information derived from the interrogations is central to the Report’s most critical chapters, those on the planning and execution of the attacks. The analysis also shows - and agency and commission staffers concur - there was a separate, second round of interrogations in early 2004, done specifically to answer new questions from the Commission.

"We were not aware, but we guessed, that things like that were going on," Philip Zelikow, the 9/11 Commission executive director, told NBC News. "We were wary…we tried to find different sources to enhance our credibility." ... Zelikow admits "quite a bit, if not most" of its information on the 9/11 conspiracy "did come from the interrogations."

" Zelikow picks the areas of investigation, the briefing materials, the topics for hearings, the witnesses, and the lines of questioning for witnesses. . . .In effect, he sets the agenda and runs the investigation."...
The Pentagon’s psychological operations (psy-ops) reflect the theories of former State Dept official, Philip Zelikow: that the creation and perpetuation of ‘public myths’ or ‘public presumptions’... e.g. public political consciousness ... is shaped by “searing events” which help move the public in a desired political direction.
Zelikow's self-described area of academic expertise is the creation and management of "public myths" or "public presumptions" ... at Harvard he worked with Ernest May and Richard Neustadt on the use, and misuse, of history in policymaking.... as Zelikow noted... "contemporary" history is "defined functionally by those critical people and events that go into forming the public's presumptions about its immediate past. The idea of 'public presumption'," he explained, "is akin to William McNeill's notion of 'public myth' but without the negative implication sometimes invoked by the word 'myth.' Such presumptions are beliefs (1) thought to be true (although not necessarily known to be true with certainty), and (2) shared in common within the relevant political community."...
Zelikow has also written about terrorism and national security... In the November-December 1998 issue of Foreign Affairs, he co-authored an article entitled "Catastrophic Terrorism," in which he speculated that if the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center had succeeded, "the resulting horror and chaos would have exceeded our ability to describe it. Such an act of catastrophic terrorism would be a watershed event in American history. It could involve loss of life and property unprecedented in peacetime and undermine America’s fundamental sense of security, as did the Soviet atomic bomb test in 1949. Like Pearl Harbor, the event would divide our past and future into a before and after. The United States might respond with draconian measures scaling back civil liberties, allowing wider surveillance of citizens, detention of suspects and use of deadly force. More violence could follow, either future terrorist attacks or U.S. counterattacks. Belatedly, Americans would judge their leaders negligent for not addressing terrorism more urgently." ...

Catastrophic Terrorism: Elements of a National Policy
Philip Zelikow, Project Director
An article based on this report will be published in the journal Foreign Affairs in the November/December 1998 issue.

...Foreword: Preventive Defense
Through more than four decades of Cold War, American national security strategy was difficult to implement but easy to understand. America was set on a clear course to contain Soviet expansionism anywhere in the world, all the while building a formidable arsenal of nuclear weapons to deter the Soviet Union from using military force against it or its allies. Now, with the end of the Cold War, the underlying rationale for that strategy—the threat from the Soviet Union—has disappeared. What strategy should replace it? Much depends on finding the correct answer to this question....

The result is a world today seemingly without a major threat to the United States, and the U.S. is now enjoying a period of peace and influence as never before. But while this situation is to be savored by the public, foreign policy and defense leaders should not be complacent. This period of an absence of threat challenges these leaders to find the vision and foresight to act strategically, even when events and imminent threats do not compel them to do so.

To understand the dangers and opportunities that will define our nation’s strategy in the new era, we must see the post-Cold War world the way George Marshall looked upon Europe after World War II, and return to prevention. In essence, we now have another chance to realize Marshall’s vision: a world not of threats to be deterred, but a world united in peace, freedom, and prosperity. To realize this vision, we should return to Marshall’s strategy of preventive defense.

Preventive Defense is a concept of defense strategy for the United States in the post-Cold War Era. It stresses the need to anticipate security dangers which, if mismanaged, have the potential to re-create Cold War-scale threats to U.S. interests and survival. The foci of Preventive Defense are: proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, catastrophic terrorism, "loose nukes" and other military technology from the former Soviet Union, Russia’s post-Cold War security identity, and the peaceful rise of China.

Preventive Defense is the most important mission of national security leaders and of the defense establishment. They must dedicate themselves to Preventive Defense while they deter lesser but existing threats—in Iraq and North Korea—and conduct peacekeeping and humanitarian missions—in Bosnia, Haiti, Rwanda, and so on—where aggression occurs but where American vital interests are not directly threatened.

This report is the sixth in a series of Preventive Defense Project reports on key applications of Preventive Defense. We are grateful to our colleagues in the Catastrophic Terrorism Study Group and the Visions of Governance for the Twenty-First Century for their collaboration.
This report is a product of the Catastrophic Terrorism Study Group, a nine-month long collaboration of faculty from Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and the University of Virginia. The Group involves experts on national security, terrorism, intelligence, law enforcement, constitutional law, technologies of Catastrophic Terrorism and defenses against them, and government organization and management. The Group is co-chaired by Ashton B. Carter and John M. Deutch, and the project director is Philip D. Zelikow. Organized by the Stanford-Harvard Preventive Defense Project, the work of the Study Group is part of the Kennedy School of Government’s "Visions of Governance for the Twenty-First Century" project, directed by Dean *Joseph S. Nye, Jr. and Elaine Kamarck.

Soft power alone will not resolve nuclear standoffs with Iran and North Korea, Nye admits, but it can convince other nations to isolate those countries. Soft power will also help win the war on terror, as extremist and moderate Muslims compete for the support of ordinary people, Military maneuvers in the Middle East can’t succeed without a soft-power policy that convinces Muslims to reject radical groups who encourage violence. For these reasons, “Soft power is more relevant than ever,” and Nye recommends that political leaders understand its nuances. – YaleGlobal
Think Again: Soft Power
Joseph S. Nye Jr.
Foreign Policy, 1 March 2006
Power is the ability to alter the behavior of others to get what you want. There are basically three ways to do that: coercion (sticks), payments (carrots), and attraction (soft power).

