Pope Names Veteran Diplomat as Secretary of State
8/31/13 by Reuters VOA http://www.voanews.com/content/reu-pope-names-diplomate-as-chief-aide-ch...
Pope Francis attempted to set a new tone for a Vatican beset by scandals on Saturday by naming a veteran diplomat as secretary of state, a role often called the "deputy pope"...naming a new secretary of state - who acts as the pope's prime minister and chief aide - is the most significant appointment by Francis since his election in March. Although he has no power to rule on doctrinal issues, the secretary of state sets the tone for the Curia, the Vatican's central administration and is involved in everything from finances and the appointment of bishops to diplomatic relations with more than 170 countries... One of the most damaging scandals to hit the Vatican under Bertone was "Vatileaks", when Benedict's butler leaked documents alleging corruption from the pope to the media...which coincided with tumult at the Vatican bank, officially the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR) which Italian magistrates are investigating on suspicion of money laundering. The former president of the bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, was close to Bertone. Saturday's appointment was the pope's fourth move to overhaul the Vatican's central administration. A month after his election, he set up an advisory board of eight cardinals to help him govern the 1.2 billion-member Roman Catholic Church and reform the Curia. He set up another commission to advise him on how to reform the Vatican bank, ordered tighter supervision of the financial institute and set up a third commission of external experts to advise him on economic affairs, improve transparency and enforce accounting principles.

Pope Says Church Is ‘Obsessed’ With Gays, Abortion and Birth Control
Laurie Goodstein, Published: September 19, 2013 1488 Comments http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/20/world/europe/pope-bluntly-faults-churc...
Six months into his papacy, Pope Francis sent shock waves through the Roman Catholic church on Thursday with the publication of his remarks that the church had grown “obsessed” with abortion, gay marriage and contraception, and that he had chosen not to talk about those issues despite recriminations from critics.
“We have to find a new balance,” the pope continued, “otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel.”

Pope Francis Slams Abortion in New Comments: Unborn Babies “Unjustly Condemned”
9/20/13 The Vatican | LifeNews.com
Father Pavone of Priests for Life told LifeNews that media were wrong reporting on Pope Francis’ interview, he didn’t back down on abortion but called on the Catholic Church to do more to minister to women who had abortions and are discounted from God...“Nobody should try to use the words of the pope to minimize the urgent need to preach and teach about abortion...."

U.S. Relations With the Holy See
The Holy See and the United States both are members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The Holy See also is an observer to a number of international organizations including the United Nations, Organization of American States, and World Trade Organization. The Holy See is the universal government of the Roman Catholic Church and operates from Vatican City State, a sovereign, independent territory. The Pope is the ruler of both Vatican City State and the Holy See. The Holy See, as the supreme body of government of the Catholic Church, is a sovereign juridical entity under international law. The United States and the Holy See consult and cooperate on international issues of mutual interest, including human rights, inter-religious understanding, peace and conflict prevention, development, and environmental protection. The Holy See maintains an Apostolic Nunciature, the equivalent of an embassy, in the United States in Washington, D.C.

It is a popularity rating, Reese points out, that politicians in Washington and elsewhere would "kill for."

Vatican spokesperson Thomas Rosica said the process is a spiritual one.

The Great Catholic Cover-Up
The pope's entire career has the stench of evil about it.
3/15/10 Christopher Hitchens http://www.slate.com/id/2247861/
...Very much more serious is the role of Joseph Ratzinger, before the church decided to make him supreme leader, in obstructing justice on a global scale. After his promotion to cardinal, he was put in charge of the "Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith" (formerly known as the Inquisition). In 2001, Pope John Paul II placed this department in charge of the investigation of child rape and torture by Catholic priests. In May of that year, Ratzinger issued a confidential letter to every bishop. In it, he reminded them of the extreme gravity of a certain crime. But that crime was the reporting of the rape and torture. The accusations, intoned Ratzinger, were only treatable within the church's own exclusive jurisdiction. Any sharing of the evidence with legal authorities or the press was utterly forbidden. Charges were to be investigated "in the most secretive way ... restrained by a perpetual silence ... and everyone ... is to observe the strictest secret which is commonly regarded as a secret of the Holy Office … under the penalty of excommunication." Nobody has ever been excommunicated for the rape and torture of children, but exposing the crimes could get you into serious trouble...in the church that warns against moral relativism! (more on this document, two reports in the London Observer of April 24, 2005, by Jamie Doward.). Not content with shielding its own priests from the law, Ratzinger's office wrote its own private statute of limitations. The church's jurisdiction, claimed Ratzinger, "begins from the day when the minor has completed the 18th year of age" and lasts for10 more years. Daniel Shea, the attorney for two victims who sued Ratzinger and a church in Texas, correctly called that an obstruction of justice. "You can't investigate a case if you never find out about it. If you can manage to keep it secret for 18 years plus 10, the priest will get away with it."

Religion has emerged as a driving factor in this redistribution... one of the most accurate indicators of fertility since religious people tend to have more children than their secular counterparts....Although urbanization can lead to civil unrest and can provide cover for criminal and terrorist networks, urbanization also offers well-meaning religious institutions opportunities for urban ministry that could help prevent such threats...

