Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Saturday, 12 January 2008.

...In a dispatch posted at 1:12pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that residents of the 'Arab Jabbur area who witnessed the massive American bombing of their region on Thursday have said that most of the victims of the savage US air assault were women and children. At dawn on Thursday, 10 January, the United States sent B-1 strategic bombers and F-18 fighter bombers into the area, dropping 38 bombs weighing more than 21 tons on civilian targets in 'Arab Jabbur. Yaqen reported local residents as saying that the American claims that the raids "killed dozens of gunmen" in the area were totally untrue. Witnesses said that the American attacks struck houses of residents and that most of the dead were women and children. In one home a family of 10 was completely wiped out, the residents said. The bodies of those victims and an uncalculated number of others still lie buried in piles of rubble, the like of which has not been seen since the start of the American aggression against Iraq, Yaqen reported. US forces have imposed a "security cordon" around the area where the bombing took place, making it impossible for local residents to do anything to dig out the remains or the dead or to search for survivors possibly still buried under the rubble... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=40054

Link to U.S. Propaganda video from Arab Jabour:

The US forces invited families back to Arab Jabour weeks ago
Radio Sawa broadcast December 11 good news from American forces that the regions of Arab Jabour and Al-Buaitha had been definitively cleared of the last vestiges of AlQaeda. Here's what their website reported that day:

Joseph Inge, fourth brigade, third American infantry division, said his forces with the aid of the Awakening forces had been able to clear out the last strongholds of AlQaeda in the regions of Arab Jabour and Al-Buaitha south of Baghdad. He told Radio Sawa:
"We cleared the Area Arab Jabour from Al Qaeda threat, with the help of the citizens [Awakening Council] Added: We ask all the displaced people to return to their homes, and we will help them..."
Thursday [Jan.10] 40 "targets"--described by the miitary as "reported AlQaeda safe-havens"--were hit by 40,000 pounds of bombs dropped on Arab Jabour in a 10-minute raid by the American Air Force assisted by another brigade, the second, of the same third American infantry division that had invited families back into the area only three weeks ago. The military had no information on how many people it killed...
40 AlQaeda locations where three weeks before the Americans said there were none, in an area they now controlled...with the assistance of their new-found local allies... that is. But was this bombing motivated by something else, connected with the politics of the Awakenings.. US military spokesman later told AP that this was "one of the largest air-strikes since the onset of the war"; and the AP reporter says it "recalled the Pentagon's 'shock and awe' raids in the 2003 invasion". http://www.uruknet.de/?p=40014

Why Don't You Bomb Yourself and Save Us All
Gilad Atzmon
"President Bush had tears in his eyes during an hour-long tour of Israel's Holocaust Memorial on Friday and told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that the U.S. should have bombed Auschwitz to halt the killing". You see Mr. President, it couldn't work out, because at that time Hitler was working for America, killing 'red communists'. At the time, America and Britain had an armistice with Nazi Germany in mind.... at the time your military intelligence didn't really buy the story of Nazi Germany involvement in mass liquidation. Consequently, your country didn't open its gates to Jewish refugees. However, if you are truly shocked by Nazi inhumanity and regret your country's impotence at the time of the war, now is the time to act. You can always save the Palestinians. You can, for instance, just threaten to bomb Tel Aviv, Haifa or Jerusalem... This will be enough to liberate the Palestinians in Gaza concentration Camp. In case you are still motivated by a genuine humanist call, you may consider bombing yourself, and saving the rest of the Iraqi people from the genocide... Mr President, it is never too late to save humanity from yourself and your ilk. http://www.uruknet.de/?p=40024

Abdul Wahhab Al Kayyali
(International Symposium on Zionism and Racism, Baghdad November 1976)

...Jewish colonialists sought to forge a nation or a national identity through the colonization act itself. Unlike the other nation-seeking movements this was to be based on religion, as they did not speak one language nor did they have social norms and continued historical experience in common.[11] In order to make it more viable to the European mind, Zionism claimed the racial unity of the Jews thus adding pseudo-scientificism to the anachronistic concept of building a religious nation state. Another characteristic was that, while endeavouring to secure the enthusiastic patronage of the most powerful or most interested of the Western powers, Zionism based itself on the consensus of Western and imperialist powers through and through. It sought and procured benefit from inter-imperialist competition in contradistinction with other colonial settler-states. The last of these nuances was an ideologically-powered one-namely that Zionism sought to expel the "natives" as their basic strategy called for a purely Jewish national state....

