PFLP: Meet occupation's settlement crimes in Jerusalem with popular revolt
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
March 16, 2010 The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine called to confront the occupation's campaign of settlement and Judaization of Jerusalem with a popular uprising that can pave the way for an alternative strategy and a unified national leadership. Only a mass popular mobilization can fully meet the challenges imposed by the occupation's aggressive expansionist offensive against the land, people and holy sites of Palestine!...

PFLP: US position on settlements and negotiations is a cover for the crimes of the occupation
March 14, 2010
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine condemned negotiations of any shape or form with the occupier, saying that what is needed for the Palestinian people is action, not words with the occupier. On March 13, 2010, the PFLP issued a press statement saying that the US is a fundamental strategic partner of the Zionist regime....The Front reiterated its utter refusal to bow to the dictates of the U.S. administration or accept it as a reference, saying that its false promises and deceptive initiatives are completely rejected. It demanded the Palestinian Authority presidency immediately rescind its willingness to participate in so-called "indirect negotiations" in blatant violation of the decision of the PLO Central Council and the will of the Palestinian people.
Comrade Khalida Jarrar, member of the Political Bureau of the PFLP, said that the Palestinian leadership must be held accountable for any return to so-called "indirect" or "direct" negotiations, saying that any such return is a violation of the Palestinian Central Council decisions and the will of the Palestinian people. The Front affirmed that it would introduce a measure for such accountability in the next meeting of the Central Council.
The Front's statement said that our people's sacrifices and our revolution will not be sacrificed on the altar of the so-called "peace process" and "negotiations" which have been bankrupt since their inception and are nothing more than a cover for the schemes of the occupation, demanding instead that all act in the interests of our people and reject these policies of dependency and subjugation.

US says Israeli bond 'unshakeable'
March 17, 2010 - The US has affirmed its "unshakeable" and "unbreakable" bond with Israel amid the allies' most public spat in years over Israel's announcement that it would build 1,600 new settler homes. "We have an absolute commitment to Israel's security. We have a close, unshakeable bond between the United States and Israel," Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, said in Washington on Tuesday...

Israel Strikes In Gaza After Deadly Rocket
GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli aircraft struck two targets in the Gaza Strip on Friday a day after a rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave killed a Thai worker in Israel. The Israeli military had no immediate comment. Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom had said Israel would make a strong response to what was the first deadly rocket fire from Hamas-ruled Gaza at Israel in more than a year... http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2010/03/18/world/international-uk-palesti...

Gaza rocket kills Thai farm worker in Israel:
Palestinian militants fired a rocket at Israel from the Gaza Strip Thursday, killing a Thai farm worker ... Israel's military said it was the third rocket fired from Gaza in a 12-hour stretch... Israeli medics said, the first death from such an attack since the Gaza offensive last year.... the same day as a visit to Gaza by Europe's top diplomat, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who had just crossed into the territory when the rocket was fired. "I condemn any kind of violence. We have got to find a peaceful solution to the issues and problems," she said. Ashton is the most senior international official to visit Gaza in more than a year. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the attack. "All such acts of terror and violence against civilians are totally unacceptable and contrary to international law," he said in a statement. After her Gaza visit, Ashton is to attend a major Mideast meeting of the so-called Quartet of Mideast mediators — the United States, the United Nations, Europe and Russia — in Moscow on Friday. The Quartet was to have given its blessing to indirect negotiations between Israelis and the moderate Palestinian government in the West Bank. Talks were put off after Israel announced new housing for Jews in east Jerusalem, setting of a diplomatic crisis with the U.S....
Ashton was touring Gaza to get a firsthand look at the hardships caused by the war and by a punishing Israeli-Egyptian border blockade that has been in place since Hamas' violent take over of Gaza in 2007.... Tens of thousands of foreign laborers work in construction, agriculture and other menial jobs in Israel. In many cases, foreign workers have replaced Palestinian laborers from Gaza, who are no longer allowed to enter Israel...Thousands of homes were razed or damaged during Israel's offensive ... killing 1,400 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians.Thirteen Israelis.... but reconstruction is on hold because building supplies cannot reach Gaza. The West also shuns Gaza's Islamic militant rulers as terrorists, while Hamas refuses to renounce violence and recognize Israel to win acceptance.
Ashton did not meet with Hamas officials.