Phillip D. Zelikow...911 Myth Maker
In 1998, Zelikow wrote Catastrophic Terrorism about imagining "the transformative event" three years before 9/11. Here are Zelikow's 1998 words; Readers should imagine the possibilities for themselves, because the most serious constraint on current policy [nonaggression] is lack of imagination. An act of catastrophic terrorism that killed thousands or tens of thousands of people and/or disrupted the necessities of life for hundreds of thousands, or even millions, would be a watershed event in America's history. It could involve loss of life and property unprecedented for peacetime and undermine Americans' fundamental sense of security within their own borders in a manner akin to the 1949 Soviet atomic bomb test, or perhaps even worse. Constitutional liberties would be challenged as the United States sought to protect itself from further attacks by pressing against allowable limits in surveillance of citizens, detention of suspects, and the use of deadly force. More violence would follow, either as other terrorists seek to imitate this great "success" or as the United States strikes out at those considered responsible. Like Pearl Harbor, such an event would divide our past and future into a "before" and "after." The effort and resources we devote to averting or containing this threat now, in the "before" period, will seem woeful, even pathetic, when compared to what will happen "after." Our leaders will be judged negligent for not addressing catastrophic terrorism more urgently.

...if people see that the guy who wrote The 9/11 Commission Report got his Ph.D. in PUBLIC MYTHS and had his hand in scripting the 9/11 event itself in 1998, they might be more receptive to the idea that the official story of 9/11 should be revisited. http://www.rense.com/general78/rapestory.htm

9/11: Time for a Second Look

David Ray Griffin
Author of The New Pearl Harbor Revisited: 9/11, the Cover-Up, and the Exposé, 2008, named "Pick of the Week," by Publishers Weekly an honor bestowed on only 51 books a year.

...Most people assumed that the 9/11 Commission was run by its co-chairmen, former Republican governor Thomas Kean and former Democratic Congressman Lee Hamilton. They thought of it, therefore, as an independent, non-partisan body. But the 9/11 Commission was actually run by Philip Zelikow. He controlled the 85-person staff and was in charge of producing of The 9/11 Commission Report.... Thanks to a book about the 9/11 Commission by New York Times reporter Philip Shenon, we now know that Zelikow... before his staff had even begun its work, had already written a detailed outline of the report that would be issued, complete with "chapter headings, subheadings, and sub-subheadings" ... that Kean and Hamilton conspired with Zelikow to keep the existence of this outline a secret from the staff.... Kean and Hamilton claimed, the 9/11 Commission started with relevant facts, not with a conclusion: We were "not setting out to advocate one theory or interpretation of 9/11 versus another," they said. And yet, they admitted, Zelikow assigned "the subject of ‘al Qaeda' to [one of the staff's teams]," which was told to "tell the story of al Qaeda's most successful operation--the 9/11 attacks."...

A few years ago scientists formed the Scientific Panel for the Investigation of 9/11. Others, more recently, formed Scholars for 9/11 Truth and Justice, the main work of which has been carried out by physicists and chemists. Shortly thereafter, detractors of the Truth Movement said that, if there were any validity to these scientists' claims about the World Trade Center, they would be able to get papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Over the past year, scientists affiliated with Scholars for 9/11 Truth and Justice have published three papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The lead author of the most recent of these papers, which appeared in the Open Chemical Physics Journal, is Niels Harrit, a chemistry professor at the University of Copenhagen. These scientists, who know something about the chemical constituents of the real world, report finding many elements in World Trade Center dust that should not be there if the official theory, according to which nothing but fire and gravity brought the buildings down, were true.

A few years ago, after some physicists and chemists had joined the movement, detractors said: "They don't really count. The question of what brought down the World Trade Center buildings is a question for engineers, and your movement doesn't have any." That was true in 2005. The following year, however, architect Richard Gage formed Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, and by now over 650 licensed architects and engineers have signed its petition calling for a new investigation. These are people who know about that part of the real world that consists of steel-frame high-rise buildings, and they know that the official story--according to which fires caused the Twin Towers and Building 7 to come straight down in virtual free fall--simply cannot be true. For example, Jack Keller, emeritus professor of engineering at Utah State University, who had been given special recognition by Scientific American, has said about the collapse of Building 7: "Obviously it was the result of controlled demolition." A similar judgment has been offered by Hugo Bachmann and Jörg Schneider, two emeritus professors of structural engineering at Switzerland's Federal Institute of Technology....

The backbone of the 9/11 Truth Movement is now constituted by these professional organizations of scientists, architects, engineers, firefighters, military officers, pilots, and intelligence officers. The past year has witnessed the formation of Medical Professionals for 9/11 Truth, Lawyers for 9/11 Truth, Religious Leaders for 9/11 Truth, and, very recently, Political Leaders for 9/11 Truth, which already includes past or present members of the parliaments of Australia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Sweden, the UK, the United States, and Europe, and also a former United States governor. Accordingly, people who have thought of the movement as constituted by people who can be dismissed as conspiracy nuts, even morons and idiots, need to reevaluate--if they want their opinions to be based on the real world.

Here is the present situation--and if you are going to quote one sentence from my lecture, I would recommend this one: among independent scientists and professionals in the relevant fields who have studied the evidence, the weight of scientific and professional opinion is now overwhelmingly on the side of the 9/11 Truth Movement. Whereas well over 1,000 such people have gone on record publicly questioning the official theory, there are virtually no scientists or professionals in the relevant fields who have gone on record in support of the official story--except for people who are not independent, meaning whose livelihoods would be threatened if they refused to support the official theory. This caveat is important, because, as Sinclair Lewis famously observed: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." Except for such people, virtually everyone who has expertise in a relevant field, and who has seriously studied the evidence, rejects the official conspiracy theory. It is time, therefore, for journalists and everyone else to take a second look.[...]

911 Families: Philip Zelikow and 911 Commission
March 28, 2008
Philip Shenon's new book, The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation, serves to justify our suspicions and the concerns of the Family Steering Committee, that we attempted to publicly air during the course of the 9/11 Commission's tenure. One of the most egregious revelations put forth by Mr. Shenon is the fact that Philip Zelikow was hired as the Executive Director of the 9/11 Commission, despite his direct ties to the Bush administration. In 2000-2001 he served as a member of Condoleezza Rice's National Security Council (NSC) transition team, where he was allegedly the "architect" of the decision to demote Richard Clarke and his counter terrorism team within the NSC. Furthermore he was a member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB) from 2001-2003, where Zelikow drafted most of the 2002 "National Security Strategy of the United States," creating the pre-emptive Iraq war strategy...
According to many sources at the CIA and deep within the government, confessions extracted from individuals who are tortured are generally deemed useless. A tortured detainee will say anything in order to make the torture stop and therefore, the confession cannot be trusted... the "Pre-9/11 story" largely revolved around second- and third-hand knowledge of interrogations of tortured individuals, detainees that were being held in secret locations. How could the Commission have based their entire pre-9/11 narrative on these unreliable, torture-induced confessions?