The fundamental concepts underpinning Herzl's thought and Zionist outlook are in his Der Judenstaaf. "Supposing His Majesty the Sultan were to give us Palestine, we could in return undertake to regulate the whole finances of Turkey. We should there form a portion of the rampart of Europe against Asia, an outpost of civilisation as opposed to barbarism. We should, as a neutral State, remain in contact with all Europe, which would have to guarantee our existence."[12] The same theme recurs, appropriately enough, in Herzl's address to the First Zionist Congress: "It is more and more to the interest of the civilised nations and of civilisation in general that a cultural station be established on the shortest road to Asia. Palestine is this station and we Jews are the bearers of culture who are ready to give our property and our lives to bring about its creation."[13]

Twenty-one years later, Herzl's prominent successor Chaim Weizmann was to explain to the British imperialist statesman most readily associated with Zionism, Arthur James Balfour, the contemplated Zionist plan: "a community of four to five million Jews in Palestine ... from which the Jews could radiate out into the Near East.... But all this pre-supposes free and unfettered development of the Jewish National Home in Palestine not mere facilities for colonisation."[14] This concept did not only echo Palmerston's proposal but also responded to the rising Western needs in the area after the opening of the Suez Canal, British occupation of Egypt and World War I. The gist of British strategic thought was spelled out in a memorandum by the General Staff at the War Office: "The creation of a buffer Jewis State in Palestine, though this State will be weak in itself, is strategically desirable for Great Britain."[15]

Basic Strategy
The Basle Program, formulated by the First Zionist Congress determined that the "aim of Zionism is to create for the Jewish people a home in Palestine secured by public law." A reading of Herzl's Diaries as well as an examination of subsequent Zionist action would reveal that the term "public law" refers to the patronage of the imperialist powers. This patronage was deemed necessary in more ways than one. Herzl sought a colonial concession with explicit and public imperial backing as this would establish his own credibility among the Jews[16] as well as secure viability and protection to the venture. He envisaged that the European powers would back Zionism for one of three main motives: (1) imperialist self-interest; (2) ridding themselves of Jews and anti-Semitism (in West Europe's case avoiding the influx of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe) and (3) using organized Jewish influence to combat revolutionary movements and other internal factors....

From the imperialist point of view Zionist opposition to Arab unity is Israel's raison d'etre, from the Zionist point of view it is a sine qua non. Viewed in the wider imperialist context Israel is essentially a tool, a bet, against Arab liberation, unity and progress. Historically, Zionism sought to ally Jews and imperialist gentiles against and at the expense of the Arabs. They sought to bring about Jewish conformism by adopting the same reactionary notions that aggravated the Jewish situation in Europe. Zionism accepted and emulated (elsewhere) the notions of the European enemies of the Jews: chauvinist nationalism, anti-Semitism and reactionary governments. With the help of the imperialist West they recreated the ghetto in the East in the form of an alien aggressive nation-state, and reincarnated the traditional role of being an agent for the feudal lord by becoming the agent of the dominant imperialist power, only this time they could play the role of the oppressor...

Inasmuch as Israel is a regression to the idea of religion as a basis for a nation-state it is an anachronism. Inasmuch as it is an alien Western invasion of Arab land it is another Crusade doomed to failure. Inasmuch as it is a colonial-racist state it is an enemy of the spirit of the age of liberation and equality. Thus, the peoples of the Third World started to move in the direction of denying Zionism the international legitimacy it unjustly enjoyed since the declaration of its state. Inasmuch as it is naturally allied to the imperialist powers in their battle against Arab rights and the Arab future it will collapse with the defeat of imperialism in the Arab homeland as it was defeated elsewhere...

Rate of killing doubled since Annapolis
Maan News
The rate of Israeli attacks on, and killings of, Palestinians has doubled since the US-sponsored Annapolis peace summit, former Palestinian information minister and head of the Palestinian National Initiative, Mustafa Barghouthi, announced on Wednesday. As US President George W. Bush's visited the Palestinian Territories, Dr Barghouthi exposed the extent of Israel's aggression against the Palestinian people in 2007, a year characterised by the highest ever ratio of Palestinian to Israeli killings, and unabated settlement expansion.... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=40008

VICTORY TO PALESTINE...NEVER FORGET 60 years of The Catastroph !
Carlos Latuff
60 years of The Catastroph
May 15th, 1948, was the Palestinian Al-Nakba (the Catastrophe), or what Israel refers to as the "Day of Independence". To Palestinians, it symbolizes the dispossession, displacement, and uprooting of 800,000 Palestinians from their homes in what then became Israel. Many of these refugees and their descendants, who now number more than 4 million, still languish in refugee camps in the West Bank, Gaza, and surrounding Arab countries. While Al-Nakba embodies the first major wave of forced expulsion of Palestinians from their land, Israel's premeditated campaign of ethnic cleansing continues to this very day.

