Wolfowitz picked for arms control panel
The AP
WASHINGTON -- The State Department will name former World Bank chief Paul Wolfowitz to head a high-level advisory panel on arms control and disarmament...The move by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice marks a return to government for Wolfowitz, a conservative with close ties to the White House. Wolfowitz was replaced as World Bank chief in June after a stormy-two-year tenure.

senior military officers and strategists. Calling for root-and-branch reform of NATO and a new pact drawing the US, NATO and the European Union together in a "grand strategy" to tackle the challenges of an increasingly brutal world, the former armed forces chiefs from the US, Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands insist that a "first strike" nuclear option remains an "indispensable instrument"...The five commanders argue that the west’s values and way of life are under threat, but the west is struggling to summon the will to defend them.

A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

1,168,058 Iraqis Slaughtered Since The U.S. Invaded Iraq

Over three years ago then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice handed Bush a policy note announcing that "Iraq is sovereign" ... the pretense continues:

U.S. seeks broad powers in Iraq as UN mandate expires:
The Bush administration will insist that the government in Baghdad give the United States broad authority to conduct combat operations and hold battlefield detainees, as well as guarantee American troops and civilian contractors immunity from Iraqi law

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister

"Declaration of Principles for a Long-Term Relationship of Cooperation and Friendship Between the Republic of Iraq and the United States of America") as a "long-term treaty." The reason that distinction is important is this: A treaty requires Senate ratification.
Supporting Iraq "in defending its democratic system against internal and external threats" is the first principle of the declaration. But according to Michael Rubin (an expert on the domestic policies of Iraq, Iran, Turkey and more), who testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, "Any langauge...which would commit U.S. forces to defend Iraq in the face of an external threat would transform the agreement into a treaty subject to Senate ratification."

A gripping story, and another story yet to be told
...essentially this is the Iraqi story: [American strategy] was from the beginning a sectarian strategy, with a shift sometime in 2005--06 from anti-Sunni/pro-Shiite to anti-Shiite/pro-Sunni, in terms of the overall weight of American military influence. The weight of the American alliances shifted... this had... everything to do with keeping the divide-and-conquer ball rolling.

U.S. Considers Dividing Iraq Into Three Separate States After Saddam Is Gone
FORECASTS & TRENDS, Oct 1, 2002 http://www.profutures.comarticle.php/91/%20
Stratfor.com http://www.stratfor.com/ reports that one of the leading long-term strategies being considered by US war planners is to divide Iraq into three separate regions. Under this plan Iraq would cease to exist. [emphasis added]
Stratfor says that such a plan reportedly was discussed at an unusual meeting between Crown Prince Hassan of Jordan and pro-US Iraqi Sunni opposition members in London in July. Further, they say that in September, the Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, stated that the US goal in Iraq was to create a United Hashemite Kingdom that would encompass Jordan and Iraq's Sunni areas. Also, Israeli terrorism expert Ehud Sprinzak recently echoed this sentiment on Russian television on September 24.
So whose idea is this? According to Stratfor, Sprinzak stated that the authors of the "Hashemite" plan are Vice President Dick Cheney and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, both considered the most hawkish of Bush administration officials.[...]

'US the Biggest Producer of Terror'
By Ahmed Ali and Dahr Jamail
"Now, Iraqis know that behind the U.S. smile is hatred and violence," Taiseer added. "They call others violent and terrorists, but what they are doing in Iraq and in other countries is the origin and essence of terror. America is the biggest producer of terror, and they spend huge funds for creating and training death squads all over the world."..."The Americans crossed thousands of miles to destroy our home and kill our men. They are the reason for all our disasters. Another resident, speaking on condition of anonymity added, "We lived in need during the period of the Saddam government, but we were safe. We were compelled to work sometimes 20 hours a day to earn our living, but we were happy to see our children and relatives together." U.S. forces, he said, have ended all that.
Abu Tariq believes the U.S. military intentionally destroyed Iraq's infrastructure. "The Americans destroyed the electricity, water pumping stations, factories, bridges, highways, hospitals, schools, buildings... Despite the differing U.S. ways of dealing with Shias and Sunnis, the two sects seem one in their hatred of the U.S.
"Look at our country, it will need 30 years to get back again," Edan Barham told IPS. "This has nothing to do with sects; all of us are Iraqis, and we should think of Iraq in a better way than sectarian lines. "People of Iraq of all sects realise that it is the occupation represented by the Americans that has damaged the country," resident Khalil Ibrahim said.Political analyst Azhar al-Teengane says the only Iraqis who support the occupation are those benefiting directly from it. "The occupation is good for politicians who have made money, militiamen, contractors and opportunists," Teengane said. "These form not more than 5 percent of Iraqi people."