What would we find out if a real investigation into September 11, 2001 were ever done? The bottom line is that the most deadly attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor remains dangerously unexamined. This can only be remedied with an investigation guided by the facts and conducted outside the reach of those with a vested interest in suppressing the truth.

'US special ops squad killed Benazir'
May 18, 2009 NEW YORK (Online) It was disclosed by reputed US journalist Seymour Hersh while talking to an Arab TV in an interview: Former prime minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on the orders of the special death squad formed by former US vice-president Dick Cheney, which had already killed the Lebanese Prime Minister Rafique Al Hariri and the army chief of that country..The squad was headed by General Stanley McChrystal, the newly-appointed commander of US army in Afghanistan. .Hersh said former US vice-president Cheney was the chief of the Joint Special Operation Command and he clear the way for the US by exterminating opponents through the unit and the CIA. General Stanley was the in-charge of the unit. Seymour also said that Rafiq Al Hariri and the Lebanese army chief were murdered for not safeguarding the US interests and refusing US setting up military bases in Lebanon. Ariel Sharon, the then prime minister of Israel, was also a key man in the plot.

U.S. Special Forces ‘propaganda of the dead’ to eliminate growing resistance
Obama’s Animal Farm: Bigger, Bloodier Wars Equal Peace and Justice
by James Petras / May 18th, 2009
“The Deltas are psychos…You have to be a certified psychopath to join the Delta Force…”, a US Army colonel from Fort Bragg once told me back in the 1980’s. Now President Obama has elevated the most notorious of the psychopaths, General Stanley McChrystal, to head the US and NATO military command in Afghanistan. McChrystal’s rise to leadership is marked by his central role in directing special operations teams engaged in extrajudicial assassinations, systematic torture, bombing of civilian communities and search and destroy missions. He is the very embodiment of the brutality and gore that accompanies military-driven empire building. Between September 2003 and August 2008, McChrystal directed the Pentagon’s Joint Special Operations (JSO) Command which operates special teams in overseas assassinations.

The point of the ‘Special Operations’ teams (SOT) is that they do not distinguish between civilian and military oppositions, between activists and their sympathizers and the armed resistance. The SOT specialize in establishing death squads and recruiting and training paramilitary forces to terrorize communities, neighborhoods and social movements opposing US client regimes. The SOT’s ‘counter-terrorism’ is terrorism in reverse, focusing on socio-political groups between US proxies and the armed resistance. McChrystal’s SOT targeted local and national insurgent
[e.g. resistance against u.s. and its proxy "Iraqi" govt.] leaders in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan through commando raids and air strikes. During the last 5 years of the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld period the SOT were deeply implicated in the torture of political prisoners and suspects. McChrystal was a special favorite of Rumsfeld and Cheney because he was in charge of the ‘direct action’ forces of the ‘Special Missions Units. ‘Direct Action’ operatives are the death-squads and torturers and their only engagement with the local population is to terrorize, not propagandize. They engage in ‘propaganda of the dead’, assassinating local leaders to ‘teach’ the locals to obey and submit to the occupation. Obama’s appointment of McChrystal as head reflects a grave new military escalation of his Afghanistan war in the face of the advance of the resistance throughout the country.

The deteriorating position of the US is manifest in the tightening circle around all the roads leading in and out of Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul as well as the expansion of Taliban control and influence throughout the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Obama’s inability to recruit new NATO reinforcements means that the White House’s only chance to advance its military driven empire is to escalate the number of US troops and to increase the kill ratio among any and all suspected civilians in territories controlled by the Afghan armed resistance.

The White House and the Pentagon claim that the appointment of McChrystal was due to the ‘complexities’ of the situation on the ground and the need for a ‘change in strategy’. ‘Complexity’ is a euphemism for the increased mass opposition to the US, complicating traditional carpet ‘bombing and military sweep’ operations. The new strategy practiced by McChrystal involves large scale, long term ‘special operations’ to devastate and kill the local social networks and community leaders, which provide the support system for the armed resistance.
Obama’s decision to prevent the release of scores of photographs documenting the torture of prisoners by US troops and ‘interrogators’ (especially under command of the ‘Special Forces’), is directly related to his appointment of McChrystal whose ‘SOT’ forces were highly implicated in widespread torture in Iraq. Equally important, under McChrystal’s command the DELTA, SEAL and Special Operations Teams will have a bigger role in the new ‘counter-insurgency strategy’. Obama’s claim that the publication of these photographs will adversely affect the ‘troops’ has a particular meaning: The graphic exposure of McChrystal’s modus operendi for the past 5 years under Bush will undermine his effectiveness in carrying out the same operations under Obama...

Putting McChrystal in charge of the expanded Afghanistan-Pakistan military operations means putting a notorious practitioner of military terrorism – the torture and assassination of opponents to US policy – at the center of US foreign policy. Obama’s quantitative and qualitative expansion of the US war in South Asia means massive numbers of refugees fleeing the destruction of their farms, homes and villages; tens of thousands of civilian deaths, and eradication of entire communities. All of this will be committed by the Obama Administraton in the quest to ‘empty the lake (displace entire populations) to catch the fish (armed insurgents and activists)’.... just as George Orwell described in Animal Farm: The Democratic Pigs are now pursuing the same brutal, military policies of their predecessor Republican Porkers, only now in the name of the people and peace...

"The Dead Were So Many".
The number of civilians killed by the American airstrikes in Farah Province last week may never be fully known. But villagers, including two girls recovering from burn wounds, described devastation that officials and human rights workers are calling the worst episode of civilian casualties in eight years of war in Afghanistan. The bombs were so powerful that people were ripped to shreds. Survivors said they collected only pieces of bodies. Several villagers said that they could not distinguish all of the dead and that they never found some of their relatives.

