5 years ago U.S. renamed the prevailing Iraqi national resistance...
War declared on resistance
The Los Angeles Times has ordered its journalists to stop describing anti-American forces in Iraq as resistance fighters, saying the term romanticises them and evokes World War II-era heroism. An email circulated this week asked staff to instead use the terms insurgents or guerillas.

Now 5 years later, after destroying the country and slaughtering over a million Iraqis, u.s.blames undefeatable anti-imperialist resistance on 'terrorists', usually...
The Mosul riddle
Pepe Escobar
The whole scheme got even more suspicious when the Pentagon started spinning that violence in Mosul is down by 85%. No wonder; this is an operation against a guerrilla army, and guerrillas - the "fish", according to Mao Zedong - historically melt down "in the sea" (local population) when under attack. On top of it, the Maliki government has just hired as many as 5,000 former Ba'athists into the Iraqi army. Thus the strong possibility of sectors of the Sunni Arab resistance being bribed for not fighting - at least for a while. This falls completely in line with the favorite counterinsurgency methods of the US's supremo in Iraq, General David Petraeus, of buying off opponents.
Among its methodology, the Mosul operation also has not failed to deploy collective punishment techniques - like depriving large swathes of the city of water. Tribal chiefs had to plead to Mosul governor Duraid Kashmoula, according to the Jordanian newspaper al-Ghad: "The Council of Arab tribes in Mosul reported that the government cut off water supplies from the right side of the city for two days as part of a collective punishment policy against Arabs who refused to deny their pan-Arabism, and reject the campaign of 'Kurdishization' of the city."...
Mosul may now look like filthy, blast-wall, under-siege Baghdad - with vast neighborhoods no more than ghost towns. Just so the point is made: for the Pentagon and dubious US client Maliki, any Iraqi nationalist is nothing else than "al-Qaeda".

Commentary by Rhoda Shapiro
Re: [AL-AWDA] Re: One state:Co-existence, not apartheid by Ramzy Baroud (www.ramzybaroud.net) an author and editor of PalestineChronicle.com.
Ah, once again one of a seemingly endless stream of 'bad "Israel" ' articles, spun around describing this 'state' as if it were not what it is, an imperial entity imposed on the Arab world and existing on stolen land, dependent on the extermination of its Palestinian Arab people.

Baroud, in reminding us of the PLO acceptance of the z 'state', somehow failed to mention that as soon as that happened, the first Intifada broke out! - as if the
Palestinian people were going to sit still for any accommodation with the z thieves and occupiers of their homeland.

To repeat: the imperial special purpose entity, has no 'right' to exist. It is a foreign occupier, a military occupier. It is the 60 year OCCUPIER of stolen Arab land! And those who write about it as if it is a legitimate sovereign state, and those who pass this disinformation on without comment, should think twice lest they become complicit in prolonging the agony of the Palestinian people.

And this is my polite version.

My criticism of the Baroud piece is not personal attack. He represents a strong trend led by US academics who, by accepting the zionist special purpose entity of western imperialism, and implying that their racism and brutality is something that can be corrected, is not only misleading, is a useless analysis that plays into the hands of the accommodationists, when there is nothing that can be accommodated. The zs have convinced those in the west, and most particularly the US that they have the 'right' to be there, and that the Palestinians have no right to be themselves. That is a fact in the world.

Those who promote 'share the land' are deluded. Do they have inside information that the US and 'Israel' have a plan to dissolve the z 'state'? And why do they think that the Palestinian people who have been resisting on the ground for 60 years, will accept anything but the end of zionism and liberation of their lands to which they can return?
Also to think that explaining z racism to the US public is a meaningful exercise to convince them that 'Israel' is a racist 'state', is another exercise in futility. One need only look around our own benighted land and see that black people can be killed by the police of our cities with impunity, that a section of the black population of New Orleans has been effectively ethnically cleansed from the area following Hurricane Katrina, that the US prison industry incarcerates black, latino and indigenous youth at rates far beyond their numbers in the society, warehouses these youth in lousy schools, inflicts the highest rates of poverty against them and actively works to disenfranchise them.. --The acceptance by the general public of this shame, is what politically defines the US and allows the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to continue. You have only to watch the current campaign to nominate candidates for the presidency, who can only be in the running if they sell themselves to the highest bidders. I do not think the Arab Palestinians who fight every day of their lives, are waiting for the US public to wake up.

