High Hopes, Modest Expectations
9/29/14 by Aarthi Gunasekaran and Vikram Singh
...With world leaders knee-deep in the unfolding crises and Americans eyeing midterm elections at home, newly elected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is using the margins of the U.N. General Assembly to make his first official visit to the United States....and meet with President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.... vitally important to the future of Indian-U.S. ties... concern about a host of issues holding back the relationship, including India’s close, historic military relationship with Russia; India’s protectionist barriers to foreign investment; and the United States’ cumbersome export-control policies. But progress has been made in all these areas. President Obama and Prime Minister Modi now have the opportunity to silence the echo chamber of skeptics by showing that they will take this partnership to the next level...

India sterilizes 4.6 million women each year—37% of sterilizations globally,

At least 15 women have died... article/ 2014/ 11/ 16/ us-india-health-sterilisation-iduskcn0j003m20141116
The antibiotics were handed out at a mass sterilization held a week ago at a government-run family planning camp in Chhattisgarh state, one of India's poorest. At least 15 women have died...More possible victims arrived at hospitals from villages Thursday and Friday... complaining of vomiting, dizziness and swelling... new patients had not attended the sterilization camps but were given the drugs separately the doctor and another official said.

NYT et al posit 'TAINTED" as the only possibility: see ciprofloxacin's listed potential side effects bottom of page.. And note legal cover: all the 'side effects' are medically undefined, thus 'rare' could be diagnosed as 'infrequent' or "common", depending on the degree of physical damage and/or death and State/Corporate liability
Tainted Drugs Suspected in India Sterilization Deaths
In recent days the investigation has focused on two packets of pills sent home with each patient... one containing the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, another, the anti-inflammatory painkiller ibuprofen. One clue pointing to the pills was another death and scores of hospitalizations from separate sterilization clinics overseen by another surgeon two days later. That surgeon, Dr. K. K. Sao, said there was a third set of patients as well, people who did not undergo surgery, but were given medicine from the same batches for other reasons...
Bedan Bai said her granddaughter began vomiting an hour after taking her first dose of ciprofloxacin and died later....Most of the affected patients experienced vomiting and abdominal pain, followed by a feeling of dizziness and chest pains. In the most serious cases, the patients deteriorated very rapidly and died within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms....

Compulsory sterilization
India's state of emergency between 1975 and 1977 included an initiative that began in April 1976 the government hoped would lower India's ever increasing population.. using propaganda and monetary incentives... about 600,000 people, mostly women, sterilized.... the plan was principally financed with USAID funds (36 million) ... Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's son Sanjay Gandhi was largely blamed...In May 2014, the World Health Organization, OHCHR, UN Women, UNAIDS, UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF issued a joint statement on Eliminating forced, coercive and otherwise involuntary sterilization, An interagency statement. The report references the involuntary sterilization of a number of specific population groups.

“There is today one state in which at least beginnings toward a better conception are noticeable. Of course it is not our model German Republic, but the United States. I have studied with great interest the laws concerning prevention of reproduction by people whose progeny would, in all probability, be of no value or be injurious to the racial stock.”

...population hasn't even begun to level off. So the real trick, in terms of trying to level off at someplace lower than 9 billion, is to get the birthrates in the developing countries to drop as fast as we can. And that will determine the level at which humans will level off on Earth.... the next two lectures Professor Martin Polz, a professor in civil and environmental engineering and microbiologist is going to talk to you about population economy... population genetics, really exciting work going on using genomics to decipher evolution and population biology.