...I was genuinely enlightened to learn that "the whole purpose of current US strategy" on the Af-Pak front is to prevent nuclear war between Pakistan and India. This I did not know. I had thought...that "current US strategy" in the region was actually exacerbating extremism and violent resistance like throwing gasoline on a roaring fire, while destabilizing Pakistan to an unprecedented degree, killing civilians, cross-border strikes, blunderbuss "counterinsurgency" attacks sending hundreds of thousands of civilians fleeing for their lives... What's more, I also learned that anyone who criticizes "our policy" in Pakistan is actually aiding and abetting the "possible deaths of millions of civilians" in that apparently inevitable nuclear war between India and the "nuclear-armed Taliban" that is apparently a "certainty" if we don't follow the new Leader.... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=54328

Pakistan Is Rapidly Adding Nuclear Arms, U.S. Says
Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed the assessment of the expanded arsenal in a one-word answer to a question on Thursday in the midst of lengthy Senate testimony. Sitting beside Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, he was asked whether he had seen evidence of an increase in the size of the Pakistani nuclear arsenal.“Yes,” he said quickly, adding nothing, clearly cognizant of Pakistan’s sensitivity to any discussion about the country’s nuclear strategy or security. Inside the Obama administration, some officials say, Pakistan’s drive to spend heavily on new nuclear arms has been a source of growing concern, because the country is producing more nuclear material at a time when Washington is increasingly focused on trying to assure the security of an arsenal of 80 to 100 weapons so that they will never fall into the hands of Islamic insurgents...
President Obama has called for passage of a treaty that would stop all nations from producing more fissile material — the hardest part of making a nuclear weapon — but so far has said nothing in public about Pakistan’s activities. Bruce Riedel, the Brookings Institution scholar who served as the co-author of Mr. Obama’s review of Afghanistan-Pakistan strategy, reflected the administration’s concern in a recent interview, saying that Pakistan “has more terrorists per square mile than anyplace else on earth, and it has a nuclear weapons program that is growing faster than anyplace else on earth.”... US Nuclear Weapons Spending Topped $52 Billion in 2008: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace report
The United States has never tracked nuclear weapons-related spending comprehensively, hindering effective oversight and weighing of priorities in nuclear security policy. The lack of comprehensive accounting impairs balancing of priorities and fosters the impression that the United States is more interested in preserving and upgrading its nuclear arsenal than in reducing and eliminating threats of nuclear proliferation and limited nuclear or radiological attack. Because classified expenditures and some other relevant costs are omitted from the analysis, total actual spending is significantly higher:
Key Conclusions
* Only 1.3 percent ($700 million) of the nuclear security budget was devoted to preparing for the consequences of a nuclear or radiological attack.
* Another 56 percent of the total went toward operating, sustaining, and upgrading the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
* Nuclear security consumes $13 billion more than international diplomacy and foreign assistance; nearly double what the United States allots for general science, space, and technology; and 14 times what the Department of Energy (DOE) budgets for all energy-related research and development.
* Nuclear weapons and weapons-related programs account for at least 67 percent of DOE’s budget, 8.5 percent of the FBI’s budget, 7.1 percent of the Department of Defense budget, and 1.7 percent of the Department of Homeland Security’s budget.

As a young Israeli pupil I was taught to believe that the 'Arabs' (this is how we called them) just run for their lives. No one forced 'them’ to do so, they were just a bunch of cowards, we were told. Similarly, we were preached that they were not as attached to the land as we, the Israelis, are. While they fled for their lives without fighting back, we, the chosens, schlepped all the way back to Zion after 2000 years to reclaim 'our’ historic land. The truth of hundreds of massacres of Palestinian villagers committed by a young and well-trained enthusiastic IDF was absolutely hidden. U.S. to Increase Military & Political Aid to Israel
The U.S. budget proposed to congress for year 2010 also calls for the administration to respect Israel’s claims on Jerusalem. This contradicts international law, which does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the occupied territories of East Jerusalem. It also contradicts the Oslo Agreements, which defines all of Jerusalem as a territory to be discussed during the final stages of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. The proposed budget prohibits the establishment of new U.S. offices, departments, or agencies in East Jerusalem for conducting official government business with the Palestinian Authority. Moreover, the proposed budget stipulates that U.S .officers should not meet representatives of the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem, including its occupied areas.
No conditions regarding developments on the peace process [SIC] or recognition of an independent Palestinian State were imposed on Israel.
All assistance to the Palestinian Authority is left to the discretion of the U.S. Secretary of State (currently Hillary Clinton), who is empowered to determine and certify to Congress that the PA recognizes Israel, is prepared to fight terrorism, and is ready to end the state of war with Israel. US President Barack Obama: "I understand very clearly that Israel considers Iran an existential threat, and given some of the statements that have been made by [Iranian] President [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, you can understand why," Obama said in an interview with Newsweek, which was published on its Web site and will appear in print in the magazine's May 25 issue. With respect to concerns Israel might carry out an air strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, the US president said that since Israel is "right there in the range" of Iranian missiles, "their calculation of costs and benefits are going to be more acute."... http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1242212390277&pagename=JPost%...

The Jerusalem Post reported the US told Israeli officials to tone down rhetoric on Iran and stop ...threatening a military strike on Iranian nuclear installations, especially ahead of presidential elections on June 12th. The Obama administration, while saying it recognises a nuclear Iran poses a threat to the stability of the Middle East, still plans to offer Iranian leaders new approaches in return for freezing their nuclear program... Einstein an Opponent of the Jewish State
by Jaisal Noor / May 19th, 2009
Countless books and articles have been written about the life of the great physicist and thinker Albert Einstein ... since his death in 1955 with a near consensus that Einstein was a staunch supporter of the state of Israel. Veteran journalist Fred Jerome uses hundreds of pages of Einstein’s own letters, articles and interviews — many published for the first time — to refute this thesis...
Jerome reveals much about the nature of mainstream propaganda. Einstein’s opposition to Israel was widely known and reported on during his life. In fact, the myth of Einstein’s support of Israel was born the day after Einstein’s death in his obituary in the New York Times, which shamelessly wrote that he “championed” the establishment of the Jewish state. This contradicted decades of reporting from the “Paper of Record.” Jerome provides some examples, including a 1930 article headlined “Einstein attacks British Zion Policy,” a 1938 article stating Einstein was “Against Palestine State” and a 1946 article stating Einstein “Bars Jewish State.”

