Crescenta Valley dominated both the boys’ and girls’ varsity competitions Wednesday as Burbank’s John Burroughs High School hosted the Pacific League’s opening tri-meet at Memorial Field, with Glendale rounding out the three-team affair.

The Falcons swept the board on the boys’ side, beating Glendale’s Nitros 89-34 and edging past Burroughs’ Bears 70-62. Burroughs handled Glendale convincingly, 88-44.

The girls’ meet told a similar story. Crescenta Valley topped Glendale 99-35 and defeated Burroughs 77-58. The Bears picked up their own win against Glendale, 89-33.

Burroughs senior Zoe Ben-Yair put together one of the meet’s standout individual performances, winning the girls’ 100-meter dash with a time of 12.80 seconds to lead all finishers. Glendale’s Angelina Siguenza took second at 13.20, followed by Burroughs’ Elizabeth Browngardt in third at 13.60. Crescenta Valley’s Audrey Chung and Isabella Luckey rounded out the top five at 13.72 and 13.79, respectively.

The 200-meter dash produced a different podium. Glendale’s Alexa Nagasawa took the top spot with a 27.09, with Browngardt again finishing second at 28.28. Chung followed in third at 28.46, just ahead of Luckey’s 28.69. Burroughs’ Geneva Kiefer placed fifth at 29.07.

Browngardt’s double podium finish — second in both the 100 and 200 — made her one of Burroughs’ most consistent contributors on the girls’ side despite the Bears’ overall loss to Crescenta Valley.

The meet marks the official start of Pacific League competition, a stretch that carries significant weight for programs trying to qualify athletes for the CIF Southern Section postseason. For Burroughs, opening league with a split — a loss to Crescenta Valley, a win over Glendale — puts the Bears in the middle of the standings heading into the rest of the schedule.

Crescenta Valley’s margin of victory in the girls’ meet against Glendale, 99-35, signals that the Falcons may be the team to beat in the league this spring. Their depth across sprinting events was evident in the 100-meter results alone, where four Crescenta Valley athletes finished in the top six.

Memorial Field sits on the Burroughs campus off Hollywood Way, and Wednesday’s meet drew competitors from across the northern end of the San Fernando Valley. The venue, with its track and field facilities adjacent to the football stadium, served as the setting for what shaped up to be a competitive Pacific League opener, even if the final scores leaned heavily in one direction.

Burroughs will look to build on its win over Glendale and close the gap with Crescenta Valley as the league season progresses. Track and field offers points at every event, and the Bears have athletes capable of scoring across multiple disciplines — Wednesday’s results showed that much. Ben-Yair’s 100-meter win in particular gives Burroughs a legitimate threat in the sprints heading into the next meet.
