4/24 The Many Faces and Fronts of Collateral Murder in US Global Class War, part 1

What We Learned in Oklahoma City 2005
...we should never forget what drove the bombers, and how they justified their actions to themselves. They took to the ultimate extreme an idea advocated in the months and years before the bombing by an increasingly vocal minority: the belief that the greatest threat to American freedom is our government, and that public servants do not protect our freedoms, but abuse them...
Americans have more freedom and broader rights than citizens of almost any other nation in the world, including the capacity to criticize their government and their elected officials. But we do not have the right to resort to violence — or the threat of violence — when we don’t get our way. Our founders constructed a system of government so that reason could prevail over fear. Oklahoma City proved once again that without the law there is no freedom....we should remember there is a big difference between criticizing a policy or a politician and demonizing the government that guarantees our freedoms and the public servants who enforce our laws.

Bill Clinton Personally Orchestrated Waco
Timothy McVeigh said the Okla. City bombing was reaction to the Waco massacre Bill Clinton orchestrated... update the 1993 Waco Siege page on Wikipedia... In response to Bill Clinton’s highly publicized linking of the Tea Party movement to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing in an op-ed piece for the New York Times, former Clinton adviser Dick Morris disclosed that it was Clinton himself, not Attorney General Janet Reno...who called the shots during the 1993 botched invasion that led to the death of seventy-six people.

Bill Clinton on Violence and Government: Lethal Hypocrisy
By James Bovard
Yesterday, on the fifteenth anniversary of the attack on the federal office building in Oklahoma City, former President Bill Clinton had an op-ed in the New York Times headlined: “Violence is Unacceptable in a Democracy.” The article settles any doubts about whether Clinton was one of the most talented demagogues of modern times.
Casting a net of collective guilt over much of the 48 contiguous states, Clinton announced that the 1995 bombing was the fault of people who believed “that the greatest threat to American freedom is our government, and that public servants do not protect our freedoms, but abuse them.” People who distrusted government helped echo ideas which somehow persuaded “deeply alienated and disconnected Americans” to carry out the attack. In other words, people who harshly criticize the government are guilty of - or at least complicit in - mass murder. It would be difficult to contrive a storyline to better exonerate all government actions....

Confirmed: Obama authorizes assassination of U.S. citizen
Glenn Greenwald
April 7, 2010 - In late January, I wrote about the Obama administration's "presidential assassination program," whereby American citizens are targeted for killings far away from any battlefield, based exclusively on unchecked accusations by the Executive Branch that they're involved in Terrorism. At the time, The Washington Post's Dana Priest had noted deep in a long article that Obama had continued Bush's policy (which Bush never actually implemented) of having the Joint Chiefs of Staff compile "hit lists" of Americans, and Priest suggested that the American-born Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was on that list. The following week, Obama's Director of National Intelligence, Adm. Dennis Blair, acknowledged in Congressional testimony that the administration reserves the "right" to carry out such assassinations...http://www.uruknet.de/?p=64892

More than 200 former congressional staff members, federal regulators and lawmakers are employed by the mining industry as lobbyists, consultants or senior executives, including dozens who work for coal companies with the worst safety records in the nation, a Washington Post analysis shows.

Mine avoided harsh penalties despite violations
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration has ordered the evacuation of miners from parts of the Upper Big Branch coal mine 64 times ... included one for "imminent danger" ...since the beginning of 2009 because of safety violations, but federal regulators said the mine did not show the "pattern of violation" that would have allowed them to take harsher measures. ... There were also problems with the mine's four-mile-long ventilation system. Even though it won the approval of federal regulators last October, it was shown in a test in March to be circulating less than half the volume of air intended to keep levels of combustible coal dust and methane within a safe range....

WITH a profit recovery in full swing — and the first-quarter earnings reporting season under way — the bar on Wall Street is set high. Analysts forecast that profits for companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index soared an average of 39 percent in the first quarter, versus a year earlier. So far, many companies that have reported their results, including JPMorgan Chase and Intel, have had little difficulty clearing Wall Street’s lofty hurdle. But as the earnings season continues, market strategists will be looking at the breadth of the rebound — and how investors react to it in coming weeks.... While the fourth-quarter [profit recovery] growth was spectacular, a vast majority of it came from just one sector: financials....If financial companies in the S.& P. 500 were removed from consideration, overall corporate earnings would have grown 18 percent in the fourth quarter — not the 206 percent officially reported, according to Thomson Reuters.