Pentagon P20G Plan to Provoke Terrorist Attacks

USraeli zionist imperialism's 'unshakeable' unity essential to mutually beneficial u.s. global supremacy/'eretz israel'
For Israel and America, a Disagreement, Not a Crisis
OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR Ambassador Michael B. Oren
Consistently, Israelis have demonstrated remarkable flexibility as well as generosity to any Arab leader genuinely offering peace....Unfortunately, Palestinian leaders have balked at face-to-face negotiations, insisting on new preconditions, including the annulment of Israel’s Jerusalem policy. Recently they have encouraged violent demonstrations in the Old City, and have named a square in the West Bank city of Ramallah in honor of Dalal Mughrabi, a terrorist who in 1978 killed 38 Israeli civilians, among them 13 children, and an American photographer, Gail Rubin. Israel expects the Palestinians to stop such incitement and to cease sponsoring attacks against Israel’s legitimacy, like the deeply slanted Goldstone report on the Gaza war.
Despite these Palestinian actions, Israel wants to begin “proximity talks” — indirect negotiations involving United States intermediaries — which we hope will lead to a direct dialogue and a historic and permanent peace. But the only way to negotiate a peace agreement is to begin negotiations.
To achieve peace, Israel is asked to take monumental risks, including sacrificing land next to our major industrial areas and cities. Previous withdrawals, from Lebanon and Gaza, brought not peace but rather thousands of rockets raining down on our neighborhoods.
Though Israel will always ultimately rely on the courage of its own defense forces, America’s commitment to Israel’s security is essential to give Israelis the confidence to take risks for peace. Similarly, American-Israeli cooperation is vital to meeting the direst challenge facing both countries and the entire world: denying nuclear weapons to Iran.
Israel appreciates President Obama’s commitment to a comprehensive peace that guarantees Israel’s security and Jewish identity, and provides for a Palestinian state. To ensure that such a state is peaceful, Prime Minister Netanyahu has said that it must be demilitarized and that Palestinians must recognize Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people, just as Israel is asked to recognize a future Palestinian state as the nation-state of the Palestinians.
Though we may disagree with the White House at certain stages of the peace process, we must never allow such differences to obscure the purpose we share or to raise doubts about the unbreakable bonds between us.
During his visit, Vice President Biden declared that support for Israel is “a fundamental national self-interest on the part of the United States” and that America “has no better friend in the community of nations than Israel.” The people of Israel, in turn, view the strengthening of their relations with the United States as a paramount national objective. Because we share fundamental values — democracy, respect for individual rights and the rule of law — our friendship can sustain occasional disagreements, and remain unassailably solid.

The Iran Threat in the Age of Real-Axis-of-Evil Expansion1
by Edward S. Herman and David Peterson
MRZine, March 16, 2010
Concluding Note
The real threat that Iran poses to the United States and Israel is that of a local rival to Israel which might hamper Israel's dispossession and expansion program in the Palestinian Territories, as well as U.S. domination of this region of the world. From a global viewpoint, the real threat is that Iran's independence and refusal to grovel might lead to a war of aggression against it by Israel and/or the United States, and such a war could in turn spark an even larger conflagration. However, the nature of this latter threat is such that it can not be addressed by the "international community," which consistently defers to the power and demands of the Real Axis-of-Evil, as do the United Nations, the Security Council, and the IAEA.
That Iran poses an offensive threat to Israel or the United States is obviously a sick joke. Both Israel and the United States possess operational nuclear weapons and superior conventional forces -- and while they can attack Iran without facing unbearable retaliation, Iran cannot do the same and couldn't even do so if it developed a small arsenal of nuclear weapons. But if Iran did posses a small nuclear arsenal, it would be better able to defend itself, and Israel and the United States would have to be act more cautiously -- their own regular cross-border attacks would have to be considered more carefully, and might be effectively deterred. Their longstanding domination of the Middle East, with its "stupendous source of strategic power, one of the greatest material prizes in world history,"38 would be threatened. Thus Iran has no right of self-defense, let alone deterrence.

In short, while nuclear-armed Israel and its patron commit aggression, dispossess, and threaten more of the same, they have managed to transform nuclear-weapons-free Iran into the "threat" that the UN and IC worry about. The IAEA has never established that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons,39 and Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei continues to reject the acquisition and use of nuclear weapons as contrary to the religious beliefs of the Islamic Republic.40 Yet the mere possibility that Iran might switch its nuclear program to a military dimension, along with a lot of rhetorical heat from the West, have provided the basis for organizing a sanctions regime and potential U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran. It has even provided a rationale for the installation of missile and anti-missile systems on the periphery of Russia and China, allegedly to counter the Iran menace! This is the triumph of chutzpah once again, as the Real Axis-of-Evil clears the ground for its ongoing programs of local dispossession and global expansion.