Pakistan and the "Global War on Terrorism" (part 2- excerpt)
Michel Chossudovsky
(Part I: The Destabilization of Pakistan)

...The assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto must be understood in a historical context. Since the late 1970s, successive US administrations have contributed to repealing the Rule of Law, destroying Pakistani institutions of civilian and secular government and instating military rule. During the Cold War and its aftermath, the repeal of democracy and the militarization of the Pakistani State have served US foreign policy objectives. Pakistan is a geopolitical hub from which US sponsored military and covert intelligence operations have been launched.... America's covert war in Afghanistan, using Pakistan as a launch pad, was initiated during the Carter administration prior to the Soviet "invasion": "According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahideen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979. But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention." (Former National Security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, Interview with Nouvel Observateur, 15-21 January 1998).
The Soviet-Afghan war part of a CIA covert agenda, initiated during the Carter administration, consisted in actively supporting and financing the Islamic brigades, later known as Al Qaeda. The Pakistani military regime played from the outset in the late 1970s, a key role in US sponsored military and intelligence operations in Afghanistan. in the post-Cold war era, this central role of Pakistan in US intelligence operations was extended to the broader Central Asia- Middle East region....

With CIA backing and the funneling of massive amounts of U.S. military aid, the Pakistani ISI had developed into a "parallel structure wielding enormous power over all aspects of government". (Dipankar Banerjee, "Possible Connection of ISI With Drug Industry", India Abroad, 2 December 1994). Meanwhile, CIA operations had also reinforced the Pakistani military regime led by General Zia Ul Haq: Relations between the CIA and the ISI had grown increasingly warm following [General] Zia’s ouster of Bhutto and the advent of the military regime. … During most of the Afghan war, Pakistan was more aggressively anti-Soviet than even the United States. Soon after the Soviet military invaded Afghanistan in 1980, Zia [ul Haq] sent his ISI chief to destabilize the Soviet Central Asian states. The CIA only agreed to this plan in October 1984.(Ibid)

The ISI operating virtually as an affiliate of the CIA, played a central role in channeling support to Islamic paramilitary groups in Afghanistan and subsequently in the Muslim republics of the former Soviet Union. Acting on behalf of the CIA, the ISI was also involved in the recruitment and training of the Mujahideen. In the ten year period from 1982 to 1992, some 35,000 Muslims from 43 Islamic countries were recruited to fight in the Afghan jihad. The madrassas in Pakistan, financed by Saudi charities, were also set up with US support with a view to "inculcating Islamic values". "The camps became virtual universities for future Islamic radicalism," (Ahmed Rashid, The Taliban). Guerilla training under CIA-ISI auspices included targeted assassinations and car bomb attacks. Weapons' shipments "were sent by the Pakistani army and the ISI to rebel camps in the North West Frontier Province near the Afghanistan border. The governor of the province is Lieutenant General Fazle Haq, who [according to Alfred McCoy] . allowed "hundreds of heroin refineries to set up in his province." Beginning around 1982, Pakistani army trucks carrying CIA weapons from Karachi often pick up heroin in Haq’s province and return loaded with heroin. They are protected from police search by ISI papers. (1982-1989: US Turns Blind Eye to BCCI and Pakistani Government Involvement in Heroin Trade See also McCoy, 2003, p. 477) .

Osama bin Laden, America's bogyman, was recruited by the CIA in 1979 at the very outset of the US sponsored jihad. He was 22 years old and was trained in a CIA sponsored guerilla training camp. During the Reagan administration, Osama, who belonged to the wealthy Saudi Bin Laden family was put in charge of raising money for the Islamic brigades. Numerous charities and foundations were created. The operation was coordinated by Saudi intelligence, headed by Prince Turki al-Faisal, in close liaison with the CIA. The money derived from the various charities were used to finance the recruitment of Mujahieen volunteers. Al Qaeda, the base in Arabic was a data bank of volunteers who had enlisted to fight in the Afghan jihad. That data base was initially held by Osama bin Laden....

In December 1984, the Sharia Law (Islamic jurisprudence) was established in Pakistan following a rigged referendum launched by President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. Barely a few months later, in March 1985, President Ronald Reagan issued National Security Decision Directive 166 (NSDD 166), which authorized "stepped-up covert military aid to the Mujahideen" as well a support to religious indoctrination.

The imposition of The Sharia in Pakistan and the promotion of "radical Islam" was a deliberate US policy serving American geopolitical interests in South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East. Many present-day "Islamic fundamentalist organizations" in the Middle East and Central Asia, were directly or indirectly the product of US covert support and financing, often channeled through foundations from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States. Missions from the Wahhabi secto of conservative Islam in Saudi Arabia were put in charge of running the CIA sponsored madrassas in Northern Pakistan. .

Under NSDD 166, a series of covert CIA-ISI operations was launched... With William Casey as director of the CIA, NSDD 166 was described as the largest covert operation in US history: US assistance to the Islamic brigades channeled through Pakistan was not limited to bona fide military aid. Washington also supported and financed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the process of religious indoctrination, largely to secure the demise of secular institutions:

... the United States spent millions of dollars to supply Afghan schoolchildren with textbooks filled with violent images and militant Islamic teachings, part of covert attempts to spur resistance to the Soviet occupation. The primers, which were filled with talk of jihad and featured drawings of guns, bullets, soldiers and mines, have served since then as the Afghan school system's core curriculum. Even the Taliban used the American-produced books,..the White House defends the religious content, saying that Islamic principles permeate Afghan culture and that the books "are fully in compliance with U.S. law and policy." Legal experts, however, question whether the books violate a constitutional ban on using tax dollars to promote religion ... AID officials said in interviews that they left the Islamic materials intact because they feared Afghan educators would reject books lacking a strong dose of Muslim thought. The agency removed its logo and any mention of the U.S. government from the religious texts, AID spokeswoman Kathryn Stratos said. "It's not AID's policy to support religious instruction," Stratos said. "But we went ahead with this project because the primary purpose . . . is to educate children, which is predominantly a secular activity." ... Published in the dominant Afghan languages of Dari and Pashtun, the textbooks were developed in the early 1980s under an AID grant to the University of Nebraska -Omaha and its Center for Afghanistan Studies. The agency spent $ 51 million on the university's education programs in Afghanistan from 1984 to 1994." (Washington Post, 23 March 2002) ...

The Golden Crescent Drug Trade
The history of the drug trade in Central Asia is intimately related to the CIA's covert operations. Prior to the Soviet-Afghan war, opium production in Afghanistan and Pakistan was directed to small regional markets. There was no local production of heroin. (Alfred McCoy, Drug Fallout: the CIA's Forty Year Complicity in the Narcotics Trade. The Progressive, 1 August 1997). Alfred McCoy's study confirms that within two years of the onslaught of the CIA operation in Afghanistan, "the Pakistan-Afghanistan borderlands became the world's top heroin producer." (Ibid) Various Islamic paramilitary groups and organizations were created. The proceeds of the Afghan drug trade, which was protected by the CIA, were used to finance the various insurgencies:
"Under CIA and Pakistani protection, Pakistan military and Afghan resistance opened heroin labs on the Afghan and Pakistani border. According to The Washington Post of May 1990, among the leading heroin manufacturers were Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, an Afghan leader who received about half of the covert arms that the U.S. shipped to Pakistan. Although there were complaints about Hekmatyar's brutality and drug trafficking within the ranks of the Afghan resistance of the day, the CIA maintained an uncritical alliance and supported him without reservation or restraint.

Once the heroin left these labs in Pakistan's northwest frontier, the Sicilian Mafia imported the drugs into the U.S., where they soon captured sixty percent of the U.S. heroin market. That is to say, sixty percent of the U.S. heroin supply came indirectly from a CIA operation. During the decade of this operation, the 1980s, the substantial DEA contingent in Islamabad made no arrests and participated in no seizures, allowing the syndicates a de facto free hand to export heroin. By contrast, a lone Norwegian detective, following a heroin deal from Oslo to Karachi, mounted an investigation that put a powerful Pakistani banker known as President Zia's surrogate son behind bars. The DEA in Islamabad got nobody, did nothing, stayed away.

Former CIA operatives have admitted that this operation led to an expansion of the Pakistan-Afghanistan heroin trade. In 1995 the former CIA Director of this Afghan operation, Mr. Charles Cogan, admitted sacrificing the drug war to fight the Cold War. "Our main mission was to do as much damage to the Soviets. We didn't really have the resources or the time to devote to an investigation of the drug trade," he told Australian television. "I don't think that we need to apologize for this. Every situation has its fallout. There was fallout in terms of drugs, yes, but the main objective was accomplished. The Soviets left Afghanistan." (Alfred McCoy, Testimony before the Special Seminar focusing on allegations linking CIA secret operations and drug trafficking-convened February 13, 1997, by Rep. John Conyers, Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus)

Lucrative Narcotics Trade in the Post Cold War Era
The drug trade has continued unabated during the post Cold war years. Afghanistan became the major supplier of heroin to Western markets, in fact almost the sole supplier: more than 90 percent of the heroin sold Worldwide originates in Afghanistan. This lucrative contraband is tied into Pakistani politics and the militarization of the Pakistani State. It also has a direct bearing on the structure of the Pakistani economy and its banking and financial institutions, which from the outset of the Golden Crescent drug trade have been involved in extensive money laundering operations, which are protected by the Pakistani military and intelligence apparatus: According to the US State Department International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (2006) (quoted in Daily Times, 2 March 2006),
"Pakistani criminal networks play a central role in the transshipment of narcotics and smuggled goods from Afghanistan to international markets. Pakistan is a major drug-transit country. The proceeds of narcotics trafficking and funding for terrorist activities are often laundered by means of the alternative system called hawala. ... "Repeatedly, a network of private unregulated charities has also emerged as a significant source of illicit funds for international terrorist networks," the report pointed out. ... "... According to the State Department report, "the State Bank of Pakistan has frozen more twenty years] a meager $10.5 million "belonging to 12 entities and individuals linked to Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda or the Taliban". What the report fails to mention is that the bulk of the proceeds of the Afghan drug trade are laundered in bona fide Western banking institutions.