Cheney Wants Surveillance Law Expanded
"We're reminding Congress that they must act now," Cheney told the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. The law, which authorizes the administration to eavesdrop on phone calls and see the e-mail to and from suspected terrorists, expires on Feb. 1. Congress is bickering over terms of its extension. Cheney also said the administration "feels strongly that an updated FISA law should be made permanent, not merely extended again. ... 1/27/8 Pakistan Shuns C.I.A. Buildup Sought by U.S.
The top two American intelligence officials traveled secretly to Pakistan early this month to press President Pervez Musharraf to allow the Central Intelligence Agency greater latitude to operate in the tribal territories
“The purpose of the mission,” a senior official said, “was to convince Musharraf that time is ticking away,” and that the increased attacks on Pakistan would ultimately undermine his effort to stay in office....
The C.I.A. operatives in Afghanistan and the covert Special Operations forces there have made little secret of their desire to move into the tribal areas with or without Mr. Musharraf’s explicit approval. In the administration, there has been discussion of whether Mr. Bush should give orders to allow them more latitude. Mr. Musharraf has explicitly rejected that, and within days after Mr. McConnell and General Hayden’s departure, he told a Singapore newspaper that any unilateral action by the United States would be regarded as an invasion. In Davos, he dismissed the idea that Americans could be effective in the tribal areas....In dealing with the American requests, Mr. Musharraf is conducting a delicate balancing act. American officials contend that now, more than ever, he recognizes the need to step up the battle against extremists who are seeking to topple his government. But he believes that if American forces are discovered operating in Pakistan, the backlash will be more than he can control, especially because the Taliban and Al Qaeda [SIC] are trying to cast him as a pawn of Washington. One result appears to be a compromise: Mr. Musharraf is willing, they say, to accept training, equipment, and technical help, but has insisted that no Americans get involved in ground operations.

Senators question $5M Moussaoui reward
The two senators who honored flight instructors for alerting authorities to Zacarias Moussaoui before the Sept. 11 attacks are asking why the men were left off a $5 million government reward given to another tipster.
Clarence Prevost, 69, got the payout Thursday in a private ceremony as part of the State Department's "Rewards for Justice" program, which mainly seeks information about perpetrators or planners of terrorist acts against U.S. interests and citizens abroad...Prevost, a former Navy pilot who goes by the nickname "Clancy," became a key witness at Moussaoui's trial and eventual conviction as a Sept. 11 conspirator. Prevost testified that he urged his bosses at the Pan Am International Flight Academy outside Minneapolis to call the FBI in August 2001 because he was suspicious of Moussaoui, an inexperienced pilot seeking commercial jetliner training...
News of the reward came as a surprise to Nelson and Sims.
"It was never done for the reward, but when you give $5 million to a person who didn't call the FBI and didn't put his job on the line, are they rewarding someone for calling the FBI or for testifying?" asked Nelson, 47, of St. Paul, Minn. "And the only reason he was testifying was because he was the instructor."...
After his arrest, Moussaoui sat in jail for 3 1/2 weeks on an immigration violation, saying little to investigators before hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon or crashed in a Pennsylvania field on Sept. 11. The Minneapolis FBI agents who responded to the tips were unable to persuade their superiors in Washington to seek a national security warrant to search Moussaoui's belongings and laptop computer.
Moussaoui later confessed to being the "20th hijacker" and was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2006 after a trial marked by numerous outbursts, conflicts with his lawyers and questions about his status, if any, within Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network.
He told jurors he was to have piloted a fifth plane on Sept. 11 and fly it into the White House. But after the jury decided against sentencing him to death, Moussaoui recanted his testimony and denied any role in 9/11, saying he lied on the stand because he assumed he had no chance of getting a fair trial.
Rewards for Justice, created in 1984, has paid about $77 million in rewards to more than 50 people... The largest payment the program has made was $30 million to a person whose information led to Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday and Qusay Hussein, according to its Web site. The award to Prevost is the first to a U.S. citizen related to the Sept. 11 attacks, the administration officials said.