QDR: New U.S. Air-Sea Battle Plan Focuses On China, Iran

"This is truly a wartime QDR"
China, Iran Prompt U.S. Air-Sea Battle Plan in Strategy Review
By Viola Gienger and Tony Capaccio
Bloomberg News, 2-1-10
The U.S. military is drawing up a new air-sea battle plan in response to threats such as China's persistent military build-up and Iran's possession of advanced weapons, according to the Pentagon's latest strategy review. The Air Force and Navy are seeking more effective ways of ensuring continued access to the western Pacific...according to the Quadrennial Defense Review to be released later today. The joint Air Force-Navy plan would combine the strengths of each service to conduct long-range strikes that could utilize a new generation of bombers, a new cruise missile and drones launched from aircraft carriers. The Navy also is increasing funding to develop an unmanned underwater vehicle, according to the report. The battle plan is among a range of new initiatives outlined in the review, which is conducted every four years to revise U.S. military strategy for the coming decade or more. The new report places top priority on the fights in Afghanistan and Iraq and against terrorist threats elsewhere, while also preparing for future threats.
-"This is truly a wartime QDR" Defense Secretary Robert Gates wrote in a cover letter for the report.
-"In the mid- to long-term, U.S. military forces must plan and prepare to prevail in a broad range of operations that may occur in multiple theaters in overlapping time frames"€
"This includes maintaining the ability to prevail against two capable nation-state aggressors."
-[T]he review calls for "a more widely distributed" and flexible U.S. presence in Asia that relies more on allies. Partners would include Australia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.
-The Pentagon has about 400,000 U.S. military personnel stationed overseas, either in war zones or elsewhere. The review emphasizes "taking care of our people" serving in multiple long deployments that take a "significant toll" on them and their families....

China calls U.S. a hypocrite over human rights
BEIJING (Reuters) – China accused Washington of hypocrisy for its criticism of Beijing's restrictions on the Internet and dissent, blaming the United States for the financial crisis and saying its own rights record was terrible. In its annual survey of human rights in 194 countries issued on Thursday, the U.S. State Department criticized China, along with Cuba, Myanmar, North Korea and Russia.
China's State Council Information Office, or cabinet spokesman's office, issued its own annual assessment of the United States' human rights record in response, and this year it dwelt on America's economic woes. "The United States not only has a terrible domestic human rights record, it is also the main source of many human rights disasters worldwide," the Chinese report said, according to the official Xinhua news agency. "Especially a time when the world is suffering serious human rights disasters caused by the global financial crisis sparked by the U.S. sub-prime crisis, the U.S. government has ignored its own grave human rights problems and reveled in accusing other countries."
Washington has long criticized of China on human rights, and the subject has added to recent tensions with Beijing, which has also pushed back over arms sales to Taiwan and President Barack Obama's meeting with the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan leader..
China's Foreign Ministry, in a separate statement, also condemned U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi for comments earlier this week honoring "the many brave Tibetans who have sacrificed their lives fighting for freedom." "We advise the relevant U.S. congresswoman to respect the facts, abandon her prejudices and stop using the Tibet issue to interfere in China's internal affairs," spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement on the ministry's website (http://www.fmprc.gov.cn)....The latest Chinese counter-blast to U.S. criticisms said Washington should concentrate on "improving its own human rights."

America’s Secret Prisons
by Stephen Lendman / March 17th, 2010
January 28 Anand Gopal's " Obama’s Secret Prisons: Night Raids, Hidden Detention Centers, the “Black Jail and the Dogs of War in Afghanistan" was headlined in TomDispatch.com, recounting unreported US media stories about killings, abductions, detentions, interrogations, and torture in “a series of prisons on US military bases around the country.” Bagram prison, for example, is “a facility with a notorious reputation for abusive behavior,” including brutalizing torture and cold-blooded murder...“Sometimes we detain people, then, when the 96 hours are up, we transfer them to the Afghans...They rough them up a bit for us and then send them back to us for another 96 hours. This keeps going until we get what we want.” A simpler way of dancing around the rules is to call in the U.S. Special Operations Forces -- the Navy SEALS, Green Berets, and others - not under NATO command and so not bound by the stricter rules of engagement.... the “Black Jail,” a facility consisting of individual windowless concrete cells with bright 24-hour lighting, described by one former detainee as “the most dangerous and fearful place” in which prisoners endure appalling treatment.
The pattern is predictable. US/NATO convoys are attacked or reports of Taliban forces are received. Americans respond accordingly, rounding up suspects, mostly innocent civilians, and detaining them for interrogations, torture, abuse and degrading treatment – not just in Afghanistan but in secret 'black sites' globally, according to a January 26 UN Human Rights Council (HRC) report detailing practices engaged in by various countries including America, by far the world’s worst offender in its war on terror — waged against humanity for unchallengeable power and total global dominance.
Besides Guantanamo, Afghanistan and Iraq, HRC said the CIA runs scores of offshore secret prisons in over 66 countries worldwide for dissidents and alleged terrorists — in Egypt, Algeria, Jordan, Morocco, Syria, Libya, Tunisia, India, Pakistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Ethopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Poland, Romania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Thailand, Diego Garcia, and elsewhere....

