8/2 Syria: US Sets Stage for 'End of Diplomacy' and R2P Military Invasion

US - NATO, unable to defeat the Syrian govt.and peoples' successful resistance, desperately uses its powerless frontman to 'justify' a long-planned military invasion
Kofi Annan, Special envoy of the UN and Arab League, who sought unsuccessfully for months to resolve the Syria conflict, submitted his resignation Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said.

Syrian rebels now have heavy weapons - UN peacekeeping chief
UNITED NATIONS, Aug 2 (Reuters)"We know for a fact that the opposition does have heavy weapons," U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous told reporters. He gave no details on where the arms had come from, but said such weaponry included tanks and armored personnel carriers.

"refugee camps in Turkey used as military bases"
Syria: Turkey sending terrorists to wage war
BEIRUT, Aug 2 2012 (Reuters) - A Syrian statement said "The Turkish government has set up on its soil military offices where Israeli, American, Qatari and Saudi intelligence agencies direct the terrorists in their war on the Syrian people," ...it accused France and the United States of sending rebels communications equipment. U.S. sources said President Barack Obama signed a secret order authorising U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Assad. Gulf sources told Reuters Turkey had set up a secret base with allies Saudi Arabia and Qatar to direct vital military and communications aid to Syria's rebels from the city of Adana near the border....Turkey used the refugee camps as "military bases" for terrorists headed to Syria

...CIA officers largely have avoided entering Syria or traveling to the battle zones since February, when the U.S. Embassy in Damascus was shuttered for security reasons after threats by groups allied with the Assad government. Closing the embassy left the CIA without a secure base from which to operate and personnel left the country, the officials said. Critics say the CIA's absence from Syria is a missed opportunity to influence the fractured rebel movement. A few CIA officers have met with opposition leaders in Turkey near the Syrian border, officials said. They communicate by secure links with paid informers in Syria. Several journalists have been spending time with rebel groups in Syria, living and traveling with them for days...
"We should be on the ground with bucket loads of money renting the opposition groups we need to steer this in the direction that benefits the US" said a former CIA officer who spent years in the Middle East..."You have to be willing to send your people into harm's way, the agency's value to the president is being the 911 service. We should be going in and living with opposition fighters." CIA operatives, the first Americans into Afghanistan shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, helped coordinate a campaign by opposition fighters supported by U.S. bombers that led to the quick overthrow of the Taliban regime. CIA officers went into northern Iraq's Kurdish region in July 2002 to help organize militia fighters before the U.S.-led invasion.

Defeated state terrorists announce US plans
For besieged Syrian dictator Assad, only exit may be body bag
7/31/12 http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/for-besieged-syria...
Assad’s Western habits and seemingly moderate views had initially inspired optimism among Western acquaintances and Syria watchers about his leadership of the strategically vital country of 20 million. Assad’s pledges to implement political and economic reform won him prominent admirers in the US including Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.)chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee....Assad misread the message of the Arab Spring movement and perceived the Syrian uprising as an incitement by foreign conspirators...“In his mind he is fighting against the imperialists and their pernicious allies for the people of Syria,” according to one of his biographers, David Lesch, a Middle East historian...who writes about Assad’s transformation in a new book, “Syria: The Fall of the House of Assad due for release in August...
Senior U.S. analysts who have studied Assad’s recent public appearances described him as increasingly divorced from reality. His public and private comments suggest that Assad is preparing to follow the example of Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi, staking his life on his regime’s survival. A growing consensus in Washington and in Middle East capitals now holds that Assad — a man once viewed as a moderate capable of reform — will be forced from power only by death or capture. “There will not be any negotiations,” said Jeffrey White, a former senior Middle East analyst for the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency. “He will go down fighting, and he will probably do it in Damascus.”