The Taliban Repress the Drug Trade
A major and unexpected turnaround in the CIA sponsored drug trade occurred in 2000. The Taliban government which came to power in 1996 with Washington's support, implemented in 2000-2001 a far-reaching opium eradication program with the support of the United Nations which served to undermine a multibillion dollar trade. (For further details see, Michel Chossudovsky, America's War on Terrorism, Global Research, 2005). In 2001 prior to the US-led invasion, opium production under the Taliban eradication program declined by more than 90 percent.

In the immediate wake of the US led invasion, the Bush administration ordered that the opium harvest not be destroyed on the fabricated pretext that this would undermine the military government of Pervez Musharraf. "Several sources inside Capitol Hill noted that the CIA opposes the destruction of the Afghan opium supply because to do so might destabilize the Pakistani government of Gen. Pervez Musharraf. According to these sources, Pakistani intelligence had threatened to overthrow President Musharraf if the crops were destroyed. ... 'If they [the CIA] are in fact opposing the destruction of the Afghan opium trade, it'll only serve to perpetuate the belief that the CIA is an agency devoid of morals; off on their own program rather than that of our constitutionally elected government'" .(NewsMax.com, 28 March 2002) Since the US led invasion, opium production has increased 33 fold from 185 tons in 2001 under the Taliban to 6100 tons in 2006. Cultivated areas have increased 21 fold since the 2001 US-led invasion. (Michel Chossudovsky, Global Research, 6 January 2006)
In 2007, Afghanistan supplied approximately 93% of the global supply of heroin. The proceeds (in terms of retail value) of the Afghanistan drug trade are estimated (2006) to be in excess of 190 billion dollars a year, representing a significant fraction of the global trade in narcotics.(Ibid)
The proceeds of this lucrative multibillion dollar contraband are deposited in Western banks. Almost the totality of the revenues accrue to corporate interests and criminal syndicates outside Afghanistan. The laundering of drug money constitutes a multibillion dollar activity, which continues to be protected by the CIA and the ISI. In the wake of the 2001 US invasion of Afghanistan. ...

The Assassination of General Zia Ul-Haq
In August 1988, President Zia was killed in an air crash together with US Ambassador to Pakistan Arnold Raphel and several of Pakistan's top generals. The circumstances of the air crash remain shrouded in mystery. Following Zia's death, parliamentary elections were held and Benazir Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister in December 1988. She was subsequently removed from office by Zia's successor, President Ghulam Ishaq Khan on the grounds of alleged corruption. In 1993, she was re-elected and was again removed from office in 1996 on the orders of President Farooq Leghari. Continuity has been maintained throughout. Under the short-lived post-Zia elected governments of Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, the central role of the military-intelligence establishment and its links to Washington were never challenged.

Both Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif served US foreign policy interests. While in power, both democratically elected leaders, nonetheless supported the continuity of military rule. As prime minister from 1993 to 1996, Benazir Bhutto "advocated a conciliatory policy toward Islamists, especially the Taliban in Afghanistan" which were being supported by Pakistan's ISI (See F. William Engdahl, Global Research, January 2008)

Benazir Bhutto's successor as Prime Minister, Mia Muhammad Nawaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) was deposed in 1999 in a US supported coup d'Etat led by General Pervez Musharraf. The 1999 coup was instigated by General Pervez Musharaf, with the support of the Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General Mahmoud Ahmad, who was subsequently appointed to the key position of head of military intelligence (ISI).

From the outset of the Bush administration in 2001, General Ahmad developed close ties not only with his US counterpart CIA director George Tenet, but also with key members of the US government including Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, not to mention Porter Goss, who at the time was Chairman of the House Committee on Intelligence. Ironically, Mahmoud Ahmad is also known, according to a September 2001 FBI report, for his suspected role in supporting and financing the alleged 9/11 terrorists as well as his links to Al Qaeda and the Taliban. (See Michel Chossudovsky, America's "war on Terrorism, Global Research, Montreal, 2005)

Concluding Remarks
These various "terrorist" organizations were created as a result of CIA support. They are not the product of religion. The project to establish "a pan-Islamic Caliphate" is part of a carefully devised intelligence operation. CIA support to Al Qaeda was not in any way curtailed at the end of the Cold War. In fact quite the opposite. The earlier pattern of covert support not only extended, it took on a global thrust and became increasingly sophisticated.

The "Global War on Terrorism" is a complex and intricate intelligence construct. The covert support provided to "Islamic extremist groups" is part of an imperial agenda. It purports to weaken and eventually destroy secular and civilian governmental institutions, while also contributing to vilifying Islam. It is an instrument of colonization which seeks to undermine sovereign nation-states and transform countries into territories.... The fabrication of "terrorism" --including covert support to terrorists-- is required to provide legitimacy to the "war on terrorism". The various fundamentalist and paramilitary groups involved in US sponsored "terrorist" activities are "intelligence assets". In the wake of 9/11, their designated function as "intelligence assets" is to perform their role as credible "enemies of America"...

The underlying objective is to create divisions within national societies throughout the Middle East and Central Asia, while also triggering sectarian strife within Islam, ultimately with a view to curbing the development of a broad based secular mass resistance, which would challenge US imperial ambitions...