US torture deleted from 'news' - now it's back to 'interviewing detainees'
U.S. troops will now get more time to interview Afghan detainees.
U.S. ends 96-hour rule for Afghan detainees
Critics argued the 96-hour rule puts soldiers in danger
Washington (CNN) -- A controversial policy that gives U.S. forces in Afghanistan four days to question detainees is being changed to give soldiers more time to interrogate the captives, Gen. David Petraeus said Tuesday. Petraeus said in January that particularly when it comes to high-value targets, "96 hours is not enough if you are going to ensure that they stay behind bars."... Petraeus told the Senate Armed Services Committee that American troops will now be able to hold detainees for up to 14 days before either releasing them or turning them over to the Afghan government. In some cases, longer detention will be an option, he said. Currently, U.S. troops have 96 hours to question people picked up in the field before they must either release them or hand them over to Afghan authorities. The rule is designed to give the Afghan government control over detainees and avoid abuses....Nearly half of all U.S. troops in Afghanistan operate under NATO rules and fight as the International Security Assistance Force. CNN confirmed Tuesday that the remainder are also being put under NATO, meaning the new 14-day policy will apply to everyone... U.S. Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale, an International Security Assistance Force spokesman, confirmed about 30,000 troops are being transitioned to the assistance force and all will operate under the new rule.

Covert troops who killed two pregnant women and a teenage girl in eastern Afghanistan went on to inflict “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment” on the survivors of a botched night raid, a report by the UN said....American special forces"... Afghan troops were using American rifles and wore patches on their sleeves with the local phrase for Nato’s International Security Assistance Force. The Americans were wearing “wood yellow” clothes.... different from regular army’s green uniforms....

Taliban Hit Back in Marja With a Campaign of Intimidation
KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban have begun waging a campaign of intimidation in Marja that some local Afghan leaders worry has jeopardized the success of an American-led offensive there meant as an early test of a revised military approach in Afghanistan... in a broader effort to terrorize residents and undermine what military officials have said is the most important aim of the offensive: the attempt to establish a strong local government that can restore services... More than 6,000 American soldiers, Marines and British soldiers fought their way into Marja beginning Feb. 13, along with thousands of Afghan troops and police officers. Many others have reinforced the occupation since to protect an influx of Afghan officials and Western experts to build an effective government in Marja. That effort to win over the local populace is at the heart of the American and Afghan government strategy, and NATO officials have said it is proceeding well...
Journalists have still not been allowed to visit Marja independently, however; they must be embedded with the American military. Marja is meant to be a template for a similar campaign aimed for spring in neighboring Kandahar Province, the Taliban’s heartland. Though Marja has an occupation force numbering more than one coalition soldier or police officer for every eight residents, Taliban agitators have been able to wage an underground campaign of subversion, which residents say has intensified in the past two weeks. “After dark the city is like the kingdom of the Taliban,” said a tribal elder living in Marja, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of the Taliban. “The government and international forces cannot defend anyone even one kilometer from their bases.”... The tribal elder declared that in his area, called Block 5, the Taliban had complete freedom of movement after dark. He said he believed that was true in many other parts of the city as well. He and the governor were among five community leaders in Marja who expressed similar concerns about the Taliban intimidation campaign...
The new governor of Marja, Haji Abdul Zahir... said the militants were now holding meetings in randomly selected homes roughly every other night, gathering residents together and demanding that they turn over the names of anyone cooperating with the authorities... "they still have a lot of sympathy among the people.” Mr. Zahir said the Taliban also regularly issued “night letters,” posted at mosques or on utility poles, warning against such collaboration, and often intimidated residents into providing them with shelter and food, even in densely populated neighborhoods of the city, which has a population of 80,000....

Afghanistan resistance escalates as US forces prepare Kandahar assault
By Patrick O’Connor WSWS, 17 March 2010
In the recently captured area of Marjah reports have emerged of US forces and their Afghan proxies confronting a hostile population. "We are in a very critical situation right now," an unnamed US military advisor attached to Afghan security forces in Marjah told Stars and Stripes. "The Taliban are reorganising. The capability they lost two weeks ago is coming back." ...Sharp tactical divisions are emerging within military and official foreign policy circles over how to proceed....
Describing Marjah as a "strategically meaningless village"[In] Foreign Policy magazine Thomas H. Johnson, director of the Program for Culture and Conflict Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School, and M. Chris Mason, a senior fellow at the Center for Advanced Defense Studies... insisted "taking this nearly worthless postage stamp of real estate has tied down about half of all the real combat power and aviation assets of the international coalition in Afghanistan for a quarter of a year". Johnson and Mason derided US plans in Marjah as efforts to "establish an Afghan Potemkin village", and concluded that the operation was "essentially a giant public affairs exercise, designed to shore up dwindling domestic support for the war by creating an illusion of progress"...
The Afghanistan war was aimed from the outset at securing US domination in the strategically and economically vital Central Asian region. Defeat would open the door to rival powers in Europe and Asia and represent a major blow to Washington’s efforts to maintain its global dominance. The Obama administration has responded by preparing a massive show of force, including, if necessary, unleashing devastation on Kandahar on a scale similar to that inflicted on the Iraqi city of Fallujah in late 2004....
...Helmand and Kandahar provinces, on Afghanistan’s south-western border with Pakistan, remain the focus of Washington’s military escalation...US military commanders are waiting for the remainder of the 30,000 additional troops deployed by President Barack Obama before launching a summer offensive in Afghanistan’s second largest city, Kandahar... US puppet President Hamid Karzai and his assorted coalition of ex-warlords, drug traffickers, and mafia types have little authority beyond the capital, Kabul, and even there anti-occupation forces now operate with increasing confidence.... Afghan civilians remain the primary victims of Obama’s criminal war of occupation. Massive air strikes continue to inflict enormous damage on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border...