US tries to lie its way out of its public diplomacy lies
Report: US Helping Syrian Rebels Arm, Fight
6/21/12 http://www.voanews.com/content/report_us_aiding_syrian_opposition/121674...
Syrian rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad may be getting some added help from the United States. The New York Times reports CIA operatives are working along the Turkish-Syrian border, helping to funnel arms -- including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank weapons -- to opposition groups seen as most friendly to the U.S. The report cites American officials and Arab intelligence officers, who say the arms themselves are coming from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar....
Aaron David Miller, a Middle East scholar at the Washington-based Woodrow Wilson Center, said it would be surprising if the U.S. was not trying to find ways to make the Syrian rebels more effective."These types of weapons, particularly anti-tank weapons -- I am sure there are other sorts of devices, along the lines of the manufacture and production of IEDs -- does represent, if done in volume, an effort to give the insurgency a real capacity to endure. And I think, over time, that's the plan, because there are no short-term solutions here."
Miller said such a strategy comes with risks and the longer the conflict goes on, the more difficult it will become to "reassemble Syria" as a unified political entity....
Report: Obama's intelligence 'finding' order authorized secret U.S. support for Syrian rebels
8/2/12 Reuters http://www.haaretz.com/news/middle-east/report-obama-authorizes-secret-u...
Obama's intelligence "finding,"order, approved earlier this year, a presidential document, broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the rebels oust Assad.... Precisely when Obama signed the secret intelligence authorization, not previously reported, could not be determined. The full extent of clandestine support that agencies may be providing also is unclear. White House spokesman Tommy Vietor declined comment...
A U.S. government source acknowledged that under provisions of the executive "finding", the US was collaborating with a secret command center operated by Turkey and its allies. Last week, Reuters reported that, along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Turkey had established a secret base near the Syrian border to help direct vital military and communications support to Assad's opponents. This "nerve center" in Adana, a city in southern Turkey about 60 miles (100 km) from the Syrian border, is also home to Incirlik U.S. air base where U.S. military and intelligence agencies maintain a substantial presence.
Tuesday NBC News reported the Free Syrian Army had obtained nearly two dozen surface-to-air missiles that could be used against Assad's helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft...NBC said the shoulder-fired missiles, known as MANPADs, had been delivered to the rebels via Turkey...
Indications are that U.S. agencies have not been involved in providing weapons to Assad's opponents. In order to do so, Obama would have to approve a supplement, known as a "memorandum of notification, to his initial broad intelligence finding. Further such memoranda would have to be signed by Obama to authorize other specific clandestine operations to support Syrian rebels. Reuters first reported last week that the White House had crafted a directive authorizing greater U.S. covert assistance to Syrian rebels. It was unclear at that time whether Obama had signed it....
Separately from the president's secret order, the Obama administration has stated publicly that it is providing some backing for Assad's opponents. The State Department said Wednesday the U.S. government had set aside a total of 25 million dollars for "non-lethal" assistance to the Syrian opposition. A U.S. official said that was mostly for communications equipment, including encrypted radios. The State Department also says the US has set aside 64 million dollars in humanitarian assistance...
Also on Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury confirmed it had granted authorization to the Syrian Support Group, Washington representative of the Free Syrian Army, to conduct financial transactions on the rebel group's behalf... first reported Friday by Al-Monitor, a Middle East news and commentary website...While U.S. and allied experts believe Syrian rebels have been making some progress against Assad's forces lately, most believe the conflict is nowhere near resolution, and could go on for years.

NBC Report: Syrian rebels acquired surface-to-air missiles
8/1/12 By Reuters and Jack Khoury, http://www.haaretz.com/misc/article-print-page/report-syrian-rebels-acqu...
...As of last month, U.S. officials warned any Middle Eastern nation "even considering giving arms to the Syrian opposition" to "take a measured approach and think twice about providing arms that could have unintended consequences." Nonetheless at that time, U.S. and allied officials acknowledged that Saudi Arabia and Qatar officials were discussing whether surface-to-air missiles might help Syrian rebels...Following the fall of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, some intelligence experts estimated as many as 10,000-15,000 MANPADs sets were looted from Libyan government stockpiles. The whereabouts of most are unknown. Many U.S. officials have been wary of the notion of arming Syrian rebels with MANPADs... the CIA with Saudi backing provided sophisticated shoulder-fired Stinger missiles to Islamic militants to oust Soviet troops. The missiles proved deadly against Soviet helicopter gunships, but subsequently became a major headache for U.S. and western counter-terrorism agencies when anti-Soviet militants morphed into anti-Western militants...

