Media City Credit Union is making a spring push to help Burbank residents get their finances in order, and the pitch is pretty straightforward: fewer bills, better credit, one place to sort it all out.

The 90-year-old credit union launched its “Credit Cleanse” campaign this month, rolling out two loan products aimed at members who want to simplify debt or rebuild their credit scores before summer. No gimmicks. Just fixed payments and a savings-backed loan option that doesn’t require perfect credit history to use.

The first product, a Bill Consolidation Loan, lets members combine multiple high-interest accounts into a single monthly payment at a fixed rate. For anyone juggling three or four credit card bills with different due dates and different rates, that kind of consolidation can cut through a lot of noise. The second option, a Secured Credit Loan, is backed by a member’s own savings account, which means someone with a damaged or thin credit file can still access a loan and start building a positive payment history without taking on risk they can’t manage.

“As spring is a natural time for organization and fresh starts, we wanted to offer members meaningful tools to help them clear financial clutter and move forward with confidence,” said Ana Ordoñez, CEO of Media City Credit Union. “Our Credit Cleanse campaign provides practical solutions for simplifying debt or rebuilding credit, supported by personalized guidance from a team that is committed to our members’ long-term financial success.”

The timing makes sense. April tends to be the month people actually sit down with their finances, whether it’s tax refunds landing in bank accounts or just that seasonal impulse to clean things up. MCCU is leaning into that instinct deliberately.

The credit union has deep roots in this city. Founded in 1936 by employees of Helms Bakeries, MCCU has operated as a financial cooperative for nearly nine decades, returning profits to members through lower loan rates, higher savings yields, and fewer fees. That model matters in a city where residents are competing with Los Angeles-level housing costs on San Fernando Valley incomes. So the difference between a 22% credit card rate and a consolidated fixed loan at a lower rate isn’t abstract. It shows up in people’s actual monthly budgets.

Membership is also more accessible than a lot of Burbank residents realize. Anyone who lives, works, worships, or goes to school in Burbank qualifies. Family members of existing members are eligible too. MCCU also partners with the ChangeWorks Foundation, a community organization that offers another path to membership through a minimum $25 donation, which the credit union matches.

MyBurbank first reported on the campaign launch, and MCCU confirmed members can get full details at mediacitycu.org/creditcleanse or visit any branch in person.

The Secured Credit Loan is worth a closer look for anyone who’s been avoiding credit entirely after a rough stretch. The mechanics are simple: you borrow against money you already have in a savings account, make regular payments, and the credit bureaus see a new line of on-time payments on your file. It’s one of the more responsible ways to rebuild without putting yourself back in a hole.

Still, the campaign isn’t just product marketing. MCCU has consistently emphasized financial education alongside its lending, and the Credit Cleanse framing seems designed to lower the barrier for members who might feel embarrassed to ask for help with debt management. That’s a real obstacle. People put off those conversations, and the debt compounds in the meantime.

For Burbank residents who haven’t looked at their credit report since before the pandemic, this spring is as good a time as any to pull it, review it, and figure out which accounts are actually dragging the score down. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau offers free tools and guides for that process.

The Credit Cleanse campaign runs this spring. Members or prospective members can stop by any MCCU branch or visit the campaign page online to learn what they qualify for. New members get immediate access to all services, including loans, as soon as they join.

Ninety years in, this institution knows the community it serves. That’s not nothing.
