Digest note: Comparing media reports provides valuable lesson in how U.S. 'information warfare' -- essential foundation of its strategic global agenda --- works

Bookend stories from Fort Hood and Seattle get fishier and more ominous by the hour. In both cases, asking cui bono points ever more clearly to psywar / "black flag ops. Contradictory 'News' reports merit no rational explanations or corrections: Fort Hood reports initially stated the author and contents of emails weren't known. Then, that FBI had notified the Army of Hasan's "al qaeda" connections, but it did nothing, now that's denied and/or deleted. Today we're informed that Hasan-Awlaki communications started being intercepted last December. Considering the state's massive surveillance and propaganda machinery (touched upon below), it's clear that 'intel'/military are covering up their roles.
Many possibilities, among them: Hasan was a patsy, maybe one of the US' trained 'moderate' Muslim who 'betrayed' his 'jihad' pacification role; That Awlaki, safely ensconced supposedly in Yemen, and his government-known work for US. Seattle's 'anti-american cop killer' story is an ever more extravagant call for ratcheting up 'domestic' repression against a mythological 'terrorist' radical war against police. No state ops will write a new chapter in US history. Regardless of how the bits & pieces pull together, these events mark a major propaganda and policy page-turner in the US terror-war agenda. 11-07 Army Tests Sole-Killer Theory as Details Emerge
...military and federal investigators pointedly refuse to release further details on how the shootings happened, why there were initial reports of multiple attackers and why officials took several hours to correct news media reports that Major Hasan had been killed. Most significant, officials were not prepared to say whether the attack was the act of a lone and troubled man or connected to terrorist groups, foreign or domestic....
In Washington, a law enforcement official said an early search of Major Hasan’s computer did not indicate any direct exchanges with known terrorists. The official said investigators did not have a complete record of Major Hasan’s Internet use, as he had multiple e-mail accounts and used computers in several locations. The Federal Bureau of Investigation became aware earlier this year of Internet postings by a man calling himself Nidal Hasan. The postings drew attention because they favorably discussed suicide bombings. But the investigators are still not clear as to whether the writer was Major Hasan...

11-09 Officials: U.S. Army Told of Hasan's Contacts with al Qaeda
Army Major in Fort Hood Massacre Used 'Electronic Means' to Connect with Terrorists
Nov. 9, 2009 — ABC News
U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan was attempting to make contact with people associated with al Qaeda, two American officials briefed on classified material in the case told ABC News. According to the officials, the Army was informed of Hasan's contact, but it is unclear what, if anything, the Army did in response.
Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, said he requested the CIA and other intelligence agencies brief the committee on what was known, if anything, about Hasan by the U.S. intelligence community, only to be refused. In response, Hoekstra issued a document preservation request to four intelligence agencies. The letter dated November 7th, was sent to directors Dennis Blair (DNI), Robert Mueller (FBI), Lt. Gen Keith Alexander (NSA) and Leon Panetta (CIA)....
Investigators want to know if Hasan maintained contact with a radical mosque leader from Virginia, Anwar al Awlaki, who now lives in Yemen and runs a web site that promotes jihad around the world against the U.S. In a blog posting early Monday "Nidal Hassan Did the Right Thing," [NB: misspelling Hasan's name].

According to his site, Awlaki served as an imam in Denver, San Diego and Falls Church, Virginia. The Associated Press reported Sunday that Major Hasan attended the Falls Church mosque when Awlaki was there. The Telegraph of London reported that Awlaki had made contact with two of the 9/11 hijackers when he was in San Diego. He denied any knowledge of the hijacking plot and was never charged with any crime. After an intensive investigation by the FBI Awlaki moved to Yemen[...]

11-10 U.S. Knew of Suspect’s Tie to Radical Cleric
WASHINGTON — Intelligence agencies intercepted communications last year and this year between the military psychiatrist accused of shooting to death 13 people at Fort Hood and a radical cleric in Yemen known for his incendiary anti-American teachings. But the federal authorities dropped an inquiry into the matter after deciding that the messages from the psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan did not suggest any threat of violence and concluding that no further action was warranted, government officials said Monday. Major Hasan’s 10 to 20 messages to Anwar al-Awlaki, once a spiritual leader at a mosque in suburban Virginia where Major Hasan worshiped, indicate that the troubled military psychiatrist came to the attention of the authorities long before last Thursday’s shooting rampage at Fort Hood, but that the authorities left him in his post....
It is not clear what was said in the exchanges, believed to be e-mail messages, and whether they would have offered a hint at the major’s outspoken views or his declining emotional state. The communications, the subject of an inquiry by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Army investigators, provide the first indication that Major Hasan was in direct communication with the cleric, who on Monday praised Major Hasan on his Web site, saying the Army psychiatrist “did the right thing” in attacking soldiers preparing to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq.

Depending on what is contained in the exchanges, the disclosure of the government’s decision not to take any steps against Major Hasan may provoke criticism of the F.B.I. and Army investigators for missing possible warning signs of an alleged mass killer. But federal officials briefed on the case said their decision to break off the investigation was reasonable based on the information about Major Hasan that was compiled at the time, which they said gave no indication he was likely to engage in violence....