Kandahar campaign already underway, general says
Reuters March 17, 2010
-Preliminary U.S. efforts to gradually retake full control of the Taliban's birthplace Kandahar are already underway, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan said on Wednesday, offering few details. The campaign in Kandahar, Afghanistan's second-largest city, is seen as a crucial test of President Barack Obama's strategy to reverse Taliban momentum after more than eight years of war. General Stanley McChrystal says he envisions gradual operations to deliver security and governance, as opposed to one big military assault. That has raised questions about how to identify the new campaign in Kandahar and its surroundings, where NATO already has thousands of forces...

Thank the Occupation
Oh, Those "Disappointing" Iraqis
By Yifat Susskind
March 17, 2010 - It may be months before we know the final tally of Iraq’s March 7 parliamentary elections. But one thing is already clear. As The New York Times editorial page put it today, "Beyond the closeness of the race, the new results—disappointingly—show Iraqis once again voted mainly along sectarian and ethnic lines." Oh, those disappointing Iraqis. You would never guess from the Times piece that sectarianism in Iraq, whether expressed in voting or in violence, is a direct outcome of US policy. Remarkably, in a country with almost no history of communal violence, US actions, from the invasion of 2003 to the present, helped transform a doctrinal difference between the Sunni and Shiite branches of Islam into a dangerous political divide. The US dismantled Iraq's largely secular state bureaucracy in favor of a system that allocated seats in parliament, jobs and other resources according to ethnic and religious divisions. That system produced the so–called "Shiite list" that swept the first national elections held under US occupation in January 2005. It also produced a civil war. In the name of defeating the anti-US insurgency, the Pentagon armed and deployed openly sectarian Shiite and Kurdish militias to fight Sunnis and police Sunni neighborhoods... After setting the stage for civil war, the US continued to fuel violence by giving one side—the Sunni–based insurgency—its raison d'être, while giving the other side—the Shiite-controlled state security forces—money, weapons, and training. By 2007, the US was arming both sides....the US forced Iraqis to compete for scarce resources on the basis of sectarian identity and reoriented Iraqi citizenship on the basis of religion instead of nationality... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=64283

US fascist state expanding its net in the face of global defeats and growing public anger: from bin laden and zarqawi to 'jihad jane' and other predicted 'homegrown' caucasian "terrorists"
Targeting the “US Home Audience”
by Sunil K. Sharma
...The Bush Administration has desperately tried to portray the Iraqi resistance as being to a significant extent a tool of “foreign” jihadists like Zarqawi, rather than the inevitable and legitimate, overwhelmingly homegrown resistance to US occupation and brutality that it in fact is. As one US intelligence agent commented: “We were basically paying up to $US10,000 a time to opportunists, criminals and chancers who passed off fiction and supposition about Zarqawi as cast-iron fact, making him out as the linchpin of just about every attack in Iraq.” “Back home this stuff was gratefully received and formed the basis of policy decisions. We needed a villain, someone identifiable for the public to latch on to, and we got one.”
Indeed, as the Washington Post reported on April 11, 2006, based on military documents it obtained, the US military had conducted a “propaganda campaign to magnify the role” of Zarqawi in Iraq. “The documents explicitly list the ‘U.S. Home Audience’ as one of the targets of a broader propaganda campaign.” The Post went on to report that, “The effort has raised his profile in a way that some military intelligence officials believe may have overstated his importance and helped the Bush administration tie the war to the organization responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.” One military briefing from 2004 cited by the Post states: “Villainize Zarqawi/leverage xenophobia response.” The document listed three methods to be employed in this campaign: “Media operations,” “Special Ops (626)” (referring to Task Force 626, an elite US military unit assigned primarily to hunt down senior officials in Saddam Hussein's government) and “PSYOP”, the military term for propaganda work. Another briefing states that the “The Zarqawi PSYOP program is the most successful information campaign to date,” in the view of Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, now a senior planner on the Central Command staff directing operations in Iraq and the Middle East.[...]