Poll Finds Tea Party Anger Rooted in Issues of Class
The fierce animosity that Tea Party supporters harbor toward Washington and President Obama in particular is rooted in deep pessimism about the direction of the country and the conviction that the policies of the Obama administration arnd disproportionately directed at helping the poor rather than the middle class or the rich, according to the latest New York Times/CBS poll.
The overwhelming majority of supporters say Mr. Obama does not share the values most Americans live by and that he does not understand the problems of people like themselves. More than half say the policies of the administration favor the poor, and 25 percent think that the administration favors blacks over whites — compared with 11 percent of the general public. They are more likely than the general public, and Republicans, to say that too much has been made of the problems facing black people. http://www.nytimes.com?emc=na

Signaling Jobs Recovery, Payrolls Surged in March
After losing eight million jobs since the recession began in December 2007, payrolls finally surged in March, the Labor Department reported on Friday. Employers added 162,000 nonfarm jobs last month. “We are beginning to turn the corner,” said President Obama, speaking in Charlotte, N.C., calling it “the best news we’ve seen on the job front in more than two years.”
Private-sector job growth was again strongest in temporary help services and health care. The nation added 40,000 temporary service jobs last month, indicating that many employers were testing the waters before taking the plunge with a permanent hire. The health care industry, which grew steadily even during the depths of the recession, expanded by 27,000 jobs in March.
The March report may have been inflated, though, by a rebound from February when many people could not work because of snowstorms. Additionally, nearly a third of the hiring in March was temporary work on the 2010 census.

Why So Glum? Numbers Point to a Recovery
The signs are that the U.S. economic recovery is growing stronger. So why do so many seem not to believe it?

Underemployment In U.S. Rises To 20.3% In March
Payrolls rose by 162,000 workers though the increase included 48,000 temporary Census workers. Record Long-term Unemployed
Nevertheless, behind the rosy headlines, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics give a grim side of the employment picture. The number of long-term unemployed (more than 27 weeks) in March rose to more than 6.5 million. The percentage of people unemployed for 27 weeks or more also rose to a record 44.1% of all jobless... the number of people working part-time because they couldn't find full-time work also increased. The Labor Dept. figures also show average earnings per hour dropped.

Joint Economic Committee Releases New Report on Long-Term Unemployment in the African American Community
Washington, D.C. -- “Understanding the Economy: Long-Term Unemployment in the African American Community” is the first in a series of JEC reports examining the unemployment situation among several demographic groups, including African Americans, Hispanics, youth, and women. Prepared by the JEC’s Majority staff, the report draws from previously unpublished data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and found that though African Americans make up 11.5 percent of the labor force, they account for 17.8 percent of the unemployed, 20.3 percent of those unemployed for more than six months, and 22.1 percent of the workers unemployed for a year or more (see chart below).
Other key report findings include:
From February 2007 to February 2010, unemployment among African American men more than doubled, climbing from 9.0 percent to19.0 percent. Among African American women, unemployment increased from 7.1 percent to 13.1 percent during the same time period. The median duration of unemployment for African American workers also has doubled, increasing from less than three months before the recession began to almost six months in February 2010. Forty-five percent of unemployed African Americans have been out of work for six months or more.
Younger African American workers have faced particularly high rates of unemployment. In February 2010, more than two out of five African American teenagers were unemployed, compared to overall teen unemployment rate of slightly over 25 percent.

U.S.’s Toughest Immigration Law Is Signed in Arizona
Arizona is the first state to demand that immigrants meet federal requirements to carry identity documents legitimizing their presence on American soil...
President Obama strongly criticized it at a naturalization ceremony for 24 active-duty service members...the Arizona law threatened “to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”... an immigration debate could help energize Hispanic voters and provide political benefits to embattled Democrats seeking re-election in November ..... http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/24/us/politics/24immig.html?hp

In March 2010 senators Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, and Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, unveiled the outlines of a reform proposal, which would require illegal immigrants to admit they broke the law before they could gain legal status and require all workers in the United States to carry a biometric identity card to prove that they are eligible to work. President Obama immediately responded with a statement saying it "should be the basis for moving forward" ...