U.S. Gave Secrets to Terror Suspect
By Philip Shenon
September 27, 2002
WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 - Federal prosecutors mistakenly turned over 48 classified F.B.I. reports to Zacaria Moussaoui in what a federal judge described as a grave security breach, the government acknowledged in court documents released today.
The reports, which were summaries of interviews related to Mr. Moussaoui's case and the bureau's larger investigation
of the terror network of Al Qaeda, were retrieved in searches of his jail cell this summer on the order of the
judge, Leonie M. Brinkema...which took place over several days, after determining that "significant national
security interests of the United States could be compromised if the defendant ... the only person charged in an
American court in the Sept. 11 terror attacks ...were to retain copies of this classified information."

Although Mr. Moussaoui, 34, a French national, has admitted he is a member of Al Qaeda and loyal to Osama bin
Laden, he has insisted that he had nothing to do with the Sept. 11 attacks....
Attorney General John Ashcroft had ordered the F.B.I. to review the
sequence of events that led to the error, to make sure they were not repeated....

The documents...had been turned over to Mr. Moussaoui in deliveries in June and July to the Alexandria
jail. "The documents should be classified because they contain national security information," the prosecutors
said. Judge Brinkema agreed to order Mr. Moussaoui to turn over the documents without reading them.

Within a week, the prosecutors disclosed to Judge Brinkema that 5 other classified documents had been inadvertently
turned over to Mr. Moussaoui, and that they also needed to be retrieved.
In a letter on Aug. 29, the United States attorney i Alexandria, Paul J. McNulty, said that a two-day search of
Mr. Moussaoui's cell had turned up five of the seven documents, but that one of the pair of missing documents
"is the most critical (for reasons I can explain in a more secure forum)."

On Sept. 5, Mr. McNulty wrote again, this time attaching a list of an additional 43 classified documents that needed
to be retrieved from Mr. Moussaoui. In a response the next day, Judge Brinkema said that based on a "review of two of the documents at issue, we find that significant national security interests of the United States could be compromised if the defendant were to retain
copies of this classified information." She ordered that agents of the United States Marshals Service seize any box
of evidence that contained F.B.I. interview summaries.
Mr. Moussaoui, she said, had been "cooperative" during th early searches "and the deputies were able to cover all of
the CD ROM's" on which some the documents were preserved.

Court denies Fla. [PALESTINIAN] ex-professor's appeal
A former Florida college professor who pleaded guilty to aiding a Palestinian terrorist group was not immune from a subpoena forcing him to testify in an unrelated probe of Muslim charities, an appeals court ruled Friday. Sami Al-Arian, 50, had argued the terms of the plea agreement exempted him from testifying before a grand jury in an investigation of Islamic charities in Virginia. A federal judge disagreed and found Al-Arian guilty of contempt when he refused to testify. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied Al-Arian's appeal Friday, ruling that federal prosecutors did not violate the plea agreement by forcing him to testify in the Virginia case.
Al-Arian, a former computer engineering professor at the University of South Florida, was acquitted on eight counts of aiding the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. After a six-month trial, jurors deadlocked on nine other counts. He pleaded guilty in 2006 to one count of providing services to members of the terrorist group, rather than face a retrial. He was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison and will be deported after serving the sentence. A judge lifted the contempt charge in December, and he is expected to be released as early as April.
An attorney for Al-Arian in the contempt case said a clause requiring him to testify in other cases was specifically removed when the plea agreement was written because Al-Arian made it clear to prosecutors that he wouldn't do it.
"This is politics, this is not law," his attorney, C. Peter Erlinder, said of the ruling.