Counterterrorism and military officials said Monday night that the communications, first intercepted last December as part of an unrelated investigation [???], were consistent with a research project the psychiatrist was then conducting at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington on post-traumatic stress disorder. “There was no indication that Major Hasan was planning an imminent [???] attack at all, or that he was directed to do anything,” one senior investigator said....
In a statement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said, “At this point, there is no information to indicate Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan had any co-conspirators or was part of a broader terrorist plot.”...that “because the content of the communications was explainable by his research and nothing else was found,” investigators decided “that Major Hasan was not involved in terrorist activities or terrorist planning.”...
Mr. Awlaki has become, through his Web site, a prominent proponent of militant Islam. “He’s one of the most popular figures among hard-line, English-speaking jihadis around the world,” said Jarret Brachman, the author of “Global Jihadism” and a terrorism consultant to the government.Mr. Brachman said Mr. Awlaki was especially appealing to young Muslims who are curious about radical ideas but not yet committed. “He’s American, he’s funny, and he speaks in a very understandable way,”

11-10 Blame game erupts over probe of Fort Hood suspect
Government officials said a Defense Department terrorism investigator looked into Hasan's contacts with a radical imam months ago, but a military official denied prior knowledge of the Army psychiatrist's contacts with any Muslim extremists. The two government officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case on the record, said the Washington-based joint terrorism task force overseen by the FBI was notified of communications between Hasan and a radical imam overseas, and the information was turned over to a Defense Criminal Investigative Service employee assigned to the task force. The communications were gathered by investigators beginning in December 2008 and continuing into early this year.
That defense investigator wrote up an assessment of Hasan after reviewing the communications and the Army major's personnel file, according to these officials. The assessment concluded Hasan did not merit further investigation - in large part because his communications with the imam were centered on a research paper about the effects of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan...
The disclosure Tuesday of the defense investigator's role suggested that the U.S. military was aware of worrisome behavior by the massacre suspect long before the attack. Just hours later, a senior defense official, also demanding anonymity, directly contradicted that notion.
The senior defense official said neither the Army nor any other part of the Defense Department knew of Hasan's contacts with any Muslim extremists. But the defense official carefully conceded this view was based upon what the Pentagon knows now. Hours later, the same senior defense official reiterated flatly that the Defense Department was not notified before the Fort Hood massacre of investigations into Hasan, despite the participation of two Defense Department investigators on two joint task forces run by the FBI that looked at Hasan....

Pentagon sets sights on public opinion
The Pentagon is steadily and dramatically increasing the money it spends to win what it calls "the human terrain" of world public opinion. In the process, it is raising concerns of spreading propaganda at home in violation of federal law. An Associated Press investigation found that over the past five years, the money the military spends on winning hearts and minds at home and abroad has grown by 63 percent, to at least $4.7 billion this year, according to Department of Defense budgets and other documents. That's almost as much as it spent on body armor for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2004 and 2006. This year, the Pentagon will employ 27,000 people just for recruitment, advertising and public relations — almost as many as the total 30,000-person work force in the State Department. The biggest chunk of funds — about $1.6 billion — goes into recruitment and advertising. Another $547 million goes into public affairs, which reaches American audiences. And about $489 million more goes into what is known as psychological operations. Staffing across all these areas costs about $2.1 billion, as calculated by the number of full-time employees and the military's average cost per service member. That's double the staffing costs for 2003. Recruitment and advertising are the only two areas where Congress has authorized the military to influence the American public. Far more controversial is public affairs, because of the prohibition on propaganda to the American public.

Deprogramming Jihadists
...Though the exact nature of the role that religious belief plays in the recruitment of jihadists is the subject of much debate among scholars of terrorism, a growing number contend that ideology is far less important than family and group dynamics, psychological and emotional needs. “We’re finding that they don’t generally join for religious reasons,” John Horgan told me. A political psychologist who directs the International Center for the Study of Terrorism at Penn State, Horgan has interviewed dozens of former terrorists. “Terrorist movements seem to provide a sense of adventure, excitement, vision, purpose, camaraderie,” he went on, “and involvement with them has an allure that can be difficult to resist. But the ideology is usually something you acquire once you’re involved.”...
How and why violent extremists come to leave their organizations are a fairly new focus in academic studies of terrorism. Horgan’s findings that simple fear and disillusionment can play a major role in an individual’s decision to disengage from his group...echoed by a recent RAND Corporation report on the demise of terrorist groups... found that efforts by police and intelligence agents to create intense internal pressure within terrorist groups are more successful fighting extremism than military actions...

In seattle the state continues to embellish another ominous, politically expedient cop-killer story
DNA, ballistics tie man to cop killing, police say
The firebombing of four Seattle police vehicles on Oct. 22 was a failed attempt to kill police officers by the same man now suspected of the ambush-slaying of Officer Timothy Brenton, police officials said Monday. During a wide-ranging news conference, Seattle police laid out details of the intense, weeklong investigation into Brenton's killing on Halloween night that ended Friday when detectives shot and wounded Christopher John Monfort outside his Tukwila apartment. Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said a search of Monfort's apartment has turned up a rifle that is "an identical ballistic match" to the .223-caliber weapon used to kill Brenton and wound rookie officer Britt Sweeney. Police also have matched DNA from Monfort to "signature" items left at the firebombing at a city maintenance yard and at the scene of the shooting — an American flag left at the arson scene and a flag-emblazoned bandanna found near Brenton's patrol car....
A note, listing grievances about "bad officers, jury nullification and bad government," was taped to the window of a nearby vehicle, Pugel said. It referenced "police funerals" in the past tense, indicating to police that whoever found it was to have also discovered the bodies of officers who were supposed to have died in the blasts. A "military-style" knife and the flag were also found at the scene. The note also referenced anger over alleged instances of police brutality...