Biometric-Based Employer Verification System Also Proposed As Key Element; Plan Needed To Manage Future Flow Of Legal Immigrants That Can Be Absorbed By Economy

Firm Stance on Illegal Immigrants Remains Policy
After early pledges by President Obama that he would moderate the Bush administration’s tough policy on immigration enforcement, his administration is pursuing an aggressive strategy for an illegal-immigration crackdown that relies significantly on programs started by his predecessor... That approach brings Mr. Obama around to the position that his Republican rival, Senator John McCain of Arizona, espoused during last year’s presidential campaign, a stance Mr. Obama rejected then as too hard on Latino and immigrant communities.... The Obama administration has received support for its immigration position from a leading Democrat, Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, the chairman of the Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, who will be writing an immigration overhaul bill later this year....Mr. Schumer has called on Democrats to show that they are serious about immigration enforcement and is even asking them to stop using the term “undocumented” to refer to immigrants who are here illegally.... to “convince the American people there will not be new waves of illegal immigrants” after an overhaul passes...

...The indictment accuses them of conspiring "to levy war against the United States." Charges include seditious conspiracy, attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence. "The safety of the public and of the law enforcement community demanded intervention at this time," McQuade said. "This is an example of racial and extremist fringe groups which can be found throughout our society," said Andrew Arena, the FBI special agent in charge of the Detroit office. "The FBI takes such extremist groups seriously, especially those who would target innocent citizens and the law enforcement officers who protect the citizens of the United States."...

FBI Agent Had Infiltrated Hutaree
DETROIT, March 31, 2010
Federal officials said they began monitoring the militia last summer and believed an attack was planned for April. Waterstreet said Hutaree was planning training that month where they would kill people that "came upon them." Court documents said the undercover agent and a cooperating witness were part of the federal probe The agent, who infiltrated the Hutaree group and had built explosives under Stone's direction, accompanied Stone and others as they tried to attend a Feb. 6 meeting of militias in Kentucky, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald Waterstreet said during a detention hearing in U.S. District Court in Detroit. "Now it's time to strike and take our nation back so we will be free of tyranny," Stone, 44, of Clayton, Mich., says on the recording played in court. "The war will come whether we are ready or not."

With Washington in Their Gun-Sights
by Mikel Weisser / April 17th, 2010
... I have not come to pillory the Taliban, nor to raze them about some long ago treachery of the past; but to warn of a possible parallel future. Once again strictly religious zealots, socially conservative to an extreme, madly wielding near blasphemous political power are threatening the very symbols of a society, nay, its very way of life. Once again, the stone images of that vision of a better world for mankind, the bedrock of a society, have been carved into a mountainside. Once again the world watches in impotent horror as fanatics attempt to destroy a country’s massive monuments to its sacred ideals...
By now I am sure you’ve realized I am talking about the Tea Party’s relentless efforts to demolish the images on Mount Rushmore — Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington... their various members so frequently call for all liberals, all foreigners, all minorities and all Democrats to be rounded up and exterminated “like vermin” [hyperbole theirs]. That is, indeed, one way to make peace, to kill all your opposition. As biologist and philosopher Jean Rostand (1894-1977) once noted, “Kill a man, and you are an assassin. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill everyone, and you are a god.” And if you are god, you get to set the rules and no dissent is possible: the people can’t argue with god. They can only be sacrificed for his will, or, if heretics, sacrificed to his wrath. And, boy howdy, has the Tea Party been doing their damndest to kill off the legacy this quartet of presidents, men most Americans had loved with a near religious fervor. If only the rest of us understood the treason and treachery of villains we once thought heroes.
Sure, the Tea Party tells us they, not we, see the real America, and feel the only true and worthy patriotic love of country. But after blasting off the faces of 75% of our national patron saints, I worry how patriotic they will actually be come this April 19 with Washington in their gun-sights, when they fire their shot heard around the world.