If there is no sharp debate taking place in this country, and there isn't, since all that we have come to consider 'debate' is generally confined within certain parameters -do not activists have the responsibility to take this on? This is not a popularity contest. We do not have to give anyone the 'benefit of the doubt'. I do not have the right to make personal judgment upon any individual. What we have to do is work out the best way to support the Palestinian people in the struggle to reclaim their land, in this case North America. And the only way to do that is through actions that come from collective discussion and debate.

Amid Broken Dreams, Poverty Breeds Hatred
S. African Violence Fed By Local Anger Over Post-Apartheid Hardship
RAMAPHOSA INFORMAL SETTLEMENT, South Africa -- This was the kind of place that was not supposed to exist in the new South Africa. All black. All poor. Dense, squalid, dirty, angry -- with charred patches of earth where men once stood. The violence that flared here, and in communities like it all over the Johannesburg area during two weeks of mob attacks that have left at least 56 people dead, has carried echoes of this nation's notorious past. But the rage is not old. It is new, born of the broken dreams of South Africa's post-apartheid era...."They use witchcraft to get jobs," Makolele added. It "helps the white people to like them more."...

Washington's New World Order Weapons Ability to Trigger Climate Change
by Michel Chossudovsky, Professor of Economics, University of Ottawa
Centre for Research on Globalisation (CRG), globalresearch.ca, 4 January 2002
...In the US, the technology is being perfected under the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) as part of the ("Star Wars") Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI). Recent scientific evidence suggests that HAARP is fully operational and has the ability of potentially triggering floods, droughts, hurricanes and earthquakes. From a military standpoint, HAARP is a weapon of mass destruction. Potentially, it constitutes an instrument of conquest capable of selectively destabilising agricultural and ecological systems of entire regions....

World renowned scientist Dr. Rosalie Bertell confirms that "US military scientists ... are working on weather systems as a potential weapon. The methods include the enhancing of storms and the diverting of vapor rivers in the Earth's atmosphere to produce targeted droughts or floods." (2) Already in the 1970s, former National Security advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski had foreseen in his book "Between Two Ages" that: "Technology will make available, to the leaders of major nations, techniques for conducting secret warfare, of which only a bare minimum of the security forces need be appraised... [T]echniques of weather modification could be employed to produce prolonged periods of drought or storm."

Marc Filterman, a former French military officer, outlines several types of "unconventional weapons" using radio frequencies. He refers to "weather war," indicating that the U.S. and the Soviet Union had already "mastered the know-how needed to unleash sudden climate changes (hurricanes, drought) in the early 1980s."(3) These technologies make it "possible to trigger atmospheric disturbances by using Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radar [waves]." (4)

A simulation study of future defense "scenarios" commissioned for the US Air Force calls for:
"US aerospace forces to 'own the weather' by capitalizing on emerging technologies and focusing development of those technologies to war-fighting applications... From enhancing friendly operations or disrupting those of the enemy via small-scale tailoring of natural weather patterns to complete dominance of global communications and counterspace control, weather-modification offers the war fighter a wide-range of possible options to defeat or coerce an adversary... In the United States, weather-modification will likely become a part of national security policy with both domestic and international applications. Our government will pursue such a policy, depending on its interests, at various levels.(5)

Liberal imperialist-zionist NYT has long been pushing U.S. strategic position against its feared capitalist rival China:
Bringing China In From the Cold
June 3, 2003
...today China is not Communist but fascist, in the sense of a nationalistic one-party dictatorship controlling a free-enterprise economy. In any case, the key question is not whether some of China's rulers are thugs but whether they are thugs we can work with. And they are. Some experts predict that SARS will be to China what Chernobyl was to the Soviet Union: the crack that eventually brings the entire facade tumbling down. I doubt it. Chinese reformers have long urged (behind closed Politburo doors) a freer press, but the party remain instinctively repressive... In the meantime, China is too important to leave out in the cold. As the leaders in Évian struggle over SARS, AIDS,Iran and North Korea, they need China within their ranks, as a member of the G-9. Chinese Are Left to Ask Why Schools Crumbled
A staggering number of students died as schools collapsed in the May 12 earthquake, and grieving parents are speaking out about shoddy construction.
Six structural engineers and earthquake experts asked by The New York Times to analyze an online photographic slide show of the wreckage at Xinjian concluded, independently, that inadequate steel reinforcement, or rebar, was used in the concrete columns supporting the school. They also found the school’s precast, hollow concrete slab floors and walls did not appear to be securely joined together.http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/25/world/asia/25schools.html?th&emc=th

Protests by grieving parents are forcing Chinese official to address a growing political backlash over shoddy construction of public schools.