"bilateral relationship between two governments, not a Church and a State"
US-Vatican Relations: 25th Anniversary and a New President
5/1/09 Institute of World Politics (excerpt) http://www.iwp.edu/news_publications/detail/us-vatican-relations-25th-an...
President Roosevelt was the first American president to grasp the benefit of a bilateral relationship. President Reagan and Pope John Paul II took it to a new level of cooperation. Pope Benedict and President Obama are destined to continue on the same path of forward movement....the bilateral relationship between the Holy See and the United States will continue to improve for the benefit of the world...\
In a July 2009 meeting at the Vatican, the Pope and President Obama discussed a myriad of issues (Religious News Service) including the Mideast peace process and drug trafficking in Latin America, but the Pope also gave Obama a booklet condemning embryonic stem cell research and abortion rights. Meanwhile, the pope came under fire (WashTimes) on a March 2009 trip to Africa for opposing the distribution of condoms. The church prohibits the use of contraception of any kind. The church encouraged a strong "conscience clause" in the U.S. Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) major funding initiative...allowing groups like Catholic Relief Services to refuse to execute the condom education and distribution of the programs....
President Ronald Reagan, pleased by the Pope's open defiance of Communist rule and unwavering support for the Solidarity movement in Poland, met with John Paul !! June 7, 1982 in Vatican City regarding the question of freedom in Eastern Europe. From then on the United States and the Vatican worked ever more closely on their shared objective of defeating the Soviet menace. January 10, 1984, President Reagan nominated William A. Wilson, his personal envoy to the Pope since 1981, as the first United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Holy See. This official reestablishment of diplomatic relations with the Holy See had not officially existed for over a century....
In September of 1989, U.S. Ambassador Melady had a meeting with Agostino Cardinal Casaroli, Vatican Secretary of State, who informed him about his contacts with the Soviet head of State, Mikhail Gorbachev [and] that the Holy See felt changes were taking place in the Soviet Union Pope John Paul II wanted to occur, believing they would lead to an end of the Cold War.
December 1,1989, Mikhail Gorbachev traveled to the Holy See to meet with the Pontiff. By December 1990, the Holy See had established diplomatic relations with Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Romania... the influence of Pope John Paul II and the Roman Catholic Church played a crucial role in the defeat of Communism, beginning with the Pope's first visit home in 1979, an event which General Jaruzelski himself referred to as the "detonator," setting off the explosion of political change in Poland. Mikhail Gorbachev, in an article he wrote for the March 3, 1992, edition of La Stampa, also paid a fitting tribute to the role played by John Paul II: "What has happened in Eastern Europe in recent years would not have been possible without the presence of this Pope, without the great role [and] also the political role] that he has played on the world scene."
It is vital that this relationship be continued under the new Obama Administration. It is apparent that President Obama and his administration are in disagreement with some teachings of the Church. These differences should not interfere with the bilateral relationship between two governments, not a Church and a State. When President Obama made known his selection of Hillary Rodham Clinton as Secretary of State, he said it was "a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances." ...
Thus far, the new President and Pope Benedict XVI seem to be off to a good start.
After the November 4 election, Mr. Obama received a telegram from Pope Benedict which noted the "historic" nature of his victory and offered prayers for the new President that God would "sustain you and the American people in your efforts...to build a world of peace, solidarity and justice." A week later Obama telephoned the Pope to thank him for his telegram after which they spoke for several minutes. The new President also received a phone call from the Pope on the day of his inauguration....
Pope Benedict XV! stirred controversy in a September 2006 address that quoted the following statement from a medieval text: "Show me just what [the Prophet] Mohammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman." After Muslim leaders expressed outrage, the pope backpedaled, apologizing for any offense taken-- some Muslim groups said the apology was insufficient as the pontiff stopped short of apologizing for the remarks themselves. Later the pope struck a more conciliatory tone, calling for "reconciliation" among world religions
The White House and Vatican agree on the need to frame the war on terror not as one against Muslims but one against radical ideology. "There's been lots of emphasis on the Holy See to make sure this is not seen as a religious conflict," says J. Bryan Hehir , an expert on the Catholic Church at Harvard University. However, Pope Benedict XVI, like Washington, has been vocal in pressing for Muslim moderates to condemn terrorist actions... Theologically, Benedict has a fine appreciation for religious Judaism, J. Peter Pham of James Madison University says. The pontiff's views on Muslims are less clear. "If you look at history, he's profoundly skeptical of democracy and Islam," Pham says. Before he was elected pope, Cardinal Ratzinger came out against Turkey's accession to the European Union, ostensibly because of its Muslim heritage.
The Vatican has played an important role in the Middle East peace process. Officially it recognizes Israel's right to exist while supporting Palestinian demands for a homeland. In 2006, the pope's omission of Israel from a list of countries struck by terrorist attacks drew criticisms from Israeli leaders....

Perhaps nowhere does the Vatican wield more influence than in Latin America, where the population is mainly Catholic. The Vatican opposed Reagan's policies during the 1980s, including the U.S. interventions in El Salvador and Nicaragua. Twenty years later, the U.S. image in the region has been tarnished, not least because of its failed prescriptions for market reforms. Some experts say a U.S. alliance with the Vatican can help improve its image south of the border...in an April 2008 interview the pope intently focused on the extent to which Vatican---U.S. policy intersects with Vatican-Latin American policy... The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops supports free trade agreements like CAFTA and the proposed U.S. Free Trade Area of the Americas. The Church has always acknowledged the natural right to property ...Christian conscience cannot admit as right a social order that denies the principle or renders impossible and useless in practice the natural right to ownership of commodities and means of production.”
Sept. 1944 Pope's speech to the world

"...So you have two great forces lined up against each other...this week’s mobilization of world Catholicism against Communism was the most striking visible symbol of opposition since the Communist Manifesto led Pius IX to issue his first condemnation of Marxism. We took this country by terror, away from the Sioux, the Apache, the Arowak, the Comanche. We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done is brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost...The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' ...We’ve got more black men in prison than in college...Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run....You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it not to come back on you....We are deeply involved in the importing of drugs, the exporting of guns and the training of professional killers…believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God… We conducted radiation experiments on our own people… We care nothing about human life if the ends justify the means. And … And! God! Has got! To be sick! Of this shit!...No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme....