Israeli Scientists: DNA can be fabricated
TEL AVIV, Israel, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/
Nucleix, Ltd., an emerging life science company specializing in forensic DNA analysis, announced that company researchers have proven DNA evidence found at crime scenes can easily be falsified using basic equipment, know-how and access to DNA or a DNA database. Recognizing the need to safeguard the accuracy and credibility of DNA samples in the field of forensics, Nucleix scientists have developed a novel assay termed "DNA authentication" for combating this form of "biological identity theft" by distinguishing between in-vivo (real) and in-vitro (fake) DNA. ... Use of DNA fingerprinting as evidence in criminal proceedings relies on the assumption that the DNA sample is genuine. However, standard molecular biology techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), molecular cloning and more recently available whole genome amplification, enable anyone with basic equipment and limited know-how to synthesize unlimited amounts of artificial (in-vitro) DNA with any desired profile. Such fake DNA can easily be incorporated into genuine human tissues (e.g., blood, saliva) or applied to surfaces and planted at crime scenes. As reported in the paper, Nucleix's research demonstrated that current forensic procedures cannot distinguish between real and fake DNA evidence. Moreover, Nucleix showed that in vitro-synthesized DNA samples that were profiled by a leading independent forensic laboratory were indistinguishable from in vivo-generated or real DNA.

Inventor decries misuse of DNA to criminalize the innocent
Sir Alec Jeffreys, inventor of DNA fingerprinting, [is] concerned that it is being used to cast a shadow of criminality over people who have committed no crime. The Rowntree Trust, which has published a report on the ‘Database State’, concluded, controversially, that a quarter of the 46 public-sector UK databases it studied were actually illegal. The level of intrusion breaks all kinds of rulings yet still most of us remain in the dark until information is leaked or stolen. As the man who set up the NHS database said: ‘You cannot stop the wicked doing wicked things.’

Cyber Command: Building the Infrastructure for High-Tech War Crimes
by Tom Burghardt
...Under contract to DARPA, capitalist grifter Computer Science Corporation, combined electronic mapping and satellite image technology to create purely electronic representations of cities that are, or may in the future, come under the purview of U.S. military occupation. Scores of cities around the world are being electronically mapped by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in order to create a "virtualized reality" for U.S. "warfighters."
Within complex simulation models, the structures of Middle Eastern or indeed, any city, have been classified using "Urban Terrain Zones" based "on international databases of the construction materials and practices used in the different parts of target cities: steel, glass and concrete in city cores, older brick, stone or mud in casbahs,"...
And even larger simulations of global south megacities are providing grist for the murderous mill of U.S. military "gamers" as they imagine full-scale counterinsurgent warfare well into the future. One electronic simulation, "Urban Resolve," has actually mapped an eight square mile swathe of Jakarta, Indonesia in three dimensions! According to Graham, "this has been done down to the interior of the (1.6 million) buildings, and also involves 109,000 mobile 'vehicles' and 'civilians,' as well as the subterranean infrastructures."

Urban Reasoning and Geospatial Exploitation Technology (URGENT), DARPA's Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO), is searching for "new technologies" to defeat urban insurgencies. According to IPTO's "Mission Statement" on the program: The recognition of targets in urban environments poses unique operational challenges for the warfighter. ... Today's urban missions involve analyzing a multitude of urban objects in the area of regard. As military operations in urban regions have grown, the need to identify urban objects has become an important requirement for the military. Understanding the locations, shapes, and classifications of objects is needed for a broad range of pressing urban mission planning analytical queries.