Russian invasion scare sweeps Georgia after TV hoax
Imedi TV broadcast report claiming Russian attack in progress provokes panic
Switching on their TV sets at 8pm on Saturday, Georgians were greeted with incredible news – Russia had invaded. The pro-government Imedi TV station reported that Russian tanks were once more trundling into Georgia. Not only that, but the country's pro-western leader Mikheil Saakashvili had been murdered, the station said. For the next half an hour there were scenes of absolute panic, as the mobile network collapsed, Georgians spilled on to the streets, and friends and relatives desperately tried to reach each other and seek out information...
Saakashvili was unapologetic. He declared that the threat of Russian attack remained "very realistic"... Few observers, however, expect Russia to launch another attack since it achieved most of its geopolitical goals last time. They included thwarting Georgia's attempts to join Nato, humiliating Saakashvili and – by proxy – his backers in the US, and avenging the west's decision to recognise Kosovo... Saakashvili insists his South Ossetian offensive was a desperate response to a long-planned and already under way Russian assault. Georgia's opposition accuses Saakashvili of criminal recklessness...that since coming to power in the 2003 Rose revolution Saakashvili has turned from liberal reformer to nationalist autocrat... Russia's envoy to Nato, Dmitry Rogozin, dubbed it "criminal", and said the western military alliance should have nothing to do with Georgia's erratic president...
It is no coincidence that Imedi TV's extraordinary broadcast came days after Georgia's opposition leader, Nino Burdzhanadze, held talks in Moscow with Putin, and called for the restoration of ties. Announcing that Russia had bombed Georgian airports and seaports, the 30-minute bulletin said that Burdzhanadze had taken power. The broadcast appears to be an ill-conceived dig at Georgia's opposition, before important elections for a mayor of Tbilisi in late May...
Imedi TV used to be Georgian's main independent TV station. Saakashvili, however, took the channel off the air after falling out with its owner, the oligarch and opposition presidential candidate Badri Patarkatsishvili. After Patarkatsishvili's death in exile in England in 2008, Sakaashvili handed the station over to a government supporter. It now regularly screens [provides] pro-government opinion.

[US] Georgia vs Russia: Fanning the flames
Eric Walberg
US encouragement for Saakashvili in his failed 2008 war with Russia was an embarrassment for the US...Despite the likelihood that Saakashvili’s extreme pro-West policies will be reversed by a future government, the US navy is conducting war exercises at this very moment with Georgia in the Black Sea, and the Pentagon is preparing to build three military bases in Georgia and dispatch of up to 25,000 US servicemen to the country by 2015. It seems the embarrassment is also a "window of opportunity", a chance to put facts on the ground which a future government would find very difficult to change.... US special envoy to AfPak Richard Holbrooke just last week visited Georgia to arrange transit of arms to his killing fields via Georgia. Saakashvili offered Georgia’s Black Sea ports Poti and Batumi as docks for military supply ships and the country’s airports as refuelling points for cargo planes. "The route to Afghanistan is already used extensively, because almost 80 per cent of cargo which is not going through Pakistan is going through Georgia, and only 20 per cent through Russia," boasts Alexander Rondeli, president of the Georgian Foundation for Security in International Studies. Saakashvili is pursuing a propaganda campaign aiming to destabilise the region through direct and indirect provocation of Russia and support of terrorists with the tacit approval of Washington and Brussels. He has launched a Russian-language TV station First Caucasus beamed into South Ossetia, much like Reagan’s TV Marti set up in 1985 for Cubans. He has also reached out to Abkhazians and Ossetians to try to convince them to subvert their current governments and join Georgia. The idea, according to analyst at the Strategic Cultural Foundation Nicolai Dimlevich, is to foment instability throughout the Caucasus and in Transcaucasia and then call for all the zones of conflict to be passed into UN, EU and/or NATO hands for safekeeping, since Russia would be proven to be incapable of ensuring the security of local populations. In this scenario, the US and NATO "benefit" from war in the region, as it is an opportunity to weaken Russia and extend control over the region... When Saakashvili goes, a similar move will surely take place in Georgia, as a future president tries to repair relations with Russia, though -- hopes the Pentagon -- leaving by-then existing US bases in place.