Historically, Pakistan has played a central role in "war on terrorism". Pakistan constitutes from Washington's standpoint a geopolitical hub. It borders onto Afghanistan and Iran. It has played a crucial role in the conduct of US and allied military operations in Afghanistan as well as in the context of the Pentagon's war plans in relation to Iran. Pakistan remains a training ground for the US sponsored Islamic brigades in the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, South and South East Asia. President Pervez Musharraf, is described by the Western media as "a U.S. ally in its battle against terrorism" Realities are turned upside down. The Pakistani military regime has consistently, since the late 1970s, abetted and financed "Islamic terrorist organizations" on Washington's behalf [...]

Kenya and Rwanda Have Little in Common – Except Colonialism
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

Hardly a story is done about the killings in Kenya without reference to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Although the events are entirely different in both scope and historical background, facts make little difference to "western" reporters who lump all mass bloodletting in Africa under the same implicit category: African barbarism, savagery, and immutable tribalism. No further explanation is considered necessary. Not that any would be forthcoming from most non-African journalists, few of whom bother to acquaint themselves with the actual histories of African nations, and virtually none of whom trace the current crises in Africa to colonial rule. No, African "savagery" is sufficient to explain everything. Thus, Kenya 2008 equals Rwanda 1994.
In Kenya, it appears that as many as one million votes may have been stolen by the ruling party, dominated by Kikuyu people, in last month's elections. Hundreds have died and thousands been displaced as the opposition, particularly the Luo ethnic group, demands new elections. Western reporters almost uniformly lament that Kenya has long been a "beacon of democracy" in post-colonial Africa, forgetting to mention that dictator Daniel Arap Moi ruled the country for 24 years, to the great profit and political satisfaction of Britain and the United States. Few reporters point out - or even seem to know - that it was the British who, as Kenyan independence approached, "drew electoral boundaries to cut the representation of groups they thought might cause trouble."... the Brits' method of continuing their legacy of tribal manipulation even after they were no longer colonial masters....
The Belgians worked tribalism to maximum profit in Rwanda, a country that even in pre-colonial times had been dominated by the Tutsi minority. The Belgians made it official, distributing identification cards designating Tutsis and Hutus, and favoring the Tutsis in colonial business, education and politics, thus hardening the ethnic divide. The Tutsi military regime that took power after the genocide and the defeat of Hutu nationalists is now one of Washington's two most trusted clients in Africa, along with the military strongman in Uganda, who has presided over horrifically brutal policies against the Acholi people of that country.

Tribalism has many uses for imperialists, who strongly encourage such divisions. It is, of course, perfectly suited to "divide and conquer" strategies of direct - or indirect - rule. It is also a convenient, Euro-supremacist explanation for whatever ails Africa. The Brits and the Americans have urged Kenyans to "behave responsibly" - as if it is innate, childlike African irresponsibility that is the source of the problem. The former colonizers and current imperialists have no positive role to play in Kenya - only a desire to preserve their own economic and military interests. They ought to stay the hell out.

Darfur peacekeepers suffer humbling defeat
By Colum Lynch
The Washington Post
A U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force faced the first major challenge to its authority in Darfur, Sudan, last week, enduring more than 10 minutes of hostile fire from Sudanese forces without responding with a single shot. A police adviser for the U.N.-African Union mission confers Saturday with members of the Sudan Liberation Army.... The incident marked a setback to U.S.-backed efforts to end nearly five years of violence in Darfur through the deployment of more than 26,000 peacekeepers, mostly Africans. The mission replaced 7,000 African Union peacekeepers who had largely retreated to their barracks amid armed attacks.
The new force so far has about 9,000 peacekeepers, most of whom are African Union troops. The United States, the United Nations and other key powers had reason to believe an attack such as Tuesday's was coming...
Sudan, meanwhile, has imposed technical hurdles for the mission, including the recent rejection of a unit of Nordic engineers, according to U.N. officials. The Sudanese authorities continue to haggle over the force's right to wear the U.N. blue helmets, recruit non-African troops and travel in Darfur without government approval.[...]

The Ravaging of Africa, Part One: Militarizing Africa
Africa - US Imperialism in Africa
Written by Asad Ismi and produced by Kristin Schwatrz militarizing africa
The Ravaging of Africa is a four part audio documentary series about the destructive impact of US imperialism on the continent.

"The ravaging of Africa has been enriching Europe and North America for more than 500 years. First European empires imposed slavery and colonialism on the continent. After 1945 the United States took over as the dominant neocolonial power. Through the Pentagon and the CIA the US has fueled 14 wars in Africa.
"The US has used the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to systematically demolish African economies, and their health and education sectors. This military and economic war enables the looting of Africa's resources by western multinational corporations. Washington's genocidal imperial strategy has killed more than 26 million Africans, but has failed to suppress popular resistance..."