Pentagon Plans New Arm to Wage Cyberspace Wars
WASHINGTON — The Pentagon plans to create a new military command for cyberspace, administration officials said Thursday, stepping up preparations by the armed forces to conduct both offensive and defensive computer warfare. The military command would complement a civilian effort to be announced by President Obama on Friday that would overhaul the way the United States safeguards its computer networks... Officials said that in addition to the unclassified strategy paper to be released by Mr. Obama on Friday, a classified set of presidential directives is expected to lay out the military’s new responsibilities and how it coordinates its mission with that of the N.S.A., where most of the expertise on digital warfare resides today... It is still unclear whether the military’s new command or the N.S.A. — or both — will actually conduct this new kind of offensive cyberoperations... “We are not comfortable discussing the question of offensive cyberoperations, but we consider cyberspace a war-fighting domain,“ said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman. “We need to be able to operate within that domain just like on any battlefield, which includes protecting our freedom of movement and preserving our capability to perform in that environment.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates signed a memorandum June 23 that announced the launch of U.S. Cyber Command (CYBERCOM). A scheme by securocrats in the works for several years, the order specifies that the new office will be a “subordinate unified command” under U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM).
According to the memorandum, CYBERCOM “will reach initial operating capability (IOC) not later than October 2009 and full operating capability (FOC) not later than October 2010.”
Gates has recommended that this new Pentagon domain be led by Lt. General Keith Alexander, the current Director of the National Security Agency (NSA).... based at Ft. Meade, Maryland, NSA’s headquarters.
Gates’ memorandum specifies that CYBERCOM “must be capable of synchronizing warfighting effects across the global security environment as well as providing support to civil authorities and international partners.” Ostensibly launched to protect military networks against malicious cyberattacks, the command’s offensive nature is underlined by its role as STRATCOM’s operational cyber wing. In addition to a defensive brief to “harden” the “dot-mil” domain, the Pentagon plan calls for an offensive capacity, one that will deploy cyber weapons against imperialism’s adversaries.
One of ten Unified Combatant Commands, STRATCOM is the successor organization to Strategic Air Command (SAC). Charged with space operations (military satellites), information warfare, missile defense, global command and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), as well as global strike and strategic deterrence (America’s first-strike nuclear arsenal)...the Pentagon’s geek squad, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is currently building a National Cyber Range (NCR), a test bed for developing, testing and fielding cyber weapons....
STRATCOM commander Gen. Kevin Chilton has suggested “the White House retains the option to respond with physical force–potentially even using nuclear weapons–if a foreign entity conducts a disabling cyber attack against U.S. computer networks,” according to a Global Security Newswire report. During a Defense Writers Group breakfast in May, Chilton told journalists:
“I think you don’t take any response options off the table from an attack on the United States of America. Why would we constrain ourselves on how we respond?” [...]

Israel turns to cyberware ...
Reuters, 7/7/9
In the late 1990s, a computer specialist from the Shin Bet security service hacked into the mainframe of the Pi Glilot fuel depot north of Tel Aviv.It was meant to be a routine test of safeguards at the strategic site. But it also tipped off Israel to the potential such hi-tech infiltrations offered for real sabotage. "Once inside the Pi Glilot system, we suddenly realized that, aside from accessing secret data, we could also set off deliberate explosions, just by programming a re-route of the pipelines," said a veteran of the Shin Bet drill...
Cyberwarfare teams nestle deep within Israel's spy agencies, which have rich experience in traditional sabotage techniques and are cloaked in official secrecy and censorship.
They can draw on the know-how of Israeli commercial firms that are among the world's hi-tech leaders and whose staff are often veterans of elite military intelligence computer units.
"To judge by my interaction with Israeli experts in various international forums, Israel can definitely be assumed to have advanced cyber-attack capabilities," said Scott Borg, director of the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, which advises various Washington agencies on cyber security...The US is in the process of setting up a "Cyber Command" to oversee Pentagon operations...

U.S. Spies Buy Stake in Firm That Monitors Blogs, Tweets
By Noah Shachtman
October 19, 2009
In-Q-Tel the investment arm of the CIA and the wider intelligence community, is putting cash into Visible Technologies , a software firm that specializes in monitoring social media. It’s part of a larger movement within the spy services to get better at using ”open source intelligence ” — information that’s publicly available, but often hidden in the flood of TV shows, newspaper articles, blog posts, online videos and radio reports generated every day.
Visible crawls over half a million web 2.0 sites a day, scraping more than a million posts and conversations taking place on blogs, online forums, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Amazon. Customers get customized, real-time feeds of what’s being said on these sites, based on a series of keywords. “That’s kind of the basic step — get in and monitor,” says company senior vice president Blake Cahill. Then Visible “scores” each post, labeling it as positive or negative, mixed or neutral. It examines how influential a conversation or an author is. (”Trying to determine who really matters,” as Cahill puts it.)
Visible gives users a chance to tag posts, forward them to colleagues and allow them to response through a web interface. In-Q-Tel says it wants Visible to keep track of foreign social media, and give spooks “early-warning detection on how issues are playing internationally,” spokesperson Donald Tighe tells Danger Room. Of course, such a tool can also be pointed inward, at domestic bloggers or tweeters. Visible already keeps tabs on web 2.0 sites for Dell, AT&T and Verizon. For Microsoft, the company is monitoring the buzz on its Windows 7 rollout....
trupulse2Visible has been trying for nearly a year to break into the government field. In late 2008, the company teamed up with the Washington, DC, consulting firm Concepts & Strategies, which has handled media monitoring and translation services for U.S. Strategic Command and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, among others. On its website, Concepts & Strategies is recruiting “social media engagement specialists” with Defense Department experience and a high proficiency in Arabic, Farsi, French, Urdu or Russian. The company is also looking for an “information system security engineer” who already has a “Top Secret SCI [Sensitive Compartmentalized Information] with NSA Full Scope Polygraph” security clearance.

The intelligence community has been interested in social media for years. In-Q-Tel has sunk money into companies like Attensity, which recently announced its own web 2.0-monitoring service. The agencies have their own, password-protected blogs and wikis — even a MySpace for spooks. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence maintains an Open Source Center, which combs publicly available information, including web 2.0 sites. Doug Naquin, the Center’s Director, told an audience of intelligence professionals in October 2007 that “we’re looking now at YouTube, which carries some unique and honest-to-goodness intelligence…. We have groups looking at what they call ‘citizens media’: people taking pictures with their cell phones and posting them on the internet. Then there’s social media, phenomena like MySpace and blogs.”
But, “the CIA specifically needs the help of innovative tech firms to keep up with the pace of innovation in social media. Experienced IC [intelligence community] analysts may not be the best at detecting the incessant shift in popularity of social-networking sites. They need help in following young international internet user-herds as they move their allegiance from one site to another,” Lewis Shepherd, the former senior technology officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency, says in an e-mail. “Facebook says that more than 70 percent of its users are outside the U.S., in more than 180 countries. There are more than 200 non-U.S., non-English-language microblogging Twitter-clone sites today. If the intelligence community ignored that tsunami of real-time information, we’d call them incompetent.”