Oklahoma imposes tough law on illegal residents
Many Hispanics flee state in fear of being targeted
TULSA, Okla. -- Edgar Castorena had diarrhea for 10 days and counting, and the illegal immigrant parents of the 2-month-old didn't know what to do about it. They were afraid they would be deported under a new Oklahoma law if they took him to a major hospital. By the time they took him to a clinic, it was too late. A ruptured intestine that might have been treatable instead killed the U.S.-born infant, making him a poster child for opponents of House Bill 1804 months before it was enacted as the Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2007...

the child didn't have to die if House Bill 1804 didn't ever come around," said Laurie Paul, who runs the clinic where Edgar was finally taken. "It was a total tragedy because the bill was there to create the myths and untruths and the fear." The law, billed by its backers as the nation's toughest legislation against illegal immigration, took effect Nov. 1. It bars illegal immigrants from obtaining jobs or state assistance and makes it a felony to harbor or transport illegal immigrants. A final portion of the law goes into effect July 1, requiring private companies to verify the employment eligibility of all new hires.... The crackdown has caused thousands of Hispanics to flee for neighboring states, with as many as 25,000 leaving northeastern Oklahoma alone, according to the Greater Tulsa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The law's fallout also can be seen in the struggling businesses, worker shortages and widespread fear among immigrants who say they are afraid to drive to church or the market because police might pick them up.
"I feel like I'm in some kind of Nazi country where if they see your color, you'll be stopped," said Maria Sanchez, a 22-year-old student who wants to leave Oklahoma rather than risk waiting the seven years it will take to get her papers. "I can't work, I can't study, I can't go out, there's no point of me staying here."...
Supporters -- described by Dan Howard, the founder of an anti-illegal immigration Web site, as "good, American, God-fearing people of the heartland that bleed red, white and blue" -- say the law is necessary because of Washington's bungled immigration policy. They also believe the law has helped deter crime and punishes the companies that make money on the backs of illegal labor....similar versions have been introduced or are under consideration in more than a dozen states. Last year, more than 1,500 pieces of immigration-related legislation were introduced across the country, with 244 becoming law in 46 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
"More than half the nation will soon be modeling Oklahoma's bill," said Terrill.

U.S. Ignores Finding on Student Lender
The Education Department has brushed aside a finding by its own inspector general that a student lender improperly received $34 million in federal subsidies... Representative George Miller, the California Democrat who is the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee and a critic of the department’s oversight of student lending, also lashed out. “Today’s action doesn’t erase the administration’s failure last year to recover hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars misspent by Nelnet,” Mr. Miller said Friday in a statement, referring to the large student lender based in Nebraska. Last year the department allowed Nelnet to keep $278 million in subsidies that its inspector general had concluded were improper. “While I am disappointed that the department is not seeking to collect the full amount recommended by the inspector general,” Mr. Miller added, “I hope that this decision is a sign that the department is finally starting to take its role as the steward of our nation’s federal student aid programs seriously.”http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/26/washington/26lender.html?th&emc=th

crystallizING the class nature of capitalist legal/justice system
NY billionaire faces 2nd sex lawsuit
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A teenage girl filed a $50 million lawsuit against a New York billionaire Thursday, saying he sexually abused her when she was 14. Jeffrey Epstein's attorney, Lilly Ann Sanchez, said the allegations are false and motivated by money. The girl, now 17 and identified only as Jane Doe, claims Epstein invited her to his Palm Beach mansion in 2005 to perform a massage for $300. She claims he demanded she remove her clothes, then sexually assaulted her, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in West Palm Beach.
"Jane experienced confusion, shame, humiliation, embarrassment, and the assault sent her life into a downward spiral," the lawsuit states.
The girl, her father and stepmother are seeking more than $50 million. "It is our belief that this is completely financially motivated," Sanchez said. She said the girl told Epstein she was 18, and regardless, he did nothing inappropriate with her. The teen is also at the center of a criminal case against Epstein in Florida, said her lawyer, Jeffrey Herman.
Epstein, 55, is charged with one felony count of solicitation of prostitution. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors declined to charge Epstein with soliciting a minor for sex, as Palm Beach police recommended. The state attorney's office declined to comment about the criminal case.
The teen's father pleaded guilty in 2001 to three federal fraud counts accusing him of arranging fraudulent loans as a mortgage broker in a scheme to collect commissions from sales. He was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. The Associated Press is not naming the father to protect the girl's identity. The father, who was also at the news conference, declined to comment on his own criminal case. "Quite frankly, we're very, very angry," he said, adding that Epstein destroyed his "daughter's innocence."
Epstein, a money manager, also was sued last year in New York by a woman who claims he had sex with her at his Manhattan mansion in 2000 when she was 16. "I think it's unfortunate that Mr. Epstein doesn't see what he's done to these young people and just look to reach a reasonable settlement with them," said that woman's attorney, William J. Unroch. Gerald Lefcourt, Epstein's New York attorney, also denied the allegations in the New York case. He also said in court papers that Unroch and his client, who is actually a man living as a female, filed a similar lawsuit in a separate case. Unroch said that case was settled. (This version CORRECTS attribution in 2nd paragraph to Sanchez, Epstein's Florida attorney.)