Part 1 of 4: Militarizing Africa

"Nearly 80% of the strategic minerals the US requires are found in Africa, including 90% of th4e world's cobalt, 90% of the platinum, 40% of the gold, 98% of the chrominum, 64% of the manganese, and one third of the uranium. These minerals are needed to make jet engines, cars, missiles, electronic components, to manuafcture iron and steel. No industrial society can exist without these substances. Africa also accounts for 18% of oil imports, a number which is expected to rise.

"Africa is the most war-torn region in the world, with armed conflicts going on in nine countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia with Somalia, civil war within Ethiopia, Uganda, Chad, Nigeria, Morrocco with Western Sahara, and Algeria. The U.S. has provided arms and military training to participants in all nine of these wars. Washington has done the same in another six wars which ended between 2002 and 2006. These are the long civil wars in Angola, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Burundi, as well as that in Congo-Brazzaville."

"According to William Hartung, author of the report Deadly Legacy, U.S. Arms and the Congo War the U.S. sent $1.5 billion in arms and training to Africa during the Cold War years, 1950 to 1989. This 'set the stage for the current round of conflicts in the region'..."

"The Clinton Administration undertook a new wave of military assistance and training programs. In the 1990s the US gave military assistance to 50 countries in Africa out of a total of 53. The US has 4 different military training programs for Africa. Since 2001 the Bush administration has doubled US military aid to Africa, and quadrupled US arms transfers..."

"The most destructive case of US military intervention in Africa is the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the heart of the continent. This war has killed more than four million people since 1998 and destroyed the second largest country in Africa. The Congo is the richest country in the continent, holding the world's biggest copper, cobalt and cadmium deposits.
The US's proxies for this genocide are Rwanda and Uganda, which started the war in 1998 by invading the Congo with Washington's encouragement and support, and have since been looting hte country's resources and sending them to the West."

"I’m no politician. I’m not even a student of politics. I’m not a Republican, nor a Democrat, nor an American, and got sense enough to know it. I’m one of the 22 million black victims of the Democrats, one of the 22 million black victims of the Republicans, and one of the 22 million black victims of Americanism. And when I speak, I don’t speak as a Democrat, or a Republican, *nor an American.* I speak as a victim of America’s so-called democracy. You and I have never seen democracy; all we’ve seen is hypocrisy. When we open our eyes today and look around America, we see America not through the eyes of someone who have -- who has enjoyed the 'fruits of Americanism', we see America through the eyes of someone who has been the victim of Americanism. We don’t see any American dream; we’ve experienced only the American nightmare. We haven’t benefited from America’s democracy; we’ve only suffered from America’s hypocrisy. And the generation that’s coming up now can see it and are not afraid to say it."

Guard to keep aiding New Orleans police
"an effective strategy to mitigate the scourge of violent crime"

National Guard troops bolstering New Orleans' hurricane-depleted police force will remain in the city through June, a spokeswoman for Gov.-elect Bobby Jindal said....Guard troops have patrolled less-populated areas, including the storm-ravaged Lower 9th Ward, while the city and its police force have worked to bounce back from Hurricane Katrina and clamp down on violent crime.
The city added $15.1 million to the police department's 2008 budget for recruiting, equipment and other needs, but figures provided by police spokesman Sgt. Joe Narcisse suggest the department is still struggling to bolster its ranks. The department has about 1,400 officers, virtually unchanged from estimates last spring and far below its goal of 1,700, he said. Guard troops have been "essential" in temporarily making up the difference, Narcisse said. Pay raises have slowed the rate of attrition to near pre-Katrina levels, Riley said, and the department is now beginning to add numbers.
The 360 Guard troops in the city can make stops and are involved in "all types of police work," with duties ranging from neighborhood patrols to helping with homicide cases, said Maj. Michael Kazmierzak, a Guard spokesman. The state has so far spent $46 million to keep the Guard and state troopers in the city. Lawmakers will need to approve more dollars to cover the extended presence Jindal plans to grant.

Racist Genocide in New Orleans Continues: "Like 911 But Add Water"
by liz burbank
[edited version of original article published 9/3/05 "A Catastrophic Success": A Holocaust Shaped by Race]

Katrina was no accident, no surprise, no act of 'mother nature', the 'gods' , nor the result of 'bureaucratic incompetence' and 'poor communication'. The human and environmental and impact on New Orleans of a hurricane of this magnitude had been scientifically calculated. Rescue and recovery were deliberately withheld, working class Black people militarily imprisoned, forcibly dispersed and murdered by the armed state's violence.

National oppression and its ideological engine racism, are the lynchpin of u.s. capitalism, built and grown on genocide and slavery. Katrina is a major intensification of America's historical genocide, a premeditated physical and psychological attack on the Black Nation, part of a strategy to destroy its strength, pride, cultural cohesion that has led in revolutionary resistance against this system in its deepest crisis..