African-Americans slam Obama in White House protest
Decrying Barack Obama as "white power in black face," hundreds of African-Americans marched on the White House Saturday to protest policies of the first black US president, and demand that he bring US troops home.More than 200 people gathered for the first public demonstration by African Americans against the Obama administration since his historic inauguration in January, and slammed the president for continuing what they described as Washington’s "imperialist" agenda around the world. "We recognize that Barack Hussein Obama is white power in black face," civil rights activist Omali Yeshitela, chairman of the Black is Back coalition which arranged the protest, called into a megaphone as the group marched outside the mansion’s gates. "He is a tool of our imperialist enemies and we demand our freedom. And we demand that Obama withdraw all the troops from Afghanistan right now." Protesters also called for Obama to order troops out of Iraq and to scrap Africom, the controversial year-old United States Africa Command, and demanded "hands off" Venezuela and ends to the Cuba embargo and the Zimbabwe blockade....demonstrators held up placards bearing messages such as "US out of Afghanistan" and "Stop US war against Iraq."

Settler rabbi authors guidelines on killing gentiles

Jews have the right to kill non-Jews in just about any circumstance, wrote Rabbi Yitzhak Shapira, head of a religious school in the illegal settlement of Yitzhar, near Nablus. "If we kill a gentile who has sinned or has violated one of the seven commandments...there is nothing wrong with the murder," according to Hebrew-language Israeli newspaper Maariv. In his new book, The King's Torah, Shapira, who heads the Od Yosef Chai yeshiva, justifies the slaying of "non-Jews who demand the land for themselves," and for, among other transgressions, "hostile blasphemy."...

Blackwater Said to Approve Iraqi Payoffs After Shootings
WASHINGTON — Top executives at Blackwater Worldwide authorized secret payments of about $1 million to Iraqi officials that were intended to silence their criticism and buy their support after a September 2007 episode in which Blackwater security guards fatally shot 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad, according to former company officials.Blackwater approved the cash payments in December 2007, the officials said, as protests over the deadly shootings in Nisour Square stoked long-simmering anger inside Iraq about reckless practices by the security company’s employees...
Even after the furor set off by the shootings, State Department officials made it clear they did not believe they could operate in Baghdad without Blackwater, and Iraqi officials eventually dropped their public demands for the company’s immediate ouster....
[Former Blackwater executives] said that Cofer Black, who was then the company’s vice chairman and a former top C.I.A. and State Department official, learned of the plan from another Blackwater manager while he was in Baghdad discussing compensation for families of the shooting victims with United States Embassy officials... Erik Prince, the company’s chairman and founder, did not dispute that there was a bribery plan, according to a former Blackwater executive...Mr. Black resigned the following year... the company, now called Xe Services, dismissed the allegations as “baseless” and said the company would not comment about former employees... A senior State Department official said that American diplomats were not aware of any payoffs to Iraqi officials....
Blackwater continued operating as the prime contractor providing security for the United States Embassy in Baghdad until spring, when the Iraqi government said it would deny the company an operating license. The State Department replaced Blackwater with a rival in May, but the company still does some work for the department in Iraq...
Since 2001, Blackwater has undergone explosive growth, not only from security contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also from classified work for the Central Intelligence Agency that included taking part in a now defunct program to assassinate leaders of Al Qaeda and to load missiles on Predator drones ... From 2004 through today, the company has collected more than $1.5 billion for its work protecting American diplomats and providing air transportation for them inside Iraq.