Jeffrey Epstein craved big homes, elite friends - and, investigators say, underage girls
By Andrew Marra
Jeffrey EpsteinBillionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein has been indicted for felony solicitation of prostitution by a grand jury following accusations by teen girls. Epstein, one of the most mysterious of the country's mega-rich, was known as much for his secrecy as for his love of fine things: magnificent homes, private jets, beautiful women, friendships with the world's elite. But at Palm Beach police headquarters, he was becoming known for something else: the regular arrival of teenage girls he hired to give him massages and, police say, perform sexual favors.
Epstein was different from most sexual abuse suspects; he was far more powerful. He counted among his friends former President Bill Clinton, Donald Trump and Prince Andrew, along with some of the most prominent legal, scientific and business minds in the country.
When detectives started asking questions and teenage girls started talking, a wave of legal resistance followed. If Palm Beach police didn't know quite who Jeffrey Epstein was, they found out soon enough...The media frenzy did not begin in full until a decade later. In September 2002, Epstein was flung into the limelight when he flew Clinton and actors Kevin Spacey and Chris Tucker to Africa on his private jet.

Suddenly everyone wanted to know who Epstein was. New York magazine and Vanity Fair published lengthy profiles. The New York Post listed him as one of the city's most eligible bachelors and began describing him in its gossip columns with adjectives such as "mysterious" and "reclusive."... By the early 1980s, he had started J. Epstein and Co. That is when he began making his millions in earnest. Little is known or said about Epstein's business except this: He manages money for the extremely wealthy. He is said to handle accounts only of $1 billion or greater. It has been estimated he has roughly 15 clients, but their identities are the subject of only speculation. All except for one: Leslie Wexner, founder of The Limited retail chain and a former Palm Beacher who is said to have been a mentor to Epstein...

Perhaps as remarkable as his lavish homes is his extensive network of friends and associates at the highest echelons of power. This includes not only socialites but also business tycoons, media moguls, politicians, royalty and Nobel Prize-winning scientists whose research he often funds. Epstein is said to have befriended former Harvard President Larry Summers, prominent law Professor Alan Dershowitz, Donald Trump and New York Daily News Publisher Mort Zuckerman...

Epstein's friendship with Clinton has attracted the most attention.Epstein met Clinton as early as 1995, when he paid tens of thousands of dollars to join him at an intimate fund-raising dinner in Palm Beach. But from all appearances, they did not become close friends until after Clinton left the Oval Office and moved to New York. Epstein has donated more than $100,000 to Democratic candidates' campaigns, including John Kerry's presidential bid, the reelection campaign of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and the Senate bids of Joe Lieberman, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Christopher Dodd and Charles Schumer.
A Vanity Fair profile found cracks in the veneer of Epstein's life story. The 2003 article said he left Bear Stearns in the wake of a federal probe and a possible Securities and Exchange Commission violation. It also pointed out that Citibank once sued him for defaulting on a $20 million loan. The article suggested that one of his business mentors and previous employers was Steven Hoffenberg, now serving a prison term after "bilking investors out of more than $450 million in one of the largest Ponzi schemes in American history....

Among the characteristics most attributed to Epstein is a penchant for women...."He's a lot of fun to be with," Donald Trump told New York magazine in 2002. "It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it, Jeffrey enjoys his social life."...