U.S. eases arms purchases for Syrian rebels
8/1/12 http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2012/08/01/v-print/159311/us-eases-arms-purch...
The Obama administration quietly cleared the way for U.S. residents to buy weapons for the rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad, granting a Washington-based Syrian Support Group NGO a rare license to collect money for arms and other equipment. The July 23 document first noted Friday on the Al-Monitor website, gives the Syrian Support Group the right to directly export, sell or supply “financial, communications, logistical and other services” to the Free Syrian Army. Brian Sayers, an American who served as a NATO political officer and is now the Syrian Support Group’s Washington lobbyist, said the new license would ease the fears of many prospective donors that helping the rebels buy guns would run afoul of U.S. law....supporters of the U.S. Treasury’s decision to license funding say it’s no substitute for more direct U.S. involvement to remove Assad quickly and identify trusted transitional authorities from the combatant ranks and exiled technocrats and activists in Syria. Analysts and activists say the risks are too high for the U.S. to bet the rebels eventually will win a bloody, drawn-out conflict without more U.S. and international military aid.“The Free Syrian Army has a lot to prove, but the OFAC (license) didn’t come out because the administration wanted to wash its hands of the issue,” Sayers said

White House Dismisses Report of Aid to Syrian Rebels
8/2/12, http://www.voanews.com/content/syria-us-aid/1454150.html
White House officials dismissed reports that President Barack Obama signed an order to send U.S. aid to Syrian anti-government forces. The administration announced it is sending $12 million more humanitarian aid to Syria and neighboring countries....The White House announcement came on the same day Kofi Annan announced plans to step down as the United Nations and Arab League peace envoy in Syria...White House spokesman Jay Carney said Mr. Annan’s departure shows that Russia and China were “on the wrong side of history” vetoing a Security Council resolution condemning the Assad government for the violence.

Syrian Rebels Execute Assad Loyalists in Aleppo
8/1/12 http://www.voanews.com/content/assad-army-engaged-in-fight-for-syrias-fa...
CAIRO — Syrian rebels executed four men identified by activists as members of a pro-government tribe in the northern city of Aleppo. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says a video posted on the Internet shows the rebels executing the captured government loyalists ...UN Spokesperson Sausan Ghosheh noted "We have confirmation the opposition is in possession of heavy weapons, including tanks."...Several top rebel officers denied a NBC News report that the opposition Free Syrian Army had acquired 20 surface-to-air missiles known as "manpads" [that] could hinder the government's ability to bomb targets. The UN General Assembly is scheduled to discuss a Saudi resolution draft Thursday that expresses grave concern about the violence and government's threat to use chemical weapons against what Syria calls foreign invaders. It also calls on Assad to step down. There are no vetoes in the General Assembly, unlike the Security Council, which saw Russia and China veto three separate resolutions threatening Syria with sanctions for using heavy weapons against civilians.

Syria's iPhone insurgency makes for smarter rebellion

The prevalence of smart phones and other technology has allowed Syria's rebels to undermine state media reports and rally supporters, in Syria and abroad, with evidence of regime atrocities. Forget the image of anti-regime guerrillas holed up in some remote trench as they battle government forces. This fight has been defined in Syria by endless images shot by mobile phone and volunteer videographers who know the importance of winning the media war. Every fighter seems to have at least one mobile phone to speak with families, Skype girlfriends and even advise Syrian soldiers how to defect...the tools of war and public persuasion that have become prominent in Syria like no other Arab Spring revolt...And their screen saver of choice? Inspired by the world of video games, it is black, with white words in capital letters... "GAME OVER."