Al-Qaeda Chief In Iraq: Captured, Killed, Never Existed, Re-Captured, Now Killed Again
Steve Watson
U.S. and Iraqi officials have today announced that two "Al-Qaeda in Iraq" leaders have been killed in an air strike carried out by American troops. A major flaw in the story that seems to have been overlooked, is that both of the men have already been reported captured and killed on several occasions, with U.S. officials also having previously declared one of them a "fictional character" that was invented by the other... almost a year ago to the day, al-Baghdadi was reported captured by Iraqi security forces. His arrest was confirmed by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, the same man now purporting that Baghdadi has been killed in a raid.... Al-Baghdadi was the replacement al-CIA-da boogie man for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, also previously reported captured and killed on several occasions, after al-Zarqawi was laid to rest for good by the PR arm of the Pentagon in 2006....

Military Plays Up Role of Zarqawi
Jordanian Painted As Foreign Threat To Iraq's Stability
April 10, 2006
The U.S. military is conducting a propaganda campaign to magnify the role of the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, according to internal military documents and officers familiar with the program.... in a way that some military intelligence officials believe may have overstated his importance and helped the Bush administration tie the war to the organization responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
The documents state that the U.S. campaign aims to turn Iraqis against Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian, by playing on their perceived dislike of foreigners. U.S. authorities claim some success with that effort, noting that some tribal Iraqi insurgents have attacked Zarqawi loyalists. For the past two years, U.S. military leaders have been using Iraqi media and other outlets in Baghdad to publicize Zarqawi's role in the insurgency. The documents explicitly list the "U.S. Home Audience" as one of the targets of a broader propaganda campaign.

Iraq Al-Qaeda boss Abu Omar al-Baghdadi 'is captured'
April 24, 2009
Iraqi security forces have reported al-Baghdadi’s death and capture on several different occasions in the past, as well as claiming to have captured the man believed to be al-Qaeda’s overall leader in the country, Abu Ayyub al-Masri. Some intelligence sources have denied that either man even exists, claiming that they are fronts either to throw the security forces off the scent or, in the case of al-Baghdadi, to give the terrorist network an Iraqi face... The Pentagon's top Middle East adviser said this week that insurgent attacks are likely to increase as US forces start to leave

Afghan resistance statement : American Colonialist Agenda
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan 19 April 2010
The current war in Afghanistan is in all its shapes and manifestations a liberation struggle by indigenous people against foreign invaders and their internal surrogates. The Afghans have proved their mettle as a free and independent people throughout their history by never bowing to foreign aggressions. Though America paints this war as a fight against terrorism but in fact it is a colonialist slogan by Washington, aimed at extending its own tentacle over Asia and, by extension, all over the world...
Now after almost one decade, many in the world have come to believe that the American war in Afghanistan is not aimed at fighting terrorism as they claims but rather to:
1. Use Afghanistan as an outpost to destabilize and carry out a regime change in the neighboring countries.
2 To control central Asian natural resources by bringing to power pro-western elements in these countries of the former Soviet republics.
3. To change the regime in Iran by supporting anti-government forces in Iran, financially politically and militarily. To spark off racial and sectarians violence in that country.
4. To disintegrate and destabilize Pakistan.
5. To pave the way and ignite vast demonstrations in China through Faulong movement to destabilize that country; to monitor China internal politics and military arsenal by installing electronic equipment in Minhas base in Kyrgyzstan and in Marja Helmand province, Afghanistan to monitor Iran’s nuclear program.
4. To make alliance with the so-called big democracy i.e. India against China and Pakistan. American has already given green signal to New Delhi to ramp up its activities in Baluchistan by working closely with Baluchistan Liberation Army.
6. To create fear among the establishment echelon in Islamabad by launching the Talibanization propaganda, encouraging them to support the so-called war on terror.