Police interviewed five alleged victims and 17 witnesses. Their report shows some of the girls said they had been instructed to have sex with another woman in front of Epstein, and one said she had direct intercourse with him. In October, police searched the Palm Beach mansion. They discovered photos of naked, young-looking females, just as several of the girls had described in interviews. Hidden cameras were found in the garage area and inside a clock on Epstein's desk, alongside a girl's high school transcript. Two of Epstein's former employees told investigators that young-looking girls showed up to perform massages two or three times a day when Epstein was in town. They said the girls were permitted many indulgences. A chef cooked for them. Workers gave them rides and handed out hundreds of dollars at a time. One employee told detectives he was told to send a dozen roses to one teenage girl after a high school drama performance. Others were given rental cars. One, according to police, received a $200 Christmas bonus. The cops moved to cement their case. But as they tried to tighten the noose, they encountered other forces at work.

In Orlando they interviewed a possible victim who told them nothing inappropriate had happened between her and Epstein. They asked her whether she had spoken to anyone else. She said yes, a private investigator had asked her the same questions. When they subpoenaed one of Epstein's former employees, he told them the same thing. He and a private eye had met at a restaurant days earlier to go over what the man would tell investigators. Detectives received complaints that private eyes were posing as police officers. When they told Epstein's local attorney, Guy Fronstin, he said the investigators worked for Roy Black, the high-powered Miami lawyer who has defended the likes of Rush Limbaugh and William Kennedy Smith. While the private eyes were conducting a parallel investigation, Dershowitz, the Harvard law professor, traveled to West Palm Beach with information about the girls....He took his research to a meeting with prosecutors in early 2006, where he sought to cast doubt on the teens' reliability.
The Palm Beach Police Department has asked the FBI to investigate the case. It also returned the $90,000 Epstein donated in 2004. In New York, candidates for governor and state attorney general vowed to return a total of at least $60,000 in campaign contributions from Epstein. Meanwhile, Epstein's powerful friends have remained silent... [Jack] Goldberger maintains Epstein's innocence but says the legal team has not ruled out a future plea deal. He insists Epstein will emerge in the end with his reputation untarnished....

Plea deal comes after 2 trials and 2 hung juries in Skyway shootings
A man who once faced more than eight decades in prison for shooting three people to death and seriously injuring three more, will walk free Friday after spending a year and a half in jail. "I'd get longer than that for shoplifting! No justice was served," shouted a man in the gallery, who was promptly removed from the courtroom. Court officers had prepared for such outbursts and warned the audience against them, but Savoeun Keo, the mother of Sun, was unable to control her rage. "This justice system is not just," the Cambodia immigrant sobbed. "Killed -- and nothing. It's not fair. Many of those watching the proceedings said they believed that the courts had discriminated against the Cambodian youths in favor of a white defendant. "If you're a dark-skinned person trying to live in a white-skinned world, justice is not on your side," said Nan Chot, a cousin.... http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/348694_sidorchuk25.html

Suharto Ex-Indonesian Dictator Dies at 86
...Just as the United States was becoming embroiled in Vietnam, he stood as a bulwark against Communism in Asia. The United States rewarded him with a foreign aid program that eventually amounted to more than $4 billion a year. In addition, a consortium of Western countries and Japan established an aid program that in 1994 alone totaled almost $5 billion. In doing so, the United States, along with much of the rest of the world, showed a willingness to overlook the corruption, favoritism and violations of human rights, including the disappearance of opposition politicians, that came to characterize Mr. Suharto’s rule....
Anti-Communist Purges
In the 1960s, during the turbulent months following his rise to power, few would have predicted that Mr. Suharto, a peasant turned soldier, would be able to weather crisis after crisis, as he did for 32 years. The first of those was touched off by long-smoldering resentments between Communists, conservative Muslims and ethnic Chinese that exploded into one of the bloodiest massacres in modern history... he managed to keep his name from being directly attached to it. What is clear is that in many areas the army, which he controlled, supplied weapons to and whipped up an aroused population to mutilate and murder people suspected of being Communists, many of them of Chinese ancestry. Estimates of the number of dead have ranged from 500,000 to as many as one million. Contemporary dispatches reported that the general sent crack troops of the army’s Strategic Reserve Command to organize the liquidation of the Communists. Hamish McDonald, a journalist with wide experience in Asia, wrote in his book “Suharto’s Indonesia” that General Suharto later dispatched Col. Sarwo Edhi Wibowo with a force of commandos “to encourage the anti-Communist civilians to help with the job.” The colonel said, “We gave them two or three days’ training, then sent them out to kill the Communists.”
Along with presumed Communists, entire families were wiped out and personal scores settled with ethnic Chinese, longtime residents of the country....
With the help of American-trained economists, Indonesia moved from being the world’s largest rice-importing nation to a rice exporter. During the 1970s, oil was a major export and a significant source of foreign exchange. High oil prices allowed considerable economic development, but when Pertamina, the national oil company, was shaken by scandal in the late ’70s, the country again neared bankruptcy...
Whatever favors were not given to the Suharto family went to friends. A respected Indonesian scholar was quoted by The Times as saying: “At least 80 percent of major government projects go in some form to the president’s children or friends.”
Mr. Suharto brought what became known as the New Order to Indonesia, but at the price of repression. Scholars have estimated that as many as 750,000 people were arrested in the military crackdown after the killing of the generals, and that 55,000 to 100,000 people accused of being Communists may have been held without trial for as long as 14 years.