Obama's personal background used to feign basis for a 'shift' in USRAELI strategy
World Watches for U.S. Shift on Mideast
...None of this necessarily means that Mr. Obama will chart a course that is different from his predecessors’. During the campaign he struck a position on Israel that was indistinguishable from those of his rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain, going so far as to say in 2008 that he supported Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel. (He later attributed that statement to “poor phrasing in the speech,” telling Fareed Zakaria of CNN that he meant to say he did not want barbed wire running through Jerusalem.) ... “In practice, despite the hype, there is much more continuity with previous administrations,” Mr. Abunimah said. “People get carried away with the atmospheric change, but the substance of the U.S. policy towards Israel has been the same policy.” ... http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/17/us/politics/17prexy.html?th&emc=th

This colorful, laid-back country, full of ancient archaeological sites and modern military monuments, is perfect for teenagers who thrive on action and intrigue.

From an Interview with Khalida Jarrar of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)
Enrico Bartolomei for the Alternative Information Center (AIC): Do you think that the new US administration will bring any change to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?
Khalida Jarrar: Obama will not bring any substantial change...We are talking about institutional policies...Obama cannot change the system, and the contradictions are within the system itself: the capitalist economic system...that led to the military occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. Toward the Middle East and especially the Palestinian cause, they are still talking about the “peace process,” that... is not a real peace process.... Obama will not alter the system and consequently for the Palestinians, the situation will not change....

Netanyahu Meets Jordan’s King
JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel met on Thursday with King Abdullah II of Jordan, who urged him to commit to a two-state solution with the Palestinians, according to news reports. Mr. Netanyahu made the unannounced trip to Jordan hours before he was to meet with Pope Benedict XVI. Mark Regev, a spokesman for the prime minister, said that Mr. Netanyahu and King Abdullah discussed bilateral issues and the peace effort with the Palestinians. A statement issued by Jordan after the meeting and quoted by news organizations said that the king had also asked Mr. Netanyahu to accept the Arab peace initiative, which offers Israel normal ties with the Arab world in return for a full withdrawal to its pre-1967 boundaries and a solution for the Palestinian refugees of 1948. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/15/world/middleeast/15diplo.html?th&emc=t...

Doing his job: escalating, not mitigating, U.S. state terror agenda for global hegemony
Barack Obama, Murderer War Criminal-in-Chief
Arthur Silber
... certain conclusions are now inescapable, even this early in the miraculous, transcendent Age of Obama ---- to continue to believe that Barack Obama represents any kind of "improvement" over the abomination of George W. Bush is not an innocent error. To persist in delusions of this kind requires that one intentionally and deliberately blind oneself to evidence that assaults us every day... We now see unequivocally and in full, bloody daylight the nature of the "change" that Obama has brought to the operations of Empire...to expand them and make them still more murderous. But because Obama has been heralded as the exponent of "hope" and "change," and because the majority of Americans exhibit an endless capacity for crediting meaningless of slogans, many people will continue to struggle to convince themselves that somehow things might have been worse had he not been elected. How could they have been "worse" for the 140 dead Afghanis, 95 of whom were children? Are murders ordered by a Democratic president not as final as those ordered by a Republican president? And this does not even consider the murder campaign now underway in Pakistan at the instigation of the Obama administration. Throughout the interminable campaign, Obama never hid what he stood for. To the contrary, he stated his plans for more and more war repeatedly, and in detail. If you failed to grasp this fact, it can only be because you did not want to grasp it....

Obama's 'transparent' phony change-artist act, getting shattered as he does what he was hired to do, is endangering the electoral myth necessary to maintain domestic 'stability', so liberal propagandists --- minutes ago touting his 'radical rupture from all things Bush --- trying to salvage public opinion, now 'explain' why: Obama's pragmatic "New Foundation" is necessary for 'national security', Obama inherited Bush - created disasters , ad nauseam, to deny democrat complicity, that politicians are agents of a bipartisan geostrategic agenda: they do not create, but execute.
Obama After Bush: Leading by Second Thought
The president’s recent decisions on detainee abuse photos and tribunals have put him more in line with his predecessor, despite pledges of a new direction... Faced with the choice of signaling an unambiguous break with the policies of the Bush era, or maintaining some continuity with its practices, the president has begun to come down on the side of taking fewer risks with security, even though he is clearly angering the liberal elements of his political base... Perhaps it is the knowledge that lives rest on his choices, or the general sense that settles over most presidents that the world is a more complex place from the vantage point of the Oval Office than it appears from the campaign trail.
And there is an undertone of political realities at work. Mr. Obama would have had to shut off every television set in the West Wing in recent days to avoid seeing former Vice President Dick Cheney’s assaults on his national security policies. While the Cheney fusillade has left many Republicans wincing, it has reminded Democrats that they could be politically vulnerable should the United States be attacked again... The reality is that the second 100 days of this presidency are bound to be filled with course corrections. Announcing departures from the Bush-era practices was, as one of Mr. Obama’s national security aides put it recently, “grabbing the low-hanging fruit.” Writing the rules for the next four years, or eight, requires lawyers, compromises and, inevitably, disappointments for those who discover that cleanly breaking with the past always sounds more appealing than living with the consequences.

Familiar Obama Phrase Groomed as Slogan: New Foundation may not come tripping off the tongue quite as easily as New Deal, but it has become a staple of Obama’s speeches ...

Obama Can’t Turn the Page on Bush
Frank Rich, Op-Ed Columnist
To paraphrase Al Pacino in “Godfather III,” just when we thought we were out, the Bush mob keeps pulling us back in. And will keep doing so. No matter how hard President Obama tries to turn the page on the previous administration, he can’t. Until there is true transparency and true accountability, revelations of that unresolved eight-year nightmare will keep raining down drip by drip, disrupting the new administration’s high ambitions. That’s why the president’s flip-flop on the release of detainee abuse photos — whatever his motivation — is a fool’s errand ... the new administration doesn’t want to revisit this history any more than it wants to dwell on torture... taking its cues from the Reagan-Bush 41 speechwriter Peggy Noonan. “Sometimes I think just keep walking,” she said on ABC’s “This Week” as the torture memos surfaced. “Some of life has to be mysterious.” Imagine if she’d been at Nuremberg. The administration can’t “just keep walking” because it is losing control of the story. ... the Bush White House’s once-united front is starting to crack under pressure....
I’m not a fan of Washington’s blue-ribbon commissions, where political compromises can trump the truth. But the 9/11 investigation did illuminate how, a month after Bush received an intelligence brief titled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.,” 3,000 Americans were slaughtered on his and Cheney’s watch. If the Obama administration really wants to move on from the dark Bush era, it will need a new commission [see exposure of commission cover-up role above: 9/11 Commission controversy]