Sanctions on Iran's gasoline imports? That's war talk.
The only way to really enforce such a crippling sanction against the Iranian economy would be through an American-led naval blockade which, by international law, is an act of war... Iran’s regime has made it pretty clear that it is preparing to fight such a blockade, if it comes to that. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps began a five-day sea, land, and air military exercise April 22 in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. The war games may even extend to the Strait of Hormuz, the watery chokepoint through which a fifth of the world’s oil flows on giant tankers, and which is guarded by the US Navy...much depends on whether countries like China, Russia, and even Germany are willing to impose other types of penalties that are more targeted at top members of the regime, especially the Revolutionary Guard and its affiliated companies. The toughest ones proposed by Obama focus on Iran’s access to banking, insurance, and credit... US lawmakers need to be concerned that any unilateral US sanctions on gas imports to Iran could lead to a naval confrontation. Such a measure should only be taken with the widest international support and only if Iran appears ready to deploy a nuclear weapon that would destabilize the region

House Takes Next Step Toward Hitting Iran With Sanctions
Dow Jones Newswires
Despite Iran's massive oil reserves, the country has limited refining capacity and has to reimport much of the petroleum products its economy requires.
House and Senate lawmakers could begin talks as soon as Thursday to finalize the legislation. The sanctions would seek to penalize companies that do business with Iran's energy sector or that assist the Islamic Republic in importing gasoline. It would ban these companies from having access to the lucrative U.S. market.
"Today marks a major step towards preventing Iran from acquiring the ability to produce nuclear weapons," Rep. Howard Berman (D., Calif.), the chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, said after the vote. "Iran's intentions are clear, and now is the time to implement crippling sanctions on this reckless regime."... Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) said the time for waiting for diplomacy to influence Iran over its nuclear weapon ambitions is over. "We have waited long enough for diplomacy to work,...Iran is a festering sore on the world."

Biden: Israel won't attack Iran before sanctions allowed to work:
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said Israel had agreed to await the outcome of tightened sanctions against Iran, an effort being led by U.S. President Barack Obama. "They've agreed the next step is the step we ...have initiated in conjunction with European powers, the NATO powers," ... he expects new UN sanctions on Iran by late April or early May

Officials, Seeing Impending Policy Split With U.S., Debate Prospect of a Military Strike Without Washington's Consent

"Israel has to understand a basic reality: It is American power that gives the Jewish state a realistic hope of survival without constant war"
Leslie H. Gelb, President Emeritus and Board Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations

The greatest danger--and opportunity--for peace hangs upon the confrontation between Iran and the West. America's laser focus should be on standing with the Iranian people against their regime. If President Barack Obama wants to advance Mideast peace--not to mention human rights and an array of other American interests--he should not be picking another counterproductive fight with Israel, and--in so doing--distracting from the real and urgent Iranian threat.

US to resume talks with Israel despite refusal to halt settlements
Several US officials have emphasised the importance for the US of progress in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. "Advancing this peace would … help prevent Iran from cynically shifting attention away from its failures to meet its obligations," he said.

Obama to U.S. Jews: Nothing will distance us from Israel
"All sides should understand that our commitment to Israel is unshakeable and that no wedge will be driven between us...I am deeply committed to fulfilling the important role the United States must play for peace to be realized, but I also recognize that in order for any agreement to endure, peace cannot be imposed from the outside,"

Gates Says U.S. Lacks Policy to Curb Iran’s Nuclear Drive
A secret memo set off a search for new options that include military alternatives to be considered should the diplomacy and sanctions planned for this year fail.

NYT mischaracterizations about the memo’s content and purpose
Gates Pushes Back on Memo...
The New York Times reported in its Sunday editions Mr. Gates had warned in a secret three-page memo that the United States did not have an effective long-range policy for dealing with Iran’s steady progress toward nuclear capability. Prior to publication of the article, Obama administration officials had not publicly confirmed nor denied the memo’s existence.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr. Gates said he wished to correct what he described as mischaracterizations about the memo’s content and purpose, and to dispel any perception among allies that the administration had failed to adequately think through how to deal with Iran. “With the administration’s pivot to a pressure track on Iran earlier this year, the memo identified next steps in our defense planning process where further interagency discussion and policy decisions would be needed in the months and weeks ahead,” Mr. Gates said. “The memo was not intended as a ‘wake-up call’ or received as such by the president’s national security team,” he added. “Rather, it presented a number of questions and proposals intended to contribute to an orderly and timely decision-making process.” The New York Times article quoted one senior official as saying the document was a “wake-up call.” But Mr. Gates said, “The New York Times sources who revealed my January memo to the national security advisor mischaracterized its purpose and content.”