In the early ’80s, 4,000 to 9,000 people were killed by death squads organized by army Special Forces to deal with petty criminals and some political operatives. And, according to Benedict Richard O’Gorman Anderson, a professor emeritus of government at Cornell, 200,000 people of a population of 700,000 died in East Timor in the civil war and famine after Indonesia’s invasion and annexation in 1975.
Professor Anderson called Mr. Suharto a “malign dictator with blood on his hands — over the years anywhere from half a million to a million people.”

Barbara Bush on family, lessons
"We treat our former presidents much better than other countries. Half of them kill them. The other half put them in jail. ... It's astonishing to me, the British, the day of the election, they're out and they don't have help. They're just gone. ... We're so generous in our country."

The Doctrine of Blatancy
By M. Yawar Baig
27/01/08 "ICH" -- -- For those of you who haven’t caught on yet, there is a new doctrine of success. It is called the ‘Doctrine of Blatancy’. My coinage admittedly, but one that in my view defines the strategy of the New World Order.

The Doctrine of Blatancy works something like this:

First identify our (US of A) area of benefit (where can we maximize our power and wealth?)

Next look for locals who will collaborate with us to help achieve our ends. Of course there are always scraps from the table to be thrown to them. And most dogs are satisfied with that.

However there always seem to be those who are neither shocked nor awed by our firepower or ruthlessness. And between you and me, they can become quite a nuisance. So for them, we have to invoke our contingent strategy. This works as follows: Pick something about them that is possible to twist to show up in a bad light to a western audience. If you can’t find anything, invent. What are the PR guys for anyway? Then do a publicity blitz with one sole attempt: to color them as negatively as possible. Suppress any news to the contrary and flood the eyes and ears of our people with every possible negative aspect of these people.

Case in point: what we did in Afghanistan: Government had no money to run schools and we said, “They have closed all the schools!! They have closed the schools for women. They are oppressing women! (That one gets the maximum mileage, believe me…Women get mad that their kind is being oppressed. And their men become chivalrous and want to defend these unknown and unseen women on the other side of the globe…..never mind that ours get raped every 6 seconds.)

And of course...the tactic of tapes is such a brilliant one. So simple and so effective. Create tapes from Osama, Saddam, you-name-it, anyone, and then broadcast them as exclusives sent to some obscure TV channel. Conveniently worded to fuel our ongoing blitz against them, which will get the fence sitters to jump down onto our side. “After all Osama or Saddam or Whoever said it himself!!” The Word of the TV. Second only to the Word of God. Or is it?...

So let’s look at our strategy. It’s brilliant and can’t fail.

Once this naming and mentioning has gone on long enough, and we have built a case, then we apply the other doctrine that our Great Leader resurrected: The Doctrine of Pre-emption. This gives us (naturally we are the ones who gave it to ourselves, remember??) the right to ‘take-out’ anyone who we consider to be a threat to our Great Nation. See the beauty of this? Anyone who We consider (Not anyone who actually is....

And then of course it is merely a matter of statistics: how many troops, how many planes, how many food packets to be dropped with the bombs, how much money to be handed out to the newly compliant ones. How many people dead, you are asking?? Haven’t you heard of the term, ‘collateral damage’? .. Of course some will die. And who cares if some foreign types with turbans die?...