Leaky New Orleans levee alarms experts
NEW ORLEANS -- Despite more than $22 million in repairs, a levee that broke with catastrophic effect during Hurricane Katrina is leaking again because of the mushy ground on which New Orleans was built, raising serious questions about the reliability of the city's flood defenses. Outside engineering experts who have studied the project told The Associated Press that the type of seepage spotted at the 17th Street Canal in the Lakeview neighborhood afflicts other New Orleans levees, too, and could cause some of them to collapse during a storm.
The Army Corps of Engineers has spent about $4 billion so far of the $14 billion set aside by Congress to repair and upgrade the metropolitan area's hundreds of miles of levees by 2011. Some outside experts said the leak could mean that billions more will be needed and that some of the work already completed may need to be redone.
Seepage was reported at the 17th Street Canal before Katrina. The Army Corps denies that caused the collapse. Instead, the corps contends the floodwall flexed and finally cracked under the force of water piled against it by the storm. .... http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1110ap_new_orleans_levees.html

More on the real reason behind high oil prices, Part II
F. William Engdahl, Global Research
As detailed in an earlier article, a conservative calculation is that at least 60% of today’s $128 per barrel price of crude oil comes from unregulated futures speculation by hedge funds, banks and financial groups using the London ICE Futures and New York NYMEX futures exchanges and uncontrolled inter-bank or Over-The-Counter trading to avoid scrutiny. US margin rules of the government’s Commodity Futures Trading Commission allow speculators to buy a crude oil futures contract on the Nymex, by having to pay only 6% of the value of the contract. At today's price of $128 per barrel, that means a futures trader only has to put up about $8 for every barrel. He borrows the other $120. This extreme "leverage" of 16 to 1 helps drive prices to wildly unrealistic levels and offset bank losses in sub-prime and other disasters at the expense of the overall population... http://www.uruknet.de/?p=44346

German leaders are to propose a worldwide ban on oil trading by speculators, blaming the latest spike in crude prices on manipulation by hedge funds.

Iraq War May Have Increased Energy Costs Worldwide by a Staggering $6 Trillion
By Geoffrey Lean, The Independent.
May 27, 2008.
The invasion of Iraq by Britain and the US has trebled the price of oil, according to a leading expert, costing the world a staggering $6 trillion in higher energy prices alone. The oil economist Dr Mamdouh Salameh, who advises both the World Bank and the UN Industrial Development Organisation (Unido), told The Independent on Sunday that the price of oil would now be no more than $40 a barrel, less than a third of the record $135 a barrel reached last week, if it had not been for the Iraq war....
Dr Salameh, director of the UK-based Oil Market Consultancy Service, and an authority on Iraq's oil, said ... Before the war, Saddam Hussein's regime pumped some 3.5 million barrels of oil a day, but this has fallen to just two million barrels. Iraq had offered the United States a deal, three years before the war, that would have opened up 10 new giant oil fields on "generous" terms in return for the lifting of sanctions. "This would certainly have prevented the steep rise of the oil price," he said. "But the US had a different idea. It planned to occupy Iraq and annex its oil

Opium for the Masse: Who is the Enemy in Afghanistan?

According to Vladimir Radyuhin at globalresearch.ca, the US and NATO have stonewalled numerous offers of cooperation to deal with the problem from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)and the Moscow-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO). A Pentagon general told Nikolai Bordyuzha, CSTO Secretary-General, “We are not fighting narcotics because this is not our task in Afghanistan .” Russian border guards on the Tajik-Afghan border were asked to leave by Tajik President Imomali Rakhmon in 2005, under US pressure, resulting in a sharp increase in cross-border drug trafficking.
Bordyuzha explained that the US was trying to set up rival security structures in the region, to “drive a geopolitical wedge between Central Asian countries and Russia and to reorient the region towards the US.” “Unfortunately, they [NATO] are doing nothing to reduce the narcotic threat from Afghanistan even a tiny bit,” Putin angrily remarked three years ago. He accused the coalition forces of “sitting back and watching caravans haul drugs across Afghanistan to the former Soviet Union and Europe.” ...
the cultivation of opium poppies is spreading rapidly in Iraq too...“The Americans are working hard to keep narco business flourishing in both countries,” says Mikhail Khazin, president of the consultancy firm Niakon. “They consistently destroy the local infrastructure, pushing the local population to look for illegal means of subsistence. And the CIA provides protection to drug trafficking.” In March 2002 he told NewsMax.com, “The CIA did almost the identical thing during the Vietnam War, which had catastrophic consequences — the increase in the heroin trade in the USA beginning in the 1970s is directly attributable to the CIA.”[...]