What is Acknowledged and What Remains Unknown: Sexual Torture
David Rosen
...The limited sources limit the public’s knowledge of the full scope of the torture committed by American intelligence agents, military officers and private contractors. Focusing on the issue of sexual torture, which includes prolonged nudity, reveals what has been made public but also what has yet to become publicly acknowledged. Failure to publicly acknowledge the full scope of sexual torture, along with all the other "harsh" interrogation techniques, creates a sanitized, "official," history. Americans will never know what torture was committed in their name, nor be able to hold accountable those who ordered and executed these actions unless they go beyond "official" sources... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=54293

New Leader of Afghan War Likes Torture
Ed Brayton
Esquire has a 2006 article about Camp Nama, a detention facility in Iraq that made Abu Ghraib look like a church social. It contains testimony from two military officers who worked at the facility until their consciences could take it no more and then blew the whistle. How bad was it? It was a point of pride that the Red Cross would never be allowed in the door, Jeff says. This is important because it defied the Geneva Conventions, which require that the Red Cross have access to military prisons. "Once, somebody brought it up with the colonel. 'Will they ever be allowed in here?' And he said absolutely not. He had this directly from General McChrystal and the Pentagon that there's no way that the Red Cross could get in -- they won't have access and they never will. This facility was completely closed off to anybody investigating, even Army investigators."... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=54291

wouldn't want to inflame anti-amerikan sentiments --- and resistance --- in the racist 'homeland'
Americans stand behind President covering up Abu Ghraib torture
The lovely "progressive" Barack Obama, is trying to (again) brush the truth about Abu Ghraib under the rug, just like George Bush did.... the world is already painfully (pun intended) aware of America's track record of torture and oppression. So Mr. Obama's trying to clumsily censor the latest set of torture photos is the proverbial "locking the barn door after the horse has left"... imagine the Premier of China, refusing to release photographs of what's going on in Tibet, on the grounds that showing these to the world would "inflame anti-Chinese sentiment", "putting Chinese forces occupying Tibet, at additional risk". change "China" to "America", "Tibet" to "Abu Ghraib"....http://abutamam.blogspot.com/2009/05/average-americans-stand-behind-their.html

deliberate, criminal suppression of evidence...
We wouldn't want to inflame anti-American sentiment
Glenn Greenwald
There are many bizarre aspects to Obama's decision to try to suppress evidence of America's detainee abuse, beginning with the newfound willingness of so many people to say: "We want our leaders to suppress information that reflects poorly on what our government does." One would think that it would be impossible to train a citizenry to be grateful to political officials for concealing evidence of government wrongdoing, or to accept the idea that evidence that reflects poorly on the conduct of political leaders should, for that reason alone, be covered-up: "Obama and his military commanders decide when it's best that we're kept in the dark, and I'm thankful when they keep from me things that reflect poorly on my government because I trust them to decide what I should and should not know." It's the fantasy of every political leader to have a citizenry willing to think that way ("I know it's totally unrealistic, but wouldn't it be great if we could actually convince people that it's for their own good when we cover-up evidence of government crimes?").

But what is ultimately even more amazing is the claim that suppressing these photographs is necessary to prevent an inflammation of anti-American sentiment in the Muslim world generally and Afghanistan specifically. That claim is coming from the same people who are doing this .(....)

We're currently occupying two Muslim countries. We're killing civilians regularly (as usual) -- with airplanes and unmanned sky robots. We're imprisoning tens of thousands of Muslims with no trial, for years. Our government continues to insist that it has the power to abduct people -- virtually all Muslim -- ship them to Bagram, put them in cages, and keep them there indefinitely with no charges of any kind. We're denying our torture victims any ability to obtain justice for what was done to them by insisting that the way we tortured them is a "state secret" and that we need to "look to the future." We provide Israel with the arms and money used to do things like devastate Gaza. Independent of whether any or all of these policies are justifiable, the extent to which those actions "inflame anti-American sentiment" is impossible to overstate. And now, the very same people who are doing all of that are claiming that they must suppress evidence of our government's abuse of detainees because to allow the evidence to be seen would "inflame anti-American sentiment." ...What do you think the impact is when we announce to the world: "What we did is so heinous that we're going to suppress the evidence?" Some Americans might be grateful to Obama for hiding evidence of what we did to detainees, but that is unlikely to be the reaction of people around the world. If we're actually worried about inflaming anti-American sentiment and endangering our troops, we might... for instance...stop invading, bombing and occupying Muslim countries and imprisoning their citizens with no charges by the thousands [...]

At Notre Dame, Obama Calls for Dialogue on Abortion
President Obama directly confronted America’s deep divide over abortion Sunday as he appealed to partisans on both sides to find ways to respect one another’s basic decency and even work together this: "heart-wrenching decision for any woman is not made casually. It has both moral and spiritual dimension. So let us work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions. Let’s reduce unintended pregnancies. Let’s make adoption more available. Let’s provide care and support for women who do carry their children to term.” .... Mr. Obama said he supported a “sensible conscience clause,” referring to legislative actions that allow doctors or other health care providers to withhold abortion or other services that conflict with their religious beliefs.... and although he endorsed abortion rights legislation during last year’s campaign, he said last month that “the Freedom of Choice Act is not my highest legislative priority.”

Uncle Sam's Human Lab Rats

Their stories are a staple of conspiracy culture: broken men, suffering hallucinations and near-total amnesia, who say they are victims of secret government mind-control experiments. Think Liev Schreiber in The Manchurian Candidate or Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory. Journalists are a favorite target for the paranoid delusions of this population... Gordon Erspamer... has filed suit against the CIA and the US Army on behalf of the Vietnam Veterans of America and six former American soldiers who claim they are... survivors of classified government tests conducted at the Army's Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland between 1950 and 1975... That government scientists conducted human experiments at Edgewood is not in question. "The program involved testing of nerve agents, nerve agent antidotes, psychochemicals, and irritants," according to a 1994 General Accounting Office (now the Government Accountability Office) report (PDF). At least 7,800 US servicemen served "as laboratory rats or guinea pigs" at Edgewood, alleges Erspamer's complaint, filed in January in a federal district court in California. The Department of Veterans Affairs has reported that military scientists tested hundreds of chemical and biological substances on them, including VX, tabun, soman, sarin, cyanide, LSD, PCP, and World War I-era blister agents like phosgene and mustard. The full scope of the tests, however, may never be known....a CIA official explained to the GAO, referring to the agency's infamous MKULTRA mind-control experiments, "The names of those involved in the tests are not available because names were not recorded or the records were subsequently destroyed." Besides, said the official, some of the tests involving LSD and other psychochemical drugs "were administered to an undetermined number of people without their knowledge." ...a 1950 Supreme Court decision, the Feres case, precludes military personnel from suing the federal government for personal injuries sustained in the line of duty. The CIA's decision to use military personnel as test subjects followed the court's decision and is an issue Erspamer plans to raise at trial. "Suddenly, they stopped using civilian subjects and said, 'Oh, we can get these military guys for free,'" he says. "The government could do whatever it wanted to them without liability. We want to bring that to the attention of the public, because I don't think most people understand that."