A renaissance of Black resistance and leadership, historically the leading edge of revolutionary resistance in the U.S., is what the postmodern slavemasters fear could derail or give rise to a movement here in the 'homeland', in solidarity with international resistance, that could defeat its global "new world order" agenda. Katrina and the brutal aftermath is engineered to serve the capitalist agenda in two interrelated ways: by uprooting, dispersing and destroying the Black Nation, while simultaneously inflaming reliable american racism and support for the consolidation of a fascist mode of state capitalism -- under the pretext of "rescue, relief and recovery” from a "major casualty-producing event" called a “natural disaster.” [...] full article at http://lizburbankdigest.blogspot.com/2006/03/racist-genocide-in-new-orle... also at http://www.burbankdigest.com/]

Digest commentary:
U.S. provocation in the "Strait of Hormuz Incident" can only be understood in its actual geostrategic context of the u.s global agenda falling apart. The timing here tells as much: u.s. proxy Israel attack dog is angry u.s. let NIE report out and iran out of its crosshairs. This media promoted crisis is not necessarily a prelude to actual u.s./israel military attack now, but serves, provocateurs think, as a pragmatic bandaid as well as a pretext with longer-term potential: [1] to 'justify' whatever increased pressure on Iran is necessary to make it play a 'helpful' role ....as Bush traipses around while 'Condi' provides u.s. strategists' instructions on how to play the players and [2] to put israeli 'concerns' at ease that u.s. and its quasi 'allies' will stay on course to prevent Iran from becoming dominant ME player, the only thing most of them have in common: their power depends on u.s. dominance. The Iranian govt. has its own ruling capitalist class agenda and talks tough because u.s. hegemony threatens their power -- which is also impacted strongly by the Iranian peoples' fiercely independent nationalist determination ... as their rulers play let's make a deal with u.s.

Bush Says US, Allies Must Confront Iran
By Anne Gearan, AP Diplomatic Writer
"Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terror," Bush in a speech about democracy... Chiding U.S. allies who have withheld civil liberties, Bush said governments will never build trust by harassing or imprisoning candidates and protesters... Bush spoke at the Emirates Palace, at an opulent, gold-trimmed hotel where a suite goes for $2,450 a night. Built at a cost of $3 billion, the hotel is a kilometer long from end to end and has a 1.3 kilometer white sand beach — every grain of it imported from Algeria... human rights groups have accused the Emirates of tolerating virtual indentured servitude, where workers from poor countries like Sri Lanka are forced to work to pay off debts to employers, and have their passports seized so they can't leave.
In renewing his "Freedom Agenda" — Bush's grand ambition to seed democracy around the globe — the president declared: "We know from experience that democracy is the only system of government that yields lasting peace and stability." ...

US War Plans and the "Strait of Hormuz Incident": Just Who Threatens Whom?
By Michel Chossudovsky

...Media Disinformation
Coinciding with Bush's Middle East trip, the intent of the Pentagon's propaganda ploy is to present Iran as the aggressor. The patrol activities of these boats are presented as "a serious threat" and an act of "provocation". The London Times goes even further: in its January 7 morning headlines the Iranian speed boats, barely 30 feet long, were apparently preparing "a suicide attack" against US war ships equipped with advanced state of art weaponry: "Iran speedboats 'threatened suicide attack on US' in Strait of Hormuz" (London Times headlines, January 7, 2008)

Iranian patrol boats to be used in a kamikaze style "terrorist" mission, to "explode the American vessels"? (see photos above)

What US war vessels are we dealing with? [photos]
How do the speedboats compare in size and military capabilities to the US destroyers and frigates, which Iran is allegedly threatening to blow up?

The third vessel threatened by the Iranian patrol boats is frigate USS Ingraham also equipped inter alia with launchers for Mark 46 torpedoes and LAMPS III helicopters ...

Just Who is Threatening Whom?
The incident must be put in a historical perspective. Realities are turned upside down. Known and documented since 2003, the Pentagon has drawn up detailed and precise plans for U.S. sponsored attacks on both Iran and Syria. Israel and NATO are partners in this military adventure.
Moreover, barely mentioned by the Western media, there has since Summer 2006, been a massive concentration of US Naval power in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, which are part of those war preparations. Since 2006, US war ships with advanced weapons systems have been stationed almost continuously within proximity of Iranian territorial waters.

Large scale US war games have been conducted. Numerous acts of provocation directed against Iran have been undertaken.

These war vessels are deployed in the context of US-NATO-Israeli war plans in relation to Iran. The first phase of these war plans was formulated in the immediate wake of the US led Iraq invasion in July 2003, under a scenario entitled "Theater Iran Near Term". (TIRANNT). (See Michel Chossudovsky, "Theater Iran Near Term", Global Research, February 2007)

There is currently a massive concentration of naval power in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. In addition to the three war ships which apparently had been harassed by Iran speedboats, the entire US Fifth Fleet is stationed within proximity of the Strait of Hormuz and the Iranian coastline. The Fifth Fleet is under U.S. Naval Forces Central Command stationed in the Bahrain off the Strait of Hormuz Fleet. [...]