John A. Muhammad Executed in Virginia
...While the Supreme Court did not comment in refusing to hear Mr. Muhammad’s appeal, three justices objected to the relative haste accompanying the execution. Justice John Paul Stevens... complained that “under our normal practice,” Mr. Muhammad’s petition for the court to take his case would have been discussed at the justices’ conference scheduled for Nov. 24. But because Virginia scheduled the execution for Tuesday, the judicial process was rushed, Justice Stevens said in a statement joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsbur and Sonia Sotomayor
After Mr. Muhammad was sentenced to death in Virginia for shooting Mr. Meyers, Maryland prosecutors arranged to have him tried again for six murders in Montgomery County. At that trial, Mr. Malvo, who is now 24, testified at length. Throughout both trials and a number of subsequent appeals, Mr. Muhammad continued to profess his innocence... Under Virginia law, a prisoner is allowed to choose the method by which he or she will be put to death — either lethal injection or the electric chair. Mr. Muhammad declined to select a method. More than 20, 000 thousand protest US air base in Japan:
Thousands of Japanese gathered in sweltering heat on the southern island of Okinawa yesterday, days before President Obama's visit, demanding that a US Marine base be moved out of the region... re-siting of Futenma air base threatens to stall a realignment of the 47,000 US military personnel in Japan and sour defence ties between the two countries, seen as key in a region home to a rising China and an unpredictable North Korea . "Okinawa's future is for us, the Okinawan people to decide," [said] Ginowan mayor Yoichi Iha "We cannot let America decide for us."... Afghan insurgents make wreckage of armored vehicles
WASHINGTON — Taliban-led insurgents in Afghanistan have devised ways to cripple and even destroy the expensive armored vehicles that offer U.S. forces the best protection against roadside bombs by using increasingly large explosive charges and rocket-propelled grenades, according to U.S. soldiers and defense officials. At least eight American troops have been killed this year in attacks on so-called Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicles, or MRAPs, and 40 more have been wounded, said a senior U.S. military official who, like others interviewed on the issue, declined to be further identified because of the issue's sensitivity....The attacks also raise questions about how vulnerable a new, lighter MRAP, the M-ATV, which is now being shipped to Afghanistan, are to the massive explosive charges that Taliban-led insurgents have been using against its bigger cousin. The insurgents are also hitting MRAPs with rocket-propelled grenades that can penetrate their steel armor, according to U.S troops in Afghanistan, several of whom showed McClatchy a photograph of a hole that one of the projectiles had punched in the hull of an MRAP. The Pentagon has spent more than $26.8 billion to develop and build three versions of the largest MRAPs, totaling some 16,000 vehicles, mostly for the Army and Marine Corps, according to an August report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. Another $5.4 billion is being spent to produce 5,244 M-ATVs, the smaller version that U.S. defense officials contend offers as much protection as the large models do, but is more maneuverable and better suited to Afghanistan's dirt tracks and narrow mountain roads.

Occupiers involved in drug trade: Afghan minister
General Khodaidad Khodaidad, Afghan minister of counter narcotics, said the majority of drugs are stockpiled in two provinces controlled by troops from the US, the UK, and Canada, that NATO forces are taxing the production of opium in the regions under their control. Afghanistan is the world's biggest supplier of opium. Drug production in the Central Asian country has increased dramatically since the US-led invasion eight years ago

Obama adviser Brzezinski, the Mujahideen & the Drugs
...While the CIA ran its operations during the Vietnam War, the Golden Triangle supplied the world with most of its heroin. After that war ended in 1975, an intriguing event took place in 1979 when Zbigniew Brzezinski covertly manipulated the Soviet Union into invading Afghanistan. Behind the scenes, the CIA, along with Pakistan’s ISI, were secretly funding Afghanistan’s mujahideen to fight their Russian foes. Prior to this war, opium production in Afghanistan was minimal. But according to historian Alfred McCoy, an expert on the subject, a shift in focus took place. “Within two years of the onslaught of the CIA operation in Afghanistan, the Pakistan-Afghanistan borderlands became the world’s top heroin producer.” Soon, as Professor Michel Chossudovsky notes, “CIA assets again controlled the heroin trade. As the mujahideen guerrillas seized territory inside Afghanistan, they ordered peasants to plant poppies as a revolutionary tax. Across the border in Pakistan, Afghan leaders and local syndicates under the protection of Pakistan intelligence operated hundreds of heroin laboratories.”
Eventually, the Soviet Union was defeated (their version of Vietnam), and ultimately lost the Cold War. The aftermath, however, proved to be an entirely new can of worms. During his research, McCoy discovered that “the CIA supported various Afghan drug lords, for instance Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. The CIA did not handle heroin, but it did provide its drug lord allies with transport, arms, and political protection.”
By 1994, a new force emerged in the region—the Taliban—that took over the drug trade.... “the Americans had secretly, and through the Pakistanis [specifically the ISI], supported the Taliban’s assumption of power.” [Chossudovsky] These strange bedfellows endured a rocky relationship until July 2000 when Taliban leaders banned the planting of poppies. This alarming development, along with other disagreements over proposed oil pipelines through Eurasia, posed a serious problem for power centers in the West. Without heroin money at their disposal, billions of dollars could not be funneled into various CIA black budget projects....Fifteen days after 9-11, CIA Director George Tenet sent his top-secret Special Operations Group (SOG) into Afghanistan. One of the biggest revelations in Tenet’s book, At the Center of the Storm, was that CIA forces directed the Afghanistan invasion, not the Pentagon [....] http://www.inteldaily.com/news/143/ARTICLE/8808/2008-11-24.html?disqus_r...

CIA: Secret Operations, Drug Money
By Farzana Shah
In Afghanistan, U.S./NATO have put the blame on Taliban for poppy cultivation to finance their resistance to allied forces. Ironically, it was only in Taliban era when the world had seen a sharp decline in opium crop in Afghanistan. The Afghan Taliban had banned opium cultivation nationwide, probably for the first time in Afghan history. A more important question is how and when this business of drug production and trafficking started in region? CIA has been using drug money since long to generate money to support its operations all over the world. It did not start in Afghanistan it was brought here after experimenting somewhere else. This is something which is not a lead story in international media for obvious reasons despite the fact it is harming millions of lives around the globe. 1. CIA’s secret Operations