FBI “Going Dark.” Budget Request for High-Tech Surveillance Capabilities Soar
by Tom Burghardt / May 18th, 2009
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s budget request for Fiscal Year 2010 reveals police intend to greatly expand their high-tech surveillance capabilities. According to ABC News , the FBI is seeking additional funds for the development of “a new ‘Advanced Electronic Surveillance’ program which is being funded at $233.9 million for 2010. The program has 133 employees, 15 of whom are agents.” Known as “Going Dark,” the program is designed to beef up the Bureau’s already formidable electronic surveillance, intelligence collection and evidence gathering capabilities “as well as those of the greater Intelligence Community,” ABC reports.…An FBI spokesperson told the network:
“The term ‘Going Dark’ does not refer to a specific capability, but is a program name for the part of the FBI, Operational Technology Division’s (OTD) lawful interception program which is shared with other law enforcement agencies. The term applies to the research and development of new tools, technical support and training initiatives.” (Jason Ryan, “DOJ Budget Details High-Tech Crime Fighting Tools,” ABC News, May 9, 2009)
Led by Assistant Director Marcus C. Thomas, OTD describes the office as supporting “the FBI’s investigative and intelligence-gathering efforts–and those of our federal, state, and local law enforcement/intelligence partners–with a wide range of sophisticated technological equipment, examination tools and capabilities, training, and specialized experience. You won’t hear about our work on the evening news because of its highly sensitive nature, but you will continue to hear about the fruits of our labor…”
According to OTD’s website, the Division possesses “seven core capabilities”: Digital Forensics; Electronic Surveillance; Physical Surveillance; Special Technology and Applications; Tactical Communications; Tactical Operations and finally, Technical Support/Coordination. Under the heading “Electronic Surveillance,” OTD deploys “tools and techniques for performing lawfully-authorized intercepts of wired and wireless telecommunications and data network communications technologies; enhancing unintelligible audio; and working with the communications industry as well as regulatory and legislative bodies to ensure that our continuing ability to conduct electronic surveillance will not be impaired as technology evolves.” ...

Fiscal Suicide Ahead
By David Brooks
Barack Obama...saw that the nation faced a long-term fiscal crisis caused by rising health care and entitlement costs. His theory was that he could spend now and save later. He could fund his agenda with debt now and solve the long-term fiscal crisis by controlling health care and entitlement costs later on....In essence, health care became the bank out of which he could fund the bulk of his agenda...If he is going to sustain his agenda, if he is going to prevent national insolvency, he has to control health care costs. Health care costs are now the crucial issue of his whole presidency. Obama and his aides seem to understand this. They have gone out of their way to emphasize the importance of restraining costs. The president has held headline-grabbing summits with business and union leaders. Unlike just about every other Democrat on the planet, he emphasizes cost control as much as expanding health coverage...

House OKs $96 billion more for wars
The House passed a bill Thursday that would provide more than $96 billion for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq through Sept. as President Obama requested, but a bloc of 51 House Democrats opposed ..
Democratic opponents did not attack Obama by name, but some likened his increase of 21,000 troops and billions of dollars to the war in Afghanistan to President George W. Bush's efforts in Iraq.
"When George Bush was president, I was on this floor saying we need an exit strategy," said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass. "The same applies with Afghanistan. I'm tired of wars with no deadlines, no exits and no ends."... the vote was a rare display of bipartisanship: It marked the first time on a major bill that Obama has relied on House Republicans to make up for defections in his own party. A Discovery That Will Change Everything (!!!) ... Or Not
May 18, 2009, by Brian Switek
Ground-Breaking Global Announcement
What: An international press conference to unveil a major historic scientific find. After two years of research a team of world-renowned scientists will announce their findings, which address a long-standing scientific puzzle.
The find is lauded as the most significant scientific discovery of recent times. History brings this momentous find to America and will follow with the premiere of a major television special on Monday, May 25 at 9 pm ET/PT chronicling the discovery and investigation.
Who: Mayor Michael Bloomberg; International team of scientists who researched the find; Abbe Raven, President and CEO, A&E Television Networks; Nancy Dubuc, Executive Vice President and General Manager, History; Ellen Futter, President, American Museum of Natural History The most significant scientific discovery of recent times", eh?...
Last week periodicals like the Wall Street Journal and the Mail Online heralded the discovery of a 47-million-year old adapid primate from the famous Messel deposits in Germany. These deposits are well-known for containing exceptionally well-preserved mammals, and this particular lemur-like primate fossil contains soft tissue impressions and gut contents. An exceptionally preserved fossil primate is pretty exciting, but that's not why the publicist for tomorrow's AMNH event wrote one of the most overblown press releases I have ever seen. No, the paper, which will be released in PLoS One tomorrow, claims that this particular primate is of vital importance to the origin of anthropoid primates (or monkeys and apes, with our species being included in the latter category)....
This raises an important question about the way scientific discoveries, particularly fossil finds, are being popularized. Darwinius is just the latest is a string of significant fossils to be hyped in the media before being scientifically described (or at least before that information is released to the public). Other recent examples include "Dakota" the Edmontosaurus, the pliosaur "Predator X", and "Lyuba" the baby mammoth. ..
Companies like National Geographic and the History Channel are taking a larger role in how these discoveries are being presented. Each of the fossils I mentioned above have had books, feature articles, documentaries, or some combination thereof produced about them before any scientific description of them has been published... consider the grand claims made about finds like Darwinius. It is being heavily promoted but scientists have not yet had a chance to see the fossil or read the paper describing it.... Though heralded in documentaries and in the news as one of our direct ancestors, it is probably a very interesting lemur-like primate on a different evolutionary branch....