US Prepares Direct Intervention in Syria
As FSA proxies fail and psychological operations falter, US prepares more direct approach for long-sought regime change
7/22/12 By Tony Cartalucci www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=32010
The New York Times' article, "US to Focus on Forcibly Toppling Syrian Government," is all but an admission NATO's FSA terrorists have failed, and what is in reality imminent, is the restoration of order by the Syrian army after over a year of foreign subversion and armed infiltration. Essential to the West's plan, is now fabricating a justification the US, Israel, and the Gulf despots currently do not have - to more directly intervene before the limitations of NATO's proxy forces are irrevocably exposed.
To achieve this, Western media continues depicting Syria as "collapsing" even as security has been fully restored in Damascus, border crossings retaken after NATO-harbored terrorists struck from across Syria's borders, overrunning small platoon-sized garrisons, and now it is confirmed that bolstered Syrian border defenses near Daraa on the Jordanian-Syrian border, entirely balked FSA terrorists. Western media is still reporting "battles" in Damascus, that have "spread" to Aleppo. Aleppo being another relatively unscathed city, is being purposefully attacked in order to enhance NATO's campaign to terrorize, panic, and divide the Syrian people. Already, however, Syrian troops have begun security operations to surround and neutralize terrorist elements, just as they did in Damascus... New York Times' article, in addition to admitting more direct military intervention is being prepared, admits that US and France are putting their proxy "Syrian National Council" in place to lead a "transitional government." The West's problem is that not a square-inch of Syrian territory is held by US NATO terrorist proxies.. raising the specter os a larger military intervention. The most likely location for such an operation would be via Turkey to establish a seat of power for the US client regime....
To justify overt intervention, an incredible amount of time and energy is invested in preparing the general public for the prospect of a "chemical attack." Syria has never deployed its chemical weapons, nor does it stand to gain from any such deployment, tactically, politically, or geopolitically. The only beneficiaries of such an attack would be US-NATO, Israel, and the Gulf despots to justify the "forcible toppling" of the Syrian government. If chemical weapons are deployed in Syria, it will most certainly be the work of US NATO and its FSA proxies, using Libya's admittedly pilfered and proliferated arsenal....maneuvering their client regime into place, while they plan openly on intervening on behalf of the "Free Syrian Army," is the final nail in the "opposition's" legitimacy, exposing them as place holders of Western geopolitical aspirations. Earlier it was reported the Syrian opposition was being coached and tutored by the US State Department, via the US government-funded US Institute of Peace (USIP) which is literally writing Syria's "new" constitution, as well as engineering the entire "transitional" process...For now it appears dividing Syria along sectarian lines, forcing government supporters to flee to ethnic enclaves...