Obama Regime: Toss Out NSA Warrantless Wiretapping Lawsuit
by Tom Burghardt / November 6th, 2009
President Barack Obama instructed Justice Department attorneys to argue last week in San Francisco before Federal District Judge Vaughn Walker, that he must toss out the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Shubert v. Bush lawsuit challenging the secret state’s driftnet surveillance of Americans’ electronic communications. This latest move by the administration follows a pattern replicated countless times by Obama since assuming the presidency in January: denounce the lawless behavior of his Oval Office predecessor while continuing, even expanding, the reach of unaccountable security agencies that subvert constitutional guarantees barring “unreasonable searches and seizures.” ...
In demanding that the independent federal judiciary toss these cases, the Obama administration is asserting a broad interpretation of Executive Branch privileges that caused much outrage and hand-wringing by congressional Democrats–when they were out of power. Under the “change” regime however, what were once viewed by Democrats and their supporters as prime examples of Bushist lawlessness and contempt for constitutional safeguards, are now deemed vital state secrets that “protect” the American people, even as the capitalist state wages an endless “War on Terror” to seize other people’s resources for geostrategic advantage over the competition.

WASHINGTON — The nation’s top military officer said Wednesday that he expected the Pentagon to ask Congress in the next few months for emergency financing to support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, even though President Obama pledged to end the Bush administration practice of paying for the conflicts with so-called supplemental funds that are outside the normal Defense Department budget. The financing would be on top of the $130 billion that Congress authorized for the wars just last month. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff did not say how much additional money would be needed...

US - Israel: Forging NATO Missile Shield, Rehearsing War With Iran
By Rick Rozoff
06 Nov 2009
...The United States and Israel have just completed the largest joint interceptor missile exercises ever conducted by the two nations and, in terms of scope and sophistication, possibly the most comprehensive joint live-fire anti-ballistic missile drills held by any combination of countries...“the largest joint exercise ever held by the countries,” [2] which included seventeen U.S. warships, and represented “the first time that all these systems have been deployed in Israel together”. [3]...“We’re here for some very specific reasons, some specific threats that the Israelis are interested in, that we’re interested in. And that’s as far as I want to go down that road.”...

Operation Juniper Cobra 10 began on October 21 and ended on November 3. During those two weeks over 1,000 U.S. and an equal number of Israeli troops participated in an integrated series of missile maneuvers whose main objective was "testing five different missile defense systems...and creating the infrastructure that would be necessary in the event that the Obama administration decides to deploy US systems here in the event of a conflict." [1]...

Iran and its neighbors are not the only nations in the gun sights of the layered, integrated missile killer system premiered in Israel over the past two weeks. In addition to the “specific threats” motif that ran through reports of Juniper Cobra, another theme was repeatedly stressed: That what the exercises focused on was a trial run for a NATO missile system to encompass the entire European continent. The American and Israeli press in unison highlighted that plan. For example: “It’s a very prompt and sizable demonstration of what the new administration’s missile defense plans are.” [12] “A major air defense exercise launched with Israel this week will help the United States craft its European missile shield, a U.S. commander said [….] http://www.inteldaily.com/news/172/ARTICLE/12556/2009-11-06.html

Steven Aftergood of the Project on Government Secrecy (part of the Federation of American Scientists) gave an excellent introduction to these publications in 1997:
Many people will recall that when Iranian revolutionaries seized the U.S. embassy in Teheran in 1979, they acquired a large cache of classified U.S. government documents, some of which had been shredded and painstakingly reassembled, which they proceeded to publish. What no one seems to have noticed, however, is that they never stopped publishing! By 1995, an amazing 77 volumes of "Documents from the U.S. Espionage Den" (Asnad-i lanih-'i Jasusi) had been collected and published

In a frequently referenced 1987 article on the subject, Edward Jay Epstein wrote:
...Iranian students seized an entire archive of CIA and State Department documents, which represented one of the most extensive losses of secret data in the history of any modern intelligence service. Even though many of these documents were shredded into thin strips before the Embassy, and CIA base, was surrendered, the Iranians managed to piece them back together. They were then published in 1982 in 54 volumes under the title "Documents From the U.S. Espionage Den", and are sold in the United States for $246.50. As the Teheran Embassy evidently served as a regional base for the CIA, The scope of this captures intelligence goes well beyond intelligence reports on Iran alone. They cover the Soviet Union, Turkey, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. There are also secret analysis of arcane subjects ranging from the effectiveness of Israeli intelligence to Soviet oil production. [Read the full article here

Former US Embassy hostage handed Iran post
Sun, 08 Nov 2009
The United States has appointed veteran diplomat John Limbert, who was held hostage at the US embassy in Tehran in 1979, as its senior Iran official at the State Department... Limbert will serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iran in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, replacing Dennis Ross who has been moved to the US National Security Council to become a special assistant to the US president focusing on Iran. Department sources also said that Limbert would play an active role in negotiations with Iran, working with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns. As the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iran in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, Limbert will report to Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman.
One of the sources at the State Department said, "He will be the most senior official at State who deals exclusively with Iran," adding that in more than two decades at the Department, "we've never had a DAS for Iran." Limbert also serves on the advisory board of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC). Former ambassador to Mauritania and former chargé d'affaires of the US Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, Limbert can speak fluent Persian and has worked as an English instructor at Shiraz University in central Iran from 1969 to 1972. The former US diplomat is expected to provide strategic advice and perspective on the region, offer assessments and also act to ensure effective policy integration throughout the region.
Limbert also worked at the American Embassy in Iran when it was taken over by students in November 4, 1979 and was held for fourteen months.