"Any pop band is doing the same thing."
JÖRN H. HURUM, a scientist at the University of Oslo, on the publicity blitz surrounding a 47-million-year-old fossil soon to be unveiled at the American Museum of Natural History.

Is fossil Ida a missing link in evolution?
As one of the most significant primate fossil finds ever made, Ida will be hailed by some as "the missing link" in our evolutionary history. But is that really true? Well, yes and no. The phrase usually refers to the creature that links us to the apes, in particular the common ancestor of chimpanzees and ourselves. At 47m years old, Ida – or Darwinius masillae, to use her formal name – is much more ancient than that. But she is undoubtedly a very significant link in the primate lineage and the evidence from her extraordinarily well-preserved skeleton points to her being a very early member of our own primate line. The fossil evidence of primate evolutionary history is sparsely populated – more missing than link. So almost any major primate fossil at a significant point in our ancestral line could be referred to by that over-used phrase. Also, filling the gap is not the end of the story. "Every time you find a link that once was missing, you find two more, you've created two more that are missing. So it's never going to be a complete chain," said Sir David Attenborough, who is narrating a BBC documentary on the fossil.

Jørn Hurum, at the University of Oslo, the scientist who assembled the international team of researchers to study Ida is relaxed about using the phrase. "Why not? I think we could use that phrase for this kind of specimen," he said. "[People] have a feeling that if something is important it is a missing link."

However, in the paper published in PLoS ONE from the Public Library of Science on the fossil he is more circumspect. "Darwinius masillae is important in being exceptionally well-preserved and providing a much more complete understanding of the paleobiology of an Eocene primate than was available in the past," the authors wrote. "[The species] could represent a stem group from which later anthropoid primates evolved [the line leading to humans], but we are not advocating this here."

The paper's scientific reviewers asked that they tone down their original claims that the fossil was on the human evolutionary line. One of those reviewers, Professor John Fleagle at Stony Brook University in NY state said that would be a judgment for the scientific community. "That will be sorted out or at least debated extensively in the coming years once the paper is published," ...

"Slumdog Millionaire" child star sees home razed
MUMBAI, India — The 10-year-old child star of "Slumdog Millionaire" was awakened Thursday by a policeman wielding a bamboo stick and ordered out of his home. It was bulldozed minutes later, along with dozens of other shanties in the Mumbai slum he calls home....Eight Oscars and $326 million in box-office receipts have done little to improve the lives of two of the youngest stars plucked from obscurity to star in the blockbuster. They have been showered with gifts and brief bursts of fame, but their day-to-day lives in the Garib Nagar slum — the "city of the poor" — are little changed. "Slumdog" filmmakers say they've done their best to help the young stars. They set up a trust to ensure the children have proper homes, a good education and a nest egg when they finish high school. They also donated $747,500 to a charity to help slum kids in Mumbai. Producer Christian Colson has described the trust as substantial but won't disclose how much it contains — not even to the children's parents — for fear of making the youngsters vulnerable to exploitation...the trustees wrote to Colson and the movie's director, Danny Boyle, last week to see if they could get more money, but haven't heard back.... Homeless mothers nursed their babies Thursday in what little shade they could find in the 100-degree heat. Nearby, a 98-year-old woman lay listless on a metal bed frame scattered with rags. A pregnant woman carried two large jugs of water, trying not to trip. A man on crutches hobbled through rubble littered with stuffed animals and children's shoes....Azhar and his family planned to spend the night on the muddy ground by the rubble of their shack. His 9-year-old co-star, Rubina Ali, has fared no better: Her family's shanty was flooded last month with sewage water from a backed-up drain.
Azhar was cast as the hero Jamal Malik's brother Salim, and Rubina as the young Latika, who grows up to be Jamal's love interest. Nine actors play the three lead characters in three stages of their lives. Azhar and Rubina were the only two who live in slums....

U.D. Mistry, an official with the city's Bombay Municipal Corporation, said the latest razing was part of a "pre-monsoon demolition drive"....shanty dwellers who can prove they have lived there more than 15 years — which would include Azhar's family — will be resettled elsewhere in government housing. Such promises often come to nothing, though, and the new housing, if provided, often is in poor-quality buildings on the outskirts of cities, far from jobs. Residents of Garib Nagar vowed to rebuild, though many have yet to pay off the loans they took out — at 20 percent monthly interest — to reconstruct the shanties they lost when the city tore them down last year... a cycle of destruction and debt few can escape...

...This is the case of Troy Davis in one paragraph. The bulk of the prosecutor’s evidence presented at Davis 1991 trial in the murder of an off-duty policeman in Georgia was based primarily on that of prosecution witnesses who later recanted their testimony. In addition, most of them have claimed repeatedly that they were pressured by police to point to Davis as the perpetrator. No murder weapon was ever found and no physical evidence linked him to the crime. One of the two main witnesses who has not recanted was the original suspect in the crime. Despite a bulk of new evidence, the state of Georgia has refused to grant a new trial. As recently as April 16th, 2009, Davis’ appeal for a new trial was rejected by a federal appeals court in a 2-1 decision. The dissenting judge was unsparing in her criticism of the Georgia’s legal case and his death sentence. She wrote: “To execute Davis, in the face of a significant amount of proffered evidence that may establish his actual innocence, is unconscionable and unconstitutional.” Yet, the execution of Troy Davis looms in the distance. the fundamental action that has kept Davis alive is a popular movement that spans the globe....
The United States is one of the few nations in the so-called free world that continues to practice this barbaric form of justice. In addition, it also ranks near the top among nations that do execute some of their criminals. Add to that the well-documented racial disparity in these executions, especially when looking at the numbers of whites executed for killing blacks versus the number of blacks executed for killing whites and those executions seem even more barbaric. When one considers this, it becomes essential to challenge not only the execution of Troy Davis, but the political system that supports the practice of state-sanctioned murder. This challenge becomes even more necessary when that system also tortures those it has arrested in its “war on terror” and imprisons them indefinitely without trial. A land with such a system is closer to a police state than the land of the free. Unless those who live within its borders resist these authoritarian policies, there may come a time when such resistance will find itself subject to them.
Not only is the movement to commute Troy Davis’ execution and get him a new trial an effort to save a man’s life, it is also part of an effort to prevent an increasingly authoritarian nation from becoming even more so.