Humanitarian Military Intervention in Syria? Who is Behind the Atrocities?
By Prof. Michel Chossudovsky
7/30/12 www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=32117
In the wake of the UN Security Council face-off with Russia and China, a dangerous new phase of the war on Syria is unfolding. The Obama administration, in liaison with London, Paris, Tel Aviv and NATO is mulling various military "intervention options", including the conduct of both naval and air operations in support of "opposition" rebel forces on the ground.
The 'justification' for waging a "humanitarian war" on Syria hinges on the "Responsibility to Protect" (R2P) the Syrian people against their own government...In the aftermath of the battle of Damascus and Free Syrian Army setbacks in Aleppo, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reiterated the US threat of military intervention, accusing Syrian government forces of waging
"a tragic attack on their own people... I think it ultimately will be a nail in Assad's own coffin,.. What Assad has been doing to his own people and what he continues to do to his own people makes clear his regime is coming to an end. It's lost all legitimacy. It's no longer a question of whether he's coming to an end, it's when." (Quoted in Syria says it recaptures Aleppo district after battle, Reuters, July 29, 2012, emphasis added) At this historical juncture it is vital to set the record straight as to who is behind these atrocities and crimes against humanity, particularly in view of the fact the Obama administration and allies are contemplating allout military intervention against Syria on "humanitarian grounds".
Who is behind the Atrocities? Whereas the government bears a burden of responsibility pertaining to the conduct of its military operations in urban areas directed against the rebels, the gruesome human rights record of the US-NATO supported "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) is unequivocal. Amply documented, the killings of innocent civilians were not carried by the government but, quite deliberately, by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) as part of a diabolical intelligence operation, blaming the Syrian government for atrocities committed by rebel forces. (See Michel Chossudovsky, SYRIA: Killing Innocent Civilians as part of a US Covert Op. Mobilizing Public Support for a R2P War against Syria, Global Research, May 30, 2012)
According to the leaked Arab League Observer Mission Report which had initially been commissioned by the Arab League at Washington's behest:
"In Homs, Idlib and Hama, the Observer Mission witnessed acts of violence being committed against Government forces and civilians that resulted in several deaths and injuries. Examples of those acts include the bombing of a civilian bus, killing eight persons and injuring others, including women and children....the bombing of buildings, trains carrying fuel, vehicles carrying diesel oil and explosions targeting the police, members of the media and fuel pipelines. Some of those attacks carried out by the Free Syrian Army and some by other armed opposition groups." (League of Arab States Observer Mission to Syria, Report of the Head of the League of Arab States Observer Mission to Syria for the period from 24 December 2011 to 18 January 2012) The Arab League Observer mission report was subsequently shelved because it revealed the forbidden truth, namely that the US-NATO sponsored "rebels" rather than the government were behind the massacres.
A report of Der Spiegel (March 29, 2012) entitled "An Executioner for Syria's Rebels Tells His Story", confirms an organized process of mass-murder and extra-judicial killing of civilians conducted by the Free Syrian Army (FSA). This single "burial brigade", according  to the executioner's testimony, was responsible for the arbitrary execution of 350-400 people including "prisoners" and "traitors".  The "traitors" are civilians within the occupied urban and rural areas, who express opposition to the rule of terror of the Free Syrian Army (FSA):
"Since last summer, we have executed slightly fewer than 150 men, which represents about 20 percent of our prisoners," says Abu Rami....But the executioners of Homs have been busier with traitors within their own ranks than with prisoners of war. "... if a citizen betrays the revolution, we make it quick". According to Abu Rami, Hussein's burial brigade has put between 200 and 250 traitors to death since the beginning of the uprising." (Der Spiegel, March 29, 2012)...
Russian journalist Marat Musin in a comprehensive report dispels the lies and fabrications of the Western media. The report is based on a chronology of events as well as eyewitness accounts.  Entire pro-government families in Houla were massacred. The terrorists were not pro-government shabbiha militia as conveyed, in chorus, by the mainstream media, they were in large part mercenaries and professional killers operating under the auspices of the self-proclaimed Free Syrian Army (FSA):
"When the rebels seized the lower checkpoint in the center of town and located next to the local police department, they began to sweep all the families loyal to the authorities in neighboring houses, including the elderly, women and children. Several families of the Al-Sayed were killed, including 20 young children and the family of Abdul Razak. The people were killed with knives and shot at point blank range. Then they presented the murdered [corpses] to the UN and the international community as victims of bombings by the Syrian army, something that was not verified by any marks on their bodies." (See Marat Musin, THE HOULA MASSACRE: Opposition Terrorists "Killed Families Loyal to the Government" ANNA News, translated from Russian, June 1, 2012)...
The recently released  "Intelligence Estimates" of  Germany's Bundes Nachrichtendienst (BND) states"'around 90 [terror attacks] can be attributed to organizations close to al-Qaeda or jihadist groups' (January through June 2012) as reported by the German daily Die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)". (quoted in English by John Rosenthal,  German intelligence: al-Qaeda all over Syria   The Asian Times, July 24, 2012).
The above mainstream media reports --together with an extensive body of evidence contained in independent alternative media reports-- confirm unequivocally that crimes against humanity are being committed by terrorist militia.  We are at a very dangerous crossroads. An all out "humanitarian war" against Syria on the Pentagon drawing board of the Pentagon, if carried out, could lead to a regional war extending from the Eastern Mediterranean to the heartland of Central Asia.
It is essential to reverse the tide of war propaganda which uses civilian deaths as a pretext to wage war on humanitarian grounds, when those killings of civilians were carried out not by the legitimate government's forces but by professional terrorists operating under the helm of the US-NATO sponsored Free Syrian Army (FSA).