Clashes in Iran on Anniversary of Embassy Takeover
BEIRUT — Protesters in Tehran tried to turn major government-sponsored anti-American rally into a protest against the election. President Obama appealed to Iranians to “open the door” to America. .. Protesters openly flouted the day’s official anti-American message, with about a thousand people, many wearing clothing and accessories in the opposition’s signature bright green color, gathering outside the Russian Embassy in Tehran and chanting, “The real den of spies is the Russian embassy.” The American embassy has been called the “den of spies” in Iran for decades. [ed.: referring to u.s. 'diplomat' spies taken hostage by mainly secular, communist - led anti-imperialists, this slogan starkly reveals pro-american imperialist-zionist nature of u.s. backed 'green color revolution' wanna-bes] ... the police appear to have fought back protesters more aggressively than they did in September, when opposition supporters came out in much larger numbers and virtually hijacked another annual state-sponsored [pro-Palestinian] rally known as Jerusalem Day.... The protests in Tehran began in Haft-e-Tir square, where crowds began forming in mid-morning and chanting “Death to the Dictator!” and other anti-government slogans. [if protesters in amerika chanted 'death to the dictator/president?!]...Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave an angry speech Tuesday accusing the United States of dictating the terms of the nuclear deal, and suggested that Mr. Obama was no different from his predecessor... Mr. Ahmadinejad has argued that Iran has tamed the West’s arrogance and should now agree to the proposed nuclear deal... The status of the plan remains unclear, with Western leaders showing signs of impatience over Iran’s delays...

President Obama released his own statement on Wednesday to mark the 30th anniversary of the embassy takeover repeating his appeals to move beyond the two countries’ mutual distrust. The statement expressed sympathy for Iran’s opposition movement, and suggested that time was running out on a United Nations -backed plan that is aimed at averting a showdown over Iran’s nuclear ambitions... The anniversary of the embassy takeover underscored a broader unease about relations with the West. The day has long been a touchstone for Iran’s revolutionaries, but Mr. Obama’s outreach has complicated the state’s reflexive anti-Americanism...

Video of Protests in Iran on Anniversary of Embassy Seizure
By Jack Healy
The anti-government protests were meant to co-opt an annual rite in Iran — the commemoration of Nov. 4, 1979, when hard-line [aka revolutionary anti-imperialist] students overran the United States Embassy and took employees [aka spies, as reconstructed documents proved] there hostage, setting off a 444-day crisis. In Washington, President Obama issued a statement on Wednesday calling the incident one that put the United States and Iran on the path of “sustained suspicion, mistrust, and confrontation.” Some Iranian protesters had their own message for Mr. Obama on Wednesday. In this video clip, voices are heard chanting “Obama, Obama, ya ba oona, ya ba ma,” which translates as “Obama, Obama, with them or with us.” ...
Images emerging from Iran showed the counterpoint between the official demonstrations, where marchers burned American flags and the opposition’s protests where one video posted on YouTube shows green-clad marchers shouting anti-government slogans, running from police and pulling down a government billboard...
The pro-reform presence on the streets of Tehran Wednesday seemed not to be nearly as large as the seas of people who filled the capital’s streets last June in the wake of the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Reports from Iran on Wednesday said opposition protesters had been overpowered by security officers, and appeared to be outnumbered by the government-sanctioned demonstrators. Kian Tajbakhsh, an Iranian-American social scientist/sociologist and urban planner, has been convicted of fomenting unrest against the government and sentenced to more than 12 years in prison. The Intelligence Ministry has been keen to point out that the Wilson Center receives U.S. government money, as well as money from the Open Society Institute, the New York-based foundation begun by the financier George Soros. On May 22, the ministry announced that O.S.I. had “played key roles in intrigues that have led to color revolutions in former Soviet republics in recent years” and now aimed to overthrow Iran’s government as well...The Iranian Web site Zamaaneh reported that the indictment against Mr. Tajbakhsh charged him with “propaganda activities” and acting against national security by working with the Open Society Institute supported by George Soros.... elements of the Iranian government have accused Mr. Soros, who finances democracy-building programs in many countries, of plotting to overthrow Iran’s Islamic system of government in what the authorities call a “velvet revolution.”
Washington has denounced Tajbaksh's arrest. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton appealed in August for Tajbakhsh's release, and he was specially named in a call by the British rock star Sting to free all political prisoners in Iran.

Education as "Soft Power"? Inside the American University of Iraq
By Mark Greuter
Last year, I was hired by the American University of Iraq, based in Sulaimani (Iraqi Kurdistan as an English lecturer. AUI-S has been in business since October 2007, promising an "American-style liberal arts education" for Iraqi students. I wondered about the name from the beginning. For one thing, it more or less declares itself a neoimperialist venture in the "soft power" sense... AUI-S was founded by a prominent group of Kurdish politicians (including Iraqi President Jalal Talabani) and American neoconservatives. Iraqi deputy Prime Minister Dr. Barham Salih was the prime mover, and the team hired an American, John Agresto, to begin AUIS as chancellor. Agresto had been working in Baghdad with the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) before the American University project. Agresto has ties to Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. He used to work with Lynne Cheney at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)...the current chancellor Joshua Mitchell... makes it a point to showcase his Christian beliefs, often quoting from the Bible during speeches, talks, and in email sermons