Death at the Bridge in New Orleans
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
“The cops converged on the Danziger Bridge, apparently in search of Black people to kill.”
When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in September, 2005, it unleashed a tidal wave of police violence against that city’s Black citizens. One particularly vicious gang of at least seven cops converged on the Danziger Bridge over the Industrial Canal, apparently in search of Black people to kill during the post-storm confusion. The officers encountered an unarmed family of five [1] and a friend walking across the bridge on their way to a supermarket and opened fire on them, seriously wounding four and killing one. Then the cops went to the other side of the bridge and came upon two brothers on their way to a family member’s dental office. The cops killed one of the brothers, who was mentally disabled. When they were finally finished shooting, the cops put their criminal minds together to concoct a cover story and plant a weapon on the scene.
Last week, a police lieutenant pleaded guilty to his role in covering up the police rampage. The federal conspiracy charges only carry a maximum five-year prison term and $250,000 fine. The seven officers involved in the shootings were all originally indicted on state murder and attempted murder charges, back in 2006. But a judge found that prosecutors had acted improperly in preparing the evidence, and threw out the case, leaving further action up to federal authorities.
Now the five-year statute of limitations is due to expire in August or September for the Danziger Bridge shootings and at least five other cases of New Orleans cops running amok. One involves the death of a Black man four days after Katrina [2] hit. The victim, Henry Glover, was shot, probably by police. Later, Glover's friends sought medical assistance from a group of cops, who set upon the Black men, beat them, then drove off in Glover's car with the wounded man in it. Weeks later, Glover's car and body were discovered, incinerated near a levy in the Algiers section of New Orleans.

Cover-up exposed in post-Katrina police killings
Patrick Martin
March 6, 2010 - A New Orleans police supervisor pled guilty February 24 in a federal court to charges of conspiracy to cover up the police shooting of six unarmed people a few days after Hurricane Katrina struck the city. Two of the victims, Ronald Madison, a 40-year-old mentally disabled man, and James Brissette, 19, were killed, while the other four were seriously wounded, one losing part of her arm. Police lieutenant Michael Lohman, who just retired from t he force at age 42, admitted taking the lead in efforts to manufacture evidence the police shooting was legitimate. He described events of that day in detail in sworn testimony before US District Judge Ivan Lemelle...http://www.uruknet.de/?p=63927

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The biggest U.S. military surge since Iraq and Afghanistan is scaling back a month after the troops arrived in haste to aid victims of Haiti's catastrophic quake. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the U.S. will be in Haiti for the long haul, although troop strength is down to 13,000 from a Feb. 1 peak of 20,000....
"The foreign countries... fell victim to their own propaganda," said Patrick Elie, a former Haitian defense minister..."They were afraid of a monster that never existed except in their own fantasies ... that Haitians are bloodthirsty savages."

Pope to start 'healing process' in Ireland
March 17, 2010
Pope Benedict XVI said today that he was about to sign his long-awaited letter to bishops in Ireland about the sex abuse crisis, which he hoped would help the process of "repentance, healing and renewal"... he will send a letter to Irish bishops this week addressing the 'heinous crime' of sex abuse... Last month he summoned Ireland's bishops to Rome for talks on the crisis, calling sexual abuse of minors a "grave sin" and a "heinous crime". The Pope, 82, made no mention of clerical abuse scandals rocking the church elsewhere in Europe, including his native Germany... Benedict is also under fire for a 2001 church directive he issued while head of doctrine at the Vatican, instructing bishops to keep abuse cases confidential....Last weekend the Vatican denounced "aggressive attempts" to draw Pope Benedict into the spreading scandal in his German homeland, saying suggestions of a papal cover up were "false and defamatory"....some German Catholic groups have hit out at what they say is the Pope's silence. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State and the Pope's deputy, said today in L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, that the spiralling clerical sex abuse scandal was being used to undermine the Church...

Pope to give 'moral guidance' during UK visit
March 17, 2010
Leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Britain attempted to distance the Pope from the sex abuse scandal engulfing the institution, instead pledging that Benedict XVI will “give guidance on the great moral issues of our day” when he visits Britain in September.... The subdued press conference at the Foreign Office in London today came as the row over paedophile priests continued to bedevil the Church. It emerged that the German priest abuser, whose case has dragged Pope Benedict XVI into the scandal, was only suspended from the ministry this week.... “The priest at the center of a German sexual-abuse scandal that has embroiled Pope Benedict XVI continued working with children for more than 30 years, even though a German court convicted him of molesting boys.... then Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger, responded ...tby allowing the priest to move to Munich for therapy in 1980.”...
today the United Nations Human Rights Council executive director Keith Porteous Wood said: “The Vatican is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, but has contravened several of its articles, and is more than 10 years behind in its reporting. It has habitually compounded the abuse and facilitated multiple reoffending by moving offenders around and shielding them from prosecuting authorities.” He said major investigations in the US and Ireland had been “deliberately and cynically obstructed” by the Church at all levels without censure from above....
Terry Sanderson, president of the National Secular Society, said: “At a time when the Pope is swirling in a very unpleasant scandal of his own making, the Government chooses to announce that it is to spend a huge amount of money on lauding him. To do this now makes it appear that we don't care about the Vatican's crimes against children. “The Church over which the Pope is presiding is embroiled internationally in a series of revelations that show it to be institutionally corrupt. It has systematically covered up the horrendous abuse of children by its priests, protecting its own interests at the cost of the health and well-being of thousands — maybe tens of thousands — of vulnerable children...I cannot believe that we are lauding the head of an organisation that... insults and denigrates homosexuals, tries to restrict the rights of women by banning contraception and abortion..The Government should be sharply criticising rather than welcoming this man.” ...
A new campaign group has been formed called Protest the Pope which is to organise demonstrations and other events around the time of the visit. Last week the society handed over a 28,000 name petition to the Prime Minister objecting to the state funding of the visit.