Pentagon chief raises threat of attack as Iran taunts US with missile display
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article71011..., April 19, 2010
The Pentagon was ratcheting up pressure for military action against Iran as..Admiral Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said last night of the Iranian nuclear programme: “Military options would go a long way to delaying it. That’s not my call. That’s going to be the President’s call. But from my perspective . . . the last option is to strike right now.”... The remarks were his strongest yet in support of a strategy that both the Pentagon and the Obama Administration still regard as a last resort and possibly a recipe for a regional war. They came as President Ahmadinejad used Iran’s annual army day parade to show off missiles capable of hitting US and Israeli targets throughout the Middle East and to demand a US military withdrawal from the region. As he did so, two senior White House officials issued strong responses to the disclosure that Mr Gates had written a classified assessment of weaknesses in the Administration’s plans for what to do if Iran failed to halt its nuclear weapons programme...
The memo was written in January but its existence was disclosed by The New York Times at the weekend. Ben Rhodes, a White House spokesman, said that it was “absolutely false” that the document had forced the Administration to reassess its options on Iran, while General Jones told the newspaper: “The fact that we don’t announce publicly our entire strategy doesn’t mean we don’t have a strategy that anticipates the full range of contingencies — we do.” It was unclear yesterday who was behind the leak of the Gates memo but the vehemence of the White House response suggests that senior Pentagon figures may be responsible. A similar pattern shadowed Mr Obama’s decision to deploy 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan last year...
According to one report the Pentagon is moving hundreds of bunker-buster bombs to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. The latest version of the weapon, known as the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, is said to weigh 15 tonnes and be capable of burrowing through 200ft of reinforced concrete before exploding. In a warning to anyone planning a strike on Iranian nuclear targets, Mr Ahmadinejad told Iranians in a televised speech that their country was so strong “that no enemy will harbour evil thoughts about laying its hands on Iranian territory”. He said of US forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Gulf: “They have to leave our region. This is not a request. It is an order from the nations of the region.” Such rhetoric reflects the worrying reality for Washington that Iran is more concerned about military encirclement by the US than by President Obama’s efforts to persuade it to end its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Iran disarmament summit affects US policy
18 Apr 2010 By Anoush Maleki

Ahmadinejad calls for U.S. to destroy its nuclear arsenal first
Sunday, April 18, 2010; A10 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/17/AR201004...
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad drew applause at a nuclear disarmament conference in Tehran attended by representatives of 60 countries when he called for the destruction of all atomic weapons, starting with those in the U.S. arsenal. The two-day forum..."nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapons for none" came about a week after the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington...Ahmadinejad took particular aim at President Obama's announcement this month of a new U.S. policy that does not rule out the use of nuclear weapons against Iran and North Korea. "Threatening with nuclear weapons only dishonored the American government officials and more fully exposed their inhumane and aggressive policies," Ahmadinejad said....He demanded an end to what he called the United States' "blind support" for Israel, which he said has 200 atomic warheads but has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty....

reliable UN, essentially a US organ like the IMF, WB, et al
Analysis: IAEA’s Iran warning offers timely help to US in its bid for sanctions
... the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) first warning that Iran could be working on a nuclear warhead is that is it not based on any new evidence. IAEA officials have long believed Iran was conducting weapons work but their conclusions were never reflected in any public reports while Mohammed ElBaradei headed the agency. This report is the first on Iran under the new director-general, Yukiya Amano, and appears to mark a significant shift in the agency’s attitude to Tehran’s nuclear programme. Dr ElBaradei became the bête noire of Western governments because of his repeated insistence the threat was “hyped” and his refusal to allow the direr conclusions to be included in public reports. Mr Amano’s blunter assessment of Tehran’s ambitions comes as a timely helper to Washington as it works to build a consensus on imposing punishing new sanctions on Iran at the UN Security Council.
With Russia’s traditional opposition softening, the sole holdout is China...The fear is that China will work hard to make the sanctions softer to protect their own trade interests, thereby blunting their efficacy. However, Mr Amano’s assessment will make that harder. It will also increase the pressure on Washington to swiftly update their now discredited assessment that Iran halted weapons work in 2003 and has not resumed it since. The evidence contained in the report also does not look good for Tehran...