Bomb haters, unite!
...Existing cluster munitions contain billions of individual explosive submunitions. The reported active stockpiles on the United States’ inventory alone contain nearly 730 million submunitions. Stockpiles in Russia and China are likely to be comparable in scale. The US sold 7,087 early-generation cluster bombs (CBU-52, CBU-58, CBU-71), containing 4 million submunitions, to Greece, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Thailand between 1970 and 1995. She also transferred over 61,000 surplus artillery projectiles, containing 8.1 million submunitions, to Bahrain and Jordan between 1995 and 2001. BL-755 cluster bombs produced in the UK have been exported to, or ended up being possessed or used by, 15 other countries.... there are several types of cluster munitions on the inventory of various countries...
just like in the landmine treaty of 1997, the biggest producers/inventory holders/users/likely users of cluster bombs the United States, Israel, China, Russia, India and yes the land of the pure Pakistan are among the chief opponents of the treaty making it unclear what effect it will have once it comes into power.[...]

Hint of Hope as Child Obesity Rate Hits Plateau
One trend that has not changed in the new data are differences in obesity risk based on age and race. Children 2 to 5 were significantly less likely to be overweight compared with adolescents ages 12 to 19. While about 14.5 percent of white adolescent girls were obese, the numbers jumped to 20 percent for Mexican-American teenage girls and 28 percent for black teenage girls.“We still lack anything resembling a national strategy to take this problem seriously,” said Dr. Ludwig, co-author of an editorial accompanying the obesity report. “The rates of obesity in children are so hugely high that without any further increases, the impact of this epidemic will be felt with increasing severity for many years to come.” http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/health/research/28obesity.html?th&emc=...

More U.S. Families Hungry or Too Poor to Eat, 2003 Study Says
The report was based on a Census Bureau survey of 50,000 households. It was the third year in a row the department found an increase in the number of people who were hungry or uncertain whether they could afford their next meal.... Some 34.6 million Americans were living in poverty last year, 1.7 million more than in 2001, according to the Census Bureau... 65 percent of adults and 13 percent of [U.S.] children are overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control... hunger and obesity could coexist because many hungry families buy high-calorie foods that are low in nutrients.

Americans deep in debt are struggling more than ever amid the credit crisis and economic downturn.

Former Press Secretary Says Bush MIsled on Iraq
Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan writes in a new memoir that the Iraq war was sold to the American people with a sophisticated "political propaganda campaign" led by President Bush and aimed at "manipulating sources of public opinion" and "downplaying the major reason for going to war... McClellan stops short of saying that Bush purposely lied about his reasons for invading Iraq, writing that he and his subordinates were not "employing out-and-out deception" to make their case for war in 2002.... some kind words for Bush, calling him "a man of personal charm, wit and enormous political skill." He writes that the president "did not consciously set out to engage in these destructive practices. But like others before him, he chose to play the Washington game the way he found it, rather than changing the culture as he vowed to do at the outset of his campaign for the presidency."
McClellan charges that the campaign-style focus affected Bush's entire presidency. The ill-fated Air Force One flyover of New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina struck the city, was conceived of by Rove, who was "thinking about the political perceptions" but ended up making Bush look "out of touch,"...the White House's reaction to Katrina was more than just a public relations disaster, calling it "a failure of imagination and initiative" and the result of an administration that "let events control us." He adds: "It was a costly blunder."...

The government published emails, letters, videos and audio tapes which purportedly showed a political activist, Martha Beatriz Roque, receiving monthly payments from Michael Parmly, the head of the US interests section in Havana. Al Qaeda Warrior Uses Internet to Rally Women

Her husband was killed, and she took to the Internet as the widow of a martyr....“I know what I’m doing. I’m Belgian. I know the system.” That system often has been lenient toward her. Ms. El Aroud was briefly detained by Mr. Massoud’s followers.