Chief exorcist says Devil is in Vatican
March 11, 2010
The Devil is lurking in the very heart of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican's chief exorcist claimed on Wednesday. Father Gabriele Amorth said people who are possessed by Satan vomit shards of glass and pieces of iron. He added that the assault on Pope Benedict XVI on Christmas Eve by a mentally unstable woman and the sex abuse scandals which have engulfed the Church in the US, Ireland, Germany and other countries, were proof that the Anti-Christ was waging a war against the Holy See. "The Devil resides in the Vatican and you can see the consequences," said Father Amorth, 85, who has been the Holy See's chief exorcist for 25 years. While there was "resistance and mistrust" towards the concept of exorcism among some Catholics, Pope Benedict XVI has no such doubts, Father Amorth said. "His Holiness believes wholeheartedly in the practice of exorcism. He has encouraged and praised our work," he added. In a rare insight into the world of exorcism, the Italian priest told La Repubblica newspaper that the 1973 film The Exorcist gave a "substantially exact" impression of what it was like to be possessed by the Devil.

Defectors Say Church of Scientology Hides Abuse
Raised as Scientologists, Christie King Collbran and her husband, Chris, were recruited as teenagers to work for the elite corps of staff members who keep the Church of Scientology running, known as the Sea Organization, or Sea Org. They signed a contract for a billion years — in keeping with the church’s belief that Scientologists are immortal. They worked seven days a week, often on little sleep, for sporadic paychecks of $50 a week, at most. But after 13 years and growing disillusionment, the Collbrans decided to leave the Sea Org, setting off on a Kafkaesque journey that they said required them to sign false confessions about their personal lives and their work, pay the church thousands of dollars it said they owed for courses and counseling, and accept the consequences as their parents, siblings and friends who are church members cut off all communication with them. They soon discovered others who felt the same. Searching for Web sites about Scientology that are not sponsored by the church (an activity prohibited when they were in the Sea Org), they discovered that hundreds of other Scientologists were also defecting — including high-ranking executives who had served for decades.

Utah Governor Signs Controversial Law Charging Women and Girls With Murder for Miscarriages
by Rose Aguilar
On Monday afternoon, a controversial Utah bill that charges pregnant women and girls with murder for having miscarriages caused by “intentional or knowing” acts, was signed into law by Gov. Gary Herbert... Its sponsor Rep. Carl Wimmer, a conservative Christian, makes no attempt to hide his anti-choice agenda.. as chairman of the Utah Family Action Council, “we are continually working to pass pro-life legislation which will weaken Roe v. Wade. Abortions should be reserved for extreme cases only.” ...according to his website...
“Even without this legislation, I wouldn’t say throwing women in jail for having miscarriages is outside the realm of possibility,” says the Utah ACLU’s Marina Lowe. “The larger issue is whether or not our young people have access to information and services, especially people in remote parts of the state.” ...

9/11 Commission Warned About ‘Line’ It ’Should Not Cross’ in 911 investigation:ACLU document
By Sahil Kapur http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article25008.htm

The 'planners' of 9/11 were not a group of young men, totally inexperienced in flying airliners, and so absolutely brilliant as to get by NORAD and the entire US defense system in four separate plane. Let's get real. The 9/11 Truth Movement is finally getting its evidence and vital questions to the public, and stories such as this "Gay Terrorist" are leaked to news sources to counter and discredit facts that have been uncovered. If you want to understand how this plays into the hands of those who were really behind the attacks, who have suppressed any discussion of the truth, tune in tonight (3/17) to TVNL Radio Live. Jesse Richard, editor of http://tvnewslies.org will interview a member of Firefighters for 9/11 Truth. Listen to their stories. The same show featured the founder or Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth a few weeks back, and on the 31st of this month David Ray Griffin will be a guest. Griffin has written extensively on the subject, - notably a book listing the omissions and lies of the 9/11 Commission Report. It's time to distinguish between propaganda and fact. Believing anything the CIA has to say is a fool's errand.