'All options' open if Syria gives Hezbollah missiles: US
The United States said Wednesday it considered "all options" are open if Syria is found to have supplied Scud missiles to Hezbollah, posing a major threat for Israel.
Israeli President Shimon Peres on April 13 accused Syria of providing Scud ballistic missiles to Hezbollah... The allegations come just as the United States cautiously steps up dialogue with Syria....Jeffrey Feltman, assistant secretary of state for the Middle East and other State Department officials said they were still investigating the alleged Scud missile transfer. The United States on Monday summoned the most senior Syrian diplomat in Washington over the concerns. "We continue to study the matter," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said....
Feltman defended the Obama administration's approach favoring diplomacy ... He said that many in the Arab world would not respond well to US envoys coming in for brief visits with negative messages. With an ambassador, the United States "can go in at a very high level on a regular, continual basis," Feltman said. "It enhances our ability to get our message across.""We're not doing engagement because it's a pleasurable experience with the Syrians. We're doing engagement because it's in the US national interest," ...

US to Pursue Ties with Syria Despite Missile Allegations
Israel accused Syria of delivering missiles to Hezbollah. Syria denied the allegations, saying Israel is looking for an excuse to attack. Clinton - who spoke on the sidelines of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Estonia - did not confirm reports Syria has been providing Hezbollah militants with Scud missiles that could be used against Israel.

Nuclear Weapons And Interceptor Missiles: Twin Pillars Of U.S.-NATO Military Strategy In Europe
Rick Rozoff, April 23, 2010
The two-day NATO foreign ministers meeting in the Estonian capital of Tallinn on April 22-23 focused on the completion of the military alliance’s first 21st century Strategic Concept and on the war in Afghanistan, the near-complete absorption of the Balkans into the bloc, and the expansion of operations at the Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence established by NATO two years ago in the sa me city. The most important deliberations, however, were on the integrally related questions of U.S. nuclear weapons stored on air bases in five NATO member states and the expansion of the Pentagon’s interceptor missile program to all of Europe west of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=65345

Secret US Air Force unmanned space plane set for launch
DEBKAfile Special Report April 20, 2010 USAF X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle
Blastoff of the unmanned X-37B space plane from Kennedy Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida Space Center was delayed until Thursday, April 22 by an Atlas-5 rocket...the project has sparked speculation that the Orbital Test Vehicle is the space version of the US Predator drone...Some space experts are calling its launch the onset of the "weaponization" or militarization" of space. Our military experts describe the X-37B as the first unmanned space craft able to carry out combat missions outside Earth. Originally built by Boeing's Phantom Works Division as NASA X-37, the space agency...turned the space plane over to the Defense Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 2006, the Air Force took over the prototype.

U.S. nuclear strategy: warmed-over "novelty"
By Manlio Dinucci, Tommaso di Francesco | Rome (Italy) | 9 April 2010 | Voltaire, édition internationale |
Washington just published its new nuclear doctrine as well as signed the new treaty on arms control with Russia in the midst of a big media fanfare... upon closer scrutiny, the position of the Obama administration... simply attunes the policy of the Bush administration to today’s reality...

Pentagon 90 nuclear bombs based in Italy
From a report by U.S. environmental association Natural Resources Defense Council [1], we had already learned that the United States store 90 nuclear bombs on two Italian bases: 50 in Aviano (Pordenone) and 40 in Ghedi Torre (Brescia). Approximately 400 more bombs are deployed in Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands. They include all three versions of the tactical B61 bomb with a yield ranging from 45 to 170 kilotons (13 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb)....Italian pilots are trained to operate nuclear bombs at the USAF Capo Frasca (Oristano) and Maniago II (Pordenone) shooting ranges. With the recent release of the Nuclear Posture Review[2], these facts have been officially confirmed for the first time: "NATO non-nuclear members participate in nuclear planning and possess specially configured aircraft capable of delivering nuclear weapons".