Now, the beauty of this is, that if you do this with confidence and fast (remember our corporate values: Speed, Simplicity, Self-confidence) you will come out the winner. Everyone will fall in line. Even the ones who opposed us initially. The winner is always right, remember?

What do you do with the stories of local people dying and suffering and so on, you ask?? Well, brother, who controls the media? Who owns CNN and BBC and the channels that speak the truth and tell it like it is?? And in any case who wants old news?? Want proof?? Do you see coverage about Afghanistan anymore?? How many letters are you getting asking for it?? So do you think that the schools have reopened and the women are all liberated??... the Great Muslim Ummah... The GMU is a great concept to generate fear based patriotism, fast. After all we need that to get the Congress to sign off the big bucks. Who cares if it is yet another fantasy?? The reality is that all their countries are ruled by our boys. They need us to keep them in the style they have become used to. They bow in submission to us...Their governments willingly do what we want them to do. They never criticize us. They take our prisoners (who are their own Muslim brothers…..so much for your Great Muslim Ummah!!) and torture them for us... All the years of planning and working are now paying off. Sit back and watch the fun. This is our time.

What about our boys, you ask? What about the fact that Americans can’t stand the sight of body bags? Well, let me ask you, how many body bags have we actually seen? And you know why? The Arms Inspectors. You got it? Okay let me spell it out for you. Here’s how it works: First we accuse them of having weapons of mass destruction: WMD. Then we tell them to declare those. When they don’t, we demand that they allow UN Arms Inspections. Of course they don’t find any. When there aren’t any, how can they find them? But we get a total map of what conventional weapons they do have. Tremendously useful data for the next step: our scientific bombing. So the inspections disarm them and identify what weapons they do have. We then go in and take those out and then our boys walk in singing: For he’s a jolly good fellow.

And listen to this: the world is so full of mindless sheep, that nobody thinks to question us, by what right we demand that others don’t have WMD when we have them in plenty; we invented them; we sold them the technology and the weapons; and we have the worst record of actually using them against civilian populations. Long live capitalism. Sell them WMD; accuse them of having them; destroy the government which bought them and a great part of their country; then go in and give our boys rebuilding contracts paid for by the resources of the same country. Can you beat that?... And in the long run, they will all be happy if only they stop fighting and supporting terrorism and evil. If they accept the fact that we have the right to rule and let us rule, they can have the American dream, right in their homes. No need to come to America for that. Now tell me, what can be better than that, eh? Ask them that.

So that’s why I call this strategy the Doctrine of Blatancy. Be blatant, brother. As we always say in this country: if you got it, flaunt it. Let the other guy eat his heart out. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article19203.htm

Safety-panel candidate has ties to industry
The Washington Post
WASHINGTON — The White House is considering a scientist who has frequently testified and written on behalf of the energy, pesticide and tobacco industries to chair the nation's chief product-safety regulator...to replace acting Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairwoman (CPSC) Nancy Nord... The front-runner, the sources said, is Gail Charnley, who has a doctorate in toxicology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and runs her own consulting firm, HealthRisk Strategies. She has served on several high-level government advisory panels, including National Academy of Sciences committees. She was well-regarded as director of an academy toxicology program in the mid-1990s.
"It would be great to have a scientist running the CPSC. I've always found Gail to be very open-minded and fair-minded and astute about public-health risks," said Jonathan Wiener, who teaches law and environmental policy at Duke University.... In 2006, for example, she wrote an opinion piece in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch opposing tougher restrictions on power-plant emissions in neighboring Illinois on behalf of Americans for Balanced Energy Choices, a nonprofit funded by utilities, railroads and mining companies. In 2004, she and a colleague wrote a letter to the technical journal Environmental Health Perspectives about a study on human testing of pesticides that they had co-authored without disclosing that it had been paid for partly by pesticide makers. The journal's editor ran a disclosure after Charnley and her colleague denied conflicts of interest. Charnley also was a regular consultant for the tobacco industry from the early 1990s through 2001, according to internal tobacco-industry documents. "She's not thought of as a consumer advocate per se but as someone hired by industry to represent their point of view," said Lynn Goldman, a former assistant administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency...