Prompt Global Strike: World Military Superiority Without Nuclear Weapons
April 12, 2010 By Rick Rozoff
A war can be won without being waged. Victory can be attained when an adversary knows it is vulnerable to an instantaneous and undetectable, overwhelming and devastating attack without the ability to defend itself or retaliate. What applies to an individual country does also to all potential adversaries and indeed to every other nation in the world. There is only one country that has the military and scientific capacity and openly proclaims its intention to achieve that ability...what its current head of state defined last December as the world’s sole military superpower. [1] which aspires to remain the only state in history to wield full spectrum military dominance on land, in the air, on the seas and in space....Having gained that status in large part through being the first country to develop and use nuclear weapons, it is now in a position to strengthen its global supremacy by superseding the nuclear option....
The U.S. led three major wars in less than four years against Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq from 1999-2003 and in all three cases deployed from tens to hundreds of thousands of “boots on the ground” after air strikes and missile attacks. The Pentagon established military bases in all three war zones and, although depleted uranium contamination and cluster bombs are still spread across all three lands, American troops have not had to contend with an irradiated landscape. Launching a nuclear attack when a conventional one serves the same purpose would be superfluous and too costly in a variety of ways.
April 8 American and Russian presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev signed a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) agreement in the Czech capital of Prague to reduce their respective nation’s nuclear arsenals and delivery systems (subject to ratification by the U.S. Senate and the Russian Duma). Earlier in the same week the U.S. released its new Nuclear Posture Review (NPR)... the U.S. retains 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 2,200 (by some counts 3,500) more in storage and a triad of land, air and submarine delivery vehicles.

Washington is forging ahead with a replacement for the nuclear sword and shield – for blackmail and for deterrence – with a non-nuclear model that could upset the previous “balance of terror” arrangement that has been a criminal nightmare for six decades, but for sixty years without a massive missile war. The new sword, or spear, entails plans for conventional first strike weapon systems employing the same triad of land, air and sea components – with space added – and the shield is a worldwide network of interceptor missile deployments, also in all four areas. The Pentagon intends to be able to strike first and with impunity. The non-nuclear arsenal used for disabling and destroying the air defenses and strategic, potentially all major, military forces of other nations will consist of intercontinental ballistic missiles, adapted submarine-launched ballistic missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles and bombers, and super stealthy strategic bombers able to avoid detection by radar and thus evade ground- and air-based defenses. Any short-range, medium-range and intermediate-range missiles remaining in the targeted country will in theory be destroyed after launching by kinetic, “hit-to-kill” interceptor missiles. Should the missiles so neutralized contain nuclear warheads, the fallout will occur over the country that launches them or over an adjoining body of water or other nation of the U.S.’s choosing....

[CYBERCOM] The U.S. is intensifying space and cyber warfare programs with the [offensive] potential to completely shut down other nations’ military surveillance and command, control, communications, computer and intelligence systems, rendering them defenseless on any but the most basic tactical level. The Quadrennial Defense Review Report of February... “advances two clear objectives. First, to further rebalance the capabilities of America’s Armed Forces to prevail in today’s wars, while building the capabilities needed to deal with future threats. The United States remains the only nation able to project and sustain large-scale operations over extended distances” with “400,000 U.S. military personnel…forward-stationed or rotationally deployed around the world,” and is “enabled by cyber and space capabilities and enhanced by U.S. capabilities to deny adversaries’ objectives through ballistic missile defense….” One of its key goals is to “Expand future long-range strike capabilities” and promote the “rapid growth in sea- and land-based ballistic missile defense capabilities.” [6]...
The program under which Washington is developing its conventional weapons capacity to supplement its previous nuclear strategy is called Prompt Global Strike (PGS), alternately referred to as Conventional Prompt Global Strike (CPGS)....Last month Defense News featured an article “U.S. Targets Precision Arms for 21st-Century Wars,” which included this excerpt:“To counter…air defenses, the Pentagon wants to build a host of precision weapons that can hit any target from thousands of miles away. Known as a family of systems, these weapons could include whatever the Air Force chooses as its next bomber, a new set of cruise missiles and even, someday, hypersonic weapons developed under the Pentagon’s Prompt Global Strike program that would give the speed and range of an ICBM to a conventional warhead.” [15]...
